Phillies exercise 2011 club option on Jimmy Rollins
Posted by meech.one at 1:30 pm ET 223 Comments

(Jimmy Rollins… exercise… I got nothing today, folks.)

From a Phillies press release:

Rollins, 31, who signed a five-year, $40 million contract extension on June 13, 2005, is set to make $7.5 million for the 2010 season and with the option picked up by the Phillies will make $8.5 million for the 2011 season.

Fuck yeah, club option.

  1. dlhunter Says:

I spent about 5 minutes just now googling pictures of Jimmy to see if I can find any evidence of gray in his hair. So far, so good, but we’re getting ooooooolllldddd…..

  2. Jdashdog Says:

3 words for you: Un der paid

  3. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

    Fuck yeah, Jimmy!

Now start hitting better again, DAMNIT!

  4. Phylan Says:

Um, why couldn’t we wait until the 2010 offseason to do this? I’m not really understanding why this happened, especially considering his offense fell off a cliff last season. Why wouldn’t you at least see what he does in 2010?

  5. raviny Says:

    @Jdashdog

Not necessarily sure he’s underpaid…perhaps underpaid for what the Phillies get which, apart from some clutch hitting, is heart in the clubhouse. A lot of the camaraderie that Phife said he’d miss can be credited to guys like JRoll. Still, who says he’d play such an integral team-building role elsewhere. Also, he’s not what he was during that MVP year and we have to assume, considering age and the shear number of games he’s played over the last couple years, that 2011 might not be his most productive.

Either way, we are/have been lucky to have this guy.

  6. Joe D Says:

I agree Jdash. Jimmy is as solid as they come. Is an abortion easier to watch when he is struggling at the plate? Sure it is. But you can’t argue with his glove. He is silky smooth with the leather and nothing is finer (than to eat in your diner) than when he is hot and has that swagger. It permeates through the rest of the team.

James Calvin is a sick man.

  7. jessem Says:

I really could not like Jimmy more.

  8. Joe D Says:

I am so saddened by the fact that we did not get to see Jimmy in HK’s shoes.

  9. Jdashdog Says:

    Phylan, why so serious?

You know James is still one of the best shortstops in the game and there are probably 20 other teams that would sign him for the much at this very moment. Yeah his bat SUCKED for 4 months or so but he plays consistently great defense, is one of the franchises core players, and it’s not like SS like this are growing on trees. For his average to be hovering around the mendoza line for that long and for him to be able to bring it up to like .255, that’s pretty impressive. It’s not affecting this year’s payroll so what’s the big deal? He’s not a guy that’s ever been hampered by injuries.

Anyway, look for J-Roll to bat about .294 this year, OPS of about .825, score 100+ runs, and win another GG. All just to spite you.

  10. meech.one Says:

Phylan – it’s $8.5 million, dawg. You can’t get Adam Everett for that kinda scratch.

  11. Phylan Says:

Oh no doubt, he’s more than worth that, and even if his bat continues to be MIA his defense is just about worth that amount of money alone. I’m just saying the point of options are that if Jimmy suffers an injury that significantly reduces his value or means he can’t play short or whatever (he is getting older) you have the OPTION to not pay him $8.5 MM for 2011.

  12. fuck the mets Says:

    Jimmy fuckin’ Rollins…

  13. TC Says:

Was just talking to a dude @ work the other day about J-Roll’s deal. The guy peaked with an MVP in the middle of the deal. WAY underpaid for an MVP of the league then, but is kinda overpaid for the stats he put up at the plate last year. Defense is always there. Smart to exercise the option. Didn’t see who’s available at short in the near future but don’t hear about anyone in the minors ready to plug in.

He did save us from the boredom that was Bobby Abreu… priceless.

  14. Muscles Says:

    Cut Jimmy, Keep LEE!

  15. turtle Says:

    you’re a moron Muscles

  16. Jdashdog Says:

You also have the OPTION to reward him for being the man, whenever you damn well please. Boom.

  17. bigmyc Says:

    OK. Ok.

But if Jimmy’s clubbin’ a mighty Two Fif by in June, it’s time to drop him to 2 hole or better yet, 6th in the lineup.

I forget what he hit in the second half last year, but another prolonged rough start to the season means he’s no longer a lead off hitter.

I did like his contributions in post season, though.

  18. Jimmy Says:

    Jimmy likes money.
    Jimmy like options.
    Jimmy thinks this is great.
Jimmy would like to thank the Phillies.
Jimmy is sad about his receding hairline.
    Jimmy is outta hear -

  19. Mike P Says:

    @Phylan

I agree. I don’t see why they didn’t wait until after next season to exercise the option. There’s no reason to do it a year in advance.

  20. Mike P Says:

I have to say, though, that I watched the walkoff hit against Broxton again today on that happy holidays thing on the Phils’ site, and it was just as exciting the second time around.

  21. bigmyc Says:

So hard to tell from the picture if Jimmy’s one of those guys that makes the absurd attention calling noises when he’s doin’ work in the the gym.

I’d like to think he makes those funny faces like when he gets hit in gut by the Dick’s pitching machine.

  22. Phylan Says:

@JDashdog right, but that’s kind of a dumb reason to be dropping millions a year before you even have to decide whether to pick up the option

  23. Matt Says:

Unless Jimmy’s glove hand falls off and they can’t find a glove big enough to fit his dick so he can keep that gold glove title, they would be picking up his option regardless. It’s a steal, anyway.

  24. Gonzo Says:

It’s going to be a long ass off season on the Fightins if we are picking fights about a 2011 contract for a paltry 8 million bucks.

  25. Phylan Says:

Not saying it’s not a steal, or that it’s too much money, at all. I’m just saying, wait until December 2010 to do it. Wouldn’t make a damned bit of difference except then you’ll be sure he’s living, healthy, and able to play.

  26. Phylan Says:

Oh also, Chan Ho looks to be gone, Scott Eyre was offered a minor league deal.

  27. Eric Says:

Phylan – I think it’s purely a respect thing. You really gonna make Rollins earn that option? Isn’t it much more professional and respectful to just say “here ya go, Jim. Thanks for all you’ve done.”? I get your worry about an injury or some other freak event, but I think you’re (once again) really, really reaching just to find something wrong with something else we did. Again, we’ve had to eat a wasted 8 mil more than once.

  28. BigMiles Says:

Yeah Eric is right. The Phillies are probably looking past 2011 and hoping they can stay on good terms with Jimmy and get another couple years with him at a discount. They want to stay on good terms and show that they believe he is a great player despite his tough 2009.

@Mike P- I said when Jimmy was up to bat that night that if he won the game I would forget about his shitty year. And I did. I can barely even remember him sucking. All I remember is Choochman rounding the bases and Franzke screaming like a 5 year old.

  29. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

Jimmy and co. rallying against Broxton to win that NLCS game was the kind of performance that we wanted to see out of Jimmy all year long, because we KNOW he’s capable of it when focused. JRoll doesn’t need to hit a trillion homers, if he has a good batting average with lot’s of hits. Let’s hope 2010 goes better for him.

  30. Jdashdog Says:

Eric, BigMiles – exactly. First you get the power, then you get the money, then you get the mothafuckin REspect.

  31. Phylan Says:

No doubt, but like, we’re apparently on a tight enough budget to have to unload an ace starter under contract for $8 mil, so why throw money around for sentimental reasons

  32. Eric Says:

Because we need somebody to play SS?

  33. lebowski Says:

while jimmy will probably be worth every penny of that 8.5m in 2011, i would’ve waited to exercise it until next offseason. what happens if he totally tanks it next year?

  34. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

Jimmy is definitely one of the best guys at Short that we have ever had with the Phillies, and I imagine he will be here for some years to come. He’s great defensively, and CAN(and has been in the past) be great offensively, so I think he will do a bit better next season…but that’s just my speculation.

  35. John Says:

    Jimmy is BOSS

  36. Eric Says:

Ah, there it is. We sign our SS to a cheap extension and the comments go to “well what if he tanks it?!” Ah, I love Phillies fans. So rationale and intelligent.

  37. BigMiles Says:

Here’s the real question thought people…Jimmy is the leader of this team so even if he has another shitty offensive season is there anyway they don’t bring him back? Even if he’s injured is there anyway they don’t bring him back? No. (that’s the answer)

  38. Phylan Says:

I really don’t care very much about this, I’m just saying they could’ve picked it up a year later to be on the safe side and protect themselves. If Rollins has another offensive season like 2009 (and by the way I think he will rebound, he suffered in part from a .250ish BABIP last year) and loses a step at SS to age or injury, his value plummets. Again, I think that is unlikely. But if it does happen, the team will have wished they waited another year to pick up the option. Because if Rollins recovers in 2010 as I think he will, it won’t make a damned bit of difference whether his 2011 money was guaranteed this December or next.

I don’t see why THAT is the irrational opinion and not the dudes who are saying we should give him $8 million out of respect or because he’s the “leader.”

  39. lebowski Says:

@ Eric – Get the facts straight before you open your mouth. We didn’t sign him to a new contract or extend him – this option was part of the 5 yr/40m deal he signed previously. If he wins the MVP next year or hits .220, it’s the same $8.5m option. The Phillies had no obligation to exercise it at this time.

The only semi-logical thing I could think of this was a precursor to a contract extension – but I would’ve thought the exercising of the option and the extension would’ve been announced at the same time.

  40. Philaflava Says:

Phils better do right by Werth and sign him this year so we don’t run into any trouble come 2011.

  41. Evan Says:

i agree, J-Dubb NEEDS to get resigned because he could try to follow after any large contract by either Matt Holliday or Jason Bay.

  42. bigmyc Says:

WPC010, Jimmy doesn’t, hasn’t, won’t ever and isn’t needed to hit a trillion ding dongs. Though, maybe your point is that he tries to anyway…

He is a leadoff hitter with gap power and occasional bleacher pop. It’s great when he is stroking the ball with authority, but he is really just needed to get on base at any rate. That is when he does most of his damage; as soon as he gets on base.

  43. Gaze_NJ Says:

The timing of exercising this option is definitely peculiar. It’s a great deal even if Jimmy performs down to his 2009 level, but it’s still strange timing.

  44. Phils Says:

    Oh no!
    Phylan, no Chan Ho?!?!

  45. lebowski Says:

Agree on Werth. I’ve been thinking for awhile now he’d be the guy to trade because I don’t think the Phillies can afford him if he goes to free agency and at this point, they could get a lot for him. With Michael Taylor out of the picture, they can’t move him now, and perhaps, the Taylor move indicates their longterm committment to Werth. Unless they think Dom Brown will be ready next year, but I believe everybody is projecting him for 2012.

  46. Evan Says:

i think management is in a panic and is trying to use this as a cover up for not keeping cliff. once they saw the reaction they said oh no we have to make them believe we had a plan for all this and said we can make it look like we were gonna pick up jrolls option all along. like the move, but not buying this as a planned decision

  47. Phylan Says:

I don’t think the FO is in a panic and I don’t think they do (or should) give a shit about our fan perception of them, if it prevents them from making the moves they need to make.

I would love to wrap up Werth but it’s going to be tough. Dealing Ibanez would help with that but I don’t think anyone’s going to take on that contract. Also with Taylor gone it’s less feasible to be trading away out fielders.

  48. Eric Says:

Lebowski – exercising the option is the same fucking thing as extending him you asshole. I’m fully capable of reading the post and understanding what happened. Speaking generally of it extending him (one more year) is technically true.

  49. dlhunter Says:

Exercising an option in an existent contract does not equal a contract extension.

They are two very separate and very disparate things.

    Eric, you’re an idiot.

  50. Phylan Says:

That’s kind of nitpicking. Exercising an option extends a player’s stay by another year. The difference is it was obviously a pre-negotiated clause in the contract and also contract extensions for good players are typically 3 years or more.

  51. lebowski Says:

    Thank you, DL.

  52. Eric Says:

I truly apologize for not typing “exercising the player option for 2011″ and instead using the term “extended” for the sake of time and laziness. If you guys are going to continue to argue with me purely on technicalities, you’re going to continue to show how poor your logical reasoning skills are, not to mention your lack of baseball knowledge.

But no, continue to explain to me how they are sooo different. We didn’t extend Rollins another year, we just..didn’t not extend it! It’s a compelling argument!

  53. Phils Says:

    Lots of animosity around here!
Eric do you like it this way?
You seem like the instigator in all these threads…

  54. Here Come Da Judge Says:

i don’t think i can picture young james in any other uniform than the red pinstripes

  55. lebowski Says:

Eric, in post 36, you attacked me. It’s still there, go read it.

You are showing your lack of baseball knowledge by not knowing “extended” means entering into a new contract. You said it was due to your laziness, however, you went onto ask what the difference was (see post 52).

“Extending” Jimmy would have meant both sides are showed additional consideration (i.e. Jimmy waiving his right to become a free agent after 2010 and the Phillies agreeing to pay him a stipulated wage).

The option meant both sides already gave the consideration (in the 5 year/$40m contract, with club option). The Phillies derived no benefit from using the option which was granted to them in the contract by exercising it now. A sound business decision would’ve been to wait until they absolutely had to make a decision (after the 2010 season).

  56. lebowski Says:

** Extending Jimmy would have menat both side *have* showed …

    Sorry, typo.

  57. Gonzo Says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcCrn9yQO78

  58. BigMiles Says:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don’t see any possible scenario where we keep Werth past next year, unless he takes a major discount or has an awful year, in which case we may not want him. He will get Bay money, which looks like its going to be about 60 million over 4 years. We don’t have that cash.

  59. Gonzo Says:

+1 to Big Miles. You are a wise man.

  60. Eric Says:

Lebowski, you’re an idiot. Nowhere in post 52 do I ask what the difference is. I was being facetious in asking for you to explain the difference. I’m well fucking aware the difference in a contract extension and exercising an option. That was never the point of any of this. I merely said we “extended” him the extra year, because, as a team-option, it’s their choice whether or not they want to theoretically “extend” him that extra year. Yes, I understand there are buyouts instead, and all of the other shit.

So to reiterate, so there’s no more stupid fucking posts from you.. You claim he might tank it now. This is a fucking ridiculous idea from you. I will now use the language you want me to use. No, it was not stupid for us to “exercise our club option for 2011 at 8.5 million a year” (not extend!) because he’s a fucking major league baseball player and he is the leader of our team.

Seriously, if you’re truly worried that our starting shortstop is going to tank the season 1) stop fucking watching 2) stop posting on Phillies message boards and 3) please just go kill yourself. I get on Phillies fans for being terrible fans, and your argument is truly the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Phylan is worried that somebody might get hurt, that’s a valid argument. To worry that our SS is now going to stop trying is just fucking absurd.

And how do you counter the point? You find a technicality in my wording to attack. Nice work. Instead of trying to justify your nonsense with more nonsense, you just look for any little hole to attack. How do you know your argument really sucked? Phylan even defended me on knowing that I did not intend to think it was actually a contract extension and I was merely saving space. But since I had to now fully explain every little thing to you, I regret ever trying to save time. I now know that the next time I want to insult Lebowski that I have to do it in fucking childs terms because you understand very little.

  61. Phils Says:

    he mad

  62. J Ro Says:

Using an alias while arguing on blogs with other people who use aliases is so very gay.

    J Ro

  63. dlhunter Says:

Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces
While handicapped people make handicapped faces

  64. Gonzo Says:

I remember the day he signed this contract. I was thinking Ed Wade was an idiot because 8 Mil for this guy back in 2005 was WAYYYYY too much money.

  65. Lynniemac Says:

Telling someone to kill themselves over a blog comment is moronic. Merry friggin’ Christmas.

  66. Phylan Says:

Yeah BigMiles is pretty much right about Werth. Unfortunately.

  67. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

bigmyc: I don’t think Jimmy needs a billion homers, since he isn’t that kind of guy. As a leadoff man, he SHOULD be focusing on average, instead of going for the longball, which he seems to have taken a liking to lately, and it’s really not what he’s best at doing. Jimmy needs to HIT and get on base, since that’s what a lead guy is supposed to do. Like I said though, I expect his average to be better this year.

  68. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

Here Come Da Judge: I actually could picture Jimmy signing with the A’s at some point, but it doesn’t mean he’s going to do it. He seems to like being here in Philly, and unless he’s traded or something, I think he’ll stay here for a long time to come.

  69. Phylan Says:

Leadoff guys really only need a high on base percentage and maybe some speed, that’s really all that matters.

  70. Eric Says:

Werth is long, long gone. Somebody is going to give him 15+ mil a year to bat cleanup in a weak lineup. He’s gonna hit 24 and drive in 89 for some mediocre Mariners lineup and not be worth the money.

  71. Phylan Says:

If he keeps putting up an .880 OPS he’ll be worth a decent chunk of change. 36 home runs, too.

  72. Phylan Says:

Also it’s hilarious to me when people try to project RBI because it is entirely dependent on the lineup around you and is one of the more fickle box score stats. OBP and SLG measure actual skills.

  73. Gonzo Says:

Fuck Bill James, we have Phylan!

  74. Phylan Says:

Unlike Bill I cannot rock the tweed jacket/sweater vest combo, unfortunately.

  75. dlhunter Says:

Bill’s got nothing on the outfits Jayson Stark wears when he hits up the leather chaps bars.

  76. bigmyc Says:

Not to be a contrarian (but whatever if I am), but OBP and SLG don’t take into account a hitter’s situational success. Say what you will about RBI as a useful stat, but I’d argue that it is at least as valuable in determining a player’s worth as far as run production from the plate is concerned.

  77. Phylan Says:

Yeah, but the thing is, situational success is never consistent. Over a large enough sample size with runners in scoring position or 2 outs and a runner on third or whatever, a hitter will hit to his normal career line. It’s just that, in a given season, you only get 50 or whatever PAs in that situation and wonky things happen, and people say “oh he’s clutch/unclutch” when it’s just clustering, really.

  78. Gaze_NJ Says:

    “wonky”
I learned a new adjective today!

  79. lebowski Says:

Eric – by tank it, I did not mean he wouldn’t play hard, I was too inferring he could get injured or just not play well due to declining skills.

  80. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

I honestly feel that Jroll has at least a few more very good years in him, and possibly more…but we will have to see what happens this coming season. With the recent offseason trades, a lot of us may be wondering how everything is going to work out with the incoming players, the departures, and if certain players(Hamels,Lidge,Jroll etc.) can step things back up again. Spring Training can’t start soon enough!

  81. maxL Says:

Besides if you want situational success, there’s a bunch of more advanced, more reliable, and more useful statistics on fangrphs, like Win Probability Added, that are more about an individual’s contribution and less about the lineup around him.

  82. BigMiles Says:

I judge situational success by wins…specifically World Series wins. JRoll hasn’t been too shabby in that department recently. Also, Lidge and Hamels’ struggles have totally overshadowed any problems with JRoll at this point. If Jimmy hits .250 and has terrible at bats we can still win the WS if Hamels and Lidge perform. If Jimmy hits .300 and wins another MVP but Hamels and Lidge can’t get it together, we aren’t going anywhere.

  83. lebowski Says:

Jimmy is 31 now and locked up until he’s 33. I don’t think our system has much in the way of SS talent. Maybe the Phillies offer Jimmy a 2 yr/$24m extention (2012, 2013), which would keep him around until he’s 35. He’d need to take a discount since the money is guaranteed so far in advance.

I think the smarter thing would’ve been to negotiate an extension in conjuction with exercising their option for him. Extend him for 2012, probably at about $14m, but it’s not as much of a long-term gamble. Also, by then, our system might produce a SS to step in.

  84. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

BigMiles: I agree that Lidge and Hamel’s struggles are more impactful on the team, but Jroll is going to have to do better than he did in 2009, if he wants to stay as the lead-off hitter. Because if he can’t, they may be better off moving Vic or Polly to lead, and put Jimmy at 7. Guess we’ll have to see what happens!

  85. Eric Says:

Phylan – What I’m saying is, while he’s worth a nice paycheck, I think he’s a product of an obviously strong lineup. I think he has played himself well out of our budget (which is obviously a nice problem to have). The RBI opportunities are limitless and he plays in a small park. He’s as streaky as they come in the league. So I think some weak lineup – say Mariners or Giants – will pay him a ton of money and he won’t be worth nearly as much as they’ll give him.

For no good reason, I compare him to the linebackers that kept leaving the Eagles year after year, only to fail in other systems. Werth has excelled here, with a nice protective lineup and he does not have to play in a huge outfield (not that I think that matters at all). Either way, he’s found the perfect place for his game, and he’s a nice ballplayer. Rightfully so, he should and logically will follow the huge paycheck. He’ll be slotted in as a cleanup hitter somewhere with little protection, and he’ll take his 145 walks but his overall production will dwindle. He won’t approach 30 dingers, he won’t steal 20 bags as a cleanup hitter. This is all how I wildly envision that situation unfolding.

  86. Mike P Says:

The only thing I know is that the 2011 offseason is going to be insane.

  87. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

Honestly, i’m really not looking forward to what happens after the 2011 season…but I hope everything works out okay.

  88. Jon Says:

Is Dom Brown still going to be too raw to be a viable contributor in 2011 when Werth is gone?

  89. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

Brown may be ready in 2011, but I wouldn’t count on Werth being gone just yet. He seems to like being here, and I think he’d probably agree to a deal below market value…but again, it all really depends on how the next 2 seasons play out.

  90. dlhunter Says:

It’s gonna be a huge dropoff from now till 2011 and thereafter. Suddenly, our lineup will be too old to perform and too expensive for us to afford anyway. Suddenly our opening day starter will be Robert Person Jr. and our cleanup hitter will be Rico Brogna’s cousin.

    ….

So let’s enjoy right now, eh?

  91. Phylan Says:

I wouldn’t think Domonic would be ready before the 2012 season, as of right now.

  92. greenman! Says:

Assface Halladay better be this good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PvazkGoLfM

  93. Phylan Says:

    He’s better

  94. DPW Says:

I totally agree with dlhunter on the notion that we must enjoy this era of Phillies baseball while it lasts. And what’s with all the recent animosity in the threads? Sheesh, it feels like there be an angry troll within our camp!

  95. BigMiles Says:

DPW- It’s the Lee trade. It has everyone’s panties in a bunch. Plus, when there is no baseball to watch some among us like to start lighting fires around here and watch people try to blow them out.

  96. maria Says:

The end of this thread is depressing me. I really don’t want to think about the team after 3 years.

  97. Lynniemac Says:

This team won’t be around in 3 years. Dutch Daulton told me so.

  98. Phylan Says:

The only people under contract for 2012 are Utley, Halladay, Lidge (haha), Hamels (who will be in his final year of arbitration), Polanco, Kendrick (2nd year of arb), Ruiz (3rd year of arb), and Francisco (2nd year of arb). In 2013, Ruiz, Hamels, and Lidge come off that list. Should be an interesting period for the Phillies. Dom Brown will probably be coming into his own, but who knows what else in the system will have matured sufficiently.

  99. Phylan Says:

They’d better keep giving Utley what it takes to keep him here until he retires or I’ll be pissed. He’s under contract through 2013 so that shouldn’t be too hard.

  100. maria Says:

Utley needs to retire a Phillie.

  101. Phylan Says:

Oh and 2014 the following players are under contract: Halladay (team option). Rube has some challenges ahead of him.

  102. dlhunter Says:

It is kinda odd that the entire team is essentially peaking at the same time. With some exceptions at the extremes (Hamels and Ibanez), the whole team is around 30 and the their contracts all expire in the same period of time. Win now-ish.

  103. WorldPhuckingChampions010 Says:

dllhunter: If Amaro looked at it the same way that you do, we’d still have Lee here for at least one more year. But apparently, he believes the team is capable of staying competitive for a long time to come. Personally, i’m just gonna wait and see how the future plays out…but I do think the Phillies should be able to prevent another dark ages period…or so I hope.

  104. bigmyc Says:

Uh, yeah. Kinda why it would’ve been nice to save a few more Phuture Phils. I mean, why not send Clifford to Toronto instead of sending Taylor and Drabek or Drabek and D’Arnaud or ….?

I guess Rube didn’t wanna do him like that. Seattle is, at least, competitive. I really, really liked the idea of the ONE, TWO punch of Taylor and Brown in the OF in a coupla years. Of course in the meantime, I also like the idea of Our Boy Roy baffling the N.L. Eastern teams too.

  105. Phylan Says:

Toronto doesn’t want Cliff, they’re rebuilding. They wouldn’t trade one ace pitcher they won’t be able to extend for another.

  106. Gonzo Says:

These pretzels are making me thirsty.

  107. Tug Haines Says:

I want to see Roy vs. Johan this year. Hopefully the Mets will have a little more bite this year.

  108. Phylan Says:

Rivalries are great but I’d be cool if the Mets completely suck again

  109. Lynniemac Says:

Wonder what the mood in Flushing was the day the Phillies acquired Doc?

  110. Tug Haines Says:

There’s something to be said for them sucking, but I missed that edge during the matchups towards the end of the season.

And Lynnie, Mets bloggers blew up Twitter when the Phils got Roy. So next time Mets trolls invade (and they will) with that bullshit about how “they don’t understand why Phillies fans obsess over the Mets while Mets fans are only concerned with winning” we can all tell them to blow it out their collective ass.

  111. dlhunter Says:

“we can all tell them to blow it out their collective ass.”

    tug, your mean likes this:

    http://www.freshstation.org/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=252&g2_serialNumber=1

  112. Phylan Says:

Yeah there were Mets fans on Twitter bitching about how the Mets haven’t done anything and they’re going to not watch baseball and bla bla bla it was awesome

  113. Tug Haines Says:

    dlhunter, you are a fuckface…

    …brb, fapping

  114. Lynniemac Says:

Tug, I had briefly considered visiting the Metsosphere at the time, but was too lazy. I knew someone else would know.

dl, throw the nightmare fuel tag on shit like that. Or the NSFHWE tag (Not Safe For Humans With Eyes). You owe me: 462 gallons of mental bleach.

  115. dlhunter Says:

    “tug, your mean likes this”

I was so disturbed by what I was posting that my grammar just disintegrated.

  116. Tug Haines Says:

    Tubgirl will do that.

  117. Tug Haines Says:

Here, watch this, it will reverse the effects: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=414TmP12WAU

  118. dlhunter Says:

or was it tug girl? i forget…

  119. Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-dro's soul glo hates Bradley mothafuckin Lights On Lidge Says:

@dlhunter, thanks for waking me up.

  120. Roy's beard Says:

time for a change in my name

  121. Tug Haines Says:

haha, I prefer my OJ with pulp, but that’s a little too pulpy for me, dl.

  122. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

that’s right, everyone BETTER FUCKING GROW BEARDS NOW

  123. Phylan Says:

@tug jesus I love that video

we’ll listen to zeppelin and eat cheddar cheese

  124. Tug Haines Says:

@Phylan that gets me and also “Watch me eat 450 fuckinhardboiledeggs”

  125. Eric Says:

    @ LynnieMac: http://nyc.barstoolsports.com/random-thoughts/phillies-and-blue-jays-agree-in-principal-to-three-way-deal-sending-halladay-to-philadelphia/

  126. Evan Says:

just throwing it out there, but i think chase should indeed grow a large beard. he needs one

  127. maria Says:

@Eric, thanks for posting that. My favorite comment by far was this little gem:

“i like how the mariners, blue jays, and phillies have a three way…
and the mets are the ones getting fucked. beautiful.”

  128. Lynniemac Says:

Thanks, Eric. My favorite part of that (just slightly better than the comment where someone called Jose Reyes a piece of shit) was:

“Phillies just clinched their third strait World Series appearance”

    Shea-denfreude is awesome.

  129. will.H Says:

chase needs a beard like shane needs a redbull

  130. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

    130. Chase needs a beard, Jayson and Roy need their beards BACK. Of course, I think everyone on the team needs to grow a beard…including Cholly!

  131. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

and why the phuck did I type 130.?

…besides the fact that it was the 130th comment

  132. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

Damnit…Phillies news has been getting awfully slow again :(

I haven’t played a Baseball videogame in like a decade, but i’m really getting the itch to play one right now to kill time with.

  133. bigmyc Says:

Doesn’t matter how many times a “situational” situation occurs, it’s what happens when it does. A player is considered clutch when he is noticed to be successful at these situations enough times. As far as stats go, they may be the actual evidence behind this perception.

The key is; a pitcher will (and should) pitch a little differently when these “situations” come up. He will have to bear down. Depending on the pitcher, this will cause the pitcher to focus all the more or else tighten up and make a mistake more readily.

Anyhow, if a player knocks in 100 runs, he’s probably good at cashing in on opportunities at any rate.

  134. Amandah Says:

I would sooo totally do Jimmy Rollins. He would love my snappa. My snappa-pussy. My snappa!!!

  135. Jdashdog Says:

bigmyc, who are you talking to?

  136. bigmyc Says:

Originally, it was directed at Phylan and his “outing of the RBI stat” efforts, but in reality, I guess it’s toward anyone who’ll listen.

Hey, how ’bout that epic snowball battle yesterday?

  137. dlhunter Says:

(bigmyc marks a day off on his cell-wall calendar)

  138. Nick Says:

Carlos Ruiz and Pedro Feliz are some clutch mother fuckers IMO

  139. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

Chooch is VERY clutch, and he shows it to us ESPECIALLY in the post-season. What a badass mofo!

  140. Roy's beard Says:

don’t forget the other guy who batted after chooch, clifton.

  141. Amandah Says:

    Sad news about Eddie Spaghetti.

    He was a good man.

  142. DPW Says:

Dl-..that was disgusting hahahaha. Tug- that video settled my stomach and made me feel much better after going to Dl’s link. Appreciate that one.

Everyone on the team should grow some weirdo beardo’s. We need to make up for the subtraction of beardage with the departure of Bruntlett.

  143. bigmyc Says:

That pic is actually the water cooler where Dl works.
    He works at Hell.

  144. dlhunter Says:

    Correct.

  145. freddie the k Says:

I need pitchers and catchers to report to Clearwater.

  146. dlhunter Says:

The Fightins needs a christmas wish thread.

I, for one, wish to wakeup Christmas morn to the news that Tom McCarthy has been fired and Scott Franzke will now simulcast the TV/Radio broadcast with LA.

    One can dream…

  147. maria Says:

    dlhunter, I second that (wish).

  148. Lynniemac Says:

    Thirded, fervently.

  149. Jon Weeks Booth Says:

Fourthed, and it looks like the Phils are interested in Fernando Rodney

    http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/news/story?id=4765074

  150. Phils Says:

    Fifthed.
I ordered a surround sound system over the weekend and the breaking point which made me choose a certain system over another was the fact that it had AM radio. I’m not sure if the AM feed will be synced with the HDTV feed but it’s worth a shot for Franzke and LA in my livingroom.

  151. bigmyc Says:

Probably not happening on the AM sync up. However, good luck with that. If you find a way to do it, do share.

And also, that tubgirl snap was taken during his Dl’s honeymoon…in the posh Honeymoon Suite at the Super 8 on the Garden State Parkway with the little missus. You should all see the rest of the album.

  152. BigMiles Says:

I still hold out hope for a return of Scott Graham. McCarthy can go back to the Mets. I keep giving the Phils the benefit of the doubt regarding TMac because of Harry’s untimely passing and their lack of other options, but if they allow a team this good to go through another year with a TV play by play guy this bad it will be total bullcrap.

  153. BigMiles Says:

Also @ Phils…if the radio is consistently delayed, which is sometimes the case with the Birdies, just make sure you have DVR and pause the game for 5 seconds and then watch the game on a delay to sync with the radio. Just an idea that has worked for me in the past.

  154. CarlosBeltransexual Says:

    Re: McCarthy

I strongly suggest sending a respectful email to Scott Palmer (spalmer@phillies.com). He replied quickly and at least feigned understanding.

  155. maria Says:

If enough people send him an e-mail, maybe they’ll actually do something about it.

I’m feeling really delusional and naive right now.

  156. Lynniemac Says:

Christmas is the season for hope, Maria.

  157. maria Says:

I HOPE Scott Palmer has some actual power or say and doesn’t just play with toy trucks and wear thick-black framed glasses.

  158. Phylan Says:

If the Phils use the money they saved dealing Lee to sign Fernando “BB/9″ Rodney I just don’t know what the fuck

  159. Amandah Says:

What did everyone think of TMacs call of Howard’s homers to left: “Oppo Boppo!!!!” ?

  160. T-Mac = the worst Says:

@Phils. If you have issues with the AM radio feed synching up with the TV broadcast just pause the game and let the radio feed catch up then unpause it.

T-Mac is absolutely terrible. He has never heard of “white noise”. Harry was brilliant because of not only his calls but he did a great job of letting the game paint its own picture. McCarthy is incredibly grating and his girlish playing around with Sarge is awful.

@Phylan – I agree. If they are truly pinching pennies right now and they know that the bullpen was the biggest problem last year AND they go out and get Fernando Rodney or Mike MacDougal I will not be happy. If you are saving money by letting Lee go then you damn well better use those savings for a viable bullpen arm.

  161. BigMiles Says:

There isn’t really a viable arm out there T-Mac. It appears out backup to Rodney is Smoltz. Obviously there is a clear cut better option there. Brandon Lyon was the best fit but the Astros gave him an unreal contract when it looked like we had the upper hand on him. The Phils really just have to make a push to resign Park for starters and then go from there, but we definitely need another arm and it looks like we may have to overpay to do it.

  162. T-Mac = the worst Says:

I agree BigMiles. Just resign Park. He is better than the garbage being tossed around right now. How much is Park really asking for? It can’t be as much as Rodney can it? I mean the guy has no closing experience which is more valuable. Can’t they just give Chopper an american taco incentive in his contract?

  163. T-Mac = the worst Says:

There is a guy who looks just like Scott Palmer and he sits in front of me for my 17-game plan. I am also going to tell him that I want T-Mac outta here.

  164. Phils Says:

I thought for sure they would keep Chan-Ho in the pen. He settled into the reliever role nicely by the end of the season and it seemed like he was enjoying the team’s (and the fan’s) appreciation.
Are there reports that the Phils aren’t interested in keeping him or is it just an assumption based off of the reports that they’re looking at other relievers?
Maybe his beard is a stiff negotiator…

  165. Phylan Says:

They can’t re-sign Park if Park won’t re-sign knowing he’ll be stuck in the pen. Lyon and Rodney would both be horrible overpayments. They both walk too many batters, and Rube is just looking at them because of saves.

  166. will.H Says:

apparently chan ho park is the last one to know he’s best suited for the pen. guy wants to start, c’mon chan

  167. don Says:

I remember reading somewhere that he wants to start so people in Korea can have a predictable time and date to try to see him pitch, since the games are either in the middle of the night or early in the morning there.

  168. T-Mac = the worst Says:

Hey Chopper, if you want your native people to watch you pitch then go play ball over there.

IN THIS COUNTRY! (Jack voice from The Departed) you are a reliever.

  169. Phylan Says:

If I were Korean I would probably want to have sporadic opportunities to see a good reliever from my country than evenly spaced, predictable opportunities to see Chan Ho Parking Lot, Starting Pitcher

  170. bigmyc Says:

Easy, TMacistheworst, I’ve got you on hate crime watch.

  171. will.H Says:

bigmyc actually has a digital scooby doo crime watch

  172. dlhunter Says:

    hahaha

  173. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

Chan Ho wants to be the “Hero of the game”

Well, why the FLYING FUCK is being a great reliever that helps keep the game winnable NOT CONSIDERED A HERO?

I mean, being a great reliever is VERY FUCKING IMPORTANT!

and speaking of hero’s, what about giving him a shot as a closer? You can’t be much more of a hero than a closer who saves his team the game!

HE NEEDS TO FUCKING WAKE UP, AND HELP A TEAM WHERE THEY NEED IT MOST!

  174. Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-dro's soul glo says screw em motha fuckas who pitches in the 9th. Says:

Baez to the Phils? i just like his fastball and curve

  175. Roy's beard Says:

    there we go.

  176. paul Says:

    hey how bout an update.

  177. BigMiles Says:

I like Baez at 3 million a season but if it starts to creep up towards 5 million it ain’t worth it. He is good when he’s good and real bad when he’s bad (like most bullpen arms I guess). Definitely don’t break the bank on him. I would rather have Valverde at 6 million then Baez and someone else adding up to 6.

  178. Eric Says:

We haven’t even signed the guy yet and people already have bad things to say. I have a Christmas gift request from you guys. The next player we sign, the comments can only be nice things about the guy and the signing. It will be a weird concept we’ll aptly name “enjoying entertaining things and not being overly critical just for the sake of doing it because you think it’s what Phillies fans are supposed to do.”

/you know how people always go back to the Santa thing? it’s because you guys continue the cycle of terrible fandom that everyone says we have
//so the next time you get mad when someone brings up the batteries or the snowballs, remember that somebody warned you of the perils of continuing this cycle of being a lousy supporter (aka try to enjoy the sport. ENJOY IT!)

    Happy Holidays Everybody!

  179. dlhunter Says:

    Fuck you Eric.

  180. t-mac Says:

    I agree with dlhunter

  181. Nick Says:

    I agree with t-mac

  182. BigMiles Says:

I agree with Nick. The level of optimism on this site is head and shoulders above any other phillies-related site you will find. In fact Eric, I dare you to go back to some of these other threads and find anything negative that I have said about the Phillies brass or any part of the organization. I was simply stating that I didn’t want to make the same mistake the Orioles did and pay a guy 7 million a year to pitch like a middle of the road reliever.

  183. Eric Says:

If you jerkoffs are the most optimistic Phillies fans out there, then yes, we are the worst fan base in sports. You guys all suck.

  184. Phils Says:

    I agree with BigMiles.
I’m optimistic about Eric’s next post containing angry messages…

  185. Muscles Says:

    “Hey guythsszzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Lets focus on only the positives and pretend that nothing bad can eeeeeeeeeeevvvverrrrrr happen in the land of sugar plum fairies and puffy clouds! OH BOY! what a wonderful life it is!

Hugs and kisses – erica xoxo”

  186. Lynniemac Says:

Oh come on, guys. What would Christmas Eve be without Eric posting insulting names and telling us we all suck and are the worst fans? Warms the heart, really.

  187. DPW Says:

Gee gosh golly Eric is such a swell guy.

  188. BigMiles Says:

Eric must hang out with too many Eagles haters…that shit will start to wear off on you. So will not having new posts, then all the fighting starts.

  189. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

The Fightins turns into just fightin?

I blame Ruben, Eric, and Santa Claus!

  190. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

Oh, and I blame Howard Eskin also!

…and Cliff Lee for making me cry

  191. will.H Says:

“The next player we sign, the comments can only be nice things about the guy and the signing.”

    Eric.. talkin’ about being.. nice?

  192. bigmyc Says:

Watching you ball bags play grab ass with one another over hot stove conjecture is making me sicker than watching dl play “water fountain bliss” with tubgirl.

  193. dlhunter Says:

    bigmyc knocked over the pope.

    and eric filmed.

    sick fucks.

  194. lebowski Says:

Eric, if you’re looking for haiku poetry and holding hands, this board isn’t for you.

  195. Eric Says:

I blasted a hole through my blow-up doll this morning. Back to using my hand I guess.

    I’m so lonely on Christmas.

  196. Eric Says:

@ 195: Fraudulent Eric, I was not awake before 1 pm, so bad try.

@ 194: If you’d kindly go through my dozens of posts, it’s pretty apparent that I’m not looking for poetry and hand holding. My Christmas wish is that Phillies fans would stop being stupid assholes. Sigh.

  197. BigMiles Says:

Eric, point taken dude. We get it. Thanks.

  198. TonyIsDynamic Says:

Has anyone made the connection that Eric could really be Brunlett?

  199. Lynniemac Says:

Merry Christmas to all my internet Fightins friends.

  200. Jon Says:

200! Merry Christmas, all! I hope you all got what you wanted (A View From the Booth).

  201. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Mine wasn’t so great, but it could’ve been worse.

  202. Sara Says:

merry christmas to my real family.

  203. will.H Says:

lynnie.. most profound of merry christmases

eric.. typing with balls in your mouth is one thing.. but insulting the fightins commenters?

    lynnie.. hi

eric.. what’d you say, i didnt get that

  204. bigmyc Says:

Yeah. I wanted his hat. They didn’t let me have it.

  205. Jordan Says:

phillies sign roy halladay, mets sign kelvim escobar HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!

  206. Eric Says:

I’m pretty sure Phillies fans would prefer Escobar and Lee over Halladay.

  207. Jordan Says:

eric, are you serious? escobar is a piece of shit, he’s made one start in the last 2 seasons. they’re paying him 1.25m to pitch out of the bullpen.

  208. Eric Says:

I’m very serious. And I’m also serious when i say I’d trade Utley for Escobar any day.

  209. will.H Says:

lets trade ryan howard for howard the duck

    ?

  210. bigmyc Says:

Keep in mind, folks, it’s very easy to post under any name that one wishes. In that event, it’s probably very likely that this type of poster is attempting to usher forth fairly provacative statements.

I guess the point here that I’m trying to make is; if it seems a little ridiculous then it probably is deliberately.

  211. will H. Says:

I put raisins in my butt.

My breath smells like rhino ass.

    Girls are icky.

  212. bigmyc Says:

You see how easy that was?

  213. dlhunter Says:

My scrotumnal hair is prematurely graying.

  214. bigmyc Says:

    ..and again.

  215. Jdashdog Says:

    I hate you all

  216. bigmyc Says:

Nice try on the double bluff…but your avatar gives you up.

  217. bigmyc Says:

i still cant find my scooby doo watch

  218. dlhunter Says:

This place has turned into The Hater’s Ball.

  219. WorldPhuckingBEARDEDChampions010 Says:

anyone else thinking that Eric is Burger King Eskin?

  220. Eric Says:

I’m the one fan who finds a positive in everything the Phillies do and I’m the bad guy. Only in Philadelphia!

  221. Jesus Says:

    Eric ruined my birthday

  222. Lynniemac Says:

    will.H…hi. :-)

Eric, you’re not the bad guy for finding positive things in what the Phillies do. You’re the bad guy for insulting everyone who has a differing opinion and telling people to kill themselves.

  223. The Killer Zs Says:

    What Lynniemac said.
