What happened?
The Phillies cruised to a victory as J.A. Happ threw the first shutout of his career.
Who did what?
J.A. Happ (5-0) tossed a complete game shutout for the win. He gave up five hits, no walks and struck out four.
Jayson Werth went 4 for 4 with two homers (15), a double (13) and three RBIs.
Ryan Howard went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Pedro Feliz went 2 for 5 with a homer (4), a double (17) and 2 RBIs.
Chris Coste went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 5 with a double (11) and two RBIs.
Brad Mills (0-1) took the loss after giving up eight runs in four innings. He gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out seven.
What does this mean?
If there is one thing that’s plagued Phillies over this slump where they’ve lost 11 of 14, it’s the lack on consistentsy on both side of the ball. If they pitch well, they can’t hit. And versa vice. If you go back to when they lost the extra innings game against the Red Sox to kick off this stretch of interleauge play, you won’t often find a solid pitching outing being supported by the bats. If there is one thing that will lead to a tough stretch, it’s that.
However, today’s game marks the second such instance on the road trip where the bats and arms were banging on all cylinders, as the Phillies went on to rout the Blue Jays behind a huge day from Jayson Werth’s bat and J.A. Happ’s arm.
The Phils took the lead in the first inning behind Werth’s 500 foot blast that landed in the upper deck, and that was all they needed as Happ shut down the Jays’ hitters to earn the first shutout of his professional career. In truth, you can’t aptly describe how huge with game was. With the team reeling, Happ proved to be the stopper, and sometimes, that’s all a team needs to get back on track.
And after the team had a closed door, 20 minute meeting after last night’s loss, this win could not have come at a better time. And with interleague play ending tomorrow, the Phils can get back to doing what they do best: Beating the hell out of the National League.
What’s next for our heroes?
The Phils bid farewell to interleague play in game three of the series, with Jamie Moyer (5-6, 5.97) taking on Brian Tallet (5-4, 4.36).

Very nice to see Happ throw a complete game shutout. He’s arguably the Phillies’ best pitcher so far, starter, pen, or otherwise. He’s now got a 3 ERA and he’s 5-0. Very nice.
And it’s never a bad thing to give the bullpen a complete rest.

I just like to see the Fightins take care of bidness for a change.

I’ll be more impressed if they come back and win the series tomorrow. This is good, but Utley still struggled and so did a few other guys at the plate. I think we have a few bandaides that were falling off, and it started to snowball into the team just being miserable. Still, we can wint he series tomorrow, and that’s more important than where Werth’s homer landed. He’s been the only consistent hitter on the team the last two weeks, even if he’s done some dumb things at the plate as well.
Did we finally win because they sat Scott Rolen? Man, that guy is good.

I missed all of today’s game, was playing Softball all day. But I’m incredibly relieved to hear that the team won, and I’m hoping this will add some momentum, to propel this team into a winning streak. Cause they sure could use one.
…as far as Happ, I cannot say enough good about that kid, and I think he’s a star in the making. I saw it last season when he was in relief, and I couldn’t believe that he didn’t get that fifth start earlier in the season.
I do look forward to catching the replay of this later tonight.
