UPDATED UPDATE: So, the text in that Jon Heyman link has changed completely since I updated and there is no official word yet on who was traded where. But I’m pretty sure the Phillies are getting Roy Halladay.
UPDATE: According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Roy Halladay has just been acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies. Cliff Lee gets shipped to Seattle, and some prospects (including Michael Taylor) go to Toronto.
Roy Halladay is expected to sign a contract extension with the Phils.
Sorry about calling you insane, Ken Rosenthal.

You know, I tend to not get myself all worked up over trade rumors and shit, because most of them are just that — shit. But there are a few reporters out there in baseball land that I give more credence to than others, and if they print something, I assume that said rumor has a shred of validity.
One of those fellas is FOX Sports own Kenny Rosenthal. Now, no matter what you think of Rosenthal the slow-talking sideline guy that annoys you during FOX broadcasts, he is normally a damn good reporter. But this morning he wrote some insane column about this “hunch” he had.
Take a look at this beaut:
You want a blockbuster? How about one that includes not one, but two former Cy Young Award winners?
I have no proof that the Phillies are trying to move left-hander Cliff Lee as part of a three- or four-team trade for Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay.
But I’ve got a hunch.
You want a dumb trade rumor that has as much chance of happening as that Pat Burrell to the Mets trade from last week?
Come on, Ken. If baseball reporting was about hunches, every knucklehead with a press pass would just run possible trades through their dumb head and send them to their editor. It’d be fucking reporting anarchy, man. You might as well have just told us that the Astros are on the verge of signing Brett Myers and called it a day.
But nooooooo, you had to go and infuriate people by coming up with a trade that doesn’t make a lick of sense.
And of course, Ken wasn’t done there. Here’s his proposed “deal”:
So, here’s the deal: Lee goes somewhere for prospects. The Phillies include the prospects in their package for Halladay, maybe keep one or two for themselves. Halladay gets his extension, the Jays get a bounty of young players and some lucky team gets Lee for one year at his bargain salary of $9 million.
And then Halladay and Lee go a combined 57-0 with a 0.00 ERA and the Jays take their bounty of young prospects and form a dynasty — the likes of which the AL has never seen! The end.
Methinks Ken Rosenthal lives in fantasy land sometimes.
Aces Lee, Halladay in same deal? It could work | FOX Sports
Rosensquirrel screengrab provided by The Sports Hernia, of course.
UPDATE: Go read Bill Baer’s take, it makes much more sense than mine.

I have a hunch the Phillies are close to signing the Sarge-created clone of J.R. Richard.
December 12th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
I’ve got a hunch we’ll be back to being the WORLD PHUCKING CHAMPS this year! fuck the mets, yankees, and sox!
December 12th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
I have a hunch Ross GLOAD is gonna lead the NL in hits.

I have a hunch Rosenthal is a Hobbit…..
December 12th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I have a hunch Ken Rosenthal is a whiny squirrel with small man issues.
December 12th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I don’t care if he trades Cilff Lee, as long as Cliff remains here.
December 12th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Haha. Not pictured: The 3 phonebooks he’s standing on.
GLOAD of crap. Yes! My first Gload pun!
December 12th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Man, I can’t believe this shit actually came from Rosenthal. Rosenthal’s proposed trade scenario would be ridiculous for the Phillies to get involved in. I think Rosenthal has picked up the rock pipe.
December 12th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
That’s a pretty good idea for a baseball blog, actually: Smoke crack and then come up with wacky trade scenarios.

I second, Wrecked Em.

The whole talking slow thing was a little glossed over… but it is REALLY annoying.. It’s as if someone just punched him in the back of the head, right before they throw it down to him from the booth.
December 12th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
I don’t care if it gets us Halladay, we do not trade Cliff!
December 12th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
I have a hunch that Bill Baer is a smart guy who knows a lot about baseball, and that Ken Rosenthal is a dumbass who just wrote a shitty article with no actual reporting in it to fill some dead space. Wait, that’s not a hunch, that’s plainly obvious.
December 12th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
So…Ken Rosenthal’s hunch is that…
The Phillies will trade their ace on a one-year deal…for an ace on a one year-deal.
Genius!
December 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I have a hunch that Ken Rosenthal can give Joe Buck blowjobs while standing up.
December 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Not to mention trading our YOUNGER ace for an OLDER ACE.

meech where on this big dumb planet did you get the idea that Ken Rosenthal is a good reporter? He literally makes shit up, and this time he actually ADMITTED he was making it up. Why do people take him seriously
December 12th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I really have no probs with Ken Rosenthal, even when he talks about improbable situations. Until ANYTHING gets announced officially, it is all speculation anyway, and it should all be read with a grain of salt.
December 12th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
All those gloads of semen Rosenthal takes every Saturday afternoon must be starting to seep in to his tiny little brain.
December 12th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
meech where on this big dumb planet did you get the idea that Ken Rosenthal is a good reporter? He literally makes shit up, and this time he actually ADMITTED he was making it up.
Do you have stats to back this up?
December 12th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Yes I do, Rosenthal is like 2 for 1,323,439,293,402 in his career at having actual useful information
December 12th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
But what’s his VORSR?
December 12th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

December 12th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
His VORSR is only PROBABLY .5? Shouldn’t that be an exact measurement and not some nebulous number pulled out of one’s arse? I fear even to ask what his SARR is.

December 12th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
On second thought I wish I read this before getting my girl a Lee jersey for christmas.
December 12th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Even if Lee were to go this off-season, we still have our memories of 2009 to keep with us. Hate to say it, but I think it was Lee alone who saved us from further embarrassment at the hands of the WANKEES, so i’ll be forever grateful to him for that.
December 12th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
TonyIsDynamic- my thought’s exactly.
and i’ll second whoever said it doesn’t matter if it gets us halladay DO NOT TRADE CLIFF LEE! Ruben would have to be a moron.
December 12th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Working within the alternate universe where Ken Rosenthal is not completely full of shit, what’s so bad about trading Cliff Lee if we get Halladay, and can extend him? Not that Cliff Lee isn’t the fucking man (he totally is) but Halladay is an upgrade.
December 12th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Ken Rosensquirrel just popped out of a random box of popcorn to report something.
December 12th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Why the hell would you trade Cliff Lee for Roy Halladay?
At best, that would be slightly better than a wash for us…but could you guys imagine a rotation of Lee,Halladay, and Hamels…even if it lasts only 1 year?
Then if Lee left after the 2010 season, we would hopefully still have Roy and a (hopefully good again) Hamels for 2011.
December 12th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Hahhaaha. I love the “not pictured” comment.
And I when reading Rosenthal’s article, I can totally hear him saying it. I can hear the pauses and breaks after each sentence through his article.
“Roy Halladay…” *Pauses* “But” *pause* “I’ve got a hunch.”
Halladay for Lee. No thank you.
December 12th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
If we were able to be assured of signing Halladay to an extension and trading Lee was a part of that move, you do it hands down. If we can lock up either Lee or Halladay long term, it needs to be done sooner than later. With that said, no fucking chance this happens, no?
December 12th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Before anyone panics, remember this deal still has to be approved by commissioner, but in any case- what a crazy deal this has been.
December 12th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
and that’s ASSUMING that this is anything more than a crazy rumor, and who’s to freaking say Amaro is even after Halladay as badly as a lot of us think he is?
By Amaro’s own account, he see’s a signing of Halladay as “unlikely” or so he say’s publicly anyway.
December 13th, 2009 at 9:36 am
I have a hunch Rosenthal had a wonderful Hannukah dinner last night and ates loads of matzah. Fuck this dweeb. I want to punch him in the mouth.
December 13th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
This “hunch” is UnbeLEEvable!
December 13th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Call me crazy but I think there might be some truth to the little mcnugget’s hunch. Lee and his agent are supposedly seeking CC money, which the Phils aren’t gonna cough up. If they can sign Halladay long term instead, they would make a deal like this.
December 13th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
BigMiles, if that’s the case, I say we need to make a deal to upgrade, since that would make Halladay the cheaper of the two.
December 13th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Speaking of hunches…a bunch of commenters over at philly.com seem to think that we non-tendered Condrey to “make room” for Halladay. Jesus, what has gotten into people nowadays. Also, the conversation online somehow turned into people hating on McNabb. Once again- how many reasons do we have to give outsiders to make fun of us?
December 13th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
The problem, BigMiles, is that there are idiots everywhere. It’s just that the philadelphia ones seem more conspicuous because everyone already has a preconception that philly fans are morons. That’s called confirmation bias, and is a well documented psychological occurrence.
December 14th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Wow. I’ve missed quite a bit. There are actually some new posts on here since I went on hiatus. Neat-o.
December 14th, 2009 at 10:58 am
bigmiles, they were the same knuckleheads that called Charlie ’stupid’ and proclaimed the phils would never go anywhere. Classic human fair weathered behavior and im ashamed to live in proximity to them. Theyre the same braaahs that go to phils games post WFC and make a dick of themselves. In all, their foresight sucks, they cant handle a couple miller lights and their heart changes with the current standings.
oh and, i love ol donnie, im a big supporter yet i dont religiously make excuses for him.. just a big 5 lover–he really deserves it.

December 14th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I heead a rumor Halladay is supposedly having his physical done today at 4:30 at the Rothman Institute.
December 14th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I got a feeling, that tonights going to be a goodnight.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
I got a feeling that I am going to get drunk out the arse tonight!
…which may or may not be due to Phillies related news.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
@ Leon Black. Did you hear a rumor, or do you “have a hunch”?
The only rumor I’ve seen today on pitching is that Lackey is having a physical done today in Boston. And that is TERRIBLE news if you want to see Halladay in a Phillies uniform. Now the Angels are going to be desperate to get an ace to continue to compete in the AL, and the Yankees might think about getting involved again to one-up the Sox. Not good news at all.
December 14th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
That’s only a rumor though, and I sure hope it isn’t true. Angels need Lackey more than the Sox do, especially when you consider how crucial he has been to the Angels success in recent years. Let’s hope the BoSox rumor isn’t true…
December 14th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Darren Daulton says the Phils will get Halladay TODAY-Rumors of a physical at ROTHMAN institute in Philadelphia -Jim Salisbury reports Phillies are actively talking about a contract extension with reps for Roy Halladay
I don’t know how credible Dutchy is as a source for roy halladay related news, but if he’s right i really hope the phillies dont sign him past 2012
December 14th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
So like I said, Ken Rosenthal is usually pretty spot on.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Missanelli is talking about the report of Halladay taking a physical today as well. Oy.
Like everyone else, I’d like to see Halladay in Phillies pinstripes. But not at the expense of losing Cliff Lee.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
An insider told me that Halladay is currently with phillies team doctors…getting a physical….
December 14th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
People really need to come to grips with the notion that if we sign AND extend Halladay, Cliff Lee is an afterthought. Boras has already said he wants CC+ money and is going to test the FA waters. If we get Halladay with an extension, fuck off Lee.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I love lee but Halladay is a fucking rock star
December 14th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
For him to be in town taking a physical and talking extensions, you have to believe that the Jays have given him the go ahead to come down here and a trade deal has to be pretty damn close.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I hate the fact that this midget’s “hunch” might be right.. hate
December 14th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
My general rule of thumb is to not take anything seriously unless I hear it from Zo or Murphy…so I refuse to give any thought to this rumor.
/standing outside Rothman Institute’d
December 14th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Eric is right, if Lee really wants CC money, and Halladay is willing to take a discount to extend with Philly (which is now the rumor), it only makes sense, as sad as it will be to see Cliff go.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Still pissed that Ken Rosenthal might be right though

Halladay and agent in Philadelphia
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay and his agent have checked into a Philadelphia-area hotel, according to two Inquirer sources.
It is not known if a trade sending Halladay to the Phillies is imminent, but if Halladay and the Phils are negotiating–as is indicated by the pitcher’s presence in Philadelphia–that would suggest that the Phils and Blue Jays are far enough along in talks for Halladay to discuss a potential contract extension with the Phils. Halladay has one year remaining on his contract before becoming a free agent.
The Phils have long been linked to Halladay, and were actively involved in trade talks last July, before the team acquired lefthander Cliff Lee from Cleveland.
UPDATE, 3:04– The plot thickens: Foxsports.com has added that the Phils are in talks regading a potential three-team deal that would send lefthander Cliff Lee to an unnamed club. This makes sense for a number of reasons:
–Lee is owed $9 million next year, and the Phils need to clear payroll to sign Halladay.
–Lee will be a free agent after this season, and if he tests the open market the Phils would find it difficult to re-sign him, given their already robust payroll.
–Acquiring Lee may net the Phils some of the prospects required to complete a deal, without having to give up players like pitcher J.A. Happ and Kyle Drabek, outfielders Domonic Brown, Michael Taylor and Anthony Gose.

December 14th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
The deal will be fantastic if we only lose Lee and ONE of Taylor/Brown/Happ/Drabek/Gose. If we have to give up two prospects and Cliff Lee then I’m not sure it’s such a great deal.
That said, Halladay is better than Lee for one major reason: He’s a righty to compliment Hamels and Happ.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
No no no no no. Keep Lee.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
If the Phils can keep a hold onto Happ and Drabek and gain Halladay, I gotta say thanks a lot but goodbye to Lee. Although I will only say that if Halladay is locked down for a multi-year deal considering Lee has one more year left. With Boras talking about CC-esque money or free agency testing, ya gotta tip in favor of Halladay if he wants a contract extension.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I’d shit to see Lee and Doc both here. The Phils aren’t small or mid market anymore. They sellout most home games. Merch is flying off the shelves. Attendance and merch could only go up with that starting rotation plus Hamels and whoever. Phils are an elite team now in the NL and can spend like it. Keep Lee get Halladay and scare 12 colors of shit out of every NL team who wakes up to see that headline tomorrow “Phils land Doc, lose only Happ, Blanton, prospect”.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
I could see a deal like that working. Halladay is better than Lee, though not much, and he’s more expensive. Lee for a year would be very valuable to a team that’s close to competing but doesn’t have the budget for a guy like Halladay, but has prospects to spare (Rays? Rangers?). In return for eating the extra $5M in salary, the Phillies don’t give up as much in terms of prospects. It would be pretty weird for a guy with a Cy Young to pitch for 4 teams in 3 years though.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
TERRIBLE MOVE
How does our staff get better when sutracting Lee and adding Halladay?!?!
Please dont do it Rube!
December 14th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
I’m sorry, Mr. Rosenthal.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
RJ kill yourself. Try reading the comments and maybe you’ll figure it out.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
I’m also sorry Ken Rosenthal. I still don’t like you though.
Given the circumstances, this is what Philly had to do. And look out AL West, Mariners are dangerous.
December 14th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
December 14th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
How our rotation gets better in a Lee for Halladay swap…
1. Less lefty heavy rotation
2. Groundball pitcher in a small park with a very solid defensive infield
3. Proven record of a low pitch count and high innings with very few injuries (mostly flukes)
4. Much easier to sign beyond this year at less money
5. He’s Chase Utley like in the way he is constantly trying to improve his game

But as much as I loved lee, Im glad we have an ace that is a righty. Plus, we will now lock him up.

It’s official – got inside word Halladay is a Phillie.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
5 years of Roy Halladay in the NL East yields 2 Cy Youngs.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
as much as i’m gonna miss Phifer, i can’t help but give my entire stock of kudos to Roob for this. Still have the farm, still have a Cy Young winner, still favorites to win the NL.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
@Mas: What exactly is the right move? Lose Lee to free agency?
December 14th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
mas and RJ….its pretty simple. Lee was going to leave so why not lock up Halladay instead of letting him test the market and having someone else throw more money at him. Even if you think Lee is a better pitcher than Halladay (I don’t), its ridiculous to think that you would rather have Lee for one year and let him walk then you would Doc for 4-5 to compliment the lefties Hamels and Happ.
The possible prospects, as mentioned are the only thing that makes this go sour for us. Either way, if this officially goes down its one of the biggest days in Phils history because of how much it will determine the future of the organization.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
The next asshole that blames the Phillies for not signing Lee is going to get stabbed. HE REFUSED TO SIGN AN EXTENSION, IT IS NOT AMARO’S FAULT. Jesus fucking christ.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
sorry, quick trigger finger. #mariners definitely the third team. checking now with cliff lee is the pltcher they get.
Letting my imagination run wild. LEE AND HALLADAY????????? Drooling.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Eric is right.
If Lee didn’t want to sign an extension, what the hell is Ruben supposed to do?
I’m excited that Roy is a Phillie!
December 14th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
And John Lackey just got FIVE years from the Red Sox.
If Halladay has agreed to a three-year extension, Ruben did very well.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Halladay with extension is so much more valuable than having lee for a year more and losing him to the yankees or red sox anyway. this deal is perfect
December 14th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I just fucking spent 60 bucks to meet cliff last monday.
FUCKKK MEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Ken Rosenthal is god if this is indeed right
December 14th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
i’m really glad i told my girlfriend to get me a cliff lee jersey for christmas
December 14th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
The only downside to this trade? That pathetic, horrible puns in any form of “Happy” and “Halladay.”
December 14th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
How am I supposed to work right now? How??
December 14th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Newsflash:

December 14th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Must resist urge to cry. My man crush on Cliff Lee has been irreparably damaged.
Welcome to Philly, Doc.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
geez.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Still hoping against hope that the pitcher going to Seattle is Blanton. Hamels. Not Lee.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Can’t wait to celebrate the Halladay trade during the annual at the oakford inn
December 14th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I’m starting to get worried about who else we are giving up…Lee, Taylor, and others starts to sound a bit expensive.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Latest scuttlebut is that the Phillies are also getting some prospects back from Seattle in the deal, which makes it look even better. Seriously I am the biggest Ruben Amaro pessimist of all time and Eric is right, this was the smart deal. And it looks like the Phils made out again, pending details.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
yea. I heard a floating rumor that Victorino might be involved. I would instantly not likey.
Dear Ruben,
I love you, but do not destroy your core for pitching. Bad move.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
still a good move if Lee goes. Roy won’t go to a contender that the phillies will face in the post season(yanks/sox) and Lee won’t either(Seattle). Can’t wait to find out for sure.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
As a Yankee fan who wont talk shit but will try to put some perspective on this, I think this was a great move. I know all Phillies fans love Lee, but Halladay is a upgrade over him, which isnt easy to do. With that lineup behind him he could win well over 20 games.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
whoa. victorino involvement would sour this, NQA.
looks like Mariners may ship prospects to Toronto as part of deal, so that preserves Phils farm a bit.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Woops
December 14th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Nice call. When Rosenthal says he has a hunch, the translation is often that someone in one of the offices told him not to even mention that he heard such and such from a source. hooooly shit….
December 14th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Victorino wouldn’t necessarily be a bad move. You just picked up a #2 hitter with Polanco and you can easily shift Werth to center and insert Francisco/Mayberry into right for a year while Dom Brown spends a little more time in the minors.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
I hate this story, it has me and Phylan agreeing on something. Sigh.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Cliff Lee? WHAT THE FUCK DID CLIFF LEE DO TO YOU, RUBEN? WHAT THE FUCK?
December 14th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
SI_JonHeyman: im being told #halladay will agree on deal with #phillies, which would finalize trade. but not likely to happen today
December 14th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Holy shit, Rosenthal was right.
Um . . . sorry Ken.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@Eric through the looking glass motherfucker
December 14th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
please please PLEASE do not trade lee.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
fucking hate this. A LOT
December 14th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
By the way.. Seriously? Is there anyone who doesn’t see how good of a move this is….
Our window is large
1) Lee dissed US… He said No to a contract extension….
Lee Hates us, obviously.. If he loved us as much as youse love him
he’d be here through 2015…. Lee Blew It!! He’s the Jackie Martling / David Carruso of Baseball…
2) Halladay is going to agree to an extension
3) See 2
4) See 3
5) Core players for next 2-4 years: Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polonco, Hamels, Halliday, Drabek… Whaaaat?????
6) We are the godamn fightins!
7) Gave up NO Prospects..
9) We are the class of the NL
10) was Dutch’s number
11) We are the godamn fightins
12) Welcome Roy. Welcome, my son.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
how in the hell could you hate this until you find out the details? if we give up lee and some of our “untouchables” and dont sign halladay to an extension then i can see how you would hate this. but if we get 4 years of halladay and only give up one year of lee and no significant prospects then i dont see how you could dislike this deal because when it comes down to it, halladay is a better pitcher than lee
December 14th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
wait wait wait- Lee turned us down for an extension?
Then it’s on like Pokemon.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
He demanded to test Free Agent waters… See how that works out after a year in baseball Hell (Seattle)… You Blew It!!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
This deal stinks worse than the Davey Lopes’ ass. Why not just do the all-chips-in thang and trade prospects for Halladay and keep Lee — and have the best rotation in baseball. Then, you trim payroll by dumping that human dumpster, Joe Blanton, on some pretender. FUCK! I HATE THIS! WHERE IS MY CRACK PIPE?!? I HATE THE WAY LOPES’ ASS SMELLS, TOO!!
December 14th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
WIP just said Brown is involved too. I’ve heard Taylor too, so it’s likely one of those two.
So pros…
Halladay comes in…righty ace…ground ball guy…will be locked up for at least 3 years at about $20 mil a year when Lee wanted to go FA
cons…
We lose Lee who is a fan favorite…lose another prospect, which essentially means we gave up 5 prospects for Halladay…still need depth in the rotation.
In the end, it was a net gain. We weren’t getting Lee back for less than $25 mil next year and it would have taken us risking losing him on the market. We’re trading an ace we could have lost for an Ace who’s willing to be here for 4 years. It’s a good move. I’ll miss Cliff, and I’ll miss the prospect, but it was the right move by Ruben. That said, it doesn’t do anything but solidify us…we’re only marginally better at the position than last year…and in reality, the season still probably comes down to Cole and Lidge. Gotta love the fact that people are talking Phils in December though!
December 14th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Yup… Brown.. My bad..
We are the godamn fightins!
December 14th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
It hurts but it all makes sense in the end. They’re talking about Happ and Blanton now? Lee and prospects fine but Happ too? No way.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
@dlhunter: Lee’s agent is the Antichri…I mean Scott Boras. ‘Nuff said.
Okay, Rosenthal you were right, but I’m not sorry. I still think you’re a whiny squirrel with small man issues.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Nice job you fucking clowns. That’s why they are REPORTERS and you are fucking deadbeat BLOGGERS. Your team still chokes dick.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
It would kill me if we had to give up Taylor AND Brown. It’s blatantly obvious that Victorino and Werth are going to be hard to retain so we will definitely need one of them. Once again, though, impossible to pass judgement on this move until it all comes through.
The only known fact right now is a positive: it results in us having Halladay, possibly for 3,4,5 years.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
ESPN.com is now saying that the Phillies will give up Lee, Travis d’Arnaud, and another prospect whom the Phils/Jays are figuring out. The fact that there seems to be a disagreement on the final prospect indicates that the Phillies aren’t willing to give up Big Dom Brown.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
AP says its Blanton,Happ,Taylor for Doc
December 14th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Blanton, Happ, and Taylor doesn’t make sense. Someone’s confused. That would leave the rotation as what, Halladay, Hamels, Moyer, ???, ?????
December 14th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
this is very confusing. csn is now reporting a “hiccup” in the negotiations.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
@Don
No stupid it would be Halladay, Lee, Hamels…..
December 14th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
csn just said drabek may be involved in the trade.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I thought Lee being part of the deal was a forgone conclusion. If you’ve got Halladay, Lee, and Hamels it almost doesn’t matter who your 4 and 5 are, but I think that’s old news. What would Seattle have to do with that deal?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
@don-Seattle is sending that big Canadian righty who pitched in the WBC…can’t think of his name right now. And I find it really hard to believe that Drabek is involved in this deal.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
I should stop hitting f5 over and over again on like 10 websites and come back in a day when the deal is done
December 14th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Halladay, Lee, Hamels?
I just came.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Premature. Damn.
lee is in deal to #mariners. great job by them. halladay should agree to philly contract. might take a day or 2.
28 minutes ago from web
December 14th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
why would they trade lee? could he have pitched any better in the world series?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Yes, trade the flop! Bring in Doc!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Oh, nooooo!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Halliday is awesome, but i can just see this blowing up in our faces and having nothing happen at all.
/is philly after all
//sees self out
///still hopes it happens
December 14th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Lee was asking for Sabathia money, and they weren’t sure that they could sign him past next year. Instead, this is like getting something instead of letting him walk. It’s what the Blue Jays had to do with Halladay.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
and breathe.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
lol i love reading that people hate this ‘deal’
yall are silly
December 14th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Oh my god, why can’t people grasp the concept of this? It’s a smart move. Lee was GONE after this season, because he wants to get a big contract and I don’t blame him. So, it’s either include him and get Halladay and ink him to an extension OR burn through our farm to acquire Halladay and have no prospects left but have Halladay, Lee, and Hamels for one year, but then lose Lee and get just 2 picks for him. It’s a smart move.
Oh, and people in Philly really need to start learning how to spell Halladay, it’s not that hard, but a little more difficult than Lee…
December 14th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
So far the specific prospects I’ve heard are:
Taylor (via here…any other confirmation to this?)
Travis d’Arnaud to Toronto, via Jayson Stark
Drabek, via CSN
Am I missing anyone else? This is really what I’m most concerned with: who and how much we give up from the farm.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
ERIC Do you have anything better to do then bitch and tell people to kill themselves?!?!? Grow up and get outta your parents basement you fucking LOSER
I understand why the Phils would do this and I along with many other fans fantasize about a Halladay Lee Hamels 1-2-3
Trade Blanton Happ and a Brown and through in Eric on the side
December 14th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Its probably going to be a few days before the details officially come out. You’re killin me, smalls.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Polanco for Urbina….had seem feeling that day as I do today. But I’m sure some moron will tell me either
1.) but this is roy halladay or
2.) give me a bunch of BS stats why this is a good deal
December 14th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
RJ, I only want stupid people to kill themselves. You are a fucking moron. I’m merely responding to your post because you seem to think throw is spelled through. Nice job, kid.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
This deal reeks worse than the hair growing out of my ass crack!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
FUCK ROY HALLADAY!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Personally, I believe this is an intriguing move! Fly your Rainbow Flags high! Go Mr. Halladay!

People are already talking about how this makes the Me(t)ss even worse.

Please — please dammit — somebody explain this FUCKIN trade… It’s dumber than a black president!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
We traded one pitcher for a better pitcher. What else do you want to know?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
ANYBODY WHO SUPPORTS THIS TRADE IS A CRACK-SMOKING QUEER! (sorry for the caps, but i’m so angry.)
December 14th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
ERIC IS AN IDIOT. (sorry for the caps again.)
December 14th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
It’s true, I have trouble reading basic stats and watching a guy pitch.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
I just cancelled my season tickets. Fuck Roy Halladay!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
I agree with “makes brown” — eric is an idiot & gay!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
@OutlawPete I am the moron you are searching for and I can do either of those things if you so desire.
Also Drabek isn’t going, I’m pretty sure that was just a random rumor (then again most of this stuff started out that way)
December 14th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Roy Halladay is overrated & worse, he’s Canadian!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Anyway are any of you who are boo hooing over this trade aware of how the Lee extension talks were going (they weren’t)
December 14th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
KEN ROSENTHAL JUST SAID “FUCK YOU MIKE MEECH MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH!!!”. Then he ate Kashi while sitting on a kitchen-bar stool.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Who is the throw in from the Phils?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Cliff Lee is better than that fuckin Canadian!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
the fact that Lee wasnt willing to sign a reasonable extention means he wants to test the open market and stay in philly–and for that I have less of a problem seeing him walk. Really, I would have taken Cliff for the kind of guy who was willing to take a small hometown discount and stay with a city that instantly loved him.
But, it makes sense in the end if this deal goes through. Im not too excited about giving up Lee AND a top prospect.. but we’re getting one of the best pitchers on planet earth and we’re getting him for less money than Lee.
Think about it.. it makes the phillies an elite team for several years to come. Once Drabek is ready to pitcher in the majors.. we’ll probably have the best rotation in baseball come 2011. I understand the resentment some people have for this trade.. but it’ll all work out. Just remember, Lee wouldnt sign an extention and Halladay will. Gimme Roy
December 14th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Will H is lame — learn brevity, dopey!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Just because he played for the Blue Jays doesn’t make him Canadian, dumbfuck.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Roy Halladay is a FUCKIN LOSER CANADIAN!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Cliff Lee is not better than Roy Halladay. OK, with that out of the way, based on all the latest it looks like
Phillies get: Roy Halladay, Tyson Gillies, Juan Ramirez
Mariners get: Cliff Lee
Blue Jays get: Philippe Aumont, Carlos Triunfel, Travid D’Arnaud, and either Brown or Taylor, which is the sticking point right now.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
FUCK MATT!! AND FUCK THAT CANADIAN!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
FUCK THAT CANADIAN-BACON-EATING ROY HALLADAY!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
P.S. Phylan is a homosexual!!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
This deal has me confused… OK, why are the Phils giving up any minor leaguers? Lee seems like enough? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Tyson Gilles is a CANADIAN!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
How many names are you going to post the same boring crap under?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
FUCK ME UP THE ASS! This just in: Tyson Gilles is a FUCK QUEER-ASS CANADIAN!!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
@LongLivetheJetsons The Phils are giving up D’Arnaud and Taylor (most likely) to the Jays and getting back 2 prospects from Seattle. It’s part of what makes the deal work.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Muscles is a Canadian! Fuck him, too!!
December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Phylan, who the fuck are those two characters? Anybody useful?
December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
yawn
December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Thanks, Phylan (and fuck Muscles who is obviously from Canada!)
December 14th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
@Eric Gilles is purportedly one of if not the fastest player in professional baseball, good contact hitter and great outfield defense, no power whatsoever. Ramirez was projected to be a #2 starter by some back in 2008. He’s probably fallen a bit since then, but still very good potential, as I understand it.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
atleast my healthcare is free
December 14th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
confused. Cliff Lee fucked us over. Soooo why not trade for Halladay? Lee didn’t wana be here, so it only makes sense for Ruben to try and make the team better.
Cliff Lee hasn’t been here long enough for Philadelphia to be enamored with him.
December 14th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Thanks for the research, my bro!
December 14th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Joey Wade, you’re killing me, bro. Why would you want a Canadian playing in Philly?
December 14th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Yo, Muscles, you can shove that free healthcare up your blackhole!!
December 14th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

December 14th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

December 14th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Does this mean the City of Brother Lee Love shirts go half off tomorrow? Any chance for a “Halladay Season” shirt to be printed and shipped by Christmas?
December 14th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Joey Wade, how did Cliff Lee fuck us? He didn’t ask to come here, he didn’t bitch about it, he seemed to love it. All he did is not sign an extension before his contract expired. Do you blame him, if it’s the difference between $40 million dollars? Fuck no. He never said he wouldn’t resign here, but this is his big contract and if he hits the open market, there will be open checkbooks everywhere.
We’ll miss ya, Cliff. Good luck, bro.
December 14th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Nothin’ like a 20 win ice cream time.
December 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Blanton, Happ, and Dom Brown all took physicals, and Cliff Lee’s agent still says he knows nothing about a deal, so this may be completely different than it seems. Who knows.
December 14th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Damn!
December 14th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
If it is Blanton Happ and Brown, Ruben may have locked up GM of the year for the second year in a row.
December 14th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Brauneker has spoken with Lee today. “He is obviously aware of the situation,’ Braunker said. “There must be something to it.”
Brauneker, understandably, treaded carefully when asked if Lee was disappointed. “He certainly enjoys being in Philadelphia. There was not much for him not to enjoy.”
The Phils and Lee engaged in preliminary talks about a contract extension last week. “We had a positive dialogue,” the agent said. “All of the dialogue has been very positive on both sides.”
December 14th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
if its really blanton, happ and brown, i’lll put my penis in a man for the first time in my life.
RUBEN
December 14th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
remember me, the annoying dude?
well if ruben can pull the blanton happ and brown for roy, im sure we’ll all put our penises up ruben’s
December 14th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Apparently those physicals were part of some other failed deal in the works. Looks like the original framework is still in place
December 14th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
I would much rather prefer dealing Lee than Blanton, Happ, and Brown…assuming with Lee, we don’t give up Brown or Drabek. Lee is long gone after 2010. Even if he were willing to sign long term, with Halladay now, we couldn’t afford it without shuffling the roster a lot. Dealing Vic or Werth for prospects, etc. While I’m not against that, I don’t want it to happen until Domonic is ready to play in the bigs. Say we lose Blanton to free agency after the 2010 season, he’s probably a Type B free agent and we’ll get a pick for him anyway. I’m certainly for dealing Happ, but not in a package with Blanton and Brown.
December 14th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Now CSN is saying Drabek & Taylor would be going to Toronto. If Drabek goes to Toronto, wouldn’t that be essentially what Philly would have had to do to get Halladay in the first place, without trading Lee? The only difference being freeing up the salary. I’m definitely sympathetic to the argument that Lee was only here for 2010 and Hallady will be here to 2013. It makes sense to me.
But I’m not sure I can get behind it if it means losing our top pitching prospect. Blanton is probably gone after this year, right? Moyer is my hero, but I’m having trouble imagining him starting in 2010, let alone beyond. We’d have Hallady until 2013, but we need 5 pitchers. If we lose Lee and Drabek, by 2011 we’re looking at the prospect of our rotation being Halladay, Hamels, Happ and two current nobody minors.
Of course, I didn’t fact check any of this, so maybe I’m completely wrong.
December 14th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
It does sound expensive for us to lose Taylor and Drabek along with Lee (if this is the case). Maybe the Mariners will be supplying us with one or more comparable prospects??
