The Fightins’ drew first blood against Boston in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd in South Philadelphia last night. A fired-up Phillies team practically put the game away after the 2nd pitch in the bottom of the 1st when defending NL MVP Jimmy Rollins cleansed a Colon fastball deeeep into right field. Three batters later, Ryan Howard hit the first of his two opposite field homers on the night to make it 3-0, and that would be all they needed. Hamels was sharp as usual, the only blemishes being back-to-back solo shots surrendered to Dustin Pedroia & JD Booo in the fifth.
After the jump, some more game notes…
UPDATE: Per request, more pink ape man at the bottom.
- After an over-analyzed slump, Ryan Howard has quickly risen towards the top of the leaderboard in homers (T-2nd in NL) & RBI’s (T-1st). This morning, Todd Zolecki opines on Howard’s high strikeout total,
And the strikeouts?
Relax. Strikeouts are only slightly worse for a team than fly outs or groundouts. And strikeouts have been proven to correlate with home runs, slugging percentage and walks. Those are good things. Those are the things that made Howard a rookie of the year and an MVP.
Holy shit. A knowledgable beat reporter. Who’da thunk it.
- The 700 Level has some quality highlights of Ryan Howard AND Pat Burrell’s triple (a sign of the apocalypse). Also, hilarious footage of Bartolo Colon losing his helmet mid-swing.
- BDawk was in the building!
- The fine folks over at Hugging Harold Reynolds have footage of the lady who caught Pedroia’s home run ball and refused to give it up. Kudos, lady, that tradition belongs in Wrigley ONLY.
- And finally, Hollywood Hamels chimes in on the competition:
“We can compete against them any day of the week. Hopefully, we’re destined to play them in the World Series.”
Not so fast, Hollywood. I mean, it’s way too early for all that “Red Sox in the World Series”-talk.
Here’s a bonus shot of the pink ape man showing his appreciation for Cole’s performance as he is taken out of the game:

Zolecki is routinely good … something that definitly can’t be said about all local beat reporters.
re: the ape … he is alone in the stands like that? If so, did he wake up decide to purchase a single ticket, a giant pink ape suit, a generic Phillies jersey, make his homemade sign and head down to the bank? I need to know more about this pink phillies-rooting apeman

The Phanatic has to get that guy up on the dugout for some dancing.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:02 am
The Phanatic did have him up there in the 7th or 8th inning. Of course to the beat of the Beastie’s Brass Monkey. He started up in the 400 level and ended on the dugout. Well done Monkey Man.

I just watched basically an entire Simpsons episode at work trying to come up with this quote:
“I hate every ape I see, from Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z …”
in retrospect it was totally worth it.
