What happened?
The Phillies overcame a late deficit to win the second game of the series in late innings.
Who did what?
Cole Hamels gave up four runs in five innings in the no decision. He allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out one.
Chase Utley went 3 for 5 with 2 homers (15), 2 runs and 2 RBIs.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 5 with a run.
Raul Ibanez went 1 for 5 with a run.
Jayson Werth went 1 for 5 with a run.
Pedro Feliz went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Chan Ho Park (2-1) got the win with two shutout innings of relief. He struck out two and allowed three hits.
Ryan Madson earned his save (3) with a perfect eleventh inning.
Mike Pelfrey gave up four runs (two earned) in six plus innings. He allowed six hits, one walk and struck out two. He went 2 for 3 at the dish with a double (1), a run and an RBI.
Luis Castillo went 2 for 6 with an RBI.
Alex Cora went 1 for 5 with an RBI.
David Wright went 3 for 5 with a run.
Omir Santos went 3 for 5 with a run.
Bobby Parnell (2-1) took the loss, giving up one run on one hit. He walked one.
What does this mean?
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have another nominee for the Best Game of 2009.
Despite a rough outing from Cole Hamels where it felt like he threw over 100 pitches in the first three innings, the Phils were able to bounce back with some small ball for a three run seventh to take advantage of the Mets’ bullpen.
With Cole out of the game early, it was up to the bullpen to hold the Mets at bay until the bats could battle back. Taschner, Durbin, Romero, Park and Madson combined to shut the Mets out for the final six innings.
The offense, which was dormant for most of the game, strung together four straight hits, and a pair of RBI groundouts to tie the game in the seventh inning. They would take the lead for good in the top of the 11th, when Chase Utley led off with his second bomb of the game.
It was a great game, to be sure. One of the best of the season so far, which is what we’ve come to expect when the Phils and Mets get together. But there are a couple things that won’t show up in the box score tomorrow, so allow me to highlight them.
-Jimmy Rollins was 0 for 5 on the night in the leadoff spot, but he absolutley SMOKED a few balls, including a would-be double in the top of the 10th that was snagged by Fernando Tatis, who then doubled off Chris Coste. It wasn’t a pretty line, but Rollins hit the ball well and he did plate the tying run in the seventh with a fielders choice groundout.
-Jayson Werth had the biggest play of the night with a spectacular diving catch with two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs and Fernando Martinez on first, David Wright hit a sinking line drive to right center. Werth was able to track it down and abso-effin-lutely laid out to make the grab. If he pulls up and plays it on a hop, the runner is in scoring position. If he misses it, the ball goes to the wall and the Mets win it.
What’s next for our heroes?
In the rubber match of the series, Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.27) takes on Tim Redding (0-2, 6.97).

HUGE win tonight by the Phils. Mike Pelfrey is a big ass-clown. I can’t believe how clutch Utley is – had to have this game, they fought back all night, and Mr. 26 shoves it up the Mets fans’ asses.

Haha, suck it mike pelfrey.

He’s going to get it pretty hard over at the site. That guy is such a doofus. There’s really no better way to describe his big clowny ass.

anyone else hear LA scream “OH SH#*!” when werth made that diving catch? at least that’s what i heard him say.
June 11th, 2009 at 2:30 am
In the top of the 4th, when Pelfrey was being a bitch about Utley apparently stalling too much, Sarge said “he-hell yes” to TMac, when asked if he thinks Utley should back out again.
And the third game of the Opening Series against the Braves is definitely top-game so far. Tough to beat. twitter.com/fuckthemets.

I didn’t hear LA say that on the radio, but I swear I heard T-Mac say on tv “the balls are finding the holes” at least once last night.

Great win! Would have liked to see Madson come in a little earlier but I don’t mind Charlie’s decision to leave Chan Ho in that much.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Also… anyone like T-Mac’s “shagging in the outfield?”

Great game tonight. Anyone else here Schneider’s intro music in the bottom of the 11th? Dude was jamming to Creed. What a joke. F the Mets.
Gotta give some props to Park for sure. Mad Dog looking good in the closer’s role.

Yeah, but I thought that was just an easy and cheezey thing that the PA guy does…you mean, every song that the stadium plays is picked by the batter?….
