I was checking out my boy Jim Salisbury’s outfielder piece on his “State of the Phillies” series over on CSN Philly this morning so I could absorb the valuable tid-bits of information in order to fully prepare myself for the upcoming 2010 season. It’s a nice, easy read reminding everyone that the Phillies once again have the best OF corps in the majors. Among the good stuff, Sully mentions how Shane Victorino will most likely slide into the 7-hole in the batting order, reiterates how it’s gonna be awfully tough to re-sign Jayson Werth after this season, but then towards the end he gets to my new favorite topic — Domonic Brown.
Salisbury, the hard-working quote gatherer that he is, talked with some scouts about the rapid development of young Mr. Brown and lined them up in an easy-to-read fashion towards the end of his column.
I added a few of my own to spice this piece up a little bit, but you get the idea…
Scouts of who’ve seen Brown extensively have described him this way:
“A future big-league all-star.”
“He’s special.”
“I want his babies.”
“A five-tool player.”
“I done never seen such a skinny mutherfucker hit a goddamn baseball as far as this Demon fella.”
“Not a great athlete trying to play baseball. A baseball player who is a great athlete.”
“You have the wrong number, I’d really appreciate it if you would stop calling.”
“Darryl Strawberry with a head.” (← That one’s real!)
“Darryl Strawberry without the crack addiction.” (← That one’s not.)
Ernie Whitt, who was Brown’s manager at Single-A Clearwater last summer, raves about Brown’s talent, work ethic and character.
“I’d like to be his agent,” Whitt said.
Brown, 22, is a sinewy 6-foot-5, 210-pounder. He passed up a chance to be a football receiver at the University of Miami to sign with the Phillies out of high school in 2006. He runs well, throws well and projects to hit for average and power with a whip-like left-handed swing reminiscent of Strawberry’s.
You had me at “recruited to be a receiver for The U”.
Honestly, the more I hear about Domonic, the more I think he’s going to be the greatest player in the history of professional baseball.

The more I hear, the more it sounds like we’re going to be replacing Jayson Werth with a better version of Jayson Werth. I can live with that.

Fan Appreciation Day is when we play the Mets. God, I love this organization.

Look at that picture…kind of looks like DB is going for the frohawk look…we failed to reach our frohawk quota in this city ever since Freddy Mitchell’s hands stopped being so great, so Domonic would be a breath of fresh air

@Gaze I have to totally disagree. This dude doesn’t even have any facial hair. That’s what it’s all about

I know what sinew is. So does anyone who shoots animals in the woods.

@Jdashdog… You’ve got to cut him a break at first. At 22, I was still struggling to grow a full beard too!

Where in the line-up would he fit in, would he be at the top as a table setter, or would he able to be a big time run producer and fit into the middle of the line-up?

Actually I’m the crack addiction without Darryl Strawberry.

Brown is a beast. This is Baseball America’s take:
“Strengths: Brown is a physical specimen, long, lean and muscular, which earns him physical comparisons to Darryl Strawberry. While he doesn’t have Strawberry’s raw thunder, he has true five-tool ability. His work ethic has allowed him to translate his athletic ability into baseball skills, starting with above-average hitting ability. A free swinger as an amateur, Brown has developed a solid eye at the plate and recognizes pitches well. His buggy-whip swing and growing strength give him plus raw power, and he’s starting to translate it into production. He has the bat speed and strength to drive mistakes and take advantage when he’s ahead in the count. Brown’s other tools grade out as well or better than his bat. He’s a plus runner with an arm that grades out as high as a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale.”
Cannon for an arm too. Interestingly, they think he’ll get a September call-up in 2010. I’d love to see that.
The ideal thing, I think, would be to trade Ibanez at some point and extend Werth, adding Brown to LF when he is ready, but due to Ibanez’s contract and the contract Werth is going to get on the open market, that’s impossible.

Domonic Brown has the potential to be an absolute beast for the Phillies, and i’d be very interested to see if he logs any time into the majors this year. TONS of talent and promise right here, and we all can only hope he lives up to it all. Also i’ll still be watching how Michael Taylor and Kyle Drabek on their new teams, but I think it was definitely VERY IMPORTANT that we kept Brown at least.
