According to Jerry Crasnick on the tweets, “Matt Stairs is signing with the San Diego Padres. Hoping to be their LH bat off the bench. Stairs has a minor league deal with a major league invite, but it appears he has a very good chance to make Pads roster.”
Good luck, Matt.

LONG LIVE MATT STAIRS!!!

I was more sad to see Bruntlett leave, at least that guy could catch a baseball and kinda run around a little bit.
But wait, why can’t we keep Cliff Lee?

Sure am going to miss Matt and his 5 home runs. Godspeed, brudda.

In his short career here he provided us with one of the greatest Phillies highlights of all time (probably top 10) and was the beneficiary of the last outta here call by HK. Damn.

Aww man, say it aint so Matt?
I was hoping he’d retire to become a minor league manager for us or something. So now my favorite pot-bellied Baseball player since John Kruk is gonna play for the Padres. Nothing against the Padres of course, it’s just I wanted to see him stay with the Phillies as a coach or something.

Oh, and can we sign Jim Thome back please?
He may not be as effective as Stairs to make Broxton shit his pants, but he’d do just fine for us as a power slugging pinch-hitter!

The bat is a to-scale representation of how low it hangs.
When it’s cold out.
Keep aiming for the moon, Matt.

the man could make you pregnant with one swing of the bat. so long stairsy
January 24th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
You’ll always be a Phillies legend, Matt.
January 24th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Suz, very true. I don’t know of anybody whose Philly tenure was so short and as statistically insignificant as Stairs’ (maybe Marty Bystrom?), but the guy will always be welcome in the City of Brotherly Love.

Forget the statistics Matt Stairs was involved in one of the biggest moments in Phillies history. The man will never have to pay for anything in this fair city.
