On this day in 1944, Charles Fuqua Manuel, Jr. was born in Northfolk, West Virginia.
To my favorite manager in the history of professional sports — have a happy birthday.

Shame on me for not mentioning anything about it yesterday, but on July 5th, the day after America’s birthday, Sarge Matthews (59) and Tom McCarthy (41) both celebrated theirs. It was quite the day of hijinks in the myphl17 broadcast booth, including this happy birthday popcorn bath courtesy of the Phillie Phanatic.
I’m sure there will be documentation of the rest of foolishness later today, but for now, enjoy this:
Happy belated birthday, gentlemen.
Today, on November 19th, Phillies slugger and 2008 MVP runner-up Ryan Howard celebrates his 29th birthday. To honor this occasion, an assortment of entertainers from the music industry decided to film their own unique happy birthday messages via YouTube. Don’t ask me why, just watch.
First up is the abstract poetic, better known as Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Listen as the Queens native attempts to lure Big Brown to play for his home town squad Metros. Personally, I’m not too fond of this idea:
After the jump, two more videos wishing Howard a happy 29th from Dr. Jason Seaver’s crooner offspring and the Terror Squad’s in-house producer, DJ Khaled…
On Saturday, the broadcasting duo of Gary “Sarge” Matthews and Tom McCarthy both celebrated their respective birthdays. The Sarge turned 58 while TMac hit the big four-oh. Congratulations, gentleman.
On that day, their broadcast booth was raided by the Phillie Phanatic, who was thoughtful enough to bring a cake and confetti. Here is the clip of the celebration, but first, some interesting tid-bits:
- For some unknown reason, the graphic reads: “Tom & Gary: Happy 70th Birthday!” Now neither Sarge nor Tom are even close to seventy years old, and their combined age would be 98. I’d love to know what the hell they meant by this. It’s confusing the shit out of me.
- Watch as the nice lady with the headset gets repeatedly knocked in the corner by the wide derrière of the Phanatic. (around the :50 second mark) Somehow, she doesn’t even look annoyed.
- If you listen closely, Sarge informs the viewing audience that this is his third cake of the day. That’s one helluva birthday celebration.
- Also, the strange dynamic of Sarge & Tom busting each other’s balls continues. This time, Tom basically calls Sarge a cheapskate, implying Gary had nothing to do with the celebration because he wouldn’t shell out the scratch for it. My favorite running joke between the two is how Sarge keeps bringing up the awful haircut joint, SuperCuts, because that’s where Tom gets his haircut.
- That is all. Enjoy.
