From Jim Salisbury’s Inqy column this morning:
Brett Myers’ next minor-league start will be Friday night in Florida for single-A Clearwater at Brevard County. The plan is to have Myers join the Phillies the next day in nearby Miami and return to the starting rotation July 23 against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
That same “baseball source” also said the Phillies are taking a look at Oakland righthander Joe Blanton. Which, imo, is a much better option than A.J. Burnett.
Here’s to hoping that brief minor league stint for Brett worked out for the better. Considering the July 23rd Mets game is shaping up to be pretty important, we should find out right away.

I don’t know if Blanton’s that much better than Burnett. In his last eight starts, he’s 2-6 with an ERA of 6.74. He comes cheaper than A.J., I’ll give you that. However, his inconsistency is a big factor. If you look at his last five starts, Blanton has given up 8, 1, 7, 1, and 6 earned runs in that order.
Given a choice between Blanton and Burnett, I’d bring up Happ as the fifth starter, and tell Eaton either to take a few minor-league starts or sit his underperforming ass down.
Maybe we should check in and see how Kris Benson is feeling… oh, never mind.

So Myers is up, Eaton down? Take that garbage arm out the rotation and call Happ back up.

Man, I look at Blanton and he just seems like a complete stiff to me. I would rather “stand pat” than trade for Blanton. I hope they don’t do it.

Re: Blanton v. Burnett. The thing is that while both have been wildly inconsistent this year, Burnett is a potential #2 pitcher when he’s on his game, whereas Blanton’s somewhere closer to a #3/4 pitcher. What the Phils really need is a top of the rotation starter (in my opinion at least) and not another innings eater (we already have Happ who can potentially do that). Burnett for me.
