What happened?
The Phillies were swept for the first time this season, falling to 36-28. They lead the NL east by three games.
Who did what?
Joe Blanton gave up four runs in 5.1 innings on nine hits and one walk, while striking out two.
Jimmy Rollins went 3 for 4 with a double (15), a homer (6) and 2 RBIs.
Shane Victorino went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Jayson Werth went 1 for 4 with a homer (12) and 2 RBIs.
John Mayberry Jr. went 2 for 5 with a homer (2) and an RBI.
Greg Dobbs went 1 for 1 with a pinch hit homer (3) and an RBI.
Ryan Madson (2-2) took the loss by giving up one run in one inning. He gave up on hit, one walk and struck out one.
Brad Mills gave up four runs in 3.2 innings. He allowed six hits, four walks and struck out two.
Marco Scutaro went 2 for 3 with a double (20) and two runs.
Vernon Wells went 3 for 6 with a double (16) and two RBIs.
Scott Rolen went 2 for 5 with two doubles (20) and an RBI.
Adam Lind went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Raul Chavez went 2 for 5 with a homer (2) and two RBIs.
Rod Barajas went 1 for 1 with a pinch hit homer (6) and an RBI.
Jason Frasor (5-0) earned the win, allowing no runs on one hit in one-third of an inning.
Jeremy Accardo earned his first save of the season. He allowed one hit and no runs in two-thirds of an inning.
What does this mean?
One of the perks of this gig is that I get to write about the Phillies. There is nothing I like more than recapitulating the ramblings of The Phils, especially when they’re winning. Of course, after a series like this, it’s understandably a difficult thing to do, especially as a fan.
But, the job must be done.
Basically, they shot themselves in the foot this series. They had game one in the bag, and they should have won game three. If not for a couple of brain farts on the hands of their defense, the Phillies probably win this game. If Marco Scutaro doesn’t steal second after he walked, and if John Mayberry hustles to get Scott Rolen’s single-turned-double, then those two runs are probably off the board. Coupled with Pedro Feliz’s double-play ball error in the top of the eighth, then you have the makings for a game that cannot possibly go in your favor.
The offense bailed out the poor pitching and lack of hustle in the field, but it proved to be too little, too late. The Phillies are 1-5 on this home stand, and they are six games under .500 at home. And with the injury to Raul Ibanez, things keep getting worse. *Blech.*
Of course, these are the kind of stretches of bad luck that define a team. Two years ago, Chase Utley missed a month, but the Phils rallied to win the division. Last season, they had to deal with Myers getting sent to the minors and Jimmy’s stint on the disabled list, and we all know how that turned out. With the exception of a slow start in April, the Phillies haven’t had to deal with that much adversity. Despite Jimmy’s struggles and the poor starting pitching, they’ve had a relatively easy go of it this season.
With any luck, today’s loss caused some table-flipping, profanity-spewing, this-hurts-me-more-than-it-hurts-you tough love from Charlie to get them going.
What’s next for our heroes?
The Baltimore Orioles come to town for three games. In game one, Antonio Bastardo (2-1, 5.25) takes on Rich Hill (2-1, 5.81).

It was a terrible series. The only good thing is that we still lead the division by 3 games because the Mets suck.

Or, the Mets still trail the Phillies by 3 games because the Phillies suck.
What a shitty series.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Well, we played the Blue Jays and they played the Orioles. We’ll see depending on how we fair against the Orioles during this next series.

bad series. at least the weather was nice
June 18th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
haha, will.H
These games were loaded with dull, uninspired play. And to correct you, Dash, these assorted flubs weren’t ‘brain farts,’ as you called them, but ‘queefs,’ because that’s what pussies do.
Or should the plural be ‘queeves?’ I just don’t know…

Just a painful series of games to watch, especially considering we PHILS fans, watch the whole thing, because there is always that chance of comeback. Sadly, the Combacks didn’t hold out this time around.
The Team needs to buckle down, and sweep the O’s. It’s a bad team, and one they should sweep, period. No excuses.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Correction: They are not actually 1-5 on this road trip. They are 1-5 on this homestand. We all know they could never be this bad on the road, just like they could never be relatively decent at home. This is ridiculous. Please rip the patches those World Phucking Champs patches off the jerseys. I hate to sound like a douchebag Mets fan fumbling for excuses why they suck, but that was last year. They need to get their heads OUT OF THE CLOUDS, AND INTO THE GAMES!!!!!!!
/end rant

Queeves. I actually laughed out loud at that.

Amen.

@Max Noted, and corrected.

Thank you. What am I here for if not to set records straight and kvetch and crappy play by the Phils?
June 19th, 2009 at 1:22 am
I knew those “World Series Champions” badges were going to be trouble as soon as I saw them. Good call, Max.

anyone else getting worried about the pen? i mean they can’t keep pitching 4 innings every night and expect to keep pitching well.
June 19th, 2009 at 3:04 am
@Jordan, that’s just one thing, on a long list of things I’m worried about with this team. Let’s see.
Excessive Strike-Outs.
The Overworked Bull-Pen.
Inability to close out games.
Injuries to key players.
Lack of Performance from key players.
Lack of production from the Bench.
Starting Pitching.
Losing at home.
The list could go on, but I’m depressed enough.
