Certainly by now, you’ve heard — 47.17 year old Jamie Moyer channeled the ghost of Robin Roberts last night and became the oldest pitcher in the loooong history of major league baseball to toss a complete game shutout.
Granted, it was against the ANEMIC offense of the Atlanta Braves; the same Braves who have been shut out an ML best (worst?) SIX times already this season, including being no-hit by Ubaldo Jimenez back on April 17th. AND they were minus Jason Heyward, Yuney Escobar, and Brian McCann, but still — it was pretty damn impressive.
Thankfully, those hard working, spreadsheet making folks at Baseball Reference put together a nice little blog post outlining the best pitching performances by old folk that I highly recommend you check out. After reading it, I’m convinced that this just may be a record that will NEVER be broken. NEVER EVER.
And I can’t leave this post without giving some propers to Jayson Stark on the tweets, who was all over the historical significance of this feat as it was playing out last night:

No matter what Jamie is out there doing I pretty much assume he’s the oldest one ever to do it.
chooch is prolly slipping jaime a handful of dippin dots.
I can remember as a younger man thinking what a great accomplishment Satchel Paiges MLB carreer was to have even his limited success at that age. Now as an older man I see Moyer do what he does and marvel at him equally. In fact at my age now I hold them both in even higher regard to be able to compete at that level against such talented players.
Can’t beleive I was bellyaching about Jamie pitching last night. He really had a hell of a night. Everyone thought he was done after 8 and really showed Jamie some love as he got the 3rd out. Quite a surprise to see him walk to the plate in the bottom of the 8th. And then he pulled off an 11 pitch AB? Unreal. Kudos to Charlie for sending him out there in the 9th to finish what he started.
agreed. being at the game, that at bat was one of my favorite moments. also, it made me realize how the american league blows. besides the fact that you actually have to manage in the NL, there’s nothing like a good AB from a pitcher.
Laughing between EFFS at the thought of Moyer getting kicked to the coyb.. duhmasses.
Moyer taught Walter Johnson his circle change.
EFF THAT.
That baseball reference blog article is good reading. One thing really jumps off the page at me: Who the hell was Jack Quinn? Apparently, he wasn’t all that bad.
@crazy4swayze: amen brother, the DH does rob the game of some of its great moments. At least the NL still plays baseball the right way.
