Around 150 people showed up in Fredericton, New Brunswick in Canada yesterday to proclaim Saturday, November 28th, “Matt Stairs Day”. The ceremony also featured the unveiling of a street sign that reads “Matt Stairs Way” (or “Matt Stairs Voie” if you speak Canadian) which will be prominently displayed on a street that intersects Royals Field in Fredericton — the place he began his professional baseball career.
From the sound of it, Royals Field is pretty special to Matt (via CBC News):
“Royals Field…that’s one of the most special ones I’ve ever been in [Ed Note: told you],” said Stairs, one of Canada’s most successful power hitters, with a 16-season career in the major leagues and 259 home runs.
“One, it’s in my hometown. Two, it’s where I was scouted, where I was signed.
“It’s a home inside of a home city. And now, just to have a street named around it is a great honour [sic],” said Stairs.”
The humble Stairs also admits that all of these love fests probably wouldn’t be going on if he never won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008 (via The Daily Gleaner):
“The signs that go on Royals Field … the street signs … you work your whole career to win a World Series. You win a World Series and all of a sudden this happens to you.
“The World Series is second, that’s for sure. To have my name … a street that’s named after me … it’s probably the best honour [sic] that’s ever happened to me.
“I’m a Frederictonian. I absolutely love this city.”
I’m sure Matt doesn’t actually enjoy Frederickstown or whatever the hell the name of that city is more than Philly, but I understand that you gotta butter those folks up when you’re there in-person. I’m also sure that upwards of 100 people out of the 150 that showed up made some kind of corny joke about taking Matt Stairs Way to heaven. And really, how could you love people like that?

What an honour. I love the colour of the sign. It is my favourite.

A day after this photo was taken, Matt Stairs proceeded to take a piss on Broxton Avenue, located in, where else, but Los Angeles.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I almost didn’t recognize Stairs without the elbow guard on.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
You know, from that angle, he kinda looks like Woody Harrelson. But, you know, fat and old.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Actually, if you speak, um, “Canadian”, it’s “Voie Matt Stairs”.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ aboot. Good you you, Matty.

should be a general philosophy– The Matt Stairs Way
November 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
lynnie, what does voie mean in United Statesian?
November 30th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Wow, I hate Canada 3% less now.
But…
- Think they could put a little finish on that wood?
- Maybe get the street signs from somewhere besides the DIY aisle at Home Depot?
- Does this ‘voie’ run through The Shire, or are 5 foot tall signs the norm?
- Who is that Canadian knock-off Scott Palmer? Bushleague…
November 30th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Drew, no reason to hate Canada. They have great beer, excellent titty bars, and Canada is kinda like our little brother that we can make fun of all the time but it’ll still look up to us.
November 30th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
will, that’s AMERICAN not United Statesian. DUH. And in this instance, the closest translation would be “way”.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
The only thing better than this would be if the sign said Stone Cold Steve Austin Voie, because they are the same person…

we got a lotta love for Matt Stairs, even though he didn’t do shit for us at the WBC.
November 30th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
That guy looks like a skinny, evil, wax sculpture of Jack Nicholson making an impossibly evil face to Stairs; who I might add has a peculiar ‘wtf’ look on his face because of one or more of the following reasons:
1. Bushleague signage. @ Drew you nailed that.
2. The sign says “Voie Matt Stairs Way”; roughly translating to Way Matt Stairs Way or Matt Stairs Way Way, depending on your French-Canadian reading comprehension and your level of limp-wristedness
3. The fact that this evil son of a bitch scary dude is clearly trying to steal Stairs’ black velvet cape. That shit is not cool.

The road is only open 1 out of every 8 days — which is how often Matt Stairs gets a hit. I will mix some Japanese in here and say “Sayonara Mr. Stairs” and your $3+mm salary! I have nothing against the guy — The Phils just need a more reliable pinch hitter and someone who can actually make it from base to base in less then 10 minutes!
November 30th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
I think they should change Pattison to Matt Stairs Way. It’s only fair, seeing as he’s the sexiest athlete in Philadelphia sports history.

Coste signed by the Mets.

Chip Carray gets fisted by TBS…will not return for 2010 playoffs
November 30th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
yeah, Chris Coste is a Met…this is…weird. Really weird.
November 30th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Outlaw, do you think John Sterling or Michael Kay will be the replacement? Tough decision…
November 30th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
i cant believe coste is a met…. we didn’t even get to give him a standing ovation this year….do we now?
November 30th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Chris Coste a Met? I think I might cry.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
@ Jdashdog – re: Titty bars.
I have heard this is true. I’m skeptical but always open minded when the subject is so near and dear to my heart.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Best part of the story is that the street is a dead end.

Wow, still a Yankees troll here? I thought that those Yankee “fans” had forgotten about it by now, since it’s been like a month. Shouldn’t you be flip flopping back and forth between being a Jets and Giants fan now?
December 1st, 2009 at 12:35 am
Aw, another Yankee fan who doesn’t believe their team won on its own but that it needed the Phillies to choke to do it. It’s so sad to see people who don’t believe in the team they follow.
