May 4 Game Recap: Phillies 6, Cardinals 1
Posted by Dash Treyhorn at 11:16 pm ET 10 Comments

What happened?

The Phillies defeated the best team in the National League behind a strong performance from Joe Blanton and homers from Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard.

Who did what?

Joe Blanton pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits to earn his first win of the season. He walked two and struck out three.

Ryan Howard was 2 for 3 with a grand slam (5) and 4 RBIs.

Jayson Werth was 2 for 4 with a homer (3) and 2 RBIs.

Kyle Lohse gave up six runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Joe Thurston was 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Ryan Ludwick was 1 for 3 with a walk.

But what does this all mean?

The Phillies followed the formula that led them to the World Series last year: Solid pitching and production from the middle of the lineup.

Jayson Werth’s two-run bomb got the Phillies on the board, and Howard’s big fly with the bases sacked was the nail in the coffin for the Cards. Howard continued his dominance against the Cardinals in St. Louis, where he is hitting .368 with 6 homers and 24 RBIs in 15 career games at Busch Stadium.

Joe Blanton was sharp on the mound, in what the Phillies can only hope is a trend for the right hander. He controlled his pitches and didn’t walk a ton of batters, which proved to be his Achillies heel in his last few starts.

This was a huge win for the Phillies, who haven’t fared too well since their five game winning streak. Beating the best team in the National League while on the road is a huge confidence builder, and with a series against the Mets and Johan Santana looming, confidence is going to be key.

What’s next for our heroes?

In the second game of the two game series, Brett Myers (1-2, 4.83) takes on Adam Wainwright (3-0, 2.76).

i’m really glad they didn’t let LaRussa drive the injury cart out to Ankiel tonight…he can’t afford another DUI.

  2. will.H Says:

barkley would have made a pitstop for a beej.

nice to see the phils work lohse into some deep counts then hit some dead red meatballs into the seats.

  3. Argive Says:

Sure hope Ankiel’s OK . . . that was a nasty hit he took, to say the least. Great guy, and he simply cannot catch a break.

  4. Gonzo Says:

Perhaps he can heal quicker by going back on the steroids.

  5. GTO--Josh Says:

I hope this is not a continuing trend:

Joe Blanton (1-2) allowed a run in six innings for his first win since Sept. 26 while giving Philadelphia’s rotation only its fifth win this year. Jayson Werth added a two-run shot for the Phillies, who chased Kyle Lohse (3-1) with one out in the fifth for his shortest outing since Aug. 12, 2008.

Head + centerfield wall = ouch.

    Hope he recovers ok

  6. Gonzo Says:

I assume you are a Cards fan, GTO? If so, I hope this trend continues til November.

  7. Gamecock Says:

Excuse us, but the team from Philadelphia is the best team in the NL. What a moronic statement to suggest the Red Turds are a premium team. Did you actually watch their defense, assessed the pitching? Please spare us with the nonsense commentary.

  8. Eminencegirl Says:

So what’s Blanton’s ERA as of today? 8.41 might only be the number of burgers he can consume in an hour now. I don’t know who scares me more, Blanton or Chan Ho Pork.

  9. maria Says:

I think he meant best team in the NL in terms of record. If you start the season 17-6, I think you can say that.

  10. GTO Says:

    @ Gonzo

    Hell no!

    Diehard Phillies.

I was referring to the fact that it is only our 5th win for our starters this year. I was drunk when I pulled that quote so I pulled too much.

    sue me Muppet man!
