July 2 Game Recap: Pirates 2, Phillies 0
Posted by Tug Haines at 1:18 am ET 76 Comments

It was a perfect night for a ballgame, but the Phillies decided to waste another strong outing in a should-win situation, falling to five games behind the Atlanta Braves, who continue to play like we wish our team would. Now I’m sitting here, trying to keep two things: my eyes open and a promise to Dash that I would write the recaps for tonight and tomorrow night.

What the fuck can I say? Pierogies ran around a warning track and Greg Dobbs underperformed and Jayson Werth continued to dog it, I mean, continued to play his whole career for this year. You know something, Puffy? Fuck your career. You went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts, and I’m grouchy right now, because my team lost and you did jack shit and I’m sure the commenters will continue to simultaneously lambast me for calling you out while metaphorically sucking your proverbial dick. You’re on notice. Fuck you and Reggie and your fucking contract. I’m laying off the bench guys like Dobbs for the moment because who gives a fuck about the bench guys right now? We’re sliding further south in the standings and the only guy showing up to play is Wilson motherfucking Valdez, day after day. Guess what? He’s not an everyday player and that’s going to show pretty soon and you know who’s going to need to perform? YOU, Jayson Werth, that’s who. If you can’t hit fucking Ross fucking Ohlendorf then what the fuck do we need you for?

0-5 RISP. Not only is that an 0fer, but why did the Phillies only have RISP 5 times? Fuck’s sake. You guys realize people pay money for this shit? And stop wasting quality pitching. Oughta be ashamed of yourselves.

Everyone except Wilson Valdez went 3 for 27 with 8 K’s. Fuck you guys.

Jamie Moyer (L, 9-7) gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, his bad but still.

Ross Ohlendorf (W, 1-6) hit Jimmy Rollins in the head and should suffer the consequences.

Lastings Milledge has a name like a butler and made a pretty awesome catch that saved the shutout and probably the game.

Saxophone Guy on Roberto Clemente Bridge doesn’t understand that he should shut the fuck up and play his shitty saxophone and not tell the 60% Phillies fan crowd (after a loss) to “go back to Philly” if he wants to make enough money for his next bottle of Wild Irish Rose.

Nice place, PNC Park is great even though the concourse is difficult to move through, and Pittsburgh is an awesome town and if you don’t think so, you probably don’t use the word “Party” as a verb and any argument you have is automatically invalid. See you fuckers tomorrow; I’m going to bed.

  6. J says:

Howard, Rollins, Werth, Ibanez, Victorino vs. Pirates: 5-for-35.
Valdez, Sardinha, Dobbs vs. Pirates: 7-for-20.

The bench guys have had 15 less ABs and 2 more hits. That’s pathetic.

    Awesome recap though, especially this:
Ross Ohlendorf (W, 1-6) hit Jimmy Rollins in the head and should suffer the consequences.

lolol. But I don’t think the focus should be on Werth. It’s on all the main guys. Howard, Werth, JRoll, & Vic NEED to start hitting, especially with RISP. Where has all the power and extra base hits gone? All everyone hits is just singles now when no one is on base. Oh, and I’m not even mentioning Ibanez with those guys because I’m pretty sure he’s a lost cause at this point.

    Thumb up 1
  7. TonyIsDynamic says:

Know what I’m fucking sick of the most? Shane Victorino’s motherfucking BALTIMORE CHOPS.

Holy fucking cheese crackers. He came into PINCH HIT and he hit one of those patented Baltimore Chops down the fucking first base line. STOP HITTING THE BALL TO THE GROUND IN FRONT OF YOU.

    Fuckface.

    Thumb up 5
  8. will.H says:

he’s just not left handed. someone tell me the advantage of a switch hitter if the guy isnt hitting over .300. His left handed swing is so one dimensional. Have you ever seen him drive the ball to LC when hes batting leftie? He pulls off like a retard touching a hot stove

  9. The Lone Filafel says:

I agree with Tug 100 percent. Almost the whole fucking team is playing as if they are all on fucking Xanax. What the fuck was Werth lunging like a Little League for a ball that fucking bounced in the dirt?

Have I said fuck enough to prove how fucking pissed off I am about this piss poor performance? If not… here are a few more… fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck and .. of course.. fuck.

  16. TonyIsDynamic says:

Above all else, know what’s pissing me off the most? The Philadelphia Phillies fans. All of this whining and complaining about how we’re done because of injuries, or how the reason we’re not hitting is because we’re injury-depleted and don’t have our full lineup.

    Let me tell you something.

Do you know who’s winning with JUST as many injuries? The Boston Red Sox. They’re minus Dustin Pedroia. Their star MVP second baseman. They’re minus Victor Martinez, their star high average hitman. They’re minus Jacoby Ellsbury, their spunky leadoff hitting tablesetter.

    Sound familar?

Fact is, for more games than not this season, they’re trotting out DARNELL MCDONALD AND DANIEL NAVA AS TWO THIRDS OF THEIR OUTFIELD.

No excuses. No fucking excuses. This lineup just isn’t hitting.

    Thumb up 3
  17. ScottGraham says:

Good to see someone else calling out Werth. He has one of the worst eyes of any batter I’ve ever seen. Look back to last year, he’s terrible with RISP, yet he’s “awesome” because he hits Solo HRs when we’re down by three. Trade him, get what you can, and then let someone overpay for a glorified platoon player. It’s easy to rip on Dobbs, but he’s not a guy who bills himself as an all-star.

I also think Milt Thompson needs to fall on the sword here. The “Everyone must try to hit a homerun” philsophy has failed. I’m sick of Jimmy swinging for the fences. I’m tired of Victorino’s solo homeruns when the team is down by 3. Make good contact, get on base, move runners over. I haven’t seen this little sense of urgency since McNabb nonchalantly threw 2 yard passes with 2 minutes left in the Superbowl. These guys are simply expecting to turn it on, but the difference between this years team and the 08 and 09 teams is that those guys didn’t buy into their own hype.

Honestly, I want to see Jamie Moyer snap and rip these guys a new asshole. You have a 47 year old man pitching better than he ever has in his life, you have an Ace who practically BEGGED to be traded to this team, and you’ve got a potential ace trying to get his head right and show consistency only, and they’re all let down by their teammates. Moyer needs to teach these guys about class, heart and humility, maybe it’ll light some kind of spark.

    @Scott Graham -

Agree with your well-stated comments except for Jayson. He was a monster in the beginning of the season. Somehow, someone, some way needs to unlock the greatness that is all tied up in there. Who knows maybe he needs to go to the movies more and wear Jesus sandals, he seemed to perk up after that outing.

When the bats first went silent, I wondered what the hitting coaches were doing. How about some guidance, guys. Could the coaching staff (except for Dubee) be intimidated by their own players? OR are the players so believing their own hype they are dismissing any sound advice…It’s clear that overall there’s a sense of deflation and/or malaise in the line-up. How to fix it? Perhaps the answer lies in your last paragraph.

I remember hearing Chollie in an interview saying he knew his job depended on the team’s record. He’s got to know that if things don’t turn around – but quick – it’s lights out for him.

    God Bless Wilson Valdez.

You know, I always said that I wanted Pittsburgh to start winning more games again after so many fucking losing seasons, but NOT LIKE THIS…AND NOT AGAINST MY PHILLIES!!!

Seriously, when our big hitters(the ones who aren’t on the DL right now anyway) are getting outperformed by fucking SUB-REPLACEMENT AAAA lifers, and when they can’t even hit off some shitty starter… it’s just beyond pathetic.

Honestly I am considering that maybe we should just have some big fucking firesale, and trade away everyone for prospects. Then we can just tank and go field a few fucking years of teams of Wilson Valdez and Dane Sardinha until the prospects mature enough to bring up to the majors.

Sounds awfully drastic, huh? I just don’t know anymore…maybe the current Phillies group is just turning into Wheeze Kids part 2, and we could head for another miserable period like late 80’s Phillies were.

Can we get the fans at CBP to show a little action and not apathy during the Braves series?
SHOW THAT WE CARE THAT THOSE THAT CAN PRODUCE, JUST AIN’T!
Boo all the players as the lineup is being announced.
Everybody stand up and turn their backs on the field during their first at bats.
Tuesday’s Charlie Manuel bat give away night. We could rip those bats out of the hands of those darling 14 years and youngers and simultaneously throw them out on the field. Could they really toss the whole stadium?

We couldn’t hit off Ohlendorf? OHLENDORF?!?!?! Werth deserves to be traded.

Sick and tired of hearing that the DL is what’s killing us. TonyIs got it right.
Sick and tired of Halladay and Moyer not getting the support that they fucking deserve.

  36. Dubee Dubee Du says:

How is this Milt Thompson’s fault. The everybody swing for the fences approach does not come from him, Charlie would have fired him long ago if that were so.” Charlie’s gotta turn it around quick or he’s gone”? “Turn our backs to the field”? “Trade the whole team for prospects”? Please enough with the melodrama. People were talking of booing Hamels at the beginning of the year and is there anyone who believes that it was that booing that got him back to where he has been recently? Does anyone truly believe that these guys aren’t trying? Does anyone truly believe that they don’t have the personnal pride to give a shit about their performance? Does everyone really forget how GOOD these same players have been in the recent past? Booing is NOT going to help them try harder, or care more, or perform better. Booing is only going to reinforce what has been said about our fandom in the past, that we are a bunch of frontrunners. Did any of us like hearing that when it was said? Fuck no! We were mortified that we were called that. Front runners are Yankees fans, and Lakers fans, and Cowboys fans, but not Philadelphia fans.We reacted to it like a slap in the face. Yet here we are ready to prove the statement true. Frustration is what’s motivating these feelings we have and that same frustration is what’s weighing on the bats of our Phillies, don’t add more pressure to the team just because you want an emotional release for your own sanity. Let’s try and rise above this setback and be proud of what this team has given us and know that they want to get back to that level just as much as we want them to. Let’s use that emotion in a positve way to reinforce that we beieve in these guys and what they can do on the field. I know its hard to watch this happen but it’s not for the players lack of trying or lack of talent. This group of players have proven themselves and they NEED our support. This isn’t the Phillies of the past people, this is OUR “WFC” and it’s too soon to forget that. Dubee Dubee done.

  37. will.H says:

im going to make an outrageous claim, which im complete against in every shape and form.. but

Jayson Werth doesn’t just smoke weed. Something is wrong with him. He looks different, he acts different, his fielding is becoming quite mannyish and I dont think he could hit a ball off a Tee. Probably a slump, but i cant get that thought out of my mind.

    Thumb up 1
  38. YankeesSuckArod says:

The suggestion has been made before that Jayson has been so obsessed about getting his “big payday” that his play has turned to total shit by trying to focus on individual achievements instead of helping his team to win.

While i’m not saying that’s true, he has looked kinda off all year.

Come to think of it though…most of the lineup has looked a bit off most of the year so far…

    Thumb up 0
  39. will.H says:

yeah maybe, but i can see struggling at the plate due to some mental inhabbition.. though i’ve never seen someones defense go from an A to a D- so quickly. Struggles at the plate happen.. but struggles in the field tell me something is wrong. I dont know, maybe im overreacting.

    What. Is. Their. Problem?

    What?

It’s apparent that Thompson does very little for this team. He’s a company guy riding out a cushy job. Nice work if you can get it. Now is the time for him to actually do “work.” Not. Gettin’. It. Done.

Werth takes swings these days like he’s got his eyes closed..at least he swings hard in case he hits it.

Jimmy isn’t resigned to lead anyone on the offense. Victorino says, “why should I care if no one else does?”

Cholly’s staying the course “but at the same time…doesn’t think we’re playin’ real good and that’s not real good right now…” Ibanez looks like he’s doing the best he can considering his Geritol supply has run out for some time now.

These hitters don’t have any kind of plan when they take the box. So where do Milt and Charlie fit into this?

  43. Dubee Dubee Du says:

Milt and Charlie can only do so much. These are players who have been there done that and sometimes they will tune a coach out thinking that they’ve gotten here on their own so far, they’ll figure it out on their own.

It ain’t right but that’s what happens. Until the player wants the help it often goes on deaf ears.

  45. Ryan says:

Dubee – I disagree with you saying that us booing the team makes us frontrunners. Booing shows that we actually care about our team. You know what frontrunners would do when their team was sucking a big one? They wouldn’t show up to the fucking games. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy. By booing, we show that we still give a flying fuck about how our team performs. Tough love doesn’t mean you’ve given up on them, it means that you want them to win so badly that you’re willing to rip them a new one. And since when have Philadelphia fans given two shits about what the national media says about us? They can suck my dick as far as I’m concerned. They can call us frontrunners all they want, but I’m not going to sit and watch us get shut out by the Pittsburgh fucking Pirates and clowns like Ross Ohlendorf. As fans, we should be trying to light a fire under the team’s collective ass, and there’s no better time to do that than right before a three game series against the Braves. Peace.

    @Bozo…

Give me a break. Hudson accidentally hits Polanco and it results in a DL stint and this is all his fault now? Yeah, that’s really going to help the Phillies play better. Hit a key Braves player, which likely will only result in a free base(let’s be realistic, HBP’s rarely result in DL stints) for them. I understand the Phillies are underperforming, but what will ‘retaliation’ do? That’s right, it’ll just raise their already league-leading OBP a bit more.

  56. Dubee Dubee Du says:

@ the Ryans- the quote about we fans being frontrunners didn’t come from the national media. You are correct in that we know the national media haven’t got a clue about Philadelphia for the most part. No that quote to refresh your memory came from J-Roll and that’s why we were so upset by it. But truth be told there does seem to be those who only support the team when the times are good. When times are good it’s easy to be a fan however it’s when things aren’t going so well that the players truly need the support. I’m surely not going to disuade anyone from booing but try to understand why your booing and don’t believe for a second that it will have a positive effect on the team. Let me clarify my point. I am talking about booing at the pregame intros or booing as they’re coming to bat or as they’re coming in to pitch. Now if a player shits the bed on the field and you need to show your disapproval do it then, but then let it go do and try not to berate them incessantly or you’ll lose what ever positive effect you may have hoped to gain. I’m not trying to dictate how to be a fan just trying to get us to take a breath we act and to not react on pure emotion.

Shut the fuck up Undo. You’re probably one of those faggots that are happy Utley and Polanco are injured so “MARTEEN” Prado and David Wright get the starts.

    Thumb up 0
  59. Undocorkscrew says:

I’m not happy with any player getting injured unless it’s Milton Bradley, John Rocker, or Carlos Zambrano. You on the other hand want players to get injured, as evidenced by you wanting retaliation on an accidental HBP a month ago. Utley is my favorite active player aside from Chipper Jones, so I certainly don’t wish an injury on him.

And yeah, Prado has been more productive than Utley so far. I’m of the belief that the most productive players should go to the game, not the most popular. I understand it’s a fan event, but now that it counts for something……I’d like to see the most productive players in it.

As for Wright, I THINK he’s been slightly more productive than Rollen…..so yeah, I’d say he deserves to go. I’m not into ‘rivalries’ as much as a lot of you guys. I’m a baseball fan first, Braves fan second.

The Phillies will be fine. They’ll find an adequate replacement for Utley soon and that lineup is still very talented. I think they’ll go after a mid-tier pitcher as well to replace Kendrick. 5 games out in early July isn’t something they can’t come back from, you know that as well as I do. I’m not sold on the Mets unless they get Lee or Oswalt. Takahashi and Dickey have been struggling and everyone knew it was only a matter of time. They’ll come up short with those two at the backend of their rotation and Pelfrey isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire over the past month either. He’s been insanely lucky……..just like the Mets overall.

So I still think it’s going to be a Braves/Phillies fight for that division.

    Thumb up 2
  60. Dubee Dubee Du says:

Undo- Your starting to grow on me. Kinda like a pimple on my ass. Your a fuckin Braves fan on our Phillies blog but you fucker it’s really hard to hate you. I agree with your take on the injury thing however I believe that when it was written here it was done so in the heat of frustration and despair but I doubt there was real malice. I might be wrong but I’m hoping that’s the case. Your take on the allstar game is right on too, fuck off damn you. Unfortunately it will always be who is the most popular. Lastly the Braves are playing crazy well at home right now and I believe shoud come back down to earth at some point but if not then they deserve to win. That is unless the Phils go nuts and catch them anyway, that’s what I’m hoping for. Now lay off the booze cause I really hate when you turn into Troy Glaus.

    Thumb up 1
  61. ScottGraham says:

Nikita- I agree he started off well, but since May he’s been absolutely dogging in. He has that horrible slump and now he’s right back in it. Ever since Charlie made a comment about him thinking about his contract, Werth has dogged it on the field and been snippy and confrontational in interviews.

I also think this team is terrifed to run the bases. After Rollins’ first injury, they all but stopped stealing bases and trying to hit and run. It picked up a little, but now since the announcement of Chase being gone for as long as he is, it just seems like these guys are terrified of playing hardnosed baseball. They’re just all swinging for the fences and hoping they can hit one out so they can just trot.

Werth especially looks like he’s terrified of getting hurt. He’s letting balls fall in for hits that he could have easily made plays on, he’s not hustling on the bases and he’s swinging at every pitch he sees. He doesn’t look like the same guy who was fighting to take Geoff Jenkins’ job two years ago. He knows he’s gonna get superstar money regardless of what his numbers are this year, so why bother?

I heard someone, I think it was on WIP, suggest bringing up Brown in order to put Werth back in a competition, but I think Werth would not only continue to just dog it, but make it harder for Brown to get any sort of camaraderie in the clubhouse.

    Thumb up 0
  62. Dubee Dubee Du says:

I can see how you might feel that way Scott^ but I can’t believe that any of them are not truly trying or are concerned about getting injured. In fact my take on Werth is he’s been struggling since he hurt his ankles.Werth is definately pressing at the plate and many times when that happens a player will be thinking about their hitting while in the field and not be 100% focused in the play at hand. Victorino and Rollins go into this kind of fucked up swing from the heels thing too often. Shit when they are going good the difference in their approach at the plate is so fucking obvious that it drives me nuts that they can’t pick it up when they falter. Charlie has to be getting ulcers from this.Howard is now trying to make up for the loss of Chase and as soon as he realizes he can’t do it all alone he’ll get back in sinc. Ibanez who knows? Maybe at 37 you don’t recover from the type of injury he had last year as quickly and it hinders him still. Ruiz,Polanco and Utley all were on fire and each one struggled playing after getting hurt and until they got to where they just couldn’t play through it or got some thing else hurt they were still out there trying. No they are not being very successful but they all are trying.

Holy Christ… I’m gone for a couple days while fleeing the mad Asylum in New York, desperately staying half-a-step ahead of the force – or forces – unknown which are clearly conspiring against the Phils this season… I have yet to put it all together, but while I try to unravel this tangled web – while protecting my own neck – the Fightins’ Faithful have plunged into despair!

Fear not, brethren! This too shall pass. Trading Werth would be foolish. Firing Milt would be foolish. For reasons none of us understand, ballplayers go through this. It’s mental. They’re head cases, all of them. This is not an excuse for their godawful play, but it is an explanation.

That being said, I stand by Tugger’s assessment. The time is now. The big boys must step up. They must support the Doc-Grandpa-Hollywood triumvirate of badass. Wilson Valdez must not stand alone. We need to hold the line until Chase’s healing factor returns him to us in record time, pulls his bat from the legendary stone and spurs the team in the flanks, lighting the spark that will take us to the promised land.

I believe Werth is being poisoned.

It is by no means certain, but where I was being held, I saw a LOT of government grade weed being transported in-and-out…. I didn’t know what to make of it at first, but if The Beard’s stash is being spiked, it would explain a lot.

    I’ll look into it.

I must go. They’re probably tracing this line.

But hear me: It is okay to boo. But not at the roll call or the 1st AB. Each game must be taken as a fresh slate… but keep them on a short fuckin’ leash. Like “one-round-through-the-lineup” short. If we are apathetically doing the fucking wave, tacitly accepting failure and failing to boo those superstars whom We KNOW are better, then we will have given up what makes us “US.” If we are not ourselves, why should we expect our boys in Red to any different?

UNDO – suck a southern-fried, corn-cobbed, trailer-park cock. No one care what Prado is doing. No one cares that this is Bobby Pecker’s swan song. No one cares whether Larry plays, retires, lives, dies or is raped to death by rapid ferrets. WE. DON’T. CARE. WHAT. YOU. THINK. Hudson fucked up our third baseman’s elbow and he hasn’t been right since. If I’m Cole, Doc, Moyer, Kendrick or Fat Joe, I’m putting a high hard one in Prado’s fucking ear. Bad cricket, you say? Fuck you. This is war & we’re fighting with our back to the wall, so take a reverse-cue from your namesake and PUT A FUCKIN’ CORK IN IT.

This is Philly, assholes. Enough of this nihilism. We don’t say die. We don’t roll over. If our players look like they are, we let them know that shit is unacceptable. We cheer every time a Phillie approaches the plate as if it’s 1776 and he just single-handedly slapped King George in the face with his red-white-and-blue cock. When he strikes out for the second time or fails to hit with RISP, we boo the ever-loving PISS out of him. It’s go time. We need to shift gears. We need to take it to the division. We need to take it to our own team and get their fucking bats moving and – more importantly – get their hearts back into it.

I must go, but I’ll continue to check in when I can and in the mean time, I’ll continue to find out what I can on how far down the rabbit hole this conspiracy against the once-and-future WFCs goes.

Keep the faith, lads. Fuck UNDO and enough of this trade talk. Let’s go.

The time is now. These are the moments when men of character prove their Werth.

    Let’s do this shit.

Dubee, I don’t think Howard is that out of sync and if we had ANYONE else right now, I’d even say bat Howard 3rd, he’s making good contact, his average is up and he look to be seeing the ball pretty good. Rollins is really pressing, I think that walkoff he hit the other night has put him into “get me to the plate, boys!” mode, except he physically isn’t ready to be in that position. Victorino, I just think doesn’t give a shit. I don’t think he was happy with being slated to hit 7th, and the fact that his numbers are all down, but his power numbers are up really says a lot about his approach at the plate. For some reason, I still give Raul the benefit of the doubt.. probably because he’s the only guy out there that looks really frustrated with his performance. He’s giving 100%, no doubt, but it’s just not there. I honestly think the ASB wil help him, there’s been no time for him to take a few games off, because there’s been nobody to replace the potential of his bat in the lineup.

That being said, I really don’t think Werth gives a shit anymore. I think he took it personally when they gave Howard an extension, I think when Charlie called him out, it snowballed that, and I think he’s done as a Phillie. If he’s your trade chip right now, you gotta pull the trigger. Even if they don’t call up Brown, Ben Fransisco is a guy who has had success before as a starter. If Valdez can put it together like he has, maybe Ben can too.

The best thing Charlie can do right now is play the hot bat. Valdez is hitting? Cool, bat him 3rd. Werth struck out 3 times? Let him sit and think about it for a game or two. It’s really all he can do unless Amaro makes a move. I really want to see Charlie snub these guys for the All Star game, too. Literally say “None of you guys deserve to make it this year” and let them stew over it during the break.

    @Chutley…..

You know what, I actually didn’t mention any of that. Weird…..

Getting hit by pitches is a part of baseball. It is in no way Hudson’s fault that he is on the DL. It’s just a part of the game and I seriously doubt he was trying to injure Polanco. If he wanted to injure someone, it would be Howard, Utley, or Werth. Not Polanco….

And I’m not claiming that anyone cares about the Braves. This certainly isn’t the only blog I post on. Like I said, I’m just a baseball fan and I have a ton of respect for this organization. You want to whine about me posting here, go ahead…….it’s your call. But I’m just talking the Phillies and Braves.

By the way, that was a nice pep talk regarding the Phillies. I’m sure they check in from time to time to see what opinions you have. If that doesn’t put a fire under this teams ass, nothing will. Well done sir.

Did the Phillies claim that Polanco’s bone spurs in his elbow were from him getting hit by that pitch from Hudson? I guess that it’s possible but I always thought that it was an accumulative type of injury. Any medical personnel out there?
