I think its usage was partly a kind of "shame" thing to make the players feel like they were being gay. Example: Two guys on a lacrosse team momentarily get distracted trying to catch a butterfly in their lacross nets during practice. Coach yells: "Hey! You two guys cut out the grab ass." It need not even be that gay...My coach use to yell "No grab-ass or horsing around" during our lap runs in football practice. “Grab ass” in gym class and sports practice was always just a catch all term for messing around or goofing off.
