Toronto To Commemorate Philadelphia’s Misery In Figurine Form

Hey Phillies fans — have you ever wanted the most painful sports moment of your life shrunken down and captured in sculpture-form? If your answer is “yes”, then you might want to head up to Toronto for Sunday’s game against the Rays where the first 10,000 lucky fans get a figurine of a celebratory Joe Carter after he hit the World Series-winning home run off of Mitch Williams in ‘93. Have a look-see at the nauseating collectible:
Ugh. It doesn’t get much more depressing than that. Maybe they can make a special statuette of a 14-year old meech.one weeping into his ‘93 N.L. Champs t-shirt if they have time.
I hope this was made from a lead-based paint that poisons all who touch it. Enjoy it, Blue Jay fans.

I’m holding out for the Chico Ruiz bobblehead doll.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Can someone remind me why Toronto has an MLB franchise again? Are there kids in Toronto who enjoyed glorious childhoods thanks to this home-run, thereby counteracting my misery?
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Bass, are you sure you meant to ask why Washington DC has a franchise? Perhaps you missed the last post.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I think I’m more offended by this post than Steve was of the last … so here’s my Steve impression:
How dare you write about the Blue Jays winning the World Series! It is disgusting that you would cheer for the Blue Jays to win the Wold Series! Even though nowhere in this post do you mention being happy the Blue Jays won or that you were rooting for Joe Carter to hit that home run. This is sickening! You are low-class, Philly thugs! WHHAAAAAA!!!! MY VAGINA HURTS!!!!!!
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
How dare you cheer for Toronto fans to get lead-poisoning from the Joe Carter bobblehead….yadda yadda…..more whining….inaccurate reference…bad sports analogy…menses…thug-comment…

People often ask me, “Why do you blog?” (that’s a lie, by the way)
“It’s because of days like today,” I say.
Thanks, Steven. You unintentionally made this one of the most enjoyable days of the year.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm
People often ask me, “Why do you comment on blogs?” (yeah, it happened once)
“It’s because I’m funnier than my face allows me to be,” I say.
Thanks Meech. This is like therapy.

Well I’m glad I could make your day. Now you going to explain that you don’t root for people to get lead poisoning? I mean, since you claim you don’t root for injuries (yeah you do)?
And my *vagina* hurts? Can you be a little more sexist? You people are such stereotypes of yourselves.
Sorry for using big words. I know you probably don’t quite understand what that means.
September 3rd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Oh, and since you took your thinly veiled racist shot at Elijah Dukes, let me say on his behalf: bite me. What’s he ever done on the field that compares to your Tatum-esque assassin of a 2B? Yeah, he has a criminal record. Based on the poverty he grew up in, he’s beaten the odds just to be *alive* and not incarcerated. You can pick on him if you must, but unless your dad’s in jail for murdering your mom’s crack dealer, I’m not listening to what you have to say.
September 3rd, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Was Elijah Dukes just compared favorably to Chase Utley? Someone needs to link to that picture of Chase holding a puppy, ASAP.
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:03 pm
“Oh, and since you took your thinly veiled racist shot at Elijah Dukes, let me say on his behalf: bite me.”
Thinly veiled racist shot? How is stating the facts (allegedly threatening to kill his wife and impregnating a 17-year-old) racist?
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Steven, come on. Now you’re just being silly. Running around from post-to-post accusing me of taking a “thinly veiled racist shot at Elijah Dukes”. You’re delusional, brah. All I did was remind you (after you called Myers a “wife-beating nut job”) that Elijah did the same thing. So, to recap: you make a dickhead-ish statement, I put you in your place, you call me a racist. YOU’RE INSANE.
And surely you aren’t dumb enough to think I was being anything other than sarcastic with the lead-paint remark. I just don’t believe you are that stupid. I think more people die from Polio than lead paint poison.
Do yourself a favor: stick to blogging about hook slides and petitions to get Jim Bowden fired — you’re doing great over there.
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Come on meech, you know you send death threats to random Canadians. It’s a serious problem and you should have that looked into.
Steven just cried racism AND sexism in the same thread. Check and mate.
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I’ve now been told to drive drunk into a tree. Oh yeah, you Philly fans are a real classy bunch. Terrible sports couldn’t happen to a more deserving city of louts.
PS Joe Blanton sucks. You gave up 2 of your top four prospects for a guy who’s going to give you 200 just-below league average innings. You could have had the same guy in Tim Redding for a lot less.
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
If Elijah Dukes was white, he’d be Josh Hamilton. If you want to do a post about how impressive it is that he’s beaten all the odds to escape poverty and hasn’t done a damn thing in MLB to deserve one iota of the hating that he gets constantly and admit that you fell into the racist trap that any bad thing said about a young black man must be true… then I’ll give you a pass.
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:57 pm
And now you’re losing to the worst team in baseball. Your team has no chance.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Josh Hamilton tried to kill his wife? Damn the media for overlooking this!
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Dukes did not try to kill his wife. That’s a racist lie. I don’t know if you’re a racist, but you just told a racist lie.
The stereotype of Philly sports fans: loud mouthed, racist, sexist, wife-beating, drunk, Santa Claus-booing, injury-cheering jerks.
Skimming these comments: check, check, check, check, check, check, check, and check.
Good job, boys.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Oh and I forgot: LOSERS.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
“I don’t know if you’re a racist, but you just told a racist lie.”
Impeccable logic
P.S. I’m not a Philly fan.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
You really dont see the difference between Elijah Dukes and Josh Hamilton? Maybe you’re a REVERSE racist!
Youre right, its a fat dirty lie that he didnt try to kill his wife… just threatened to kill her AND her kids. What a feel good story the media should get behind.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Yeah, pretty much the media made it up. He sent a dumb, venting text message. He shot his mouth off. Had a big ol’ temper tantrum. Was it good? No. But what do you think are his male role-models like? He grew up in one of the most crime-ridden, poverty-plagued communities in Ameica. His dad is in jail for murdering his mom’s crack dealer. You expect him to be a perfect choir boy?
Did he attempt to kill her? No. Did she even allege that he hit her? Did anything violent at all? No and no. Myers punches his wife in the face in public, and you people defend him. Utley attempts to end a guy’s career, and he’s celebrated as a hero.
Dukes *did* nothing. He texted a terrible thing and said despicable things. He did nothing. It’s only a racist media and public that allows him to be branded an homicidal animal.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:01 pm
“Myers punches his wife in the face in public, and you people defend him.”
No one is defending Myers. We all just wish that would go away.
“Utley attempts to end a guy’s career, and he’s celebrated as a hero.”
Utley isn’t being celebrated as a hero for that. He’s a tough player, he’s a fierce player. You’re making wild accusations when you say that he tried to end someone’s career.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
someone call that Nats, this guy needs to replace these horrible announcers ive been forced to listen to the last two nights, he not only knows more about the team, but he’s crazy/hilarious!
seriously, you watch every game, listen to these announcers and blog about it?
wow, kudos to you.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Sorry if people aren’t willing to give this guy a free pass because he had a lousy upbringing. So did lots of people. He sends a threatening message and a picture of a gun to his wife, and barges into her middle school classroom, having to be banned from the school, and it’s all just the racist media blowing it out of proportion. Chase Utley slides hard into home, no one on the opposing team makes an issue of it, and suddenly he’s attempting to end a guy’s career?
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
It’s true Bob Carpenter is PAINFUL.
Almost as painful as using Matt Stairs as a late-inning defensive replacement? Love that “Good School” Charlie!!
Zigga–Myers was compared to Dukes by meech. Dukes is a kid who came from a horrible situation and beat the odds and basically has never done anything wrong ever. He shot his mouth off and texted a realllllllly dumb thing. Never lifted a hand to her though. Myers punched a woman in the face. You tell me why most people seem to think Dukes is worse. Why would bpeople have a bias that Dukes is *probably* as bad or worse?
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Oh forget all this non-baseball stuff.
YOU PEOPLE ARE GETTING PUNKED BY ROGER BERNADINA AND KORY CASTO!!!
INSTANT KARMA FOR THE BAD NEWS, DIRTY, INJURY-CHEERING, PERENNIALLY MEDIOCRE PHILLIES!!!
Dang, I’m even going to root for the Cowboys against you louts.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Steven, you mentioned Myers first when you said “And where does the wife-beating fit in the scale of things?”
Until that point, neither Myers nor Dukes was mentioned. After you made your comment, meech responded with “Our wife-beating nut job of an ace can strike out your underage woman-beating nut job of a right fielder, fuck-o.”
The only comparison I see appears to be of the athletic persuasion. If it would have been “Our ace can beat women better than your right fielder,” then you’d have a point. But he didn’t say that, so you don’t.
Also, no one is saying that Dukes is worse than Myers. Nor is anyone saying that Dukes is better than Myers. We can all agree that both players found themselves in regrettable situations that they apologized for and have moved on with.
“Dukes is a kid who came from a horrible situation and beat the odds and basically has never done anything wrong ever.”
It’s fantastic that he came from a horrible situation and is flourishing. Really, it is. But don’t sit there and tell us that he “has never done anything wrong ever.”
Time for some facts:
Dukes left his voice message to his wife: “Hey, dawg. It’s on, dawg. You dead, dawg. I ain’t even bulls——-. Your kids too, dawg. It don’t even matter to me who is in the car with you. N—–, all I know is, n—–, when I see your m—–f——- a– riding, dawg, it’s on. As a matter of fact, I’m coming to your m—–f—— house.”
In 2005, Dukes was charged with domestic battery and given probation
Later that year, another woman filed for similar charges against Dukes.
And, correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he also charged with marijuana possession?
It’s great that he has snapped out of an early season slump, but don’t act like he is a perfect citizen. He’s made his fair share of mistakes.

Mets Sweep Brewers and the Phillies lose 2 of 3 to the Nats.
Life is Good,
When do the Sixers start training camp????
September 4th, 2008 at 12:00 am
FP: The Mets are three games up with 22 games left to play? There’s no possible way they could screw this up. Nope, no precedent for that whatsoever.
Steven: This concludes the high point of the Nationals’ season.
