What happened?
Antonio Bastardo earned his second win of the season as the Phillies defeat the Dodgers to split the four game series.
Who did what?
Antonio Bastardo (2-0) earned his second win of his career in as many starts. He gave up two runs on seven hits and one walk in five plus innings. He stuck out four.
Shane Victorino went 2 for 5 with a homer (5), a run and 2 RBIs.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 5 with a homer (17) and an RBI.
Raul Ibanez went 1 for 4 with a double (15).
Jimmy Rollins went 2 for 4 with a run.
Pedro Feliz went 1 for 2 with 2 runs and an RBI.
Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 3 with a homer (3) and 2 RBIs.
Randy Wolf (3-2) took the loss on six earned in 6.1 innings. He gave up eight hits, one walk and struck out four.
Andre Ethier went 1 for 4 with a run.
Casey Blake went 2 for 4 with a double (13) and a run.
Matt Kemp went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
What does this mean?
After two tough losses in very winnable games against the Dodgers, the Phillies’ offense came to life to give Antonio Bastardo some much needed support in his second start of the season. Bastardo was solid in five plus innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits. It was an improvement over his last start, as he effectively used his slider and changeup to complement his fastball. In the series, Phillies’ starters have allowed two or fewer runs in each start. That’s pretty good, considering that L.A. boasts one of the N.L.’s best offenses.
The offense was the best it’s been all series, patiently waiting out Wolf until tacking on three runs in the seventh to blow the game open. Jimmy Rollins had two hits in the six hole and looked comfortable in the box, and Carlos Ruiz is continuing to contribute at the dish with a two run homer.
But after losing the previous two games in heartbreaking fashion, the Phils were behind the eight ball to split against the Dodgers. In reality, the Phillies were set up for the sweep (conservitely, they win at least three), but taking two from the Dodgers is still pretty good, especially with the way the rotation looked just a month ago.
With this win, the Phillies improve to 33-22 on the season, and they maintain a three game lead in the east.
What’s next for our heroes?
After an off-day on Monday, the Phils conclude their road trip with a three game set in New York against the Mets. In game one, J.A. Happ (4-0, 2.48) takes on Johan Santana (7-3, 2.00) in a rematch of July 4th, 2008.
Bonus baseball!
With the off-day tomorrow, be sure to look out for my monthly wrapup, which will be examinging the Phils’ successess from April ’til now.

If Bastardo gets more efficient with his pitches, he’ll be an absolute beast.

Leaving LA with a 2-2 split that could have very easily been a 4-0 sweep is very encouraging. Even more so than the back to back sweeps heading into this series. The last four days through this weekend are easily the toughest stretch we have on the schedule all season. Coming out of the next two series healthy and with a handful of wins will be critical!

That was a HUGE win for the Phillies tonight. Considering they should have swept the Dodgers, it was big to come back and win today after two tough losses. Dropping three in a row could have spelled disaster going in to visit a struggling New York team. That’s the last thing they would have needed.
Now let’s beat their injured asses into submission.

Now entering a 3-game series with the team we’re three games ahead of…

@Tug
Hopefully… we’ll be leaving that 3-game series, six games ahead.

“Man can that Joe Morgan call a game! He was one of those scrappy guys that just knew how to win and always played the game the right way, kind of like David Eckstein! ON-tonio BAY-startdo came out looking like bit of a space cadet but he started getting that fastball and slide ball over and he threw a lot of ground ball outs. He might be your typical lefty but I think he might get another start”-Chris Wheeler

not one mention of “slide piece” from joe morgan last night

Joe Morgan, in the sixth inning (?), on the potential Dodgers/Phils NLCS rematch: “…you’ve got to be able to manufacture runs to win. You can’t rely solely on the longball…”
Phillies, seventh inning onward: Three HRs that produce four runs.
Translation: Morgan, you’re an idiot.

Huge win. Nice to finish the west coast swing 5-2 (coulda, shoulda been 7-0)…
For me, it was almost as entertaining as watching our little Bastard deal as it was to watch the lady Phils Phan behind home plate play with her Phanatic stuff doll the whole game.
Who carries that nearly life-size sucker around at a game?!
Now let’s go hammer the Muts in their dump of a new park…

Even though Randy Wolf is dead to me, it was nice to see his reanimated corpse give up 6 runs.

True dat, Lynnie. Wolf was overrated here in philly.
