It’s pretty well documented how much I love Mike Sweeney. From enthusiastic man hugs to just a general love for the game, Mike Sweeney seemed to be loved by every Phillies fan almost immediately. When he first joined the club I knew little about him other than he was a very good player who was hit hard with injury for the past couple years. Through the magic of twitter I ended up asking Mike’s sister @itstaraboo if she could forward some questions to her brother for me and she did without hesitation.

I only asked a few questions, but I think they are all things the Philly fan base would want to know. So take a jump and read it.

“Every good book has a great ending, and I couldn’t dream of a better one than winning a World Championship here in Philly.”

If you’re anything like me, you didn’t actually read Matt Gelb’s recap of last night’s game, you just stared at the picture of Roy Halladay celebrating his first post-season berth in his storied career all day. Well, If you didn’t read it, you missed the greatest goddamned piece of sports journalism ever:

Sweeney took off his pants and scurried around the room. He was caught from behind by closer Brad Lidge, who dumped champagne on his head.

“It burns!” he said

“Oh yeah,” Lidge said, “it burns.”

That isn’t a piece of Chris’ erotic Mike Sweeney fan-fiction, that actually appeared in print. God, I love this team.

Over the last week, we’d count down the number. Eight. A win or two from the Phils, plus a loss or two from the Braves, and it got trimmed down. Four. Another win. Three. Then two.

Eventually, the Magic Number was down to one.

They returned to where it all started: Washington, D.C.

They sent their Ace to the hill to finish the job: Roy Halladay.

The goal was the same as it was on day one: Win the division, play in October.

This question is actually unanswerable, as the broadcast cut away from the dugout in order to show something much less important (a Raúl Ibáñez at-bat) than the Mike Sweeney Hug Parade. But we do have photographic evidence of no less than four hugs after Sweeney’s first homer as a Phillie Sunday afternoon, of (clockwise from top left) Jayson Werth, Jimmy Rollins, bench coach Pete Mackanin and, of course, Domonic Brown.

If you follow myself or Meech on Twitter you probably know about our respective man crushes. His is obviously Domonic Brown and mine of course being Mike Sweeney. Why Mike Sweeney? Well fuck you, that’s why. After the bro-hug heard ’round the world happened you just knew I had to do something like this. Enjoy my terrible video making skills.
