The Philadelphia Phillies needed one more out to win their fourth straight game, but the Minnesota Twins needed only one swing.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Joe Mauer hit a two-run, game tying homer off Brad Lidge to cap a five run rally that turned the tables for the Twinkies, who scored eight runs in the final four frames to take the second game of the series by a score of 13-10.
It was a wasted effort from Cole Hamels, who allowed three earned runs over seven innings. After a rough first inning that saw the Twins send nine hitters to the plate, Hamels retired the next 13 hitters before allowing a solo homer to Justin Morneau to lead off the sixth inning. All told, it was aother fine outing from Cole, who struck out seven.
The same could not be said for Twins’ starter Kevin Slowey, who was lifted after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings, becoming the second Twins’ starting pitcher to be lifted before the third inning in as many games.
He fell victim to a Phillies offense that continued their assault on opposing pitchers, as they put up three runs in the bottom of the inning, with the blows coming on a two-run triple from Chase Utley and a sacrifice fly from Jayson Werth.
They added four more runs in the second inning, with homers coming from Wilson Valdez and Ryan Howard, to put the Phillies ahead by a score of 7-3. Raul Ibanez and Jayson Werth would later add solo shots to give the Phillies a 9-4 lead heading into the final frame.
It fell apart in the ninth for the Phils, when Jose Contreras walked Delom Young to open the frame, before allowing a pinch hit homer to former Phillie Jim Thome. After walking Nick Punto, Contreras was lifted for Brad Lidge, who got two quick outs, but not before allowing Denard Span to rope an RBI single to center to bring the Twins within two. With two away, he allowed a two-run homer to Joe Mauer, tying the game at nine-apiece.
Despite putting two on with one away in the bottom half of the ninth, the Phils failed to score, sending the game into extra innings, where Daniel Butera lead off with a solo shot off new reliever Chad Durbin. The Phils added a solo shot of their own the bottom of the tenth, when Ross Gload delivered with the game-tying shot with two away off Twins’ closer Jon Rauch.
But it was in the top of the 11th, with Danys Baez on the hill, that the Twins put the game away. With runners on second and third, Delmon Young hit an RBI infield single, followed by a two-run double from Matt Tolbert, giving the Twins the 13-10 lead, and eventually the win.
By far, this was the worst loss of the 2010 campaign for the Phillies, whose normally reliable bullpen coughed up a five game lead and a chance for a series sweep at the hands of the A.L. Central leading Twins.
While every reliever from the ninth inning on takes some blame for this loss, the bulk of it falls squarely on the shoulders of Jose Contreras, whose leadoff walk to Denard Span set in motion a series of events that ultimately led to the loss.
With a five run lead, the goal of the relief pitcher is to throw strikes, and Contreras failed to do so, allowing the Twins to get themselves back into a game that they really had no business to win.
But despite this crushing loss, the Phils (and the fans) can take a bit of solace in the fact that Cole Hamels continues to pitch well, and that the offense looked very good for the fourth straight game.
The Phils will look to take the rubber match on Sunday, when Roy Halladay (8-5, 2.36) takes on Carl Pavano (7-6, 3.92).
Cole Hamels (ND) allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out seven. At the dish, he went 1 for 3 with a run.
Placido Polacno went 2 for 5 with a double (14) and a run.
Chase Utley went 3 for 5 with a double (13), a triple (2) and three RBIs.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 6 with a homer (13) and two RBIs.
Jayson Werth went 1 for 4 with a homer (12) and an RBI.
Raul Ibanez went 2 for 3 with a homer (5) and an RBI and an RBI.
Wilson Valdez went 1 for 4 with a homer (1) and an RBI.
Brad Lidge (BS, 1) allowed two earned runs on two hits. He struck out one.
Danys Baez (L, 2-3) allowed three earned runs on two hits.
Kevin Slowey (ND) allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Joe Mauer went 1 for 5 with a homer (3) and two RBIs.
Justin Morneau went 2 for 5 with a homer (14) and three RBIs.
Delmon Young went 3 for 6 with a double (16) and two RBIs.
Jim Thome went 1 for 1 with a pinch-hit homer (6) and two RBIs.
Matt Tolbert went 1 for 2 with a double (2) and two RBIs.
Jon Rauch (BS3, W, 2-1) allowed one earned run on two hits in two innings. He struck out one.

Soul crushing.
phillies break out the lumber, and the bullpen is shaky, ill take the really good offence because more often then not the bullpen is shacky
Seriously. This team has a time machine.
Remember every 4 days in 2009 it’d go like this?
Offense murders, Offense crushes, offense DESTROYS.
Then that shaky bullpen comes in. Usually *just* Lidge. Today it was a joint effort.
SHIT SHIT SHIT!! What a bad loss
Soul crushing it was. After a loss like that you can’t even think of the bright spots…Cole did well, recovering after a rocky 1st, and the boys hit the ball well. Uncle Charlie fell asleep at the switch and allowed Joe Contrary to shit the bed.
Man… this is why you shouldn’t count your chickens or WINS before they hatch!
With the solid Hamels outing and huge lead for most of the game, we fucking totally should have had this one in the bag.
But unfortunately, our Bullpen’s suckitude clearly knows no bounds. Contreras and Lidge at least were good in most of their other outings so far this year, but WHY THE FUCK is Baez still on the team…at all?
He seems completely fucking incapable of having even a SINGLE good outing, and his only use should be in games that we’re losing by like 10 runs, and NEVER EVER in fucking close games that can still be won!
At least our offense showed up today and Hamels had an okay outing, but the ending is COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE!!!
Danys Baez needs to GO!
The Phillies have been pretty solid out of the ‘pen this season, especially Contreras and Durbin, so it’s not like today’s outing was common. It was a terrible end to a game that the Phils should have won, but let’s be real: If they played the ninth inning 100 more times, the Phillies would win over 95% of those games.
WFC11, I count my wins before they hatch depending on the matchups. I counted this one, especially by the 6th. And then the 7th. Even the 8th. I really did expect Lidge to put the lights out, because he’s been decent this year. Like you said, the ending was inexcusable.
Baez really should be DFA’d and I can’t fucking believe Ruben had to give this joker TWO FUCKING YEARS!!!
Trade him, DFA him, just do SOMETHING!
You could bring up fucking Brandon Duckworth or some other AAAA guy, and he’d probably do better than fucking Baez
Danys Baez outing log:
6/19 – 1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 ER
6/15 – 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 ER (cleanup in a 8-3 loss)
6/10 – I IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 HR
6/7 – 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 K
6/6 – 1 IP, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 0 K
6/1 – 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB
5/28 – 1 IP, 0 H, R, 1 BB, 0 K
—–5/27 – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K —-
5/23 – 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K
5/21- 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB
Anyone find it disturbing this guy has had ONE 1-2-3 inning in his LAST 10 APPEARANCES?
I’m still in disbelief. And what sucks is that you could almost see it coming. First off, you knew the game was over when Baez comes in. REALLY CHARLIE? BAEZ? How does he thank Gload for saving our asses? He continues sucking at pitching. And secondly, as soon as the offense came back after this AWFUL month and starting kicking ASS again, the bullpen started losing it. Even in our past few wins, we’ve been letting up late runs, especially in the 9th. We’ve had a big enough lead to sustain it so it wasn’t a huge deal. But this was bound to happen. Those late inning runs we’re gonna come back to haunt us. Still, how you blow a fucking FIVE RUN LEAD is beyond me. God damn bullpen. Cole Hamels and the offense should come at them with pitchforks.
I DON’T want to go to the auto dealership with Brad Lidge.
Oh and Dobbs coming to bat in the 10th and swinging at the FIRST PITCH was just the icing on the cake. Him and Baez need to be driven off a cliff.
Dobbs and Baez need to be DFA’d
BAEZ IS A DOGG!!!!!!
Baez is the goat, although honestly it probably turns out similar if Herndon is thrown out there. We are just not a team built for extra innings because we don’t have a deep bullpen. Contreras is the one that I really feel like you have to pin this on, as Dash seemed to do. It would have been one thing if he gave up three hits but by having absolutely no command he ended up walking two guys who were up there strictly to walk and giving up a 700 ft homerun. Can’t do that.
Oh and Braves win btw. Icing on the cake.
Baez sucks right now, but who’s going to replace him? People were calling for Scott Mathieson, but he obviously lacks quality secondary pitches (or at least the confidence in them). You’ve got to think some teams out of the running for the playoffs (read as the Mariners/Indians, or a usual fire-seller like the Pirates) could have a bullpen piece available for a decent price. Right now, Baez goes from set-up guy to mop-up guy, and you keep at it with the steady rotation of Durbin, Contreras as Lidge. Madson will hopefully provide a big boost once he comes back. In the meantime, we have Roy coming off a loss, so hopefully he’ll be extra motivated to restore momentum for the Phils.
Kerry Wood or Octavio Dotel look nice.
Chooch is still on the main roster, Mathieson will probably go to AAA.
-DFA Dane when Chooch is ready to play again, move will most likely be made for J-Roll.
-DFA either Baez, Dobbs or BOTH. If either one, bring up Figueroa. If both, bring up Figueroa AND Mathieson.
meh bullpen had a bad day, it’s been fine for the most part. Contreras and Lidge were awesome but just had a bad day. Hopefully once Madson gets recovered from his fight with the chair the bullpen will be more reliable. Plus I don’t think Baez is that bad and we don’t have a lot of options. We could call Figgy back up maybe, but he’s worse in my opinion.
Dobbs has to go. That’s a definite. He’ll be involved in any trade made for a bullpen arm.
How is Figgy worse? Baez hasn’t had a 1-2-3 inning in his last 8 appearances, AND Figgy works as a swingman or long reliever in case of diaster.
Baez’s ERA is only slightly worse then Figgy’s after today he got up to 5.14, Figgy is at 4.82 so I guess they are both equally shitty.
But Nelson’s only appeared in 9 games this season, including a respectable 5 IP, 2 ER spot start.
Danys Baez has a higher ERA in TRIPLE the amount of appearances (29).
How Baez even LEADS THE LEAGUE in appearances is disgusting.
Danys Baez should have merited a minor league deal at best, and Ruben Amaro Jr. gave him 2 years $5.25 million. Goddamnit.
Yeah, Gillick’s not doing that “special advisor” thing well…
Sign Dan Plesac.
Happy to see the offense alive but there is no way we are catching up to the Braves
That’s the spirit!
For how much Baez sucks, Ruben could have gotten the same suckiness for a lot less money on a Minor League deal with Adam Eaton.
Phylan will you throw out some sabremetrics and get in a fight with Eric or someone? It doesn’t happen enough these days.
Also not enough discussion about hotcakes, JReal and his girl, people outside of pubs on the 4th of July, and Amandah’s cool new way to open Coke bottles.
Dead on dude
This game left me with more questions:
When/if we get back in this thing, with the exception of Gload, is our bench good enough to make good pinch hit at bats during a pennant race/playoff run? Or do we have to rely solely on the starters?
Is this a bullpen repeat of last year, same pathetic, watching paint dry type scenarios where you know someone is just going to implode?
Why did Baez get 2 years? And does that make Cholly feel forced to put him in in key situations?
Who is on the trade market as far as bullpen help?
And lastly and most importantly IS THAT THING ON RAUCH’S NECK SOME KIND OF NAZI SWASTICA WITH WINGS THING? Am I the only one that saw that shit?
Sign Jose Mesa and Mitch Williams. Also, can we sign Dave Hollins as a bench bat?
Let’s go Roy!
Let’s go Roy!!!
Let’s go ROY!!!
LET’S GO ROY!!!!
LET’S GO ROY!!!!
How about another Father’s Day perfect game? Would make me forget yesterday’s suckfest.
guys listen, 99.99 precent of the time the phillies will win going into the ninth with a five run lead…what we witnessed was that .01 time where they dont win
There’s another pitcher that is erratic like Baez but allows less runs. RUDY SEANEZ WITH A COMEBACK!!!!!!!
…I was at the ballpark for the .01% of the time when they FREAKIN’ BLEW IT!!!
And I’m not gonna be framing the FREAKIN’ TICKET either!!!
Anyone know where I can find the father’s day segment from Behind the Pinstripes?
anyone else see Valdez fall on his ass? LOL
Oh look. Twins scoring a single run and us not giving Doc any run support.
9 runs in 3 innings. Yesterday sucked. And even with all the bad baseball they have been playing, that loss hurt the most.
Also, the usher on the steps between 429 and 430 sucked. I couldn’t see half the game because her head was in the way, or she allowed people to stand on the landing and either watch the game, or look for their seats, even though it was the 6th inning, and you should know where your seats are by then.
Halladay really doesn’t look good lately…
35 pitches through 2 innings for Halladay, so much for a complete game.
Griffey and Junior on the Mariners.
This team’s problems makes me want to punch the Phanatic square in the solar plexus.
You should. He has a stranglehold on the Philly mascot seat.
And let’s talk about steroids! Can we talk about steroids?! Can we talk about steroid abuse?! It’s bullshit! It’s ruining the game! It’s ruining it!
Pavano. 3 IP. 29 Pitches. No hitter. Book it. He’s on steroids.
Dammit Farva
Since when did our halladays become Phillies shutout days…goodness gracious
Damn, Sarge Junior doesn’t like his dad enough to wake up and give him a call? That sucks.
Come on TMac. You’re a god damn broadcaster…know the fucking score.
wait Valdez didn’t tie it up Minty?
Oh-ah, Lord-ah, I’m ah-feelin’ the pow-ah! Can I get an A-MEN?
@ Greenman – I mean how bad is that? I actually said to myself, “was someone on base???”
This shitty offense is going to lose two straight games where WILSON VALDEZ hits a bomb.
This offense is fucking depressing when Halladay pitches. Why?
seriously, fuck wink macindale. i also got excited for a second thinking there was a man on base. but then i realized, no, no, i just happened to be paying better attention than the guy calling the game.
did anyone else see that guy eat shit coming down the stairs to his seats behind home plate a couple minutes ago? can we get a clip of that here?
also, what the fuck, roy?
Can we trade for Pavano? That facial hair is awesome. A huge improvement over the assortment of chinstraps and soulpatches we’ve got now.
And back into the slump. Fun fun fun.
You gonna quit again on this team Keegan?
Oh look guys! Doc’s on the mound! He doesn’t NEED offense, so let’s not show up.
We’ll win the game 0 – -1!
well at least we’re takin 2 of 3 from the twins… oh. wait. that’s right. we had a collapse on par with Mets circa 2007 last night. shit.
Bullpen sucked out whatever voodoo swagger this team had.
Eric? is that you? It can’t really be TonyID can it? Not with a nonranting comment that I could actually read without going back on my word or could it?
The bullpen just fucked up this teams mojo and now were right back where we were last week. Comeback win would be great though…? And I don’t give up on the team. I just lament rather hard. State a lot of hyperboles. It happens.
Sucks that the Mets and Braves lose and with Roy MF Halladay on the mound we can’t capitalize.
Roy Halladay is 8-6.
Say it with me. Sing if you must.
ROY HALLADAY IS 8-6.
Fuck 30 wins. It’ll be a miracle if he wins TWENTY.
I blame these horrible WB Mason adds. I mean, they’ve been bad before, but this year, they stepped it up a whole bunch of notches, and the team isn’t performing as well. Tell WB Mason to get out of bed and back in the game. Dick wad.
Speaking of ads, people hate on that T-Mac Superpretzel ad, but know what? I LOVE it.
It helps me remember what an *actual* Phillies home run call sounds like.
I just don’t like that they over dubbed T-Mac.
Nick Punto just cost the Phillies a whole bunch of money in FCC fines.
“I just don’t like that they over dubbed T-Mac.”
But isn’t it very nice to hear “Hit in the air, gone” and not have it be the other team? It’s comforting to me.
Sure wish it could be real and not a fake one in a commercial.
So did we just face the Pavano from the Marlins?
Ok, here comes a fun game! Ready? Here we go!
The Phillies-Twins game ends in a 4-1 score. The pitcher throws a complete game and looks completely dominant doing so.
Which team wins and which pitcher throws the complete game? Your choices are Roy Halladay and Carl Pavano.
ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNND GO!
@tony
Tyler Walker
Looks like Howard wanted to give Werth an opportunity to make the last out today since he had to yesterday…
ALRIGHT! TWINS WIN!
LET’S CELEBRATE BOYS!
What a cot damn embarrassment.
I think each offensive player needs a psychiatrist, and each relief pitcher needs a castration.
Everyone back on the struggle bus!
Roy Halladay sucks right now.
Bitch at me. Do it. I’ll copypasta some stats to prove you wrong.
Go on about lack of run support, I’d LOVE it if you did that! I’ll show you the fact that he didn’t have a 1-2-3 inning all game! He’s falling behind hitters, he’s giving up hits that lead to small ball from the other team.
He’s just not good right now.
Good pitching. Bad offense
Good offense. Bad pitching
You have to settle for one or the other.
>you now realize carl pavano and roy halladay share the same record
…Well shit.
Three games over .500. Thats mediocre. Might be five and a half out of first by days end. This isn’t tuis Phils everyone imagined in spring training. I hope the season doesn’t turn out to be as ultimately disappointing as this month has been. This last 13-10 loss might be an ultimate breaking point though. That was a fucking brutal loss and our team looked depressed today. I’m genuinely worried for the rest of the season, especially after yesterday.
Know what? Fuck you guys and fuck this team.
I’m demanding a trade back to Toronto for Drabek straight up.
Wow, you guys are depressing. I think I’ll go David Carradine myself.
Wow you criticize Charlie Manuel yesterday and then Halladay today? why do you even watch this team?
I should be like Walt Disney and freeze myself till interleague is over.
That one’s in my direction I see.
Halladay has NOT looked sharp. Yeah the run supports been a problem, but he’s seriously been bad lately.
Jimmy’s back on Tuesday!!!!!!!!
With Jimmy coming back it’s gonna be Dane Sardinha getting DFA’ed, but I hope we make a statement and DFA Baez or Dobbs.
Also, “TonyIsRetarded”, if that IS your real name.
Why do I watch this team? Because when they lose an unwinnable game, I shrug. When they want frustrating games like this and yesterday, I get mad. When we win, I celebrate. It seems to be that you’re implying that you can only ever be *happy* with a team and *never* be mad at them for shitting the bed.
You know that your team is really in fucking dire straits, when it’s only run comes off the bat of your THIRD STRING Shortstop, who just hit his 3rd career home run a day after his 2nd career homer, who HADN’T hit any homers since 2004!
Slump broken, huh?
Maybe not, maybe the last 4 days worth of scoring was just a blip on the radar…before seeping back into a slump deeper than the great depression
Well I had fun at the game yesterday.
Chews looked good AFTER the first inning.
Howard cracked a homer.
And my boy DROPPIN GLOADS brought the bat also. Maybe he knew there was one jackass in the park with a t-shirt that said DROPPIN GLOADS and he was inspired.
Also Baez/Dobbs/Amaro – FUCK YOU
@James, I was there, too. I got a couple compliments for my HK blue jacket t shirt. I even got some nice comments at Silk City afterwards, too.
Unfortunately, about 80 percent of the stadium listened to the loss on their radio while stuck in parking lot traffic; most of them left while we were ahead. So let me get this straight, we boo them if they lose and leave early when it looks like they will win by a lot? That makes a lot of sense… It’s not like it was a late weeknight game. The extra innings took us to about 8pm.
I realize we are slumping right now, but I also know for a fact that those guys hear the fans and play off the energy we bring into the stadium with us.
Leaving early is stooping as low as a ny fan. They do that crap all the time. But they only show up in the first place when the team is winning.
