Happy Anniversary, Brett!
Posted by meech.one at 3:18 pm ET 9 Comments

Do you believe it’s already been 2 years since Brett Myers had an “altercation” with his wife on a street corner in Boston?

Me neither.

Well, Rich Rys of Philadelphia Magazine remembers exactly when it was. And to celebrate(?) the occasion, he has penned a reflection of sorts for Deadspin; along with a run-down on the recent history of domestic violence cases in the MLB.

Speaking as a Philadelphian and fan of Brett Myers, I think he gets treated FAR worse than any other wife-abusing athlete in the history of sports. The sole exception being Orenthal the football-playing murderer. Just take a look at the list of the other domestic abusers mentioned by Rys: Dmitri Young, Milton Bradley, Jose Canseco, Derek Lowe, Bobby Cox, and Alberto Callypso. The first three are basically just considered “eccentric,” the next two are known more for their on-field performance, and that last one is a fucking nobody.

Almost everything I have ever written about Brett has received some type of wife beating mention in the comments section. Some were funny, but most were just flat-out dickhead-ish. Is it completely unwarranted? I guess not. Do I condone what he did? Of course not. But Brett’s wife, Kim, forgave him. They are still married. And 90% of the public still won’t let him live it down.

I think it might just be time to let it go, people.

Cuff links make a nice anniversary gift.

  2. Jeffrey Says:

Maybe it was a one-off thing and maybe it’s nobody’s business. Maybe fans should stop bringing it up.
    Or else…
Maybe people can’t forget about it because it’s extremely f***ed up. Maybe the fact that a public figure like Myers assaulted his wife in public makes people wonder how much worse it gets when there aren’t any witnesses. Maybe it’s more common than not for an abused woman to publicly forgive their abuser because of the psychological damage that goes with physical abuse.
Maybe it’s made even harder to forget because Myers comes across most of the time like exactly the type of man who would punch a woman a foot shorter and a hundred pounds lighter than he is. Maybe.

    Maybe.

    But those are all assumptions.

Maybe it would’ve been much easier for Kim to file for divorce, get half of that $25 million contract he signed plus alimony for the 2 kids they have together than live with an abusive, demonstrative husband.

Maybe she thinks Brett is a really good guy/husband/father who made a horrible mistake and deserves a second chance.

Or maybe, that part of his life and what his wife chooses is none of my business. (Okay, probably)

I’m saying, it’s quite possibly the lowest level you can sink to as a man. He deserved (and received) a ton of public scrutiny and some sort of punishment from his team. I think he’s completed his penance, though.

  4. Gigi Says:

Would we (as a city) have accepted him back if he weren’t such a key contributor to last year’s NL East champion team? My assertion would be a loud and clear, NO. Instead he is villified on bus logos, billboards, commercials and fan cheers.

If his wife accepts him back – fair game – however this was not public knowledge to the level of his transgression.

I hate to point out my beloved city’s hypocrisy but I’m trying to get laid here, and I figured if I take this stance I’ll definitely get some pussy.

    what’s up….ladies….

    /classless/tasteless/tact…ful?

  5. Gigi Says:

vilified definitely did not come off sarcastic enough – I apologize for the confusion.

  6. Gonzo Says:

Thank you for this post, Meech. It had to be said, and you said it brilliantly.

  7. James Beale Says:

You can’t both write that we need to live the incident down AND make the post picture a hilarious wife-beater/jersey tee.

Personally I think he got Philly back when he made that fantastic Phillies ad last year with him and Shane dancing in the dugout.

  8. Gaze Says:

I still don’t like what he did, but since all of the good jokes have been overplayed, I’ve dropped the incident from my large arsenal of Brett Myers complaints.

  9. How do you spell retard? Says:

Now we can focus more on his GG Allin-like way of dealing with reporters.
“I’ll knock you the fuck out!” Stay classy, Brett.
