What happened?
The Phillies’ offense battled back from an early deficit while the bullpen pitched four no-hit innings en route to the win and a 6-1 start to the homestand. They are 45-38 on the season.
Who did what?
Jamie Moyer (W, 8-6) gave up six runs over five innings in the win. He allowed eight hits, one walk and struck out two.
Jimmy Rollins went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Shane Victorino went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Chase Utley went 2 for 5 with an inside-the-park-homer (20) and an RBI.
Jayson Werth went 2 for 4 with a double (14), a homer (20) and two RBIs.
Pedro Feliz went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Chan Ho Park threw three scoreless innings of relief. He walked one and struck out four.
Brad Lidge walked one and struck out two to earn his 17th save of the season.
Micah Owings (L, 6-9) gave up seven runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss. He allowed eight hits, four walks and struck out one.
Brandon Phillips went 1 for 4 with a homer (14) and two RBIs.
Edwin Encarnacion went 2 for 4 with a homer (2), a triple (1) and 3 RBIs.
What does this mean?
It’s been a strange series for the Phillies, to say the least. In game one, they had 21 hits. In game two, they went 1-12 with RISP in a one-run loss. In game three, they went toe-to-toe with the Reds before winning it with a two out single in the bottom of the ninth. And tonight, Jamie Moyer got knocked around, but the offense bailed him out to give him the W.
Despite being down early, the Phillies battled back to tie it in the fourth, followed up by a four run inning in the fifth to put them ahead for good, courtesy of 12 hits. All eight starters reached base, with four of them having at least two hits.
Jimmy Rollins added two more hits, Chase Utley legged out an inside-the-park homr, Jayson Werth homered for the fourth straight game, and Pedro Feliz’s two hits gave him his 26th multi-hit game of the season, matching his total for 2008.
The bullpen cannot be overlooked, as Chan Ho Park and Brad Lidge combined to shut down the Reds with four innings of no-hit baseball. Park has been especially impressive out of the ‘pen, racking up a 3.57 ERA in 17 games coming into tonight’s game.
And once again, Brad Lidge makes quick work in the ninth inning.
What’s next for our heroes?
In the final series before the All Star break, the Phillies will welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three game series. In game one, Joe Blanton (5-4, 4.69) takes on Zach Duke (8-7, 3.28).
Bonus baseball!
As most of you have heard, Shane Victorino won the fan vote and earned himself a spot on the 2009 All Star Team. Congratulations to Shane, who does more for the Phils than his statistics show.
I’ll be heading down to Philly tomorrow night for a mini-vacation in the City of Brotherly Love, so the recaps might be a tad light for tomorrow and Saturday’s game. Provided that my hotel has wireless internet, that is.
I’ll also be heading to Saturday night’s game with our fearless leader and other fellow bloggers, so come say hello if you see a rowdy bunch of guys in the second deck in right field.

Headed to Philly for a mini-vacation? Where you posting this from???
PEDRO MARTINEZ IS BECOMING A PHIL WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!

One adjustment Dash, you have both Chan-Ho, and Jamie getting the win. Only Jamie got the Win, Chan-Ho got a hold. Other than that, good wrap-up as always.
Look forward to meeting up with you guys at the Heist on Saturday. Should make for a rowdy bunch.

I don’t think anyone wants a former Met in Philly, let alone Pedro Martinez
July 10th, 2009 at 12:46 am
okay, let’s chill out for a minute. A former Met doesn’t mean shit. He’s probably better than Lopez, Moyer and Blanton.
July 10th, 2009 at 12:51 am
Seriously, fuck the D-Backs. They have a 7-0 lead over Florida only to be down 13-7 in the 8th inning. So far, the Marlins have scored 9 runs in the 8th and still only have one out.
July 10th, 2009 at 12:57 am
You’re seriously worried about the Marlins?
There’s a reason Pedro is pitching in the Dominican, he isn’t better than Blanton…. and it isn’t even close.
July 10th, 2009 at 12:59 am
Let’s be a little more open minded
Besides, Pedro didn’t really help the Mets do anything; he always got hurt
Dykstra was a former met too
Blanton has certainly pitched well but a healthy Pedro is definitely an upgrade over Moyer

No one’s worried but it’d be nice to gain some distance from the rest of the division. Tonight could have easily been another game, had the D-backs not been the D-backs.

Blanton and Happ have been our two best starting Pitchers the past month and a half. I’m done worrying about those two. Jamie has somewhat settled down into what he’s known to be. Cole is the guy that really needs to stabilize himself, and be what we know he can be. If Cole settles in, then we really only have one real hole in the rotation, due to Myers being injured.
If we’re going to fill that rotation hole with Pedro, then we had better drop Tyler Walker, and Jack Taschner in a hurry. Pedro isn’t a workhorse anymore, he’s going to give you five or six innings a game, and that’s at best. I really don’t think he’s what we need right now. We aren’t talking about the same Pedro Martinez that won 3 Cy Youngs. Not even close.

@ Phi: True, Blanton has pitched well. I’m just not confident in him in the long run.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:06 am
@PhiPhan:
Taschner is currently gracing those in the Lehigh Valley with his presence. Since the Phillies DFA’d him (and no one wanted him), I’m guessing they have every intention of leaving him there.

@Lynniemac, I missed that one. But I’m incredibly happy he’s not on the roster right now. Escalona might be young, but he’s a lot better than what we’ve seen of the Jack of no trades.

@PhiPhan, I’m with you on being happy he’s not on the roster. Plus, he looks kinda funny in an IronPigs uni.
