R.I.P. Brad Lidge, Phillies Closer (April 6, 2008 – August 25, 2009)
Posted by meech.one at 10:39 pm ET 9 Comments

Bradley Thomas Lidge’s career as a closer for the Philadelphia Phillies came to an abrupt end in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 25, 2009, when rookie centerfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a 2-run homer to dead center field to give the Pirates a 6-4 win. He was just 32 years young and coming off a year in which he lead the Phillies past the Tampa Bay Rays for their first World Series win in 28 years. That magical year of 2008, Brad didn’t blow one save, and wound up going a perfect 48-for-48 when given the opportunity to finish a game with the lead. Unfortunately, 2009 was a different story, and by the end of his closing life, Brad led the major leagues with nine blown saves. NINE.

Brad is survived by that picture of him on his knees after striking out Eric Hinske in Game 5b of the World Series, that crappy bobblehead they gave out last week, and the $23 million the Phillies owe him over the next two years. He will be missed in the ninth inning. Memorial services will be held in the sixth or seventh inning of games when the Phillies need a situational reliever to come in against a right handed batter.

It was a good run, Brad, but we got a title to defend and you can no longer be trusted to close out games.

I was at this game in Pittsburgh and let me be the first to say I was highly disappointed in Phillies fans. The game after Lidge blew the save, he was standing out in right field during batting practice. My buddies and I were letting him have it a little bit and we received some ridiculous comments. “Hey, did you guys boo Mike Schmidt? He was a Hall of Famer.” First, off no, asshole, we did not boo Mike Schmidt because we are 20 fucking years old. And Brad Lidge is no where near a HOF caliber player. Another nerdy looking Phils fan told us that we should not be treating him this way because “he was perfect last year.” He also added, “I wouldn’t trade anything for last year.” Hey, asshole, get your head out of your ass. It’s 2009 you dumb prick. Not only did the Phillies win the World Series last year but you’re now 40 years old. LEAVE THE FUCKING PLASTIC GLOVE AT HOME!!! And Lidge, he’s been as bad if not worse than Jose Mesa in his save-blowing prime. It’s time for fans to move on. Everyone bitches about Hamels because he did the banquet circuits and wasn’t ready to pitch this year (although he pitched well last night). Well, that is a double-standard because Philadelphia fans have yet to move on. IT’S 2009. THIS IS A DIFFERENT TEAM. When we drove out to Pittsburgh, we thought we were going to see the truest of the true Phils fans. Sadly, all we got were those assholes that normally show up to CBP with their StubHub tickets in hand wearing a Phillies World Champions t-shirt.

    Wow!…That was awesome!

    Well said BringBack.

  3. Tug Haines Says:

Hey, I buy tickets at StubHub.

  4. Lynniemac Says:

I do, too. In fact, I think I’ve bought a grand total of one whole ticket through the Phillies since CBP opened.

  5. Cola Classic Says:

    The phillies sell tickets?

  6. Lynniemac Says:

Allegedly. I think they’re only obstructed view and standing room, though.

  7. Nick Says:

Luckily the rest of the division is so bad, you could put anyone out there and still win by 8-10 games.

  8. Dov Reidenberg Says:

    OMG!!!!!

CAN BRAD LIDGE DO ANYTHING RIGHT THIS SEASON?!?!?! I MEAN COME ON PEOPLE… HERE WE HAVE THE BEST CLOSER LAST YEAR W/ 48 SAVES, AND THIS YEAR HE’S HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE!!!!

HELL BRING BACK MITCH WILLIAMS, OR JOSE MESA!!!! THEY MIGHT BE OLD, AND THEIR THROWING ARM MIGHT BE OUT OF GAS, BUT AT LEAST THEY WON’T DO ANY WORSE THAN LIDGE IS DOING!!!!!!

I AGREE WITH THE STORY ABOVE, IT’S A SHAME. I LIVE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA, AND I GO TO EVERY GAME AGAINST THE MARLINS DOWN HERE, AND I SIT RIGHT BEHIND THE PHILLIES BULLPEN WITH ALL OF THE LOYAL PHILLIES PHANS DOWN HERE (YOU CAN GET A SEAT ANYWHERE YOU WANT IN LANDSHARK STADIUM ON GAME DAY, CAUSE OF THE POOR SHOWING OF MARLINS FANS). IT’S BAFFLES THE MIND, WHAT IS HE THINKING WHEN HE IS ON THE MOUND??? COULD IT BE THAT HE’S TELEGRAPHING HIS PITCHES??? I THINK THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO, WHO KNOWS…
