Roy Halladay Is Ruben Amaro’s Obsession
Posted by meech.one at 8:49 am ET 84 Comments

[alternate headline: Who do you want me to trade to make you pitch for me]

It’s starting to look like Ruben Amaro is more interested in acquiring the services of the Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay than he is letting on.  Apparently, Rube wants Halladay bad, but the only way you can be sure of this is if you have knowledge of the Phillies inner workings or happen to be one of his closest advisers.

OR, is you’re a veteran scribe such as Jim Salisbury (who recently switched from the Inquirer to CSNPhilly), you just beat the information out of people.

At least I think that’s how he gets his scoops. Don’t quote me on that though:

One person with knowledge of the Phillies’ inner workings recently described Halladay as general manager Ruben Amaro’s “white whale.’’ People close to the Phils’ GM say he began plotting strategy to get Halladay as far back as the summer of 2008.

Nothing has changed.

Halladay is still Amaro’s obsession, though he will only admit it to his closest advisers.

Ooooh boy! I just hope they get this over with soon, because I’m so looking forward to hearing horrible Halladay/Holiday puns for 3 weeks straight.

  1. Tartan69 Says:

If Amaro really obsesses over Halladay like that and has been chasing him that long, I give him extra kudos for having the testicular fortitude to pass on the deal for him in favor of Cliff Lee last season.

  2. Ryno Lazertooth Says:

    Do the deal, Rube.

  3. Oliver Says:

I second that. I’m also verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry wary of any trade for him that loses us two starters (Happ and Blanton, as that leaves us with a rotation of:
    Halladay
    Lee
    Hamels
    Moyer
??? (I hope to God it’s not Kendrick)

  4. Oliver Says:

And by that, I mean Tartan69’s comment

  5. mplant Says:

Whenever I see the term “White Whale” I think of the Seinfeld episode where the cop with the eye patch was trying to track Newman down for unpaid parking tickets

Anyway, count me in for Rube making this obsession a reality

  6. will.H Says:

Roy? Cliff? Cole? We would have ourselves a regular ol posse, mowin down varmints and shit

  7. Peacock Says:

Who wouldn’t love to have a rotation that starts with Halladay, Lee and Hamels? If this trade can be done then it should be. If that was the rotation last season they would have won the series.

Do it Rube, I dare ya. I double dog dare ya.

  8. Reverend Paul Revere Says:

I heard he killed some of Rube’s crew.

  9. Wrecked Em Says:

Please take grandpa Moyer out of you’re rotation oliver hahahaha

  10. Here Come Da Judge Says:

i haven’t seen hamels’ face too much this offseason. could he be working out?

  11. Peacock Says:

    @HCDJ

Hopefully he is working out the “suck” and will be back to 2008 form and will be the third head of the three headed monster that is HHL.

  12. Tim Says:

Call me Cholly. Some years ago — never mind how long precisely — having little or no money in my purse leftover from my days with Cleveland, and nothing particular to interest me in Florida, I thought I would travel about a little and see the grassy diamond-shaped part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly offseason in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s Mets hats off — then, I account it high time to get to a stadium as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the dugout steps. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the national pastime with me.

  13. Joe D Says:

Ruben is doing this. Man what a splash it would be. I just hope he can fleece Toronto, ala the Mets trade for Santana.

I agree that the back end of the rotation will be pretty horrific but they can find a scrap heaper to be the #4. They only need Moyer to throw until about the AS break when probably his entire body will explode and he will have 45 infections and at that point Drabek will be ready to deal and hopefully will have a sweet moustache and mullet like his pops grown by then.

  14. Amandah Says:

Boooooo! I was robbed by the voters. I am the most deserving candidate.

    Go Mets!

    Go Steelers!

    Go Veggi-burgers!

  15. Tommy Says:

I think this deal is going to have to be bigger than most people are imagining, with multiple players coming from both teams. Amaro will not trade for Halladay and lose Happ & Blanton unless we are getting more than one pitcher back in return. The Blue Jays have some ok back-of-the-rotation types like Scott Richmond that aren’t part of their longterm future, I don’t see how it makes sense for the Phillies unless we are getting more than Halladay in return for our prospects. Amaro isn’t stupid enough to believe that we can get through a season with Moyer and Kendrick as our #4 & #5 starters. If this deal does go down, it is going to be massive. Our top prospects for a #1, a #5 and maybe even a bullpen piece.

  16. PhilsLady626 Says:

hmmm maybe if Cole Hamels pitched better last year we would have won the world series…his shit wasn’t together….

    and i think he’s scarred for life…

I wonder if he’ll pick it up this year and not be a little bitch

  17. Joe D Says:

Tommy, I think getting another starter is when you have to add a 3rd team to the mix but the Blue Jays do have a ton of arms but those arms are also controllable and they like that aspect. I’d take Litsch, Marcum or Richmond but I don’t think they will part with any of them. Amaro is a dirty dirty man. He is doing this people.

  18. Busta Big Gload Says:

I am busting a GLOAD just thinking about a potential rotation like Cole,Roy, and Cliff!

Now if they can get a solid 4 and 5, we got ourselves at least another NLEast title, barring any Mets size collapse.

  19. Phatty Says:

    Happy Halladays everyone.

  20. Busta Big Gload Says:

GLOAD to hear that we may still have a HALLADAY season after all!

By the way, what does everyone think the chances of getting Pedro back are? He’d be a great #4 guy to have, although I don’t know if he’d hold up for a whole season.

  21. Tug Haines Says:

Didn’t Captain Ahab lose his life, his ship and get most of his crew killed in the process while managing not to get Moby Dick?

    Jussayin’.

  22. Joe D Says:

Pedro should pitch just warm weather games. He could be like Larry Walker when he only played on natural grass.

  23. Phylan Says:

By all indications Rube has no interest in Pedro. To be honest, and I’m thrilled with what we got from him, it’s probably a good idea.

  24. Busta Big Gload Says:

I think Pedro could have another good year or two left, but he may be better off playing for a Cali or Florida team, just for the weather considerations.

  25. Leon Black Says:

rube’s got to get in that ass & pull the mother f*cking trigger. Phils win 110 games next year if they get h-day. F*ck J Happ

  26. Busta Big Gload Says:

Yes, but then after next year…?

Even if they can manage to extend Halladay, Lee is still probably going to be gone after next year…and then what will we be left with? Halladay can’t pitch every day, and we still don’t know what other players will have to be moved to land him, so there is an awful lot of ? marks right now.

  27. Joe D Says:

Land Halladay then worry about the back end of the rotation later.

  28. Lynniemac Says:

@Tim: Bravo, sir. That was beautiful. And thanks for reminding me why I hated that book.

@Tug: Yes. And thanks for reminding me why I hated that book.

  29. Phylan Says:

Joe D is exactly right. When you can land one of the best pitchers in the league you don’t worry about 4 and 5, at least not immediately. A cheap signing, plus Moyer, Kendrick, and eventually Drabek and you can fill it.

  30. C.Fry Says:

    Cue Mastodon’s “Blood and Thunder.”

BREAK YOUR BACKS AND CRACK YOUR OARS, MEN! WHITE WHALE, HOLY GRAIL!

  31. eR0CK Says:

    Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas – is Roy Halladay.

    Sincerely,
    Your beloved Phillies fans.

  32. Matt Says:

I just want something to happen soon…I don’t wanna have to hear and read about all these rumors every day for the next month and a half. Get it done or move on. Please.

  33. Philaflava Says:

If you can get Halladay do it. Phillies won’t have this core forever. Win now, rebuild later.

  34. meech.one Says:

Did no one get my Animotion joke in the alternate headline or was it just not funny?

Either way, because it wasn’t acknowledged at all, I’m putting it up here:

Good luck getting that out of your head this weekend.

  35. Lynniemac Says:

I’d have been more impressed had you worked “I Wanna Be a Cowboy” into the Cliff Lee tractor piece.

  36. Sarah Says:

I’m for this trade if lee or halladay can be extended… because if they trade away happ to get halladay and ditch blanton for some extra money, that leaves them with:
    halladay
    lee
    hamels
and two other guys. probably moyer and someone else… but hopefully not kendrick.
    after this season though…
halladay is a free agent. moyer is a free agent. lee has a club option. so from one of the best rotations in baseball (well at least the top 3) to:
    lee
    hamels
    possibly drabek
free agents/other guys from the farm

  37. Phylan Says:

Lee’s club option was this year. He’s a free agent next year. The Phillies have the resources to extend him now, and more than likely will if they don’t acquire Halladay. If they get Halladay, they’ll probably extend him. Not both though.

  38. Smeagol Says:

    We wants it, the precious!

  39. Busta Big Gload Says:

I am terrified of going another 28 or more years without another championship, so something has to be done!

    Dunno what exactly, but something!

  40. Mike P Says:

@Gload Hahahaha Yeahhhhhhh…. I can get on board with that.

  41. Mand(i) Says:

if we can get halladay for a steal ala cliff lee then that’s fine but let’s not make a deal with the devil here. halladay and lee both being free agents next year is not exactly ideal. say rube trades away happ and blanton among others for halladay and he elects kendrick and whoever else to the back end of the rotation. after next year that leaves us with nothing. and all of the big names we have are only signed as of right now through 2011. that’s essentially saying we have one shot to make another championship happen before we start rebuilding. that’s not a good plan.

and if anyone thinks that happ is the reason philly doesn’t have another championship you are very much mistaken.

  42. gfd Says:

There’s no way the Phillies can beat the Yankees. They want Halladay and could have him now. They have the top pick of players the Jays want.
Anthopoulos(GM, JAYS) wants Jesus Montero,Phil Hughes,or Joba.Yankees are smart. They won’t pay for a player, and gut their team of prospects too.Like Boras says it’s too costly for any team to do that.
So be smart Philly and let him go to free agency, you don’t lose prospects that way.

  43. will.H Says:

“There’s no way the Phillies can beat the Yankees. They want Halladay and could have him now. They have the top pick of players the Jays want

interesting insider info or just talkin out your pooper?

“So be smart Philly and let him go to free agency, you don’t lose prospects that way.”

Obviously he’d be a type A free agent, so theres always that draft pick. And if the jays were smart, they wouldnt let halladays value go down any further.. especially if they enter next season with halladay on their roster. whos going to give up anything significant for a 2 month deadline rental. the problem is with the jays, all the offering teams are the ones with the advantage in my mind. If they let Halladay walk into free agency, they get a wee ol’ draft pick for a stud like Roy. Thats just bad baseball.. and its actually how teams stay bad, they get cheap in FA and greedy with proposed trades.

  44. BEN Says:

I don’t think Lee would stay in the NL.The AL has all THE BEST PITCHERS,that’s why they keep winning the All Star Games.
The Cardinals may lose Pujols if they don’t sign Holliday. If he comes on the open market, your’re looking at another close to Alex Rodriguez contract.
The Cardinals win their division, but can’t go any further without better players.Being in the Midwest the fans balk about paying players a lot of money. So they won’t go big on Pujols getting big bucks.

IF PUJOLS LEAVES SO DOES LA RUSSA AND DUNCAN,bank on it!

  45. gfd Says:

    Will H.

-If you give up prospects, and pay for a player it cost your team.So be smart draft picks don’t gut your team.Losing Major league players HURTS YOUR TEAM.!!

Why do you think the Yankees waited for AJ burnett,CC Sabathia, and Tex to go to free Agency? So they didn’t have to trade to get them, and PAY.Yankees choose to keep their prospects (smart) and pick them up in FA.

The Phillies would seem desperate to gut their team for a rental that might not stay after his contract.

Nothing will ruin a team like desperation and foolish impulsive trades that deplete their team.

  46. will.H Says:

ben, if the all star game is a guage for talent and the american league wins by a run or two for maybe 5 years in a row.. maybe they’re only better by a nose.. barely. Im not going to act like the NL is better, but your anology isnt too groundbreaking. its been dangeriously close for years now, not to mention the famous tie.

  47. BEN Says:

    Will
it only takes 1 run MOTE THAN THE OTHER TEAM to win,and the NL has lost 11 straight times not 5.THE AL has been dominate. Wake up!

Even if you beat a team by 20 runs it still counts as 1 win.

  48. will.H Says:

gdf, they wouldnt trade for a guy that they werent willing to resign, they would just have to choose between cliff and roy.. or maybe they’d take a slight discount to win the WS, who knows. I understand how valuable top prospects are.. and i think Ruben knows the same. Thats probably why he hasnt pulled the trigger yet.. the price isnt right.

And i 100% disagree about the phillies being desperate. That argument holds no water, especially when its coming from someone who seems to be a yankees fan. Were the yanks desperate when they broke the bank and signed 3 type A free agents in one season? My man, they spent half a billion dollars to rake in the three best available players in the off season, so im wondering what you call that? The phillies want a stud on the mound to go with their other stud and thats the model for desperation? They would have made the deal and overpaid by now if they were desperate.. get it?

  49. BEN Says:

    Will H

another gauge for talent is the trouncing the NL gets in the inter-league play the he AL always wins the most.

Cliff Lee is from the AL you do know,he and CC Sabathia are former team mates?

  50. will.H Says:

Ben i dont need a lesson in the scoring of the game, that argument is lame. You tried to make a concrete point about the AL having superior pitching because they win the all star game every year. I countered with my point. If you dont see what im trying to say.. ill try again and hope it sticks.. part II.

When you make an absolute statement like: the AL is superior because they win the all star game! and your evidence is a bunch of 1 run games.. it sort of slips doesnt it? If i beat you in a race by 15 seconds, im clearly superior. If i beat you by .002 seconds, sure im better, but damn wasnt that close? superior doesnt come to mind.. superior is designated for a vast void inbetween. 1 run… come on now im rambling, hoping you’ll get it

  51. will.H Says:

Ben, im not sure if you read comments and interpret or just fire from the hip hoping you’ll stagger someone in an argument. I never said the NL is better nor do i think they are. But the argument is always so tired.. AL fans exagerate how much better the AL is than the NL so they can feel better about their own team. Sure we had 90 losses but thats like 65 in the NL.. Oh come oooon we’d be in the pwayoffs!

Im not sure if you’re aware, but the AL is the desired league in the MLB–everyone wants to play there. fat ass pitchers dont have to run the bases. you can plunk guys and never get hit yourself. more fat ass DH’s get to waste the last 5 years of their career ‘just hitting.’ The rules mock real baseball, but hey, its all in fun right?

  52. gfd Says:

    Will H

Yankees are worth a Billion dollars, pay 100-150 million a year in revenue sharing, and luxury tax. This money keeps 8 teams able to keep their doors open.
Last year they had 100million coming off the books from players contracts ending. They Chose to spend on the players they wanted,AND DIDN’T LOSE ANY PROSPECTS DOING IT.

    PHILLIES HAD A PAYROLL OF 88 MM.NOW IT’S 131 MM,AND COULD TOP 140 MM.

Phillies got a good thing going, don’t ruin yout team for 1 player, that’s all I’m saying.

I don’t argue baseball I simply enjoy the game!!

  53. BEN Says:

    Will H

1 RUN WINS THE GAME,doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good game.Phillies don’t beat every team by huge amounts every game.Does that take away from the win,no. 1 RUN WIN THE GAME

As for as the AL choosing NOT to r.
Risk a pitcher being hit by a ball they don’r allow them to bat.different league different rules, deal with it.

  54. BEN Says:

    Will H

However much the Yankees or any team spends is legal, and none of my or your business.
They pay to play, simple!! No baseball rules are broken.

  55. will.H Says:

gfd, the only thing i really disagreed with is the fact that the phillies are desperate. Increasing payroll over 8 years doesnt show desperation. most of the players signed to big contracts were already with the team. they didnt seek out key free agents to boulster their desperate needs. I do agree that trading all the top prospects for possibly 1 year of Roy would be a mistake.. but if the price is right i have to trust my GM.. hes pretty good.

BEN, again, i dont need a lesson in the way games are won. I think you need a lesson in the word ‘degree.’ You’re completely bypassing my point and sticking to ‘yah huh!’ I dont know what else to say.. i never claimed the NL was better than the AL, just that the AL isnt superior (the word superior carries a lot of weight).. especially based on your example with the all star game.

  56. braeden Says:

Hey Rubin, Obsessions get you in trouble, think straight man.Halladay is good but not worth the players to get him.You still a team when he comes.

  57. will.H Says:

“However much the Yankees or any team spends is legal, and none of my or your business.
They pay to play, simple!! No baseball rules are broken.”

ooh, you have template argument i see. Never did I once even suggest the yankees arent within the rules. I barely even touched on the yankees, just used them as an example to desribe what the phillies are trying to do here. It seems you have a rehearsed argument that you bang out every time you get into it with another fan. Im really puzzled.. whered that come from? Somehow i think my guess is spot on.. you spit out rehearsed arguments like this.. it really came out of nowhere.

  58. paul.c Says:

-Hey Ruben obsessions get you in trouble. You still need a team of players when he gets here. The price is too steep man.

-Will H you down the AL,but sure love their players on the team don’t you bwaha,h!!

  59. BEN Says:

    Will H

If I PUT MY NOSE INTO WHAT YOUR EMPLOYER DECIDED TO PAY YOU,somehow I think I would have my nose where it didn’t belong.
You don’t have to rehearse that.I’m always amazed that people have their nose in what a team values their player to play. It’s their business !

AGAIN THE YANKEES IF THEY PAY 1 BILLION YEARLY, IT’S LEGAL!!

Steinbrenner built the Yankee brand internationally,he should reap the benefits of his hard work.

  60. damon Says:

Will H, the American League is dominate dude, they’ve won the ASG for over a decade.Who cares if some of them were by one run,a decade is huge.

  61. will.H Says:

Ben, ive come to realize that you’re a fucking retard. You keep rambling on about the yankees and the legality of their spending. When on earth did i ever question that? You’re not worth the time, i can’t believe i wasted seconds arguing with an awkward fella like yourself. You keep repeating that the yankees are with in the law.. why do i even care? I never even began to bring up that discussion.. that wasnt even close to the topic. You manufactured that shit out of thin air which tells me you’ve argued about that before with someone else two months back and now you want to sound intellectual.

anyone reading this discussion will realize you took a left turn into the woods about 10 miles back.

  62. cameron Says:

THE AL has won the All Star Games for awhile. The fact that it was so close was even more painful.Lincecum gave up the first and it was down hill after that.If the NL had won by one run, nobody would think twice about them winning. by one run,it’s a W.
Give the AL their just due, they beat the NL period.Let’s not be petty.

  63. BEN Says:

    Will H

I WILL NOT TOLERATE PERSONAL ATTACKS OR PROFANITY,THIS IS A SPORT.I HAVEN’T LOWERED MY POST CALLING YOU NAMES OR CURSED YOU. I’LL NOT ENGAGE YOU FURTHER.I can and will debate anyone until it turns nasty, goodbye.

  65. will.H Says:

Ben, that’s because you’re a big sensitive pussy. you and your ADD couldnt stick to a point of view if you got paid to do so. I dont care if people resort to name calling, you were bringing up topics out of nowhere like you were making some sort of bold point. I have no patience for people like you. I’m glad you’ll never come back, we actually like baseball.

  66. gfd Says:

BEN I don’t blame you. When it turns ignorant and personal let them be.You lOve the game and it shows.I never read you declare what your team is.Will jumped the shark ON THAT but ignore his vile vitriol it was uncalled for.

You are right in saying Ruben shouldn’t sale the farm for 1 player. When he gets here what kind of team will he have behind him. Some of the names mlbtraderumors.com cited were stating players.Don’t do it Ruben.

  67. BEN Says:

    gfd

thanks appreciate your candor. This is going to be a great season with or without Halladay. If Hammels and Lidge come back to their former selves. When even Boras says not to trade and pay you know it must be costly.

  68. BEN Says:

    Paul C
I hear you man obsession’s will kill you. This team has back to back pennants they will be fine.RUBEN HAS MADE SMART MOVES,but should be more prudent to not gut the team. The Cards want the Pennant too.

  69. will.H Says:

it was simply a baseball discussion until gump began making little sense. its just a circular discussion with no end.

Im also having a tough time believing gfd and Ben are different people. 20 bucks says you’re the same guy posting under different names because you’re both equally wimpy. you both use awkward capital letters at the wrong time and you dont space after your sentences. you also have the same awkward tone. i’d put money on it

  70. spacecoyote Says:

Does everyone agree BEN is posting under several different usernames?

  71. cameron Says:

    BEN
as much as I would love Doc Halladay,it’s not without caution on breaking up the team as is.
Halladay will cost a lot.Anthopoulos(Gm) is basically asking for major league players to start now.He wants us to restock his holes, for 1 player.

Sorry for the name calling it wasn’t necessary for an opinion. This is a blog after all.

  72. gfd Says:

    will
you are wrong I don’t even know Ben.Now you’re being foolish and paranoid. It seems to me you just need someone to pick on.You are way off base.

  73. gfd Says:

    Cameron
I read that on mlbtraderumors,of what Ruben was offering to the Jays and couldn’t believe he was serious. Hamels had a bad year, but the team needs him to stay.I want Doc as much as the next person, but within reason.Look what the Cards gave up for Holliday, and Boras is really trying to stick it to them,4yrs 16-18 mil, sheesh!

  74. Mike P Says:

    @spacecoyote

Yes, this is clearly the same person posting under several different usernames. They have the same ridiculous grammatical issues (who the heck doesn’t put a space after a comma or a period?), and the same inability to decipher arguments from other posters and produce responses that make any sense.

I really don’t think the All-Star Game is a particularly good measure of the strength of a league anymore. Unfortunately, the game has largely become a joke. The foolish choice to award home-field advantage in the WS based on the ASG hasn’t helped at all. Interleague Play is a better measure, but I have a hard time making sense of that data, too. The NL, for example, did better in Interleague Play in 1997, 1999, 2002, and 2003. Conventional wisdom wouldn’t tell you that the NL was the better league in those years, but there ya go.

The stat that matters most is the WS, and even though this is a difficult way to measure the leagues–after all, you’re testing how the best team in the NL measures against the best of the AL, and you’re missing the opportunity to test the depth of the leagues–it shows relative parity in recent years. Over the past 9 years (since the last win of the Yankees dynasty of the late 90s), the AL has won 5 WS, and the NL has won 4.

But I have to agree with will on one thing. If the next commish isn’t a big pushover, like Mr. Selig, MLB will create a plan for eliminating the DH in the next decade. It’s time for the AL to start playing baseball again, and not the apostate version of the game that they have taken up the past few decades. I get criticized by my baseball buddies for not knowing enough about the AL, but I just can’t help it. The games are mind-numbingly boring. There is no strategy, no rhythm to the game… It’s unwatchable! Let’s face it. A moron could be a great manager in the AL. You just show up at the park every day, hand in the same roster every day, and figure out when the starter is getting gassed so you can bring in bullpen help. The team could almost manage itself. As great of a manager as Joe Torre was in the AL, we have seen him struggle with the intricacies of the NL game with the Dodgers in each of the last two years in the NLCS. He’ll pick it up eventually–as we saw with Cholly–but it’s been interesting to see Joe Torre–considered by many to be the best manager of our time–outmanaged in each of the past two years. END THE DH NOW.

  75. Mike P Says:

Actually, will, I agree with most of what you were saying. But I especially agree with the point about the DH rule, and I haven’t had a good chance to rant about it in a while.

  76. will.H Says:

gfd, like i said before, id put money on it.. you Ben and Ben is you.. youre the same dickhead making an idiot of yourself.. if youre going to talk baseball, cool, i can participate, but if you’re going to act childish and post under different names you can nicely keep your awkward banter to yourself.

    and Mike P,
i know i agree with most of what you said (seems like we agreed on just about everything) but without looking it up im pretty sure the rule was instated back in the late 70s? Im not really a baseball purist, i understand it adds offense to the game which makes it a bit more interesting for casual fans.. but it extends the careers of slobs like david ortiz. itd be like a 5 foot 1 inch guy coming in to shoot foul shots for Shaq.

@will Are we sure that cameron isn’t the same as gfd and BEN, too? I’m thinking we’ve got a troika here.

The DH was installed in 1973. Did you know that the Phils inadvertently torpedoed its use in the NL? Sure, Ruly Carpenter favored it, but hadn’t told Giles about his position. When the GMs voted on it, Giles tried to contact Carpenter to get guidance on how to vote. Carpenter was fishing and couldn’t be reached by phone, so Giles abstained. The Buccos’ GM was instructed to follow the Phils’ lead, so he also abstained, giving the non-DHers the majority. So the lack of cell phones and Ruly Carpenters’ love of fishing essentially kept the NL DH-free.
