Josh Hamilton: A Portrait of Weakness
Posted by How do you spell retard? at 9:49 pm ET 74 Comments

CrackheadDue to the public love for “infected veins to role model for little kids” “rags to riches” stories, pussyboy Josh Hamilton is in the news again. The 2009 Home Run Derby included allusions to the 2008 Home Run Derby, and fuck my asshole, his boring story is hot shit.

For those unaware, Josh did a shitload of drugs, got allegedly clean and then pimped out his Jesus love. The first issue is his drugginess. In my unverified medical opinion, there are two kinds of people that take drugs: 1.) Strong-willed individuals who are curious if drugs can alter their experience, possibly leading to more knowledge, and 2.) Weak individuals who are curious to find out if drugs can help them feel ‘normal’ in a fucked up world. Josh Hamilton is the latter of the two. He is a weak person. He relapsed in 2005, and by the very definition of the word habit, it is likely that he will relapse again.

You, the reader, might be saying “drugs are scary and tough and dehabilitating and addictive”. Yes, that may be true. But you know what, not every drug story reaches rock bottom. Strong-willed individuals know they can decide their own fate. Strong willed individuals, like a shitty psychologist /good philosopher Sigmund Freud can use addictive substances without becoming addicted. Authors, bloggers (I plead the 5th), and people from all walks of life can go ‘cold turkey’ easily. These individuals are never heard from because they don’t make the Rick Reilly’s of the world cream in their pants late at night. For the  most part, people who abuse drugs and cannot come off them are pussies. Pussies like Josh Hamilton.

And in regards to your stupid children. To put it as Joe Morgan would put it, the word is consistency. Don’t vilify Barry Bonds for his drug use, and then glorify Josh “Tyrone Biggums” Hamilton for his drug use. If your stance is “drugs are bad”, then this contradiction is alarming. If your stance is “performance enhancing drugs ruin the game [...] recreational drugs are bad” you are a moron. Stupid parents raising stupid kids to become stupid adults who relay an anti-drug message with no personal research. Fuck you, ignorant parents.

Not to get in a whole religion debate, but this is a secular nation founded by deists. We don’t want to hear about your fucking savior, Josh. Shut the fuck up about the guy in the sandals already. I’m not going to make the Nietzschean claim about reprehensible people at rock bottom “finding Jesus”. Keep your fucking god out of my television, Josh Hamilton.

Fucking pussy. Good luck to Ryan “Black Lava” Howard in the Home Run Derby! Katy Perry after the jump:

    that ass is not bad

  2. His Dudeness says:

Hers is a butt that won’t quit

  3. joe says:

ITA. I don’t get the media’s love for this guy. Plus he had a baby at home while he was getting high. What’s so heroic about that?

  4. HummerX says:

id be more impressed with his story if he had a face tattoo

  5. Jane says:

I think I can maybe possibly see your point — the media shouldn’t be glorifying drug users/addicts. And I’ll admit that the whole religious aspect of things make me cringe a little bit.

However, the tone and wording of this entry is tasteless, tactless, and just downright wrong. Clearly, you’ve never had someone in your life who has struggled with addiction, and you apparently have no idea of what an addict goes through. If everyone could quit cold turkey, don’t you think they would? Also, it’s pretty obvious that you never progressed past 8th grade English, since all you do is curse, use offensive language, and objectify women.

Thanks for reminding me why I go to other Phillies/baseball blogs before coming here.

  6. John says:

Jane, STFU, if u cant get off an addiction its because your not mentally strong enough to tell urself to stop, Howdy S. is saying that J. Hamilton is a pussy, mentally, cuz he has very little will power. I agree with HDYSR on this, first of all DONT FUCKIN DO DRUGS AND YOU WONT HAVE THESE PROBLEMS, and secondly, if ur constantly saying to yourself that you need to stop but you still cant then your a powerless PUSSY

and i dont see you writing for a respectable blog everyday Jane, so HDYSR has alot more experience writing than u do

dont knock my boy Howdy S.

  7. @Jane
“Authors, bloggers (I plead the 5th), and people from all walks of life can go ‘cold turkey’ easily.”

    /trying for subtlety

  8. glassdick says:

    he’ll be back

  9. dlhunter says:

Though this post is out of the blue, I completely agree. I’d actually go further to say that too many people (like “Jane”) give “addicts” a free pass. In the end, any addiction is about self-gratification of one kind or another, so lauding lil’ ol’ Josh for triumphing over what he did to himself while in a position of wealth and youth is, at best silly.

  10. Lynniemac says:

I go to other Phillies/baseball blogs before coming here, too. But in my case, it’s to save the one that makes me laugh the most for last.

  11. Joe says:

Right on Jane,to a degree, and right on to the post in the same capacity as well. As a former”weak willed addict” I can relate to both sides of the argument. The extreme relogiosity that so commonly follows those that are “getting clean” is oftentimes annoying to the outsider, evidence by the tone of this post. Josh Hamilton’s “story” is only in the spotlight because of his so-called star power.Nobody would give a shit about how much of a fuck up he was/is if not for the fact that he is a good ballplayer. At the same time, while I agree with the post that his “savior” should be kept the fuck out of the public part of the equation, this post also shows a great deal of ignorance and lack if compassion about addiction. How the fuck does the author know what Josh or others have gone through? That said, this Blog still rocks, and as for my ambiguity, fuck all of you =) !

  12. Jon says:

Hey Jane, stick to being done with Sergio and let the “professionals” here at thefightins do what they do best, JOKE AROUND. If youve ever read a HDYSR? post before, youd know that this kind of post is his specialty and to be honest this is one of the more tame pieces he’s written in a while. Clearly he knows what its like for addicts, as he hinted at battling addiction himself if you read carefully enough. This post did exactly what it was intended to do, namely point out the hypocrisy of the media while eliciting a few laughs. And since when did cursing make one uneducated? Bottom line: If you cant take a joke, then dont read this site, no one is forcing you to do so. Thefightins fucking rocks, and GO PHILS!

  13. TC says:

I agree. I’m happy the guy beat his addiction, but I’m sick of hearing about it. They fail to mention (as you said) that he wasn’t a father to his kid for all that time and all the other stuff that comes with it. The guy was a loser who cleaned his act up and found god. How about concentrating on putting players on TV who actually do the right thing day in, day out. Oh and the flame tatoos on his arms are retarded.

The same thing always got to me about Ray Lewis. The dude got away with double murder, but somehow he’s a “good guy”. Screw him, he’s a bum.

  14. Shawn says:

Hamilton went from one addiction to another (Jesus).

  15. Harry says:

Okay, I am also tired of the addiction talk, but to say he is a weak person likely to relapse again is just ignorant.

  16. Harry says:

And also, huge LOL if you think drug uvers v. non-drug users is all about will power. Many studies have shown that genetics play the main part in addiction. It’s obvious that you know nothing about drugs, but you probably did stay at a holliday inn last night

  17. Harry says:

“This post did exactly what it was intended to do, namely point out the hypocrisy of the media ”

What hypocrisy? Hamilton was addicted to heroine and out of baseball. He cleaned up his act and made a comeback. Bonds on the other hand used PEDs while playing. You can’t see the difference here?

  18. Jon says:

No one is trying to equate using heroine and PEDs, just questioning how using drugs in general can be portrayed so differently by the media. Last time I checked heroine was a lot more dangerous than “the clear,” yet Hamilton gets a free pass but Bonds is made out to be a monster. Clearly with the new testing Barry, Clems, ARod, etc arent taking these PEDs anymore but still they are scrutinized left and right after cleaning their acts up while Hamilton gets to come back from heroine addiction and its all good? Fuck that noise.

  19. Chris says:

In my opinion all or nothing is the easiest way to go, it’s doing it sporadically and not falling into oblivion which is the true challenge. Like my addiction to Razzles candy and marijuana.

  20. ron says:

    i agree with jane.
i love this site, but the tone of this post is crazy.
plus, what the fuck do we even care about josh hamilton? way to give that douche more juice.

  21. Cn says:

Pretty classless, HDYSR. Really doesn’t even make sense as it has already been pointed out, genetics has been proven to be the number one reason for addiction. No one is commending Josh Hamilton for his drug use, but you need to realize for people WHO are addicted to drugs and doing anything possible to get their hands on them and have hit their lowest point in their life, that they can still have a chance to turn their lives around for the better. Sure, the Josh Hamilton gets too much media attention that can be overly positive arguement is a good one, but Josh Hamilton is a pussy, that hes weak, that he will relapse again, you, HDYSR are a moron. In fact, if I were to have a son and tell him read HDYSPR’s take on Hamilton…. and then give an objective not media biased story on Hamilton…. who do you think is the better person, more caring, classy person? Well my friend, Josh Hamilton would came out way on top. If you want to argue about the media attention that Hamilton gets is positive and all that, thats cool man… just keep your downright stupid idiotic downgrading insults to yourself.

    WFC btw.

  22. meech.one says:

Yeah, I love me some Howdy [nh], but I think he may have gone a little overboard here.

Plus, I’ll be honest with you — I didn’t hear a fucking peep about his drug addiction all week.

  23. Cn says:

And I’m going like some others, and actually a lot of my friends who read this blog (my friend was the one who gave me the heads up before I got home last night about this), start shying away from this blog, atleast for while, so congrats HDYSR…. I expect a rant like that from some dumb drunk Mets fan, not from a Phillies blog I respected a ton.

  24. meech.one says:

Amazingly, this post was actually less controversial than the time he ranted against the Phillies new recycling program.

  25. Great post, HDYSR. Very astute observation. Nice story from Josh Hamilton, but he needs to keep his Jesus to himself.

  26. mcb says:

I’ll actually read this blog MORE thanks to this post.

Hamilton needs to STFU about Jesus.

  27. Chris says:

I really don’t think one post should make people shy away from a site completely that has multiple contributors. I mean if you wanna stage a walk out like you’re protesting a war that is just pretty lame. I mean you guys are all acting like you are from France or something.

  28. Personally, I don’t subscribe to Howdy’s vitriolic rant in this case, but I will say that the media’s collective fellating of Mr. Hamilton during last year’s HRD was a bit much. After every third homer, Berman and Co might as well have said “Hamilton beat that ball like he beat his smack addiction!”

Yes, the guy had a drug problem and he is now clean. Yes, he has rediscovered the ability that made him such a highly touted prospect to begin with. But do we need to talk about that every chance we get just because it’s a feel good story? It should be a cautionary tale, if anything. We should celebrate his accomplishments as a player, but we cannot turn a blind eye to his past.

But honestly, there were about 100 too many stories about this last year. One or two feature stories in SI or ESPN The Magazine will suffice, but I don’t need to read about it every day. I think Hamilton is sick of talking about it, too.

  29. Gaze says:

I’m going to have to back Howdy on this one. Whether or not your genetics predispose you to drug addiction doesn’t change the fact that waking up in the morning and jabbing a needle into your arm is a choice you make and not something that just happens. HDYSR may have gone a bit over the top, but if you haven’t come to expect that out of him then you’re probably reading the wrong blog.

  30. Chris says:

    Rico Brogna…now there’s a true hero’s tale.

  31. Lynniemac says:

I was addicted to heroine, too, but then when I was nine, I stopped wearing the Wonder Woman bracelets.

  32. Beebs says:

While I understand how genetics can predispose people to drug addiction, I don’t get why everyone wants to completely remove free will from the equation. At some point, the man still made the choice to use hard drugs. That was the wrong decision. The way some people here are talking about it, it’s like his buddies Cytosine and Guanine (components of DNA for those of you that didn’t take high school bio) tied him up and forced him to do a bunch of lines.

At some level, everyone is addicted to something. Maybe it’s something harmless, like baseball, or porn. But some people make a shitty decision and end up addicted to hard shit. I’m all for getting drug addicts as much help as possible and supporting them while they’re straightening their act up. But to paint a picture that Hamilton is a saint like the media has is wrong. And to those of you who decide to stop reading the Fightins as some sort of protest to comedy: No one gives a fuck. It’s a fucking joke.

  33. The bigger issue, I think, is how he has been deified by the media. Addictions can be genetic, but that’s besides the point. They’ve essentially turned Hamilton into a role model, when he is anything BUT a role model, and I’m sure he will be the first person to tell us that. He has succeeded in the worst possible way, almost in spite of his own talent.

Meanwhile, Milton Bradley is the worst person in the world because he may or may not be a jerk. Is that fair? No, it’s not. Barry Bonds was the same way. People hated him for most of his career because he was not media-friendly, yet McGwire and Sosa were beloved despite their alleged use of PEDs.

The truth is, people love a good redemption story, and the not so glamorous details are nothing but white noise when the final product can make the masses stand up and cheer. How many of our greats, from any field, have a shady and/or dangerous past that is completely overlooked because of their accomplishments.

  34. Robert says:

Can we forget this and just revel in the glory that is Katy Perry?

  35. Gigi says:

    um, she has cankles.

being a “legs guy,” I must say that I am disappointed.

    Diagnosis: Nice butt, bad legs.

  36. will.H says:

im actually addicted to this blog

  37. meech.one says:

Now THAT is a mighty fine addiction, will.H

  38. D. Whitmore says:

“Right, yeah, the thing about Hamilton is….. that guy is a real althete! He was a number one pick who ended up blowing a tire mentally and AH GEEZE! You hate to see that. Now hes back in the bigs and that buggywhip swing of his can sure generate some power. Hes just a dead red first ball fastball middle in drop the bathead on it kinda guy and OH BOY! what a job he did in that goofy home run derby!”

    /Wheeler’d

  39. Swift aka PhiPhan5648 says:

Am I the only that’s just reading this whole thing, laughing their asses off at how seriously some people take Tard’s posts?

  40. Harry says:

So many stupid people posting in here. No one is saying free will isn’t a part of it. Rather, people are saying the retarded author is wrong for calling Hamilton a weak person after turning his life around for the better. Summary: don’t get mad at Hamilton, get mad at ESPN.

  41. meech.one says:

Harry’s right. It’s the meidja that sees it can get its grubby little paws on an easy rags to riches-type success story and everyone just feels so good for him. And even if I find it annoying that he praises Jesus every other sentence, if that’s what he wants to do when someone shoves a mic in his face it sure ain’t his fault.

Summary: By talking about it, Hdysr?, you are just giving it more play.

Harry, how would you like to be The Fightins’ ombudsman?

  42. Swift aka PhiPhan5648 says:

@meech, please don’t give that guy any power at all. Most of his posts are just garbled statistics that make no sense, and go on and on about how the RBI is the most overrated stat in baseball.

  43. Harry says:

Yea meech, phiphan is probably right. I have a brain that actually works so I probably wouldn’t fit in around here.

  44. AFN says:

Leave religion alone. It is tired of being picked on and treated like shit because of people like you. If someone is happy, be happy for them, and leave it at that.

  45. D. Whitmore says:

harry, you sound like you have been listening to some POD and some other nu metal bullshit. that will have a bad affect on anyone. HDYSR? has taught me alot about the ways of nu metal horseshit

  46. I agree with our fearless leader. What’s the difference if Hamilton is crediting Jesus or a diet of grilled cheese sandwiches? If someone finds a safe haven or some divine inspiration in a third party, then so be it.

I liken it to the controversy surrounding Scientology. Granted, some of their practices are completely effed up, but if someone reads Dianetics and feels better about themselves, so be it. Truthfully, Tom Cruise looks like the happiest guy in the world, so what do we know?

  47. His Dudeness says:

God dammit people! Stop arguing, take this post with a grain of salt, it is a blog after all, and just enjoy the picture of Katy Perry. And for the straight ladies out there, enjoy the pictures of El Pulpo.

  48. If you are looking at Kate Perry’s legs in that picture, I’d like to know what drugs you are addicted to.

  49. Gigi says:

hey rev, different strokes for different folks.

…I’ll leave all the short, fat chicks for you.

  50. Gigi, if Kate Perry is your definition of a short, fat chick, send em my way.

  51. Gigi says:

yes, rev, you’re right – she’s a short fat chick. was it your high IQ that allowed for such an astute inference from what I typed? bottom line, i like legs, hers are not that great due to the cankles, I guess my standards are higher than yours – also, I do not simply adore celebrities because they are so, you seem to have that weakness.

good luck to the NL tonight.

  52. What in the hell is this guy talking about? I made a joke about someone staring at ankles instead of, you know, her ass and incorporated the drug topic which is the basis of the article. Good Lord.

  53. And for the record, my standards are very, very low.

  54. @everyone saying “if his religion makes him happy, what harm does it do to you”

    The Inquisition.
    9/11.
    Baruch Goldstein.
    The Memphis Three’s wrongful imprisonment.
    Et cetera.

The reason for this rant is because after five minutes of watching the Home Run Derby, I hear this transcribe (not verbatim):
Erin Andrews: “Josh, what was the one memory you have from all the attention given to you after last year’s performance?”
Josh Hamilton: “Just sharing the word of God/Jesus Christ with everyone”.

And thanks for all the comments. I truly consider them valuable, especially the negative ones. As a misanthrope and someone who doesn’t trust the majority on any issue, it reassures me when people insult my writing and belief system.
    /not sarcasm

  55. Howdy for the win. Thanks for playing, everyone.

  56. Jordan says:

You can’t seriously compare Josh Hamilton to Al Qaeda or the Inquisition. And I still don’t see how overcoming a serious drug addiction makes him weak or a pussy. Whatever though, some people are just too dumb to even argue with.

  57. His Dudeness says:

Jordan, GFY. Just enjoy the fucking pictures of hot chicks and enjoy people writing about your favorite baseball team. Long live Howdy.

  58. harry says:

    @ gigi – you’re gay. i can’t stop staring at her ass

@his dudeness – stfu, people are entitled to their opinions

  59. will.H says:

61st and still addicted. save me jesus

  60. meech.one says:

Holy shit Tug, UCB is my favorite television show fucking EVAR.

    Spaghetti Jesus rulez.

  61. Tug Haines says:

How about the one where Wu-Tang discovers their HQ? Great show. Remember when Comedy Central wasn’t a Blue Collar Tour clusterfuck?

  62. meech.one says:

Yeah, and after season 3 they ditched the headquarters all together and drove around in that “United Cake Bakers” truck. I’ve also donated over 2,000 ass pennies to the Little Donny Foundation over the last decade.

  63. Tug Haines says:

I appreciate that donation, as I suffer from the exact same affliction as Little Donny.

  64. Kate says:

ITA with Cn. I’ve shied away from this blog, too, for the same reasons.

  65. Green says:

THIS POST ALONE SHOWS WHY THIS IS THE WORST BLOG OUT THERE AND WHY FANS OF THE PHILLIES ARE INBREEDS AND A DOWNRIGHT DISGRACE. FUCK YOURSELF AND PROMPTLY DIE, ALL OF YOU.

  66. B says:

I don’t understand why you have it in for Josh Hamilton. The guy has been open about his failure in life and has bounced back. He is not getting rich because he was once a drug addict, he is getting rich because he can crush a baseball 400 ft with ease. That’s why the story is so hot, people love that you can climb out of the depths of hopelessness. Especially now. I am sure that being addicted to something that is taking over your body, mind, and life is not easy to overcome no matter how mentally strong you are. There are hundreds of thousands of people who are addicted to some kind of drug, don’t you think Hamilton’s story could give a few of them a little bit of hope or caution? Why do you get so offended because the man found God. Millions have found God before him and spoke of it. If he found a light that helped him why can he not share what has helped him to help others? He to has freedom of speech doesn’t he? All you atheists act as if a christian talks about God someone just pissed in your post toasties. Turn the channel, hit the mute button, or blow your brains out if there is no God he won’t mind and we won’t either.

  67. Got a Clue says:

I can understand you not wanting to hear Josh Hamilton’s God story. Few of us have some that kind of a story, and the rest of us find them hard to believe.

But you’re an idiot to propogate myths about addiction just because you’ve got a blog. The “there’s two kinds of drug users” argument is a fallacy of logic, just like “only two things come out of Iowa” (Officer & a Gentleman) and the statement, “only two kinds of people write blogs” (dare me to complete that tought). You know nothing about addiction and might want to read a book before you write about it.

A person who wants Josh Hamilton to fail just because of his religion is a bad person.

  68. Live It Before Preaching It says:

Dude, totally agree with you regarding Hamilton’s redundant to the point of irrelevance act, but you pretty much invalidate most of your post by proselytizing on a subject you obviously have no knowledge of. It’s clear you do not understand addiction, which most people can lay claim to as they have not suffered through one nor worked with those who have. We all carry with us a certain level of ignorance but possess enough self-awareness to check it at the door when we venture into unknown areas. I’d advise you to do the same.

  69. Piter says:

  70. PeterPiper says:

If I met you in real life I would punch you in the face

  71. Jishcar says:

Wow! The one and only thing i gained from this post and all the comments is…WE ALL NEED TO SURRENDER TO JESUS. Yes, Josh Hamilton is HUMAN. And yes, so is everybody else. Josh’s testimony is not fake or stupid!!! Satan attacks EVERYBODY! Josh falls just like the rest of us. The real story is how God took a life destined for death and turned it into something positive. To say God is BS because a human made mistakes…Give that a second thought.
