A few weeks ago during his visually captivating Septa Independence Pass project, the distinguished R. Bradley Maule (or beelove as we know him here on The Fightins) of Philly Skyline made a stop at Laurel Hill cemetery to pay his respects to the greatest broadcaster we have ever heard, Harry Kalas. Brad’s words:
At Laurel Hill’s entrance, Harry Kalas’ family had graciously left a guestbook for his fans and visitors of the cemetery to pay their last respects; at his burial place, a temporary headstone had an etched version of Harry in the booth, and a six foot wooden P painted Phillies red marked his grave.
Here’s the picture of the grave (click to enlarge); after the jump, a shot of the guestbook.
***
In case you can’t read it, here’s what Brad’s guestbook entry says,
“Swing and a miss, STRUCK ‘IM OUT! The Philadelphia Phillies
are 2008 World Champions of baseball!”- the everlasting call from the everlasting voice.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, HARRY.

A friend of mine had told me about seeing a plot marker the day of the memorial service at the ball park. He’s also has since told me about a few people’s headstones that he’s seen there-y guess is y buddy hangs out at grave yards too much. When I get a chance, I’ll try to send in a picture of the head stone from before he was laid to rest there.

hate to be a nag, but he doesnt say “your 2008 world champions of baseball.” leave out the ‘your’ and the call is correct. still nice though

Fucking nag! As usual, that was my mistake.

@meech.one

June 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Nah, I’m a big Padres fan at heart. What kind of question is that?

Easy on the Pads. They can’t help that they play in the most apathetic city in the nation.

When joining The Fightins Meech’s first order of business was to tell me he his actually a Nats fan but knows a Nats blog would have zero readership.

@ Soren: bravo.

This is a good idea for those of us that missed the service at the yard. RIP HK.

That’s the saddest thing I’ve seen today.
I’ve been to Harry Caray’s grave, though. Poured out a can of Old Style and left a half-eaten Billy Goat cheeseburger there.

I read about this in an article in the Courier Times, was a good read.
For another good read, I really do have to recommend the book “Remebering Harry Kalas” that’s available for $10 at WaWa’s throughout the area. Some amazing stories are told in that book. I’ve read about a quarter of it so far. It tugs at your heart when you read it, especially when you read Larry Andersen’s story about Harry, and the 1993 team.

…oh for those of you weren’t able to read the article in the Courier Times, the Kalas family is having a six foot stone memorial built, in the shape of a Microphone.

thanks, meechy.
if you’re interested in this sort of thing, HK’s grave is just a few down from frank furness, probably philly’s most famous architect and a decorated civil war veteran – his headstone is surprisingly humble considering how exuberant his designs were. also, general george meade is on the hill just above HK, right along the pathway that leads down to his section.
if you stop in the office near the entrance of the cemetery, they’ll give you a map that shows his plot.

I hear that Adrian Balboa is buried there, too.
