My hopes of an Alfonseca return have been dashed
Posted by meech.one at 9:01 am ET 8 Comments

Antonio, Antonio, wherefore art thou Tonio? In his recent mailbag column, Ken Mandel of Phillies.com fame received a rather innocuous e-mail from an inquisitive fellow named Chris P. (Chicken?) concerning the availability of my blogging muse, one Antonio Alfonseca:

What is the news on Antonio Alfonseca? He was great last year, and could help this year down the stretch.
– Chris P., Harrisburg, Pa.

Antonio Alfonseca? Are you speaking of the pitcher who posted a 5.44 ERA and allowed 93 baserunners in 49 2/3 innings (61 games) last season? To be fair, Alfonseca compiled eight saves and a 2.12 ERA from May 26 to July 24, when serving as closer. That said, he still allowed opponents to bat .300 off him. No one should expect to see Alfonseca pitching for the Phillies this season.

First off, Ken — watch what you say about ‘Seca, i-ight? You came awfully close to crossing the line there; DON’T let it happen again. Secondly, Ken, may I remind you of that one month stretch in 2007 when, due to injuries, he was forced back into the closer’s role and had a 0.00 ERA? I remember it, because it SAVED OUR EFFING SEASON.

Antonio is more than welcome to pitch for the Phillies anytime he damn-well pleases. Thank you.

Shouldn’t targeting another starter be at the top of the list for the Phils? Replacing Myers in the rotation gives you both a proven relief pitcher and a #2 starter. I think I’d rather give Myers another shot in relief than waste away more prospects for a rental player.

I don’t know the particulars off-hand, but Myers is BY FAR the worst in the first inning of games. He has some ridiculously high ERA in inning #1 and it gets lower as the game goes on. I don’t see that translating well back to a reliever role, but maybe he’ll use up all his stuff in one inning.

Whether it’s the transition back to starter, or more likely, a problem with command, I actually feel confident that he’ll be much better in the second half of the year. He didn’t necessarily lose his stuff, he just needs to put together a few good starts in a row to regain confidence. He was almost on his way. Fucking Willy Aybar.

  3. MikeY Says:

Meech, it was actually Erick Aybar, Willy Aybar plays for the Rays.

  4. meech.one Says:

    Fuck both of ‘em.

    I heard Erick’s middle initial is ‘G’

  5. How do you spell retard? Says:

I heard his middle name is ‘DouchensteinvonAssholeG’.
When did you move th Harrisburg Meech?

  6. Conroy Says:

Alfonseca can’t pitch for the Phillies. During the off-season the team passed a rule – “No players with more than 5 digits on each hand.”

And as for getting a pitcher I say we go after Sabathia. Not for his pitching per se, but for the bat, did you see that knock he had the other day?

  7. How do you spell retard? Says:

If a reliever is needed, Ugueth will be available for the 2021 season (do the Phils still have his contract rights?).

  8. Gigi Says:

Hey Ken, if AA had a “middle” finger, he’d be showing it to you right meow….
