What happened?
The Phillies couldn’t complete the sweep against the Cubs, losing for the first time since before the All Star Break.
Who did what?
Jamie Moyer (L, 9-7) gave up five runs (four earned) in five innings. He allowed eight hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Shane Victorino went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Ryan Howard went 1 for 4 with two runs.
Jayson Werth went 2 for 4 with a run.
Greg Dobbs went 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Carlos Zambrano (W, 7-4) went 6.2 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and three walks. He struck out seven.
Ryan Theriot went 3 for 5 with two runs.
Derrek Lee went 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
Aramis Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a double (4) and two RBIs.
Milton Bradley went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Alfonso Soriano went 2 for 5 with a RBI.
Jeff Baker went 1 for 3 with a double (2) and two RBIs.
Kevin Gregg (S, 19) walked and struck out one in 1.1 innings to earn the save.
What does this mean?
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The last time I had to write one of these recaps (you know, where they didn’t win), it was during the second game of the series against the Cincinnati Reds, where the Phils left something like 23 runners on base.
Since that time, the Phillies have not lost a game. Not only that, but it almost feels like they never fell behind, and when they were, they were never out of the game. And it’s fitting, that in the game that ended their winning streak, that for much of the game, the Phillies were still in it. Even after the Cubs put up a four spot in the fourth, and then another three in the seventh, the Phils still battled back. The wouldn’t roll over for the Cubs. They made them play all nine innings. That’s the beauty of this team; they play 27 outs, without fail.
And while this loss wasn’t a particularly good loss, it is still not nearly as painful as it usually is. When the starter only goes five, when the bullpen gets knocked around, and when they leave a ton of runners on base – usually those losses are really hard to swallow. But in the wake of the longest winning streak in well over a decade, today’s game was one of those “Meh, you can’t win them all” situations.
Maybe this loss was for the best. Maybe they needed the starter to falter and for the offense to come up short, so they can gain a perspective on where things where a month ago, where they were struggling to keep their heads above water.
At any rate, the Phillies had a hell of a run, and now it’s time for them to go out and start a new streak.
What’s next for our heroes?
The San Diego Padres come into town for a makeup game, with Cole Hamels (5-5, 4.72) taking on Kevin Correia (6-7, 4.34).

What happened? Jamie Moyers happened.
Also, Lidge is really scaring me.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:23 am
Can we start some kind of campaign for no more Lidge in non-save situations???
Seriously it drives me up a wall, destroys his confidence, puts everyone on edge- and for what??
NO SAVE – NO LIDGE

Leave it to old man Moyer to kill a good win streak. Now let’s focus on getting Doc again.

I am usually against crazy solutions being spouted out for the sake of attention but what if Moyer goes to the pen (and becomes a reality star) Pedro takes the 5th spot and we trade for Halladay without giving up Happ. How confident would everyone be with this rotation:
Halladay RHP
Hamels LHP
Blanton RHP
Happ LHP
Pedro RHP

@Chris
Instead of just having Pedro pitch in the 5th spot, the Phils could have Moyer and Pedro alternate starts, so the old men never get tired.
I’m only halfway kidding.

Hopefully that new streak starts tonight as I eat as many dollar dogs as I can. And in the last two games I’ve been to they’ve scored 10 and 5 runs in the first inning, maybe thats a sign.

Brandon, dont you dare be late for the game.
July 23rd, 2009 at 3:07 pm
am i the only mid 20’s male that doesnt splooge for dollar dogs. you have to miss an inning just to buy 4 awful hot dogs. i remember when the fanatic funzone had dollar hot dogs every night. you could get a beer and 4 hot dogs for under 10 bucks back when beers were 5.75
July 23rd, 2009 at 3:38 pm
@will.H: But those hotdogs at the Phanatic Fun Zone were horrible. They were whimpy little Philly Franks. The Hatfield Dogs at CBP are a hundred times better than the wons they had at the Vet.

@ will.H I absolutely loath Dollar Dog Night. I won’t go anymore. A bunch of idiots getting too drunk that they now have a limit of only one per person. Unless it’s on my partial ticket plan, I won’t go. I’ve been to one in the last 3 years, and that was only because of the partial tickets thing.
July 23rd, 2009 at 5:23 pm
swift you’re right, but the deal was benificial to any budget. I only did it a few times until they realized i wasnt them for kids, even though i act like one.
watrick, i think i have to C plan and it seems we get 3 or 4 per year. The extra games i buy i purposely avoid dollar dog night for the same reasons you do. I dont mind if people get drunk, but theres nothing about a dollar dog that will make me want to miss 2 innings of a perfectly good ball game. bring a wawa hoagie or stop at tony lukes down the road before the game.. but i wont miss the game just so i can tell my broskies i ate 7 dollaaa dooogs yo

The only good thing I’ve ever seen at a dollar dog night was a group of 3-4 guys that would buy about 20 at a time, before there were limits, and they would just throw them out into the crowd in their section. That game was great, actually-besides David Bell hitting for the cycle. Got seats in a row of people that were there with work, and we bought the tickets from a scalper they sold to to get extra beer money. Then they acted like we worked with them, and were sharing their food. But, that was in seats not near the top, where most of the fiasco goes down.
