What happened?
The Phillies jumped all over David Price to take an early lead to continue their winning ways on the road.
Who did what?
Jamie Moyer (5-6) gave up one run over six innings to earn the win. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out four.
Shane Victorino went 1 for 2 with two walks, a run and an RBI.
Chase Utley went 2 for 4 with a double (15), a homer (16) and 4 RBIs.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 4 with a double (17) and an RBI.
John Mayberry Jr. went 1 for 4 with a homer (3) and three RBIs.
Carlos Ruiz went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
David Price (1-2) got shelled for 10 runs (5 earned) in 4.1 innings to take the loss. He gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
B.J. Upton went 2 for 5 with a double (15).
Carlos Pena went 1 for 4 with a double (15) and a run.
Jason Bartlett went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
What does this mean?
When it rains, it pours.
The Phillies officially got off the schneid three batters into this game when Chase Utley’s double to left field gave the Phillies the only runs they would need. Of course, adding four more runs in the inning didn’t hurt, and a four-run fourth was just the cherry on top of this delicious win-sundae. After getting shut down by lesser pitchers at The Bank, they went to work on David Price, a pitcher who could be downright nasty. He was bested by Jamie Moyer, a man who could be his father. Moyer was solid over six, with his only hiccup coming in the fourth where he issued two walks and gave up the only run of the game.
This was a win that the Phillies desperately needed, and even that is an understatement. The win gives them a 2.5 game lead in the division, and their 24-9 record on the road is still, by far, the best in the game.
It only takes one win to get the momentum back on your side, and a solid outing from your starter, supported by a 10-run outburst is one way to get it done.
What’s next for our heroes?
In game two of the series, Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.28) takes on Matt Garza (4-5, 3.83).
Bonus baseball!
When she isn’t being a smokin’ hottie or starring in poorly written television shows, Alyssa Milano can be found over at her blog at mlb.com, where she waxes poetic on America’s Pasttime.
While Milano might be the game’s hottest fan (at least until Heather Graham dons a cap), she clearly isn’t a purist. This is evidenced by her most recent blog wherein she makes her pick for this year’s All Star game.
I don’t want to spoil it for you, but she picks all Dodgers (except for Carlos Beltran) to represent the National Leauge. I can’t tell you how much this angers me. Oh wait, yes I can. This angers me immensely. Given the format of the game, the All Star voting process is a joke. When home field advantage for the World Series is on the line, then you cannot leave it up to the fans to make the right choices, because most fans are stupid homers. They pick their favorite players instead of picking the right players. Last week, Jimmy Rollins was leading the voting for shortstop, and he was set to represent the N.L. in St. Louis. As much as I love J’Roll, he shouldn’t be on the team. At least not as a starter.
If Alyssa Milano, and other fans, care about the integrity (what’s left of it) of the game, then they need to do the right thing and not vote the party line for the All Star game.
So Phillies fans (and everyone else), drop by Ms. Milano’s blog and leave her a message about how she needs to represent her fandom in a responsible and intelligent fashion. Don’t be rude or childish or crass; just educate her on how the voting process is crucial in the All Star game in its current format.
And tell her Dash Treyhorn sent you!

Glad to see the PHILS continue to win on the road, proving that they are a good team.
I was thoroughly impressed with Jamie Moyer tonight, who’s pitches 4 quality starts out of his last five, and earned his 251st Career Victory.
The PHILS offense exploded early tonight, hopefully losing the rust they’d acrewed from the last nine games. Should make for a good road trip, and then hopefully, finally carry over to CBP.
I’m liking the fact that we essentually own the RAYS since last year, hope we can get a sweep out of this series, and move up some more in the standings. A good strong road trip, and the PHILS should start to walk away with the division.
Also… down on the PHARM, Brad Lidge pitched a scoreless ninth, and looks to be making some progress back to the Majors. He’s listed as available tommorow, but there’s a chance that Cholly will give him another day off.
That’s it for my wrap up. GO PHILS!

On a side note, I do intend of heading over to miss Milano’s blog, and educating her on how voting for the ALL-STAR game is supposed to be done.

Alright, we’re already doing better in interleague games this year than last year! Wait, people were slitting their wrists over last week? Oh, silly new phans with lack of perspective over a 162 game schedule…
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
It figures… the only motivation the Phils needed was for me to add the starter for the other team to my fantasy roster!
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Sorry, I lied, according to my game by game W/L schedule from last year, we’re at the same number, even though, there will be 3 more inter league games.
Anyone else notice CSN kept saying “Interleague” for the Mets/Cardinals game?
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:56 pm
For Dash’s greater benefit; it’s “purist.”
Just sayin’.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:57 pm
@Watrick:
Yes… I noticed that, but it’s not the first time they’ve had a “Whoopsie-Daysie”.

Dear Mr. Utley,
Thank you for hitting the ball more squarely than you have in games past recently. I’m sure a player of your work ethic understands that it’s no good hiding behind your slumping team at large and that you are ultimately accountable for your effort alone. With that said, I’d still like to see you offer at a first or second pitch once in a while. You know, kinda mix it up a lil’ bit. Keep ‘em guessing. Your line tonight, and I’m sure in your heart of hearts you’d agree, was despite getting behind early. I just think you’d more easily square your bat to the ball if you limited the amount of working room that you allow the pitcher…and I don’t mean crowding the plate.
thanx for hitting the ball like a three hole hitter again.
Your phan, bigmyc

@bigmyc Touche, sir. Corrected.
June 24th, 2009 at 12:39 am
@bigmyc
Granted I’m a little tuned up right now, so I’m gonna give you benefit of the doubt, but are you really calling out the most consistent player on the team?? I get we’re all pissed about dropping 9-10, but seriously?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:10 am
Not at all, but, going back to late ‘07, you could argue that Vic is right there with him if consistencyis your model.
I am merely suggesting, of course tounge in cheekedly, that Utley show a little “wild card” in his approach to the plate. Before you choke on your beer, please understand this isn’t a call to change anything. His approach works for him obviously, but only a fool would think that he doesn’t have the any room to tweek a few things. The book is out on the guy and his two strike patience. If I’m a pitcher with no location problems, I would fire STRIKE ONE STRIKE TWO and then goose him with an inside breaker. That’s just me. Chances are he either wiffs at it if it’s close to the zone or taps to his counter part who was playing it perfectly.
Let me make it ever more clear for you; JRoll is not a guy whom I’d like to see go FPS (first pitch swinging). He has no room to do so right now. Utley; all the room in the world.
Thanx for hangin’ in there with me.
June 24th, 2009 at 7:26 am
John Mayberry Jr. continues to impress with his bat. Lotta upside with that guy.
June 24th, 2009 at 7:52 am
I would rather the NL throw the All-Star game so the Phillies get to play on the road in the WS should they make it. Lord knows they won’t win it at home this year!
June 24th, 2009 at 8:47 am
Utley takes a first pitch strike at exactly the same rate as Carlos Ruiz swings and misses at a first pitch ball.
June 24th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Nice fairweather fans down in Tampa. Cant even sell out games with the WS matchup in town. assholes.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
David Price… *Yawn*
Anyone else remember last year how every time the camera showed him for even just a split second Buck and McCarver would instantaneously start swinging from his nutsack and talk about what a “PHENOM!!!!!!11″ he is?
If someone wants to get me an early Xmas present, they can overdub some of that audio onto video of Utley and Mayberry’s bombs from last night.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
bigmyc i agree with everything you’ve said. ive always liked utley swinging at first pitch on rare occasion because the pitcher is convinced hes the kind of batter to work the count. Most of the times he swings 2-0 or first pitch, the results are good. That once in a while aggressive hitting style keeps pitchers out of the strike zone because they’re afraid you’ll spank their first pitch fastball. i hear a lot of people yelling ‘dont swing at the first pitch’ because its basic baseball knowledge. what they dont understand is that the ball player already knows that, and hes attempting to use it to his advantage. guys like ryan howard should use this more often, the guy is awful with 2 strikes.. mostly against lefties. Sometimes we see guys using that aggressive hitting style foolishly (jimmy!) and its very frustrating. we’re on the same page, what gives?
June 24th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
You got it. Allowing yourself to go down 0-2 and get a good pitch to hit is like trying to pick up girls at a bar with a cold sore on your face and a sharpee ring around it.
June 24th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
I just want to pat myself on the back for calling Moyer dominating he young hitters
