June 4 Game Recap: Phillies 3, Dodgers 0
Posted by Dash Treyhorn at 1:07 am ET 26 Comments

What happened?

Cole Hamels tossed a complete game shutout against the Dodgers, extending their winning streak to seven games.

Who did what?

Cole Hamels (4-2) earned the win with a complete game, five hit shutout. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

Chase Utley went 1 for 3 with a double (9), 2 walks and a run.

Jayson Werth went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Ryan Howard went 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI.

Raul Ibanez went 1 for 4 with a double (14) and an RBI.

Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 3 with a run.

Clayton Kershaw (3-4) allowed 2 runs in 5.1 innings to take the loss. He allowed four hits, three walks and struck out five.

What does this mean?

On just 97 pitches, Cole Hamels shut down the Dodgers over nine innings. He didn’t walk a batter, and he retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced. There isn’t much more to say about his performance, save for OMG HE WAS SO AWZOME LOLZ! But really, Hamels was just dominant. After a rough start against the Nationals last week, he bounced back with a brilliant return to form.

Of course, the offense came through tonight when it needed. An early sacrifice fly from The Big Man was all the Phillies would need, but late hits from Ibanez and Werth were added insurance for the Ace.

Cole’s magnificent start is just the tip of the iceberg for the Phillies, who have won seven in a row, have a MLB-leading 20 wins on the road, a four game lead in the National Leage east, and an 8-2 record in their last 10 games.

What’s next for our heroes?

In game two of the series, Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.75) faces off against Eric Milton (2-0, 3.14).

For the first time ever, Wheels said it best:

Cole Hamels was Cole Hamels tonight!

  2. Tug Haines Says:

    Hamels Original Masterpiece

    Amazing Pitching by King Cole.

    Amazing Fielding by the Defense.

Amazing opening to the 2009 Season.

  4. Tug Haines Says:

    ’twas a masterpiece.

  5. Here Come Da Judge Says:

    The Ace

  6. bigmyc Says:

I look back on all the bridge jumpers from April (a lousy April from the Phillies? what a surprise) and just have to laugh.

No Romero. No Starting Rotation stability. No clutch hitting. No bullpen strength. No problem.

    Just saying.

  7. me Says:

anybody know what the deal is with franzke? jj’s been doing play by play the last couple nights…

  8. meech.one Says:

He had to fly back to the east coast for “personal reasons”. No one said what those reasons are exactly, I hope everything’s alright.

  9. Dash Treyhorn Says:

@me J.J. said that Franzke had to fly back to Philladelphia for personal reasons, and he should be back for the series with the Mets. I don’t mind J.J., but I really miss Scott. He and L.A. are the best in the booth.

  10. Dash Treyhorn Says:

@meech Are you showing me up by replying first? On my post? Damn you, sir! Damn you!

Also, I second that. Hope everything is okay with the Franzke and Co.

  11. meech.one Says:

    haha

  12. Harry Says:

So where are the people who think Peavy is better than Hamels?

  13. Colin_K Says:

Eric Milton????!??? WTF?? I had heard he was pitching in the minors for them, but to be 2-0 with and ERA around 3? I know its early in the season, but Eric F’ing Milton?

  14. Frank Rizzo Says:

I didn’t realize that the Phils and LA have the 2 best records in MLB heading into last night until TMac astutely pointed that out before the game. That being said, the Phils are clearly the best team in baseball right now.

  15. Eminencegirl Says:

I understand that Franzke had a funeral to attend.

Am I the only one who is glad that tonight is the last of these 10 pm start times? That shit is too late for my sleepy ass. I have to come here in the morning to see what I fell asleep during.

I really don’t think there’s a better week to be had in Philadelphia this month. Phils SWEEP Mets get SWEPT. (By the PIRATES!!! MUHUHUHAHAHAHAHA!)

  16. me Says:

meech & dash: thanks for the info…i too hope everything’s alright with franzke. jim jackson was an able replacement but you cant beat LA and scott. those two could have their own sitcom.

  17. Dash Treyhorn Says:

@Eminencegirl Seconded. These late nights are especially rough when you have to roll into the office at 8AM.

@me Franzke and L.A. are, by far, the best radio team in the game. But I am a homer, journalistic objectivity be damned.

  18. How do you spell retard? Says:

    @Colin_K

    ERIC MILTON!?!?!??! GAGAHAHAHHAAA!!!!
/musta seen that bastard pitch every damn time I went to games when he was with the Fightins’

  19. for sure Says:

Its 8-2 in the last 10 buddy

  20. D.Whitmore Says:

im looking foreward to wheels verbal fellatio of eric milton. “The thing about Milton is that he uses that great cutter to run in on righties. Hes also a bit goofy out since he comes from different arm angles, hes your typical lefty alright and he even threw a no hitter once!”

  21. me Says:

@ dash: thats exactly what i love about LA: complete, unbiased and unabashed homer-ism. and more often that not he speaks unvarnished truth with the authority (ie actual pro baseball experience) that tmac and wheels lack. also he invented a game called “ass quarters”.

  22. Albert Says:

Great win last night. Nice to see Hamels return to his WFC form.

  23. Gonzo Says:

@ Whitmore: That is totally something Wheels would say. Damn creepy.

  24. Harry Says:

We fortunately are going against Eric Milton tonight. UNfortuantely, the Dodgers are going against Jamie Moyer.

  25. Colin_K Says:

    @Whitmore – classic Wheels spit!

  26. Argive Says:

My good feelings about Andersen were cemented when I read the Franzke interview on Phillies Nation.

    http://www.philliesnation.com/archives/2009/04/the-pn-interview-scott-franzke/

    Specifically:

“I think [LA's] given me a tremendous insight into the city and the people here. He’s adopted Philadelphia as his home too, and he’s got a keen understanding of what our fans want in a team, a broadcaster or whatever. Maybe he knows this from spending so much time on barstools talking to people.

Which leads to the other lesson he’s provided: I can’t outlast him on a barstool.”
