The Fightins dot com’s Best of 2008
Posted by meech.one at 1:10 pm ET 9 Comments

Prior to leaving my old stomping grounds over at Bugs&Cranks in early May, I had an outrageous idea of starting an all-Phillies website where I could post my ridiculous nonsense at my leisure without hogging up all the space reserved for 30-some writers. But I thought the task might be too daunting for just one person, so I recruited the fine satirical stylings of one Chamomiles Davis (and later Hdysr?), the professional website designing skills of Jesse Pugh (founder & CEO of Bugs&Cranks, inc.), registered a domain name, and PRESTO! The Fightins dot com was born.

Now, a little over 7 months and 500+ posts later, I’d like to think The Fightins ranks right up there as one of the best off-beat Phillies sites on the internet. I may not know the VORP of Chase Utley, or the BAPIP of Brett Myers, but I sure as shit know how to cut video and post screengrabs. And the fact that other people besides myself enjoy it as well makes me one happy blogger.

So, as a service to the incredible readers (specifically commenters), I’ve decided to highlight some of my favorite posts that have been published here since the day The Fightins dot com was born — May 23rd, 2008.

Enjoy. And I mainly focused on the older stuff, so if I missed anything you found particularly amusing, feel free to leave it in the comments section.

And finally,

Thanks again to everyone out there who pointed your browsers in the direction of this site over the past 7 months and change. We here at The Fightins certainly appreciate it.

Happy New Year to all of my fellow World Champions out there.

I love your site. You’ve taken the off-beat comedy stylings that we do over at WSBGM’s to a whole new level and I’m thankful for it. Happy New Year and great blogging!

It has been an honor and a privilege and an honor to write for this fine blog. I like to think that for every Fightins post I’ve written that fell flat on its face, there was at least one or two that earned a chuckle. I consider “Dude. Brah.” my personal best.

I was (and remain) a frequent commenter on Deadspin and The 700 Level when Meech e-mailed me back in the halcyon days of May 2008 and asked if I’d be interested in writing the occasional post for his new Phillies blog. Despite the fact that I’d only learned English five days before, I was eager to contribute in any way I could. I quit my job on the spot (despite having a wife and two children to feed) and jumped enthusiastically into writing for TheFightins.com.

(Which reminds me — uh, Meech, have those checks from Benny The Bum’s cleared yet? PECO is threatening to shut off our electricity again and we’ve been eating hobo chili since November.)

Although it’s more than likely a coincidence that this blog came into existence the very year the Phillies won their first World Series in 28 years, I strongly believe the three of us had a direct influence on everything that happened to the Phillies this season. How else can you explain it? Prudent free agent acquisitions? Clutch performances? Steady leadership in the face of adversity? Pfft. Please.

Happy New Year to our loyal and tolerant readership, but especially to my comrades Meech — our Fearless Leader and mad genius without whom this site would not exist — and Howdy, who in the late Hunter S. Thompson’s words is “one of God’s own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

My New Year’s Resolution is to get my lazy ass back to writing again. Although perhaps it would make things a bit easier if I wrote with my fingers instead. See? That’s the kind of humor that makes me relevant in today’s cynical, fast-paced world!

you guys definitely have the best and funniest blog about philly baseball out there. thanks for the work you guys put in on the site, it sure makes it fun all year reading your stuff since i live in indiana, and i don’t hear much about the phils or baseball in general around here.

  9. How do you spell retard? Says:

    @Chamo
Thanks for [Hunter's] kind words. No bullshit, I was looking for Hunter S. Thompson t-shirts the other day, and the end of that quote was on one I was considering.
I ended up selecting “I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.”

And thanks to Meech for turning a Bugs & Crank commenter with no blog experience, but oodles of Youtube softcore porn channel experience, to a tri-contributor to a once proud, god fearing blog. Every post I make it my mission to embarrass, frighten, and make my fellow contributors reconsider anonymity.
I know have something that I can be proud of to put on my resume (blogger/coozehound/reprobate*).

*thanks to Chamo for giving me a new way to describe myself perfectly

To the readers, look forward to more awesomeness this coming year; to my coworkers, look forward to more gibberish-ladened emails at 4 AM
