If you’re been reading/listening to all of these fantastic Harry Kalas tributes like I have, you’ve certainly heard some of his finest calls over and over again. Aside from Schmidtty’s 500th homer, most of them have been replayed were fairly recent; from either their amazing division-clinching double play, or the Brad Lidge strikeout of Eric Hinske to win the 2008 World Series. I figured people might want to hear some of his memorable older calls as well, so if I run across any, I’ll certainly pass them along.
This one, from April 13th, 1983 (which just so happened to be the day that he died 26 years later), is easily one of my favorites. The Phillies were down 9-5 to the New York Mets heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. After Metro relievers issued four walks to the first six Phillies that came to the plate, the score was now 9-6 and Jesse Orosco was lifted in favor of RHP Neil Allen. Catcher Bo Diaz then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, 2-outs, down three runs.
Take it away, Harry…

what are the psychological steps involved in dealing with a catastrophic loss?
i think i’m now at “depression”
April 15th, 2009 at 11:21 am
I actually think I’m still in the denial stage.

And I get goosebumps yet again. I am definitely with you on the denial stage Meech. I think when I go to the game on Friday it will probably all hit me when I drop the flowers and the picture of me and Harry together from Photo Day in 2007 on the memorial for him 3rd base side. It is going to be a rough day to say the least.

great post. my favorite call comes from the late 90’s when lieberthal hit a walk-off 3 run homer against the pirates, coming off that abdominal tear. phils were down 7-1 in the 9th after a 2+ hour rain delay. my favorite harry call ever. any way to get ahold of that?

Great idea. Keep them coming.

My favorite was his Bob Dernier 3 run walk off inside the park in 87 I believe. I think they were 68 games out of first but you might have thought they won the pennant.

My favorite call was in the CSN tribute: “Chase Utley, you are the man.” Wow that was great. I wish I could find the full clip.

I have a wonderful memory of Steve Jeltz hitting his 2nd HR in 1 game back in 1989. Harry was so surprised and overjoyed I think he almost choked on the microphone.
RIP Harry the K

this call made possible by the Sarge with a 1 out walk to get the rally going.
this call made legendary by the greatest voice god ever gave humanity.
RIP H the K

Meech, can I make a suggestion for a great call? Victorino’s walk off in 07′ against SF on his figurine day. That was pretty awesome.

Any call in a late inning bludgeoning of the Mets is in order. There’s a lot of them, especially in recent years.
I don’t recall if Harry made the call when Pat Burrell’s bat got in the way of a Billy Wagner fastball a cuple of years ago.

Cot Damn that is awesome. Whitey with his patented OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! is awesome too.

BDUN:
“High fly ball, deep to left … Could it be? … VICTORINO! … No Ka Oi! … Shane Victorino — on Victorino Figurine Day! — has won the ball game with an opposite field home run! Phillies win it 9-8! You couldn’t've scripted it any better!”

That’s brilliant, Amanda. Any idea what No Ka Oi means?

Thanks Amanda!

It means, “is the best” (had to look that one up).

Watch and listen to Utley’s homer on that same page that Amanda posted. That is what I fear.

That’s what i’ll miss the most the classic Swing and a long drive…! Harry cared about the phils and loved when they won and was just as upset when they lost. Sportscasters are no good these days. Less concerned about the game they cover then they are with promoting their own brand. I miss Harry everyday and may he R.I.P.
