World Series Game 2 Recap: Yankees 3, Phillies 1
Posted by Dash Treyhorn at 11:29 pm ET 158 Comments

What happened?

A.J. Burnett shut down the Phillies offense as the Yankees took game two of the World Series to even it at one apiece.

Who did what?

Pedro Martinez (L, 0-1) allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Matt Stairs went

A.J. Burnett (W, 1-0 ) allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out nine.

Mark Teixiera went 1 for 3 with a homer (1) and an RBI.

Hideki Matsui went 2 for 3 with a homer (1) and an RBI.

Jorge Posada went 1 for 1 with an RBI.

Mariano Rivera (S, 1) pitched two shutout innings to earn the save.

What does this mean?

Pedro was good, but A.J. was better.

Despite only allowing three runs in six plus innings, Pedro Martinez couldn’t quite capture the magic that saw him toss seven shutout innings in his only start in the NLCS. He was solid against a tough Yankees lineup, but one well placed pitch to Hedeki Matsui was all it took to derail his first World Series start since 2004.

After taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, Pedro allowed a leadoff homer to Mark Teixeira to even things at one. He worked a scoreless fifth, and after striking out Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez to start the sixth, he allowed a solo shot to Matsui to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

It would be all the Yankees would need, as the Phillies would be unable to mount any offense the rest of the way. Their only run of the game came in the second inning, when Matt Stairs singled in Raul Ibanez to take a 1-0 lead.

A.J. Burnett was superb over seven innings, striking out nine and never giving the Phillies a chance to mount a serious threat.

Their best chance to strike came in the eighth inning, when Marino Rivera allowed a one out walk to Jimmy Rollins and a single to Shane Victorino to bring the go ahead run to the plate, in the form of Chase Utley. Utley worked the count full, but grounded into a double play to end the inning and the rally.

It was a solid showing for Pedro Martinez, but unfortunately, the offense couldn’t quite get the job done. With the series even at one, the fate of the Phillies falls into the hands of Cole Hamels, who has the arduous task of facing off against Andy Pettitte in game three on Saturday night.

What’s next for our 2009 National League Champions?

In game three of the World Series, Cole Hamels (1-1, 6.75) takes on Andy Pettitte (2-0, 2.37).

  1. Lynniemac Says:

    Wow, Dash. That was speedy.

  2. stealth Says:

    not sweating it…one bit

  3. How do you spell retard? Says:

    FUCK.

  4. Fink Says:

We’re following the same formula that we always do when we don’t have home field advantage. Win the first on the road, lose the second, then come back home and win 3 straight. We are right on schedule.

  5. woody Says:

    17-5

  6. JB Says:

Fink said it before I could. I almost expected to lose tonight.

  7. Lynniemac Says:

To be honest, so did I. I don’t like it, though.

  8. stealth Says:

yeah JB..me too..I was only hoping we would get one there and we did so I’m content..now its back to a real ball park and real fans…I have a feeling Cole will be last years Cole.

  9. greenman! Says:

yeah I think I got my hopes up with that early lead, I am just praying Hamels had plenty of time to get his shit together.

  10. Yanks in 5 Says:

Ready for the worst weekend in Philadelphia sports history?

Yankees win ALL three games at your little league field and the Giants crush the Eagles!

  11. PhillyCuban Says:

Idk, I thought wed get to Burnett. But he deserves all the credit in this one. His pitches were perfect.

Overall mission accomplished though, and well likely have Lee to oppose AJ in game 5 if the pitching works out how I expect at least.

  12. stealth Says:

They also seem to have one bad game a series and I believe it was this one..no more..its time for total domination

  13. woody Says:

Please believe that the yanks did not win tonight, the phils lost.

  14. JB Says:

I’m hoping Cole has a Moyer moment (minus blown calls): after a sub-par postseason, he finally puts together a solid outing in Game 3.

  15. marps Says:

Just for the record Utley DID NOT ground into a double play.

  16. Lynniemac Says:

Matsui hits a 320 foot “homerun” and WE have the little league field?

  17. stealth Says:

you notice after a loss we are all here and commenting and keeping our hopes up and faith in our team..where were you last night Wanks in 5? spanking your monkey at Cliff Lee?

  18. JB Says:

Hahahahaha @ a Yanks fan with their 314 corners calling CBP a “little league field”

  19. A-Rod's Juice Says:

    Love the trolls…Phillies in 5

  20. Jeff Says:

This was the inspiration for Cliff Lee’s catch the other night…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfkdZ3tXFSs

  21. Brandon Says:

Valentino messing his pants with love for the yankees right now. He’s like the troll of the espn crew.

  22. greenman! Says:

lol that Yanks fan that was mysteriously quiet yesterday is back. I wonder where he went yesterday?

  23. infiniteciel Says:

Fink said it. I had the same feeling…every other series has gone this way. Win game 1, lose game 2, and cruise the rest of the way. We can only hope that it happens that way again. Pedro did really good; our offense just sucked…

Hamels better pick up his game this time. If he does, then I still stand by Phils in 5, just like all the other series.

  24. will.H Says:

“Yankees win ALL three games at your little league field”

Yankee Stadium ranked 1st in the majors in HRs allowed. Citizens Bank Park ranked 16th. You dont know much baseball up there in phoney fan land.

  25. will.H Says:

and matsui hit a 320 foot homerun that didnt hit the foul pole. what else do you know?

  26. phils Says:

Victorino was pretty much running toward hawaii on that play so I don’t doubt that the umps would have ruled it a dp anyways..

  27. Gonzo Says:

Booooooooooooooooooooooo and fuck you, New York.

  28. YANKEES RULE1234 Says:

Hey Phillis fans – not as much fun tonight, huh. ? ? ? Get ready to eat it on Saturday, Cole Hammels ERA is over 7; LOSERS – SIT DOWN and SHUT UP.

  29. Eric Says:

Appreciate the start, Pedro. Good game, tough loss.

  30. stealth Says:

ok..this guy is 12..what are you still doing up? we were all here wondering where you were….where were you last night?..we were here last night and we are here now…wait why am I even bothering.

  31. gettinitdone Says:

we’ll get em…that was the best they could offer. after we derailed them yesterday i actually expected them to come out with actual fight and heart… we know we got them.

had to listen to some skank at the bar talk about jeter and tyler perry all in the same sentence. then she didn’t kno who rudy guiliani was. fuck new york.

  32. will.H Says:

haha yankeesrule, one, two, three, four!!!

    who is really that young?

  33. RR Says:

    Who’s your daddy?

  34. Phils Phan Says:

Andy Pettitte. HGH. Worship that hero, New York.

  35. CB Says:

oh yankee trolls, good stuff really. witty and clever all around.

  36. stealth Says:

oh!.. the other asswipe is back

  37. gettinitdone Says:

CBP and the fans will fuck their shit UP…costumes and all.

  38. RR Says:

Big Brown really shit the bed tonight, huh?
And will.h cleans up urine in the office building that steLrh works at.

  39. Mand Says:

Yup. Not breaking a sweat here either. Afterall this is our game plan. I have slight faith that Cole will get it done.

Hey how many more ways can we turn a DP in this series?

And what happened to not feeding the trolls?

  40. RR Says:

    Stealth

  41. Mand Says:

    Screw it I’m feeding them.

I don’t know who your daddy I but I do know that the phillies are arods daddy

  42. RR Says:

Feed me beyotch. I’m here all week.

  43. Yanks in 5 Says:

Ready for the invasion from up north? Thousands upon thousands of New Yorkers taking over your parking lots and that little league field of yours this weekend?

It’s 3 extra home games in the 6th borough of New York City for the Yankees.

    WHO”S YOUR DADDY?

  44. stealth Says:

who is steLrh? DUH!!!!!ah! RR..where were you man?…missed you…couldnt find you last night after that ass kicking..just wanted your thoughts..so after you win one and the Phils actually lost it for themselves you come around huh? is that how you work you diehard Yankee fan you..you go guy. lol

  45. Lynniemac Says:

Here all week, but missing after the Yankee loss, strangely.

  46. will.H Says:

RR how do you explain your disappearance? Are you as fair weather as the people who gave up on game 1 in the 8th?

  47. RR Says:

Who wears short shorts? I weaaarrr shoorrrtttt shorrrttsss!!!!

  48. RR Says:

Who’s your Daddy? What a fuckin mistake to start this clown in Yankee Stadium. Uncle Cholly is a fucking idiot.

  49. stealth Says:

    whatever that means

  50. dlhunter Says:

    Obvious troll likes dudes. Obviously.

  51. Mand Says:

Matsui has a 320ft homerun an our stadium is a little league field. Wow

  52. Mark Says:

Wow, New York usually does a good job of poisoning and killing its residents. They must have missed these clowns.

  53. gettinitdone Says:

who is closing sat? seriously….if thats the best they could do tonight then we so fuckin got this.

  54. RR Says:

What disappearance? I was here all night after game 1. I am Weatherman, RR, and a few others. Check yo self before you wreck yo self.

  55. Mark Says:

How the fuck should we know you’re two-three different people. Who the hell cares, dude?

  56. RR Says:

Uncle Cholly should resign. Did he seriously think Pedro would win in Yankee Stadium? He’s dumber than he looks.

  57. will.H Says:

changing names makes you even more of a pussy. the new york way

  58. Lynniemac Says:

So you hide behind multiple online personalities when your team loses.

  59. RR Says:

I guess you care, Mark. You took the time to respond. Ryan who?

  60. RR aka Fairweather Says:

the yanks win? good. time to go tell some guys to shove it over the internet. go yankees. god is dead and my life is without purpose.

  61. RR Says:

    Will.h is a pussy. Period.

  62. stealth Says:

AH! so what you are saying is that you disguise yourself you sorry ass clown. Seems you were RR all before last nights first pitch then after your asskicking you are someone else. So before YOU! wreck yourself…seek therapy because that is a sign of a multiple personality disorder.

  63. RR aka Fairweather Says:

i like alpacas. far too much.

  64. gettinitdone Says:

rr…not gonna lie you’re pretty fuckin gay dude….you should really just get back to scrapbooking about the mets or some shit. leave the baseball to teams with legit space in the park & real fans.

  65. will.H Says:

dont worry RR, you’ll rebound. your girl might even hit a treadmill

  66. Ryan from LV Says:

I wish I had the time to go to other teams websites to talk etrash. …Ohh wait, I have a life.

  67. Lynniemac Says:

Ryan, you don’t need all that much time, really. You only have to do it when your team wins. When they lose, you can skip it.

  68. Weatherman Says:

Fox showed a close up of Uncle Cholly. I think Cole jizzed on his face and forgot to wipe it off.

  69. stealth Says:

I know..the thought has’nt even entered my mind to visit a Skankee web site…like I care. Total sign of a bandwagon jumper right there.

  70. Ryan from LV Says:

Ohh yeah I forgot, sorry Lyn.

  71. RR aka Fairweather Says:

sometimes when im alone and i cant find the remote, golden girls comes on. and i touch myself.

  72. stealth Says:

shhh!!! everyone…I dont think RR wants us to know who he really is.

  73. PhillyCuban Says:

pretty pointless to even fuel it…just let the guys on the field do the talking

  74. NG Says:

    STEALTH:

i dont know what you’ve been seeing about “real” fans here in philly….i’ve seen way too many frontrunners since last years big win <3…

people dont watch a damn game all season or even go to one and they are all about the phillies once they get to playoffs…

its pretty annoying to us fans who go to games in the freezing cold in April and dying heat in June and July….

its just gonna get worse once they win again

cant blame em though i guess

<3 love you Phils…and HAMELS, i hope you bring your A-game and not blame your son and missing his first halloween with him dressed up as a littlle pumpkin or the Yankees will Tee Off on you…

  75. Yanks in 5 Says:

Does your little league field sell batteries to throw? I heard it’s a tradition in your city

  76. Weatherman Says:

All you “wooder” drinking retards are wasting your time responding to me or commenting about me. Go talk some baseball, bros.

  77. RR aka Fairweather Says:

When I cry I don’t like other people to hear me. So I go to the shower, turn it on, and stick a bar of soap in my mouth. I bite down hard and cry in the shower. I do that sometimes, like when we run out of fruity pebbles or two and a half men is a repeat. I enjoy coldplay.

  78. PhillyCuban Says:

its pretty much a pick em series still anyway. Phils captured home field so far, but these teams match up about as evenly as can be talent wise

  79. Weatherman Says:

    20 D energizers.

  80. Mand Says:

The Yankees still haven’t done anything to impress me.

  81. stealth Says:

yeah NG..I agree..I am having way too much fun with RR though.

  82. Ryan from LV Says:

Probably some pimply faced kid who put aside his star trek figurine collection once he saw the Yankees were in the playoffs and now comes to Phils site to seek the attention that his mommy never gave him….. wahhh.

  83. Dave Says:

So wait, the Yankee fans show up tonight? And one of them wants to talk about us throwing things onto the field? Last time I checked, we didn’t have to have a ten minute delay in a playoff game because our fans threw enough shit onto the field that the NYPD had to get out there. OH!! That was the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. My mistake.

  84. Weatherman Says:

I’m done entertaining you bandwagon fans until Saturday. See ya then!!

  85. gettinitdone Says:

    dude—-you’re fuckin MENTAL. fix tht.

hamels has his shit together, homefield advantage, and tonight was the best the skanks could play so it’ll be all good.

  86. Lynniemac Says:

Dave, I’m sure the trolls don’t remember that because they didn’t follow the team then.

  87. Dave Says:

Lynnie, but I do. It doesn’t seem like anyone else likes to talk about that, but they always bring up the snowballs at Santa from 40 years ago. I just like to prove that other teams’ fans aren’t always well behaved.

  88. Eric Says:

You guys do realize that you’re arguing with a 12 year old right? Grow up, Philadelphia. Seriously go read the comments. You guys are arguing about who has a “little league field.”

Can’t we just get back to internally arguing about how much we suck with runners in scoring position?

  89. Lynniemac Says:

Oh, I’m with you and I remember it, too. I just think that little anecdote is news to certain people.

  90. RR aka Fairweather Says:

It was a saturday the first time I had a boner. I was on the porch, having just raked the leaves. I looked out on the neighborhood as the sun set. And in the distance, over the hill, appeared our mailman doing the late rounds. His strong, sinewy calves flexed in the glistening light. The mailbag slung over his paunch. I got hard.

  91. NG Says:

well whoever is talking about the Yankees on this site is fuckin retarded..

    this is a PHILLIES PHORUM!
    not Yankees

cuz one, their ace hitter is like O for 8 so far..hasnt done crap…and he was so “hot” for the DS and CS…now he cooled down? i guess Kate Hudson didnt let him hit it before these games…..

and yeah, AJ was ON his game tonight…killing it…and Pedro got booed because the Yankees have hated him…oh well..the didnt win by much..the phillies KILLED them monday…

are we really gonna let this little nerd get to us?

come on guuuuyss we won 6 to 1….it would be 6 to 0 if jimmy didnt throw it away…and our pitcher can last the whole game with a shut out (LEE we love you!) <3 i mean…ACTIONS speak louder than words…and the phillies definitely proved that statement on monday..

  92. stealth Says:

Dave it seems like they always have and always will bring that shit up..They have nothing better to do in the national media..but yeah all of their fans are just so well behaved and die hard to their teams. give me a break.

  93. Mand Says:

We had 2 runners in scoring position other than the one that scored…

  94. Dave Says:

Eric, I totally understand that. I’ve got some anger that needs to come out, and if I do it at work or in public, I’ll get fired or arrested. Internet arguing is a victimless crime.

And yes, I know how much we sucked at the plate tonight. Usually, it helps to have RISP to suck with them on, but we couldn’t even really get that far tonight.

  95. stealth Says:

I was just having fun thats all..its all good

  96. Cole hamels'doggie backpack Says:

No, Eric. This is the “true fanbase” of the Phillies. Let them go at it….let them prove to the rest of baseball just how intelligent they really are.

  97. Ryan from LV Says:

Nothing wrong with a good e-fight

  98. dlhunter Says:

For the record, I very much enjoyed “Fairweather” and his mocking of RR.

  99. Lynniemac Says:

Agreed, dl. I’ve thought it was all pretty funny.

  100. Lynniemac Says:

    100?

  101. Dave Says:

Let’s look on the bright side. The Yankees have scored four runs in two games, A-Rod has turned back into vintage playoff A-Rod, and the Phils got the split I wanted in New York. Now, if Cole can turn back into at least a reasonable version of 2008 Cole, we’ll be fine.

  102. stealth Says:

wow Lynnie..#1 and #100 for you

  103. Mand Says:

I love that through all the arguing on this site that someone always has to take the time out to claim victory for #100. Haha

  104. Dave Says:

Dammit Lynnie. I guess that makes up for me stealing post #300 in the other thread.

  105. Lynniemac Says:

I’ve gotten #1 before, but it’s my first #100. It very much amused me.

And Dave, I honestly couldn’t agree more with your assessment of the Phillies’ situation after the split. This loss was disappointing, certainly, but I still feel good about their chances. They may not get it done, but it won’t be because they don’t have the ability to do so.

  106. Philly News Beat Says:

With tonight’s loss, it puts serious doubt into the possibilty of Pedro making another start. Perhaps it’s time to take Happ out of the pen and let the ROY prove what he can do.

  107. Phylan Says:

What? Pedro pitched quite well tonight. Giving Happ a start is asking for trouble.

  108. dlhunter Says:

happ hasnt looked good in a month. pedro was excellent tonight. we just couldve used some run support.

  109. Lynniemac Says:

Pedro got a whole 2 runs of support in his last two starts. This offense SHOULD be better than that.

  110. Phylan Says:

I would get on the offense but here is the thing: AJ Burnett, when he is on, can be a very, very good pitcher. His breaking stuff is fucking ridiculous, for one thing. Tonight he was on, it was good A.J., and he can be just about as hard to hit as Cliffton. He gives up a lot of baserunners, because his stuff breaking as filthily as it does can lead to walks, but he can make people look silly. I don’t put this one on the offense, especially an offense that managed to make the best reliever in the league throw 40+ pitches.

Back to Philly and it’s a new series.

  111. Lynniemac Says:

Phylan, my comment wasn’t so much meant as a knock on the offense as it was saying that Pedro pitched well enough to win (as he did in LA, frankly), but when he gets little run support it’s not going to happen. Burnett is a very good pitcher, and did a commendable job (though I don’t think it was especially dominating). I don’t think the “blame” for this loss lies in any one area.

  112. Gonzo Says:

+1 Jew Stars to Lynnie for hitting the century mark.

  113. Lynniemac Says:

Thanks. Sadly, it’s my greatest accomplishment today. But, I’m curious…why Jew Stars, specifically?

  114. Gonzo Says:

    It’s a Jerk thang.

  115. Lynniemac Says:

    Gotcha.

  116. Phylan Says:

Yeah we agree on that. I felt real bad for him after the LA loss. Glad to see him with a big shit eating grin coming out of the game tonight.

  117. A-Rod's Juice Says:

Is it really that hard to spell Hamels? It’s not Hammels it’s Hamels H-A-M-E-L-S…PHILLIES IN 5

  118. The Killers Zs Says:

I was nervous when they were winning. They always lose game 2. It would have upset the mojo.

  119. greenman! Says:

This is all so funny, again after Cliff Lee fucked them in the ass this message board was troll free. Thats how it goes with these types though, bandwagoners jump ship when they are losing.

  120. Darth Sabathia Says:

Yankee Trolls that do not come back to fight after a defeat are a shame to the Empire. Now that we get to face Fat Joe Blanton and his greaseballs and Hamels we will have no trouble peckerslapping you bastards.

  121. Tropicalpop Says:

You get way to worked up with these dumb sports. Also layoff that Ryan person he is nuts and I guess that is what he wants to be seen as so layoff. As I was saying sports are a fanominal pasttime but they aren’t your future nor your well being so get over who wins and loses and do something more productive….if that’s possible.

  122. Darth Sabathia Says:

And you should go jump in front of a train. If you don’t care, why post on a message board at 6:30 in the morning. If you were a Yankees fan you would already be on your way to a camp.

  123. Watrick Says:

Hey meech.one-congrats on creating a blog/message board that is so popular, even fans of the other team come. It may not be the most eloquent of debates at times, but just think about how last year, you averaged what? 10 comments a post? Way to go.

  124. will.H Says:

    tropicalpop,

i want to know more about this “fanominal pasttime.”

maybe you’re right, there is more to lyfe

  125. Watrick Says:

Oh, an because of all these new posts, even more reason why you should put a “home” button at the bottom of the screen.

  126. eR0CK Says:

Anyone else see the base runners in the 8th not in motion when Utley hit? MIGHT have saved us from a double play since Jimmy and Shane are so fast … just sayin.

  127. dUb-iLL Says:

I thought Pedro pitched just fine last night, but Burnett pitched lights out. He really had good stuff last night. Couldn’t get any rhythm going at all. No shame at all losing one game up there. Looking forward to the weekend and the Hamels, Lee, Blanton home set. If the Phills bats are on there will be no stopping them.

PS-Please ignore these NY losers, they are just looking for the attention they never got from their asshole parents while growing up in a shithole of a city.

  128. Fightins Newbie Says:

Pedro pitched well enough to win…its a shame we dont score runs for him….also heard today that he was “under the weather” for the past 2 days and didnt tell anyone…..it showed because he didnt have that “extra zip” that he had against LA.

@ lynnie…did the live blog blow up last night? I got booted, or tossed or blocked by Pete…did he say what happened?

  129. Fightins Newbie Says:

And another thing…the Yankee “fans” were really lame. I expected way more out of them. It was almost sad to see the once great franchises fans sit on their hands the whole game. Too many suits. Philly will show em how its done the next 3 days….

  130. Griswold Says:

burnett sucks. we shouldve gotten at least 5 runs against him. i dont know what was wrong with the hitters last night, but they better step it up tomorrow, and hamels better step it up as well

  131. Crane Kick Says:

I want to fight Mark Teixiera. That is all.

  132. will.H Says:

crane kick, id help you but im sure its not the first time Teixera’s been tag teamed

  133. Yanks in 5 Says:

I’m so jealous of Kate Hudson! I would loooove to get graphic telling my parents about his body.

  134. phatty Says:

    Matt Stairs went indeed.

  135. Fightins Newbie Says:

@yanks in 5….what is up with A-rods ear lobes? It looks like Kate Hudson chewed them off…pretty gross.

  136. Yanks in 5 Says:

    I am a retard

  137. photographer N Says:

I have the same World Series batting average as A-Rod.

  138. NG Says:

you guys are talking about phillies fan vs yankees fans like they arent similar?

yankees fans are loud and obnoxious and so are we..i mean, ive seen people get their ass beat for wearing an Orioles hat to the stadium…like really? the O’s suck..who cares if they are wearing it…atleast they have the balls to wear that cap around knowin how bad that team is……

its so sad that baseball has come to this…its like no one can show up in Philly to see their favorite team play unless its the Phillies…they would get murdered…and its so sad to say that…but its true.

now, i dont know what happens in New York but i can count on it that its almost the same..

its a shame. people just want to support their team.

Its like a courageous act of god if someone shows up at a Phillies game with another teams colors on.

  139. phatty Says:

yankees fans get the loud and obnoxious tag like us except they are weak sauce. that stadium has been quiet as shit. shame on them.

  140. will.H Says:

“its so sad that baseball has come to this…”

    History lesson:

Violence isnt a brand new concept, especially in the world of sports. Dont act like this just started 8 years ago.

  141. Phylan Says:

@eROCK, even if it had worked, I would’ve been pissed if Charlie sent the runners, down 2 runs in the 8th with 1 out and Utley at the plate. I thought that was one of the better calls he’s made lately and I don’t know why the media is getting on him about THAT.

  142. CCya Says:

Bandwagoners are the ones I hate the most.

It’s like…kids know me in school as the one they can actually truly argue baseball with, one of the truly knowledgeable fans…instead of the other “fans” who just yell PHILLIES SUCK, LEE SUCKS, HAMELS SUCKS COCK, etc.

I tend to admit when the other team has bested us (like last night. Burnett had it, and Pedro didn’t have it enough.) and the fans for other teams say they don’t see that anymore. Again. Sad. People run and hide when their team loses, then come back to rub it in when they kick ass. Even Phils bandwagoners do that. People in my school today didnt want to talk about the freaking game in front of Yankees fans. That’s sad. Very very sad.

I pride myself on being known as a knowledgeable fan but that compliment implies how downhill sports fandom has gone.

  143. Deej Says:

I know Burnett pitched lights out, but does anyone kinda feel like the Phillies didnt put together a good game plan against him? We all know this team watches alot of video, and that theyre a great fastball hitting team. But it was REALLY frustrating watching our guys look at that first pitch fastball every single at bat. Its no secret that once Burnett gets ahead in the count, that hes practically unhittable on a night like that. They should have went up early with some good first hacks and the complexion of the game could have been completely changed. Anyone else share the same feeling?

  144. Phylan Says:

I disagree because I hate first pitch swinging. Patience is the key, especially with Burnett’s pitch count going high early, and the possibility that he’d have to come out in the 5th or 6th. It was when they started swinging at the first pitch that Burnett had an easier time, inducing poor contact and having quick innings. In general I like these hitters to take the first pitch (fuck you Feliz) to settle in, and have a nice, patient at bat. Even when it’s a strike, these hitters are just as comfortable 0-1 as they are with no strikes.

  145. will.H Says:

there are times to swing first pitch, but its few and far between. you have to suck the pitcher into first pitch fastball with men on base. swinging first pitch down by 2 with no one on is useless, but thats basic baseball. sometimes it can start a rally, but you better be damn sure youre getting the pitch you want.

especially a guy like mariano, take take take, swing

  146. Deej Says:

I hate first pitch swinging too, but theres some nights when a pitcher has it that you have to if its there. Its not that Im not confident with the at 0-1, its just the Burnett was that much more dominant when he got ahead of the hitters. He was the one who dictated the pace of the at bats, and hes the one who had the most success.

  147. yes Says:

Pressure is on the Phillies’ offense in Game 3 as far as I’m concerned. Cole’s got a lot of work to do and he’s obviously not having the kind of post-season he did last year. But I think with the rest he’s had, the time to clear his mind after a lot of excitement in his personal life, less weight on his shoulders in terms of “ace” expectations, and a bigger spotlight than he’s ever been in, I have a good feeling that he’s going to deliver an outing that goes beyond what most people think he’s capable of right now.

The Yankee-backers gave all kinds of edges to the Yankees coming into this series, including better starting rotation depth, but I wouldn’t agree with that. Cliff Lee can be as good, or better than CC (and he was), Pedro’s consistently good starting efforts would balance out with Burnett’s wildcard nature (but unfortunately for us, Burnett was on his game and Pedro’s good wasn’t enough), and Hamels can be every bit as good as Pettitte. I mean, we’re going into game 3 with last year’s World Series MVP against the Yankees weakest (but of course still solid) starter, and I think it’s important to remember that.

The offense needs to feed off the home energy and get the bats working again. Our starting rotation has already been better than most would have thought, but the big issue right now is that on the other side, the lineup has allowed the Yankees starters to be as good as they were expected to be. Game 2 was a reality check, a response to the fact that in Game 1, CC wasn’t far off Cliff’s pace, and if it weren’t for Chase Utley’s effort we might not have been able to get to the bullpen and blow the game open. If the offense puts it together and jumps all over Pettitte, they’ll steal the momentum, and a great deal of confidence back in this series. It’ll be one thing if Cole can deliver a win, but a whole nother if the offense clicks and terrorizes Pettitte.

  148. Phylan Says:

I would say Pedro was “good enough,” personally. He held the Yankees’ offense to 3 runs over 6 IP with 8 Ks and 2 walks, and one of those earned runs was a bequeathed runner that CHOP allowed to score. It’s just Burnett happened to be at his best and as a consequence the offense could not support Martinez.

  149. Phylan Says:

(And this is coming from a guy who wanted Cole to start that game)

  150. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

@Deej: Couldn’t agree more. The Phils seemed to be waiting for Burnett to implode instead of making him implode by being agressive early in the count. There’s a time and place for swinging at the first pitch (Pedro Feliz has not gotten this memo throughout the playoffs) but you can be overly patient too. Burnett clearly wanted to come out of the shoot and establish the fastball early in the game and early in the count. That’s a pretty darn good time to start swinging because after those fastballs, a hitter is at the mercy of the pitcher. And by being too patient they were at his mercy. They’ll make the necessary adjustments. This team is right where it needs to be.

  151. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

Just saw this on ESPN.com. Burnett threw a first pitch strike to the first 11 Phillies batters of the game.

Burnett threw well and took advantage of an expansive strike zone. And Pedro threw one hell of a game too. He made a mistake to Texiera and the ball to Matsui wasn’t the worst pitch in the world. Down and in is a bad location for a lefty but I’ve seen worse pitches made. I think I would’ve backed the pitch prior the homerun up with another change up, but that’s why I’m in the comfort of my living room and not on the field. Pedro kept the Phillies in the game and for a starting pitcher that’s really all you can ask. I don’t understand all of the banter from Yankees fans as if Pedro got lit up by that lineup. He absolutely held his own.

  152. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

I realilze I’m talking to myself here, but to give credence about Feliz swinging early and often:

Feliz has made eight outs in seven plate appearances on just 19 pitches.

  153. will.H Says:

ozzie, im waiting for someone to ask how you can make 8 outs in 7 plate appearances, then i want you to respond to them with the right answer.

  154. Luis A. Rosado Says:

A.J. Burnett was simply dominating, the Phils couldn’t get to him. Plain and simple, this loss falls on the Phils offense. Pedro did his job and kept the Phils in the game. Unlike some of the people here, I don’t think Charlie was idiot by starting Pedro last night. Pedro had the experience and wherewithal to start that game last night. A.J. Burnett is a gamble in these spots and he came up big last night. Give him credit. We had a chance in the eighth and blew it. I figured with the walk to Rollins and the single to Victorino, Utley was going to at least tie the game. But unfortunately, he grounded into an inning-ending double play. That’s baseball. Win or lose, I can’t get mad at this team. The Phils have been real good this past decade. This is probably, if you think about it, the winningest team in baseball this decade outside of the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Twins, and Cardinals.

  155. Lynniemac Says:

will, your comment #124 was fanominal.

Non-newbie, I don’t think Pete knows what happened. There were a few other issues too (Pete couldn’t approve some and couldn’t publish others, for instance), so I think there were just a bunch of glitches going on.

PhotographerN, my BA is tied with yours and A-Rod’s. I’d be willing to settle for 1/100th of what he makes.

Ozzie, I think Burnett also threw 23 of 26 (or thereabouts) first pitch strikes overall, as well.

  156. Luis A. Rosado Says:

This team, regardless of what happens in this series, is that best TEAM I’ve ever seen. They embody that word in every sense of it. When these guys get old and retired, who knows if the Phils will ever be this good again. Baseball is cyclical, just like life, and a decade from now, we could end up like the shitty Mets and the mid to late 90s Phillies. You never know. With that said, we should appreciate just how special this team really is.

  157. Darth Sabathia Says:

I don’t think any Yankee fan expected A.J to pitch that well. Andy Four Rings on the other hand, well, he’s the type that fists burn victims. Luckily for us, Hamels is into that sort of thing.

  158. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

willH. should I just kill the suspense??

To everyone pondering how you can make 8 outs in 7 plate appearances……you ground into a double play. Which Feliz did in the top of the 7th in Game 1.
