Drastic Measures

What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy? Baseball! A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part of a team. Teamwork… Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on. If his team don’t field… what is he? You follow me? No one. Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say? I’m goin’ out there for myself. But… I get nowhere unless the team wins.

I always thought Charlie had a little DeNiro in his approach to hitting. Something about those short sweet strokes and I don’t mean while he has his hands down his pants.

Nicely done Tug another stroke of genius.

I hope Dobbs loses his roster spot to someone more deserving. He hasn’t been good since 2008.

I love Charlie and don’t usually question his moves, but why is he still putting Danys Baez in the 8th and 9th inning and using Greg Dobbs to pinch-hit in a close game? Jamie Moyer would be more useful at the plate right now. At least he’d make the opposing pitcher work.

I do have a feeling (even with Interleague play starting) that the Phils will pick it up very soon. A couple of positives are the great starting pitching that they’ve been getting from Halladay, Hamels, and Moyer. Also, they’ve been playing at their absolute worst and are still only a couple of games behind Atlanta.

Awesome work, as always. But until this happens in real life, I won’t be happy.

Maybe the Giants will trade us Pat Burrell straight up for Dobbs, that would be nice

  11. Jay Ballz says:

Enough is enough and it’s time for a change.

Phillies face righties all weekend in Boston ( Lackey, Dice-K, Wakefield). Cut Dobbs, promote Domonic Brown to DH (or play LF so Raul can DH).

  12. Erin says:

No but seriously…where’s the line to do this to Dobbs cause I want in. I’d even pay. Anyone else notice the increasing boos at CBP for him? Could he be next Eaton? ::shudder::

  13. !@#$%^&* says:

I understand Dobbs sucks…there is no reason for him to be on this team.He contributes absolutley nothing but he isn’t the one to blame. We should be pissed at Jayson,Chase,Ryan,Raul etc for this mess. After interleague play the Phillies season is over.Unless they somehow win 2 of 3 in each series but we all know that will not happen.I say we place 3rd or 4th at the end of the season.Hope the Braves have fun in the NLDS.There is always next year though! ….Ugh

I wonder if they will wake up when suddenly all of the bandwagoners are gone and CBP is barely half full in August/September.Roy probably wants out.No way he will get the ring he wants with this offense.

  15. Matt says:

I was on board with what !@#$%^&* said until about the third or fourth sentence. Phillies are gonna finish in 3rd or 4th? Not a chance. Things will get better, eventually. I just pray that the offense wakes up before the pitching hits a slump of their own.

  16. TonyIsDynamic says:

Nah Maria, Phillies fans are acting LIKE the old Mets fans right now. That’s right.

They’re sucking shit, but they don’t care. They’re the goddamn Philadelphia PHILLIES. Why do we even need to play? We’ve got this shit in the bag.

At this point I’d rather see Charlie pinch-hitting than Dobbs.

Dobbs is HORRIBLE!!! Ross Gload would’ve done at least something. When is J-Roll coming back?

  20. DP says:

Baez was the nail in the coffin. Really?! Baez Charlie?! Really!? I just don’t get it. I don’t care if no one else was available. Sending Baez out there was like putting up a white flag. If that game was 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th, I actually think we would have at least tied it. Once it went 2-0, you felt the game emotionally get away. Even with Polly on 3rd, once i saw Howard’s “approach”, if he even had one, after the 1st pitch I knew what was coming. Flashbacks of Burrell flailing away at junk. Howard was swinging for the fences from the jump. It’s like he didn’t care about anything else, damn the torpedoes, I’m going to be Mat Stairs and hope something happens. I’ve been saying it’s time for RAJ to clip someone and make an example. Dobbs is a candidate for sure. As others said, he gets props for 2008. We gave him a bye in 2009 but enough is enough. He may be the scapegoat but there not many other candidates right now. Baez! cough, cough

  21. James Fayleez says:

As soon as I saw Baez go in, I switched over to the NBA Finals.

Putting Baez in a game is the equivalent of saying, “Fuck it.” It’s like mop up duty even when the game isn’t out of hand.

    Seriously, awesome find Rube.

  22. Watrick says:

Fire RAJ! He obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing!

  23. Watrick says:

Actually, that wasn’t to mean that he should sit on Baez and Dobbs as the role players that Charlie’s trying to use them. They suck, but I have faith that he’s trying to make some moves to solve those problems. Hopefully he was just sidetracked by the draft.

Who the hell thumbed up !@#$%^&*??? If anybody thinks the Phillies are/will be out of contention I question your fandom and your intelligence. They faced one of the best pitchers in the league last night. You know how you expect to win whenever Halladay is pitching? Marlins fans (all 46 of them) feel the same way when Johnson is pitching. Shit will be OK. Except for you, Greg Dobbs.

And whoever said something about Dobbs being the next Eaton – Adam Eaton stole $24mil, Greg Dobbs is only stealing $2.5 mil. A little bit different

  31. Am I totally missing the apparent “love” for Pat Burrell?
And Ross “The Savior” Gload is 2-14 in his last 10 games. He hasn’t had a hit since May 28.

  33. No seriously says:

Really, all our venom is turning on Baez and even more so Greg Dobbs? Greg Dobbs is the new Adam Eaton?? Is this some kind of bizaro world I’m living in? When we were heading into the season, were we hanging all our hopes on the pinch hitting of Greg Dobbs? Is that what this season is coming to, that we are blaming a bench player for our misfortune? Utley, Werth, Howard and Ibanez just practically went 0 for May and everyone is hating on Greg Dobbs? I’m just baffled.

Tug – hahaha this is great. I needed this. I wish I could load this on an LED frame at my desk and just let it play over & over. HIT HIM AGAIN damn it!!

  35. Phan Stuck in nyc says:

No Seriously: You need to add Utley to your list. AND Jimmy Rollins who can’t seem to stay healthy and seems to have decided to relieve the team of his “leadership” skills. AND Charlie who can’t seem to gather up this alleged group of adults, make them understand that they play a game for a living, that they used to be the envy of much of the baseball world, and that by most standards they’re overpaid. Suck it up, ea of you find your center, go back to your own basics, ask for help when you need it, and GET HUNGRY before the fans stop coming to see you.

Truth is, the list is long. No one person is to blame. But whacking Dobbs whose sole job is to PINCH HIT – and he doesn’t – sure feels like fun.

    Thumb up 0
  36. No seriously says:

If we are going to focus our scorn on any one player it should be Ibanez. He’s been miserable for over a year and still starts nearly every game. As opposed to maybe one at bat a game he gets 4-5 and hasn’t hit for over a year now. The guy is a total joke at this point and I don’t see a 38 year old suddenly rebounding. He’s a disaster.

  37. Defenestrate Wheels says:

I think we should “junk punch” each of the phillies (with the exception of starting pitching) CAUSE THEY KNOW WHY!!!!
