I got some good news and I got some bad news.
The good news? The Phillies are FINALLY bringing back those sweet looking powder blue uniforms that they wore on the road from 1973-1988. Actually, if you wanna get technical, the jersey that Kent Tekulve is wearing in the above picture (with the zipper) was worn from ‘73-’86, while the ‘87-’88 seasons had the button-up top. Being that the newer version of the tops will probably be designed by Majestic, I’m gonna go ahead and assume they’ll have the buttons like the ones in the late 80’s.
The bad news? Unfortunately, they are only scheduled to wear them for one night – in Milwaukee — during one of the Brewers cool little retro weekend promotions.
Brewers.com beat writer Adam McCalvy’s Brew Beat blog has the scoop (via Miller Park Drunk):
1970s Retro Weekend
May 14- 16 vs. PhilliesMay 14: Brewers to wear reproductions of the home 1972-77 uniforms with “BREWERS” in royal blue block letters on the front of the jerseys and the yellow “M” logo on the cap. The Phillies will be wearing light blue uniforms worn on the road throughout most of the 1970s.
I highly suggest the Phillies wear their old school gear in August when they have their annual 70’s retro night at The Bank. (HOT PANTS!) Even though it’s been 20+ years since they’ve worn them*, a nice chunk of the gear sported at the games still has the old maroon & blue colorway, so they might as well take advantage.
HEAR ME, PHILLIES?
After the jump, a couple more pics of Schmitty and Juan Samuel showing off the button-up version.

*Except for those two times in the early 00’s.

I have been saying for years it would be nice to see the Phillies wear those 80’s unis during one of those retro themed nights.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
I just said last night the Phils should break out throwbacks. Hope this idea takes root.

What the opposition will be wearing. Not quite the MB glove logo of the 80s, but it’s not bad.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:21 pm
I love the powder blue unis. I agree, once is not enough.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:21 pm
If they’re going to wear these at all, they better wear them multiple times. It’d be especially great for Jamie Moyer – I bet a couple of retro 70’s nights would have him feeling like he’s only 40 again.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
I love the pictures of Schmitty and Juan Samuel. Those were my two favorites on the team when I was growing up and when I had just discovered my love of baseball. I don’t know if I should feel old that suddenly my youth is considered “retro”. At any rate, love the uniforms.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
If they pull out some throwbacks at home they better invite Steve Fucking Jeltz to The Bank. SFJ.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
im in love with the old school uniforms. if it were up to me, the okey doke 3rd jersey would be the 70-80’s look instead.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
Interesting, the Brewers and Phils wouldn’t have played each other in the 70’s.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
im going against the grain…….im glad its only one night and away from home….they were great back in the 80s, and so was pac man…. lets leave em there

The Phils broke out the powder blues in 2002 in Atlanta and again in 2003 in Baltimore, but it’s nice to see them again.
2002:

January 20th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Shit, I completely forgot about that. Thanks.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
And the Phils wore the 1971 home unis with no name on back during the very last homestand at the Vet.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Jose Mesa was wearing the powder blue when he broke our saves record in Baltimore. Yes, I did drive to Baltimore to watch that. We’ve come a long way.
January 20th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
That Atlanta article said this:
“The beneficiary of the Phillies’ offense was ace Vicente Padilla (11-6), who won his first game since June 24″
We HAVE come a long way…
January 20th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
gonzo, i remember that but i dont think they wore it for the very last game. chase utley double play to end the vet.. (crowd goes awwww)
January 20th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Maybe I’m showing my youth (I was four when Schmidt retired), but I think the powder blues are hideous. Don’t get me wrong, I like the maroon cap/logo, but those jerseys… no.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
Looks like Tyler Walker in that pic to me…
January 20th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
I don’t know how else to say this, but I… I… I have a boner.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
I think Id rather wear a fucking too small tee shirt with one of those old crappy iron ons from the Daily News instead of those rags. Just hope those stooopid hats, the gay Paris policeman hat with piping around it, dont make a come back too..
January 20th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
The Phillies wore their 1971 home throwbacks during the final opening day at the Vet in 2003 against the Pirates
January 20th, 2010 at 9:50 pm
I’d like to see the Phils go with an alternate road jersey, powder blues with their current design scheme instead of gray. Just to see how it would look. Pay him. Pay Joe Blanton hees mahney.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
mike, and the pirates wore those wild yellow uni’s with the ridiculous movie theater usher hats. and i think we got killed
January 20th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
nice
That’s called fashion, Vic Darino
January 20th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
will.H: and Joe Roa pitched.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
why wouldn’t the brewers wear the glove logo mb hat?
one of the all time great designs…
http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/mil/images/y2006/fan_forum/wallpaper_4_1280×1024.jpg
was that just the 80s?
January 20th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
ron, they wore that jersey last year every Sunday (I think). And I’m pretty sure they’re doing the same thing again this year. It ain’t dead, homie.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:50 pm
Damnit to hell Meech, you got my hopes up that they would be using the Powder Blue jerseys on a regular basis again
Ahh well, better for one day than never again.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
I just meant that glove logo vs. powder blues and maroon would have been utterly fucking EPIC. This is almost as good, though.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:47 am
They really need to bring these back, this is my childhood right here!
January 21st, 2010 at 7:57 am
Now all we need to do is bring back Steve Jeltz.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:38 am
i LOVE this look, and I really really wish it would become their sunday game uni instead of that horrible red/blue cap with the star.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:41 am
To this day I have a NASTY wiffle ball pitch that I call my “Kent Tekulve,” sidearm/submarine delivery and all. When I was younger and everyone would imitate certain batting stances or pitchers, Kent Tekulve was alway my goto guy when I was on the mound.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:49 am
Lets see how tight the retro’s will be
You can see MS’ “He’s got two balls on him Tim”. Don’t think Ryan’s debut will be as vivid….
January 21st, 2010 at 9:03 am
+1 for the powder blue unis.
+10 if they rock ‘em with zippers. F-Majestic.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:05 am
best mother f*cking phils uniforms ever
January 21st, 2010 at 10:01 am
haha lynnie said joe roa. and it was about 33 degrees and overcast. did i sit next to you?
January 21st, 2010 at 11:01 am
Damn, I was at opening day that year. That was back when you could go to every Opening Day… It’s the only thing I wish was still the same about this team. Glad it’s not Joe Roa (I think Myers was hurt or something, I mean, why was it Roa, I forget…) anymore on this team.
As for the old uniforms, it’s cute and all that they play to the 30 somethings childhood, but really, I could care less. If they want to do retro night, let’s do real retro night, and let the guys take greenies and wear the 1915 uniforms or something, with those silly old looking gloves. -Timmy Kerchined’
January 21st, 2010 at 11:02 am
We should wear these all the time, they’re so much better than the Greys. Run it like how they do with the home alternates. Road day games.
January 21st, 2010 at 11:55 am
i like the old baseball cards of phillies greats like samuel and dickie thon with holes in there pants. things were so bad in the 80’s they couldn’t even get their mother to patch them!
January 21st, 2010 at 11:55 am
can i get a von hayes? hell ya!
January 21st, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Bring back the Saturday Night Special!! Could you imagine the likes of RH, Utley, J-Roll, Werth, Ibanez, and Doc rocking all maroon uniforms?!? Fucking priceless!!!
They’d look like a maroon nightmare but it would draw a crowd. Guarenteed.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:56 pm
You know, the 1915 uniforms were smart and snazzy. They should break them out the next time the Phils play the St. Louis Browns or the Chicago Chi-Fed Whales of the Federal League. That was a champion uni, after all.
January 21st, 2010 at 1:00 pm
The blue uni’s would so bring out Chase’s eyes, No?! Ladies don’t you agree?
January 21st, 2010 at 1:41 pm
will.H: Not unless you were in my living room, and I think I’d remember that. I couldn’t get out of work that morning, but managed to lie my way into having the afternoon off to at least be able to watch the game at home in peace. I remember thinking that between it being cold and gray and the Phils getting their asses handed to them, it was a pretty fitting last first game.
January 21st, 2010 at 3:17 pm
They need to bring back the “P” on this jersey:
http://www.mitchellandness.com/Products/Philadelphia-Phillies-1925-Road-Jersey__7229-4AF-25PHILL.aspx
January 21st, 2010 at 3:42 pm
I like the old retro unis. If the Phils win that night, then they’ll probably wear the retros again.
January 21st, 2010 at 4:45 pm
We need the powder blue or a black jersey as an alternate for the Phils. Many other teams have a number of official alternate jerseys! Bring back the blue regularly!
January 21st, 2010 at 5:28 pm
im giidy about the start of this baseball season the most anticipated in phillies season!! im going to the bosox game in philly in june and im pumped!! with holliday, hamels, blanton and out hitting this will be THE BEST PHILLIES TEAM EVER!! WE WILL CRUSH THE DAMN YANKEES I CANT WAIT!!!
January 21st, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Let’s leave those dumb looking blue uniforms were they belong, in the vault , If you want retro go 1950 uniform. Whitey Asburn style.
January 22nd, 2010 at 12:50 am
@Flattopper
Yeah the 1950 uni is sooooo much different from the current uniform.
Powder Blue FTW!!!!!
