June 16 Game Recap: Blue Jays 8, Phillies 3
Posted by Dash Treyhorn at 11:15 pm ET 14 Comments

What happened?

The Phillies blew a ninth inning lead and lost in extras. They move to 10 games above .500 on the season, reducing their lead in the National League east to three games.

Who did what?

Cole Hamels gave up two runs in six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

Jimmy Rollins went 2 for 5 with a double (14) and a run.

Chase Utley went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Jayson Werth went 1 for 5 with a homer (10) and 2 RBIs.

Ryan Madson blew his second save of the season, allowing one run in one inning pitched. He gave up two hits, two walks (one intentional) and struck out two.

Clay Condrey (4-2) took the loss by allowing five runs in the 10th inning. He gave up three hits, two walks.

Ricky Romero pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Scott Rolen went 2 for 4 with two walks, one runs and an RBI.

Adam Lind went 2 for 4 with two walks, two runs and an RBI.

Alex Rios went 2 for 4 with two walks, two runs and an RBI.

Lyle Overbay had two RBIs in two plate appearances.

Rod Barajas went 2 for 5 with a double (13) and 2 RBIs.

What does this mean?

There are tough losses, and there are tough losses. This game was one of them. Despite the fact that the Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez went 1 for 10 with six strikeouts and the Jays seemingly loaded the bases in every inning, it was looking like the Phils were going to pull one out as they headed to the ninth with a one run lead. But Ryan Madson, without giving up a hard hit ball, was unable to close the deal, blowing his first save as the de facto closer.

The frustrating thing about this game was that in the last two innings, the Blue Jays didn’t hit the ball hard, with the notable exception of Rod “Twixt the Wickets” Barajas’ RBI double in the 10th. It seemed like they were just hitting soft choppers or bloop singles all over the field. The Phillies ran into some pretty awful luck in that regard, but that doesn’t change the fact that the offense was only able to score three runs against a pitcher that was ripe for the taking.

Despite the loss, the Phils still maintain a three game lead in the east. However, they have lost three of their last four games. With any luck, this won’t be a repeat of 2008, where they went 12-14 over the month of June.

What’s next for our heroes?

In game two of the series, Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.11) takes on Scott Richmond (4-3, 3.90.)

Does the fact that I saw this coming from the seventh inning on have anything to do with why I didn’t think that this was that tough of a loss?

    Hmm?

Everyday Clay (whom I like) became Bad day vs. Blue Jays Clay and Romero was like a pitching machine when it’s first revved up after a long, cold, wet off season.

I really hope this reality scourge that has hit our BP isn’t the culprit.

Get it together, Phellas. It’s a long season, start now.

  2. bigmyc Says:

Also, was anyone surprised when the Jays got yet another chance in extras and they actually cashed in on it?

I mean, how many times did the Phils load ‘em up and get out unscathed?

  3. bigmyc Says:

    Also to note,

I actually like this reality series concerning the Phil’s Phiremen. I just hope that they don’t spend too much time with that crap. Just sayin’.

  4. PhiPhan5648 Says:

I just hope that we can scavenge out two wins from this first series with the JAYS, and move onto the next couple of games. It’s cool though, the METS may have gained on us tonight, but they did so beating the worst team in the AL. Not to worried about them.

  5. Gaze Says:

Seems like the deadly accurate arms of the first two months have kind of disappeared in June. Back in May, the Howard throw to first would have been a double play ball, the Ibanez throw to J-Roll covering third would have been a bang bang out, and the Jayson Werth cannon to the plate would have gotten there that split second sooner. Those kind of outs saved our asses in April and May and just don’t seem to be falling our way this month.

  6. PhiPhan5648 Says:

    @Gaze: I noticed that too.

  7. gabrielle Says:

i watched the game at work, and everytime i looked up, i felt like the bases were constantly loaded. just so disappointing.

*girly moment* alex rios is effin hot. had to get that out there.

  8. Here Come Da Judge Says:

our bullpen looked like a mets 2007/2008 bullpen last night

  9. Jdashdog Says:

I still like Madson closing. Lidge would’ve given up at least 2 more runs once the bases were juiced.

  10. WB-Tony Says:

    @Here Come Da Judge
If our bullpen keeps throwing all these innings (they’re amongst the tops in the majors) they very well could be.

  11. Capt Murdock Says:

    I hate seeing Cito Gaston!

Its like have a constant loop of Carter’s HR constantly playing in my head except with a stupid face.

  12. yellowbird Says:

on an unrelated note, the guy sitting in the row behind me in 102 was sportin’ a fightins “rauuuuuuuul” shirt.

  13. Boothe Says:

Barajas’ 2 run double was a kick in the teeth to the Phillies.

He had a horrible game up until that moment, so I’m happy that he got that one in.

  14. Mike P Says:

I, for one, am glad that Lidge had a good session on the mound. Hopefully he’s on his way to coming back 100%.
