What happened?
The Phillies scored four in the first, but were trounced by the Rays the rest of the way to drop their first road series since the beginning of May.
Who did what?
Antonio Bastardo (2-3) gave up six runs in 3.2 innings to take the loss. He allowed seven hits, three walks and struck out three.
Greg Dobbs went 2 for 4 with a run.
Chase Utley went 1 for 4 with a run.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 4 with a double (18) and two RBIs.
Matt Stairs went 1 for 2 with a double (2) and an RBI.
Pedro Feliz went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Andy Sonnanstine (6-7) gave up four over 5.1 to earn the win. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Carl Crawford went 2 for 4 with two doubles (15) and two RBIs.
Pat Burrell went 2 for 4 with a double (5) and an RBI.
Carlos Pena went 1 for 5 with a double (16) and an RBI.
Ben Zobrist went 2 for 4 with a homer (16) and two RBIs.
Willy Aybar went 3 for 4 with a homer (6) and three RBIs.
What does this mean?
[Author's Note: Instead of the recap, I thought I'd write a sarcastic letter to the Phillies that hopefully captures the frustration that the fans are dealing with right now. With this loss, the Phils have dropped 10 of their last 12, and now have two [2!] teams within one game of them in the division.]
Dear Phillies, how’s it going? I’m okay, just hanging out, you know. Dad is up to his old tricks, just tinkering in the garage like he always does. You know, I don’t think he’ll ever get that mower to work. [chuckle]
Anyway, I just want to let you know that I’m completely thrilled with the way you’ve been playing lately. We, and I mean the fans, were elated that you went on a tear and won 10 out of 12, culminating with a series win in New York. That was just super. Really, it was.
But to be honest, we really couldn’t be happier that you decided to tank it right now. You don’t want to get too far ahead of the Mets and the Marlins, right? Yeah. It’s not as if though you could be up seven or even eight games had you not absolutely crapped the bed against the Blue Jays and Orioles to go 1-8 at home. And these last two games, well, you were just too fundamentally sound. You’re fielding and baserunning was so crisp that you couldn’t focus on other things, like, you know, winning.
But that’s okay Phils, it is. It is a marathon and not a sprint, am I right? Even though the Mets basically have one reliable pitcher and their offense is less potent than weak tea, it’s totally not a problem that you have let them get to within a half-game of first place. And the Marlins. Those pesky Marlins. I think it’s so nice of you to let them pretend like they have a shot to catch you. I remember when I would play baseball with my little brother. Good times.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that we are all totally cool with the style of baseball you’ve been playing lately. Totally cool.
Well, that’s all for me. I have to take the dog out, otherwise…well, you know.
Give my best to the missus, and please keep in touch.
All the best,
Dash
What’s next for our heroes?
The Phillies wrap up interleague play with a three game series in Toronto. In game one, J.A. Happ (4-0, 3.47) sqaures off against Ricky Romero (4-3, 3.59.)

This was just embarrassing. Andy Sonnanstine sucks, and the the Phillies couldn’t do anything after the first inning.
They managed just THREE hits after the 4-run first. That’s just great.
Anybody who wants to see the unbelievable magic trick the Phillies pulled off tonight should check out the site. It’s a good one.

I guess Carlos Peña was right about this team. Maybe they should have moved the 2008 World Series to June 2009, just to make it fair.

Well… my hope is wearing thin right now. They’re losing in very disheartening ways, and I think it’s finally time for an airing out. “We’re still in First” doesn’t hold up anymore, you guys are sucking right now.

nugget of wisdom heard from rays fans sitting behind me tonight:
“fuck the phillies, i hope we play either them or the yankees in the world series this year”
at this point my head exploded

They changed the rotation, Cole is pitching tomorrow.
Someone kidnapped the phils & it’s been the nats in the phiils uniforms the last 2 weeks, right?
June 26th, 2009 at 12:47 am
FYI: Cole Hamels is pitching tomorrow night.

We just need that first chorus of ‘boos’ if they play poorly in the next home game…maybe that will get some attention from the ‘players’.

There are several things wrong with your letter.
1. Dad doesn’t have a garage.
2. The mower works just fine.
3. Please tell me I don’t have another little brother.
4. The dog stays outside all the time.
other than that the sarcasm was good

The fact that this team loses in June every year is no excuse for it happening this year. We’ve lost way too many games that the 2008 Phillies would have won.

Last night I heard a theory on how to get J-Roll jumpstarted, and it makes perfect sense. Or maybe I was drinking. (I was).
You know in [insert sports movie] where the star player/underdog/hero in the film loses his way or doesn’t play up to his potential? How does he always get that spark back? He drives slowly through some random neighborhood and sees a bunch of kids playing ball. For the joy of it. And he stops. And he gets out. And he gets in the game. And the kids don’t know who he is and they don’t respect him. They bust his balls and get a few plays over on him. And then it starts raining. And they keep playing. And then it clicks, and the hero starts laughing and beating the balls off the kids. Cause he gets it.
Jimmy needs to go get his ass kicked by a bunch of 12 year olds in some neighborhood sandlot.
(Thanks to Anne K. for this theory that made perfect sense last night.)

I think this team needs some Nick Nolte: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz1ZvOcmBQs

Can you please add the video of sarge talking about “Extention Daddy” ? I almost died laughing!

What’s pissing me off is that the Phillies are starting to do things the other teams used to do against us to lose games. We used to be the ones hustling to second and beating a lazy flip by the SS to keep an inning alive. Other teams used to make stupid baserunning errors like not tagging up on FIRST FUCKING BASE. I dont know whats going on with these guys but it needs to stop. Get your heads out of your asses and start playing like we all know you can. This isnt 2008 anymore fellas, its time to battle and show what youre really made of. Any team can get hot and win a World Series. The true great teams show resiliency and battle game in and game out to stay on top and win another championship. Starting tonight, lets build some momentum going into the ASB and give ourselves some breathing room in the division. And what better place to start that than America’s Hat, Canada?

I think J-Roll needs a montage…. MONNN-TAAAAGE!
