Chooch Is Here For Tres Más Octubres
Posted by Tug Haines at 7:40 pm ET 40 Comments

Amaro is deftly side-stepping arbitration hearings for the second straight year, as Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com is reporting that Carlos Ruiz has agreed to a 3-year contract extension worth close to $9 million.

I think we all know how he plans on celebrating.

    Go Get Um Baby Arms!

  17. Eric Says:

I’m really dreading Phylan’s post tomorrow where he explains how 3 million is way too much, but 2.55 million would have been GREAT.

  18. marps Says:

    9 million???? what a steal!!

  19. maxL Says:

Actually, considering how much production we get out of the 8 hole in our lineup, and the stellar defense, good game-calling, and decent arm, I (as will Phylan, probably) will tell you that 3 mil is still a great deal for Chooch.

  20. Gonzo Says:

3 million isnt too much, nor is it a steal. I think it’s just right.

  21. jupiter's rings Says:

    enhorabuena, don Chooch

  22. Erin Says:

I love Chooch and ice cream….win win. This pic will be my new computer wallpaper at work! :)

  23. Joe D Says:

Everyone who owns the Legends of the Fall dvd must watch the NLCS celebration video. The interview with Chooch is pure gold. At the end he yells “CHOOOOOOCCCHHHHH” and says he loves the fans in Pilladelphia. So awesome.

  24. The Lone Filafel Says:

Great…but Im worried… does that mean we wont be signing Jayson Werth? (That was the obligatory “The Phillies Spent Some Money On Someone So We Have To Panic And Act As If Jayson Werth Is Now Playing For the Mets Because The The Phillies Didnt Have Enough Money In Their Budget For Him Because They Signed This Player” post.)

  25. Watrick Says:

Werth would never want to play with Sarge Junior.

  26. Eric Says:

@ Lone – You ALMOST nailed the joke. You needed to work Lee into it to complete the asshole cycle.

  27. Heathcliff Slocumb's Beard Says:

Werth will go to the Expos.

  28. Phylan Says:

    what Gonzo said

  29. BigMiles Says:

    boom goes the ice cream

  30. Mike P Says:

I wish I knew why Chooch all of a sudden becomes a god at the plate come playoff time. The guy is normally a strong defensive catcher and I love the way he handles the staff, but he’s normally a subpar bat. Then the playoffs come around and he starts crushing the ball. Is it a sense of urgency? The rhythm of playing every day and not being platooned?

I dunno. All I know is that I was in the acme over the holidays, and I saw a “Senior Octubre” t-shirt. Remarkable.

  31. Nicky C Says:

I remember seeing chooch tear it up over here in Lakewood NJ back in ‘01 for the BlueClaws…good to see a home grown product locked in for 3 more years…

Can’t wait for spring to roll around at First Energy Park

  32. Phylan Says:

@Mike P, it’s probably sample size – when you get to the playoffs and only have 20 or so plate appearances versus the 600 you can get in the regular season, crazy stuff happens. That being said, Ruiz had an above average year at the plate in the 2009 regular season. He started off awfully and then just caught fire in June and when all was said and done he turned in a good line. Hopefully he keeps it up.

  33. will.H Says:

ruiz is learning how to drive the ball rather than pulling off with that wild swing he used to have. before, he’d just dribble the ball to the left side but now hes using all fields. I like the adjustments hes made at the plate because he used to be dreadful. of course, his defense has always been really good. he also calls a good game..unless he calls for a 2-2 cutter to brian roberts..

  34. Mike P Says:

    @Phylan

Are we looking at the same stat lines?

    2009, month-by-month:

    April .273
    May .309
    June .174
    July .172
    August .305
    September .314
    October .333

My characterization was definitely a simplification, I can’t argue that. But man, he is money down the stretch and in the postseason.

I get the sample size argument in terms of games played, but I think it’s a little more productive to consider that he has had 3 really strong consecutive postseasons at this point.* In these kids of circumstances–when you’re talking about playoff runs in 3 consecutive seasons–I think it makes more sense to scrap the sample size critique and start calling it a pattern.

*You might point out his relative lack of production in the 2008 postseason, when he hit .261. Consider that he struggled in the NLDS–hitting .071–before coming back to hit .313 in the NLCS and .375 in the WS.

  35. bigmyc Says:

Yeah, Will H., but shame on Maddog for agreeing with the call.

  36. bigmyc Says:

Tug, that’s freak’n hilarious. Man, is Carlo fired up for some fuckin’ ice cream or what?

  37. Phylan Says:

@Mike P I see what you’re saying (in my description of the 2009 season I was looking at OPS but no biggie), but consider this: Ruiz has 119 postseason plate appearances. That’s maybe 1/5th of a season for a full time player. Ibanez had a streak longer than that where he was cash money. Lots of guys have slumps that are longer than that. In other words, weird shit happens even in 100ish PAs. Personally, if Chooch was up at the plate in the 2009 World Series, I was expecting him to hit like a player who hits .255/.355/.425 (his 2009 season in 379 plate appearances) and not .303/.420/.485 (his postseason line in 119 PAs).

  38. j_romes Says:

oh dear christ. + millions upon millions for Tug.

Thank God for this site and this post. Broke up my sports malaise.

  39. Mike P Says:

@Phylan You know, after I wrote that, I thought to myself, “Why didn’t I check the other stats to see if that’s what he was talking about…” Hah Oh well!

It’s funny, because by the WS, I was taking a totally opposite approach. I would say to myself, not only has this guy been money all postseason, but he has been coming up big in the playoffs each of the past 3 years. I guess that’s just different people watching baseball. Yet another reason I love the game.

  40. eminencegirl Says:

    I heart Tug.
