What happened?
The Phillies won in extra innings for the second straight night to extend their lead in the National League east to four games.
Who did what?
Jamie Moyer gave up three runs in six innings. He allowed eight hits, no walks and struck out three.
Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Chase Utley went 1 for 4 with a double (12), a run and an RBI.
Raul Ibanez went 1 for 5 with a homer (21) and 3 RBIs.
Pedro Feliz went 3 for 4 with 2 runs.
Chris Coste went 2 for 4 with a double (8).
Matt Stairs went 0 for 1 with a game tying RBI.
Scott Eyre (1-1) earned the win by giving up no runs on no hits in one-third of an inning of relief.
Ryan Madson gave up a hit and struck out one to earn his fourth save of the season.
Tim Redding gave up three runs in seven innings. He allowed six hits, no walks and struck out six.
Luis Castillo went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles (6) and 3 runs.
Carlos Beltran went 1 for 3 with a double (19) and 3 RBIs.
Bobby Parnell (2-2) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings.
Ken Takahashi gave up two runs in one-third of an inning. He walked one, struck out one and allowed two hits.
What does this mean?
Remember the movie Groundhog Day? I’m sure the Mets do, because for the second straight night, the Phillies came back from an early hole to tie the game and force extra innings, only to win it on a homer and give Bobby Parnell the loss.
This time ’round, Raul Ibanez had the killing blow, by cutting through the fog with a bomb on a low fastball from Ken Takahashi. Everything else, though, was pretty much the same. The Phillies bullpen kept the Mets off the board and the offense came up with the big hit when they needed it.
It was another solid outing from Jamie Moyer, who has pitched at least six innings in his last five starts, giving up more than three runs just once. The bullpen took care of the rest by not allowing a single baserunner until the bottom of the 10th when Omir Santos led off the inning with a single.
While this lead was big for the Phils because it gives them a four game lead in the division, they (or more appropriately, we) need to realize that it’s only June, and a lot can happen in the remaining three months. However, this win gives the Phillies some much needed momentum as they head back to The Bank to face the Red Sox.
What’s next for our heroes?
The Phillies head back home for some interleague action. They kick things off with a three game set against the Boston Red Sox. In game one, Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.46) sqaures off against Jon Lester (5-5, 5.09),

anyone see the dumbass red sox fans giving big papi a curtain call? what a fucking joke. the dude is batting like .200, it was only his 4th homerun, and it was in the 2nd inning! oh and apparently they’ve given him a curtain call on his 3 previous homers this year. shut the fuck up and sit down you jackasses!!!

Beautiful game… makes scoring these games fun, and worth the while at the end of the season. Hopefully.
On another note, I’m looking forward to the next few series, and can’t help to feel in awe of the scheduling. We have to face the BO-SOX, the YANKS again, the RAYS, and the JAYS. Easily four of the best teams in the league. If we can come out of this next part of the schedule, as well as we did this road trip. Then the PHILS will really have the momentum to potentially take the whole season again.
June 11th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
@PhilPhan5648 The Phils don’t face the Yankees again this season. 3 vs Boston, 3 vs Toronto, 3 vs Baltimore, 3 at Tampa Bay, 3 at Toronto.

Huge win tonight. Being up 4 games in the standings looks a whole lot better than being up 1 with these tough AL teams coming in.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:41 am
Take a quick look at Mets Blog to see how important this game was to them. They’re all but convinced that they will be 6+ games back come all star break!

Raul Ibanez = The Mexican Cannon
June 12th, 2009 at 12:50 am
oops scratch that last post
Raúl Ibáñez = The CUBAN Cannon
thats sounds a helluva alot better
i did my wikipedia homework, and found out that he is NOT mexican lol
June 12th, 2009 at 1:13 am
This is why Ibanez is great….He leaves his Hair, Blood, Shit and Piss all over allegations of steroid use and sends the Mets to the Yankees 4 back.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:29 am
Can the Mets possibly find a few more Latino players to suit up for them?
It even looks like David Wright and Daniel Murphy are getting spray tans to fit in with that crowd.
June 12th, 2009 at 5:07 am
@Dash. Thanks for the correction, I meant to say the ORIOLES.

What was up with Howard after the Ibanez homer (which I think he hit with a 3 wood)?
He did not look at all pleased. Probably still pissed about his at bat, but c’mon, show some love for the RIBanez.
June 12th, 2009 at 8:56 am
I noticed Howard looking a little peeved too. WTF? He just won the game a little love would be in order. Did anyone catch the replay of the Chase/Pelfrey exchange last night? What did Chase say to him?
June 12th, 2009 at 9:03 am
I saw it. I wouldn’t read too far into it though.
At least he gave Raul some dap when he got into the dugout:
June 12th, 2009 at 9:32 am
The camera zoomed right at Ryan Howard after the RAUL home run….WHY U MAD, RYAN?????
June 12th, 2009 at 9:41 am
@Shawn, my sister’s an excellent lip reader, borderline professional. She is pretty sure he said, “Relax man.” Pelfrey was pissed off that Chase was taking too much time to get into the box.
June 12th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Maybe it’s a good thing Ryan gets mad when he doesn’t produce. Better than J-Roll who just puts a towel on his head and giggles after he pops up.
June 12th, 2009 at 10:17 am
@Maria:
Thanks. I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out. Apparently I will not be employeed in the lip reading business any time soon.
June 12th, 2009 at 10:57 am
7-3 on that road trip is great. Bring on Red Sox Nation. This team is on a roll. Anyone caught wearing Boston Red Sox gear at CBP this weekend gets a slap in the face, then a kick in the nuts(if its a female then a punch in the boobs.) WFC

Jerry Manuel seems to think that bunting with the #2 hitter in the early innings against a team that hits a lot of home runs is a good idea. I really, really hope he doesn’t change his mind.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
@ Argive: Yeah, having a 1-0 lead in the first inning is totally a bad thing. What a rotten manager.

The previous post is fantastic, but I can’t read the comments – i think it’s because of the inverted exclamation point in the URL.

@ Gonzo-
You can’t just give away your outs. Small-ball strategies like sacrifice bunting increase the likelihood of scoring one run, but decrease the likelihood of getting a big inning. Mostly, sac bunting is a good idea if the pitcher’s up, or if it’s late in the game and you really need one run. Otherwise, one-run strategies are kind of a bad idea when the other team has hitters like Ibanez.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
If it’s good enuff for late in the game, then it’s good enuff for the 1st inning. Sorry, I disagree with you.

told you the guy was on steroids!….
RAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 12th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I cannot for the life of me understand why people give a shit how players react to things in the dugout. These people have been playing their entire lives, and they all have different ways to deal with a good or bad performance. So I don’t care if Howard frowns when he strikes out, or if Jimmy is all smiles when he pops out, I just care that they’re focused on improving their game.
Yes, Howard needs to improve his plate discipline, but I’ve been wanting that since 2007, and it doesn’t look like it’s on the horizon. The good news is, right now he has the 4th highest wOBA of our starters, so he’s still producing.
Also, Gonzo, the numbers disagree with you. Bunting is generally a bad idea except for a very limited set of circumstances, and it’s universally overused by managers (especially Ron Gardenhire).
June 12th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
The numbers may disagree with me, but the fact that it worked and they scored a run kinda kills your argument.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
I suppose it would if we weren’t looking at a sample size of 1?
June 12th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Phylan, I know I’ve read articles about that before, but I don’t recall where. Do you have a link for me? I’m not disagreeing with you or PhiPhan. I’m just saying you can’t kill the Mets because they had a 1-0 lead after one inning.
I understand the numbers do say it’s better NOT to bunt. But it worked last night. And let’s face it, we wouldn’t be discussing this if T-Mac hadn’t said “why bunt and play for one run when Moyer gives up tons of runs?”.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Gonzo this isn’t like an opinion, or something, this is just a fact. When Cora came to the plate and bunted, there was a runner on second with no outs. The run expectancy of that situation is 1.189 (check the RE table here: http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html ). After he bunted, there was a runner on third with one out; the run expectancy of that scenario is .983. By calling for the bunt, Manuel intentionally REDUCED the amount of runs they could expect to score from that point on until the end of the inning by .206 runs. He was intentionally reducing the probability they would score one run.
Not to mention that due up after Cora, who himself is hitting .286/.385/.390, was Carlos Beltran (.341/.431/.561) and Gary Sheffield (.250/.380/.427). It was a stupid waste of an out; the fact that they ended up scoring a run this particular time has no bearing on that.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Sorry if I sounded overly hostile there, I missed post 31 before I hit submit on mine.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
joe morgan disagrees with your run expectancy shenanigans
June 12th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
No worries Phylan. In fact, let ME apologize. I had it in my mind that Castillo was being bunted from first to second (which is not always a bad idea). Being bunted from second to third is silly. Thanks for the chart.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 12th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Got to wonder about that one. Kendrick pretty much has to be up for long relief, right? We already have Chan Ho Park to “do” that. Why not give Escalona some more big league reps?
June 12th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
oh fuck not KK
June 12th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Yeah i dont get it either.
The Escalona question was raised when Bako was brought up. I dont know what his contract is like but the only guess I have would be the number of options he has left and not wanting to use those up
June 12th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
That could be, but I was under the impression that options was a year-by-year thing; that is, if you send someone down twice, three times, four times, etc. in a year that counts as using up one option, and then the next year counts as another, and so forth, not that you’re using up an option each time you call up and send down someone within the same season. Could be wrong about that though.
June 12th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
From what I remember, in the first 3 years of a guy’s career, you can call him up & down as many times as you want. When the 4th year starts, then there is a set number of times. Forgive me, but i don’t have the answer to that part.
June 12th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Anyone think that they are bringing Kendrick up to showcase him to scouts for teams we might be making a deal with?
June 12th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Yeah I dont know, especially about international signings. I do know I like how Ryan makes up for the last game tho
