Front-runners? Jimmy Rollins got some ’splainin to do.
Posted by meech.one at 9:26 am ET 31 Comments

In between their ass-whoopings at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers while barely clinging on to first place, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard paid a visit to those hoodlums on The Best Damn Sports Show.  Instead of talking about who the zaniest guy in the locker room is, or whatever the hell they talk about on that show, Young James thought it was the appropriate time to express his opinion on Philly (more specifically, Phillies) fans.  The outcome makes me wanna punch a certain MVP-winning shortstop in the throat:

“There are times, ya know it’s like, one of those cities they, ya know… I might catch some flak for this — they’re front-runners. When you’re doing good, they’re on your side, When you’re doing bad, they’re completely against you”

Frontrunners, Jimmy? You mean, for the past 25 years we’ve only supported all those winning teams we had? All fucking zero of them? That’s the only time we support our teams?

Oh, okay. So when like, our defending MVP shortstop is having a shitty season and is on pace to score about 70 less runs than he did last year — we should just unconditionally support him? Is that what you mean? Or when that same defending MVP gets benched for not running out fly balls or gets stuck in traffic on his way to a game vs. the Mets — we should just brush it off and cheer you on anyway? Got it. Thanks for the tip, J-Roll.

I gotta be honest though, the following quote is the one that really shouldn’t have been made:

“For example, Ryan [Howard]’s from St. Louis. Ya know, St. Louis, it seems like, they support their team. They’re out there… and they’re encouraging. In Philly, you can’t be no punk.”

No disrespect to Cardinals fans, but these are the same guys that gave a standing ovation — twice — to So Taguchi upon his return this year. I’m sorry, Jimmy, but we don’t get down like that.

We, as Philadelphians, are mostly annoyed when the players we cheer for don’t give a concerted effort.  When they look like they’re not trying, or making stupid mental errors, we let them know.  But for the most part, our anger is focused towards the inept management of the franchises here.  Players who do their job and try usually get a pass.

And if that annoys you, Jimmy, go to fucking St. Louis and play.

Go to fucking St. Louis and play.

“Do it, Jimmy, you’ll love it! They don’t boo when you screw up. If you dog it, they just sit on their hands and offer kind words of encouragement. Hell, half the time it’s like they don’t even realize they’re at a sporting event!”

  2. Chamomiles Davis Says:

By the way, I wonder how Oakland fans are going to react to J-Roll’s little jab at the end of that clip. “They just don’t show up?” Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy…

  3. Utley20 Says:

get out of town then rollins, u suck this year anyways. your team has been sub-par the last few months and you’re still selling out games. the phillies are constantly letting the mutts and fish back into the division hunt but we still got your backs. u obviously can’t handle it. u get mvp last year although holliday probably should have won it, and u suck this year, what kind of player does that make u look like? i would not be dissapointed if we traded u for a good pitcher and bring up donald. u should go try and play in new york and see how much better they are. or just go to the marlins bc u won’t catch any flack there bc they have no passion for baseball. u catch so much flack bc u r the reigning mvp and our leadoff man but r no where near the top in runs scored. leave or get on your horse and lead us to the playoffs again.

  4. How do you spell retard? Says:

Not to play the “you make millions take it you pussy card” but…

Everybody gets treated like shit by their customers, Jimmy. Try working in a department store. Trying getting berated by some middle aged heifer about returning a $5 sweater and only getting $3.50 back because they didn’t have a receipt. Try geting treated like dirt by unfuckable hags, knowing you don’t get benefits, vacation time, personal days, and a lofty $7.50 per hour.

I’m personally offended that he went on The Worst Dang Sports Show. That program is a turd.

  5. How do you spell retard? Says:

    *correction: it’s $7.30 an hour

  6. Joseph Says:

Even though A-Hole, I mean J-Roll, forgot how to play baseball this year I still went out and bought my 5 year old son a Rollins jersey last month. That’s right. Me, a Phillies fan who has to save up money just to go to games, financially supported Rollins by spending $65 on his stupid jersey when he was “not doing well.” Boy, do I feel like a sucker. Trade him.

  7. BDuns Says:

I am putting my J Roll bobble head into time out. What an idiot.

just got a Free Rollins jersey, authentic for the Majestic store and I don’t even want to wear it.

  8. nealy27 Says:

Unfreakinbelievable – another clueless jerk opens his stupid mouth and inserts his foot. Maybe if the team would have stuck a foot up his ass when he began loafing in April, he wouldn’t have to “suffer” through his fans not kissing his ass while he stinks up the joint while making millions of dollars a year!!. What a short memory. “MVP, MVP, MVP.” I mean, you didn’t even have to win one playoff game, and we still loved what you did last season. Forgive us for actually wanting more. Why would we. We’ve been basking in all the World Series, Super Bowls, Stanley Cups and NBA Championships these past 25 years. Oh wait – I was having a dillusional moment.
Hey Jerky, I mean Jimmy – :JUST WIN SOMETHING!

  9. Mike Says:

Really everyone BUT Philadelphia should be pissed. Rollins called them all punks.

  10. Gonzo Says:

Every fan base boos their team. But Philly fans seem like a-holes when they do it. If Jimmy said it that way, everyone would nod in agreement.

  11. phillyforlife Says:

Even Sarge tonite during the LA 4th game series said if you can’t take the heat..get out of the kitchen..we boo because we love our Philly sports teams..if we didn’t boo we wouldn’t care..you guys are professional athletes who are spoon-fed..gimme a break..get off yer ass, stop whining about the fans and worry about winning a damn pennant already wtf

  12. Lynniemac Says:

I fear that playing in St. Louis might be a tad too intense for J-Roll. Perhaps he should consider t-ball, where he could run the bases backward and still get cheered, and handed an orange slice after his exertions.

  13. Philly Steve Says:

I love Rollins. I freaking love the guy. I love the triples. I love everything about the guy. And I love the Phillies. I loved them in ‘64 when they blew it. I loved them when they lost 20 in a row, won one lousy game and started another big losing streak. But when the frigging hump dogs it on and off the field and then wonders why he gets booed, he can go to hell. I don’t need him. And by the way, Ruiz ain’t bad, but his average sucks. If you ain’t getting booed when you hit 200, you ain’t playing in front of fans. Batting 200 is helping us lose, and when Jimmy gets lost and can’t find his way to the park, he is helping us lose. The reasons for the boos are different though. Ruiz is trying, but not succeeding. Rollins has all the talent, and he’s not trying. I may boo Ruiz, but I like his effort, his hustle, his preparation. I can’t say that about Rollins. May he find himself in the middle of the street between Pat’s and Gino’s in the middle of the night. Then he will find out what the average fan thinks about him. What a freaking hump!

  14. Nelly26 Says:

I don’t think I’ve ever been this angry at a Philadelphia player in my life. I’ve grown up on this team and supported them my whole life. What gets me is that he is probably one of the most beloved players in Phillies history. He has been one of the fan faves since he put on Phillies pinstripes. What REALLY gets me is that I was one of those people who was chanting MVP MVP when they won the division, I think he forgot about that! He had the nerve to say all this crap when he goes 3 for 18 in the LA series. Philly has always been known for their knowledge of the game and if they think that their players aren’t playing to their potential they let them know about it. Jeez, we are paying up to 100 dollars to see him slack off? But we don’t have the right to vent our disgust? What a total tool. Jimmy has def. changed this year…I think that MVP went to his head.

  15. frankieg102 Says:

Too mad to even make any kind insult. I could write a book about this. If I go to another Phillies game this year, I’m bringing a giant sign that says somethin like “Trade Rollins”. Look for me.

  16. h Says:

“but we don’t get down like that”

This basically explains the awfulness and “flightiness” of the typical Philadelphia sports fan – Rollins is right. Philly fans act like they’re the ones playing the sport and that the players owe them something – simple – if you don’t like it – stop paying your money to go see it, watch it, or whatever. Then maybe, the management you are so angry about, would see the loss in revenue and interest and make a move to change things around. You like to rip on other towns and such, but what you don’t realize:

Although Philly has improved some, mainly downtown, it’s still a 2nd rate town.
Other towns teams win. Maybe other towns are the ones doing something right.

“but we don’t get down like that”

Yeah. Philly is comfortable being 2nd, or 3rd or whatever all the time, as long as we place and never winning anything big, as long as we get some attention in the process huh, that’s how we get down. Go figure.

By the way, if Philadelphias so tough, why do they take comments like the one Rollins made, which is true, to heart? If you’re truly tough, words don’t even bother you. I guess that’s how Philly get down too, huh?

  17. How do you spell retard? Says:

If you’re truly tough, words don’t even bother you
If you’re truly tough, you don’t take bullshit. And you call people on their bullshit, until then cowardice truly shows. If you’re weak, you accept what others think of you without response.

if you don’t like it – stop paying your money to go see it, watch it, or whatever.
If Rollins doesn’t like geting booed, then get the fuck out of a job that requires you to serve the public.

St. Louis would cheer Amadinejad. Because they’re weak.

  18. h Says:

“If you’re truly tough, you don’t take bullshit.”

If you’re weak you cry about bullshit and remain inactive in solving bullshit – you just accept things as they are and expect others to solve problems for you, all while just talking and criticizing. Accepting what others think of you without response isn’t a sign of weakness if it’s backed up by action, especially if that action leads to victory. Does the saying “actions speak louder than words” mean anything? If you talk the talk, then walk the walk. Can you imagine how many wars and destruction would happen if leaders just fought over what other countries say about them? Philly hasn’t proven they could back up anything with action, and it seems as if it’s more talk. However, New York and other winning towns, including St. Louis to an extent, have the right to boo and cheer their teams (be “flighty” for short) because they have proven themselves as winners, thus when there’s a lack of performance, that takes them out of that cloud of victory and it makes them uncomfortable, so they want to get back in the winners circle and being flighty is just the normal by-product. Meanwhile, Philly’s version of being flighty, is more like a spoiled child looking for a handout – what big time victories and/or actions can Philly claim that gives them the right to be that flighty?
By the way, you call people on their bullshit through action. You don’t just take any statement you hear and go off the wire – you gotta wear your knives for the right reasons. If someone says something about your ma or family or wife – then hell yeah you call them on their bullshit. But if someone likes JR makes such a statement, which tells the truth about Philly fans, while in a way complimenting them at the same time – there’s bigger things to get up in arms about. Prove JR wrong thru. action if it gets you that offended. Stop buying his merch. / Phillies merch, stop paying to see the games, etc. and maybe things would change. Don’t elevate the players to god-like status to the point where they would underperform, if you’re not prepared for the consequences.

Philly needs to show they are proven winners. Until then…

“If Rollins doesn’t like geting booed, then get the fuck out of a job that requires you to serve the public.”

You’re talking like JR is a politician. I think being a sportsman, he’s used to getting booed and cheered, he’s just making a statement on the subject of being booed and cheered in Philadelphia. Let me set it straight – nobody likes being booed – then again nobody likes flightiness. Would you accept a spouse who’s with you in the good, but when things go sour, they leave you for another only to come back when things become good again? Not saying Philly should just accept anyone with open arms regardless, but part of the problem is Philly fans themselves – you sit there supporting these teams, when the simplest thing to do is stop supporting until something gets done to where the team becomes proven winners. Look at the Sixers post-Iverson. The team took awhile to get it back together, and seats weren’t being filled because of the lack of performance and star power. After several ticket package promotions just to get people in the seats, similar to what you may find at a minor league game, and a boost in performance on behalf of the team because they were getting a kick in the ass in a different manner, interest was spurred again – and they went on a romp that led them to the play-offs and give one of the best NBA teams with bigger superstars a run for their money. My point being:

As a sportsman, JR or any other athlete isn’t required to serve the public. Serving the public is what politicians, leaders, and to an extent, innovators, do. Athletic organizations are in the business of winning. Keyword – BUSINESS. Business is successful based ON how well their product is accepted by the public. It’s an EXCHANGE, not a SERVICE. Athletes do community service et al. because they are so visible, which is a by-product of good business and good performance. Of course, the public wants to see the games, thus the public get’s involved, and in order to maintain the publics interest, it all comes down to business. If Philly fans revel in being asshole fans, but they still go to the games and get the merch. then guess what – your money is still going towards supporting underperformance! However, if you become an asshole in a completely different way, i.e. simply not supporting the team until performance improves, thus you get the bang of your hard earned buck, then maybe the teams performance would improve! Nobody likes getting booed, and getting booed isn’t a reason to just quit. You re-evaluate yourself, shut the hell up, and play. I’m sure he’ll get it together.

As far as St. Louis and Ahmadinejad – I doubt, even if hell froze over, they’d cheer Ahmadinejad any day of the week and I don’t think they’re such a weak town. I don’t think any American town would. Get over that cave man, childish mentality, and realize that toughness and weakness is more than just brute force or displaying brutish behavior. It’s also a mental and emotional state.

  19. MattS Says:

This is for you J Roll- we know how you guys love to hear it – E A G L E S !!!

  20. metsfan Says:

hahahh, i agree with rollins 100%. U guys boo rollins and howard even though they have carried u guys the last two years. I dont see you guys booing utley though even though he has been in a big time slump for the last 2 and a half months. Why dont u guys boo him? I think i know why. Well, the bottom line is that the Mets are better and even through the toughest times we support all our players and never boo. Thanks rollins, by the way the Mets could use him and move him to second base.

  21. vassillios Says:

^ metsfan, if you are trying to say that we boo black players and not white……get fucking REAL.

Chase Utley does not get boo’d because he hustles ON EVERY PLAY. He is everything you want from a star baseball player.

Pat Burrell has been atop of the boo birds list for the last 6 years. Not so this year because he is actually putting together some solid, consistent numbers.

Mike Schmidt probably holds the philly record for all time boos…a hall of famer, superb 3rd baseman and phillies home run king.

Rollins gets boo’d because he’s got zero hustle this season, batting <.200 with runners in scoring position w/ 2 out, few runs scored. It should be noted that before his comment on BDSS he was RARELY boo’d.

Howard hasnt been receiving many boos this year and since the second half of the year has received substantially less boos, mainly do to his better production at the plate. He will most likely break the all time record he set last season for strikeouts.

  22. Henry Says:

Leave Jimmy alone, he’s only speaking the truth. If you’re a REAL DIE HARD PHILLIES FAN then you wouldn’t be booing but CHEERING & SUPPORTING “YOUR” players. Whoever is OFFENDED by this obviously is a FRONTRUNNER because if you’re not then why would you be OFFENDED? Jimmy and I have the same personal trainer and Jimmy didn’t say ALL PHILLIES FAN are FRONTRUNNERS because I live in Queens, NY (15mins AWAY FROM SHEA) and I go down to Philly to SUPPORT EVERY SINGLE PLAYER from an MVP-LIKE season or the player who just got called up who STRUCKOUT in an IMPORTANT SITUATION & I’m a PHILLIES FAN. If you don’t like a player then DON”T CHEER 4 them, don’t bad mouth them. You keep booing & yelling out obscene things then they have a right to say what Jimmy said. I was just at SHEA with ALL MY PHILLIES APPAREL and I never said anything about the METS even when they yelled out crazy & obscene things about the Phillies. We were winning so I just said “LET’S GO” and the players name and LOOK THEY WON ON THE ROAD AGAINST THE RIVALS. You guys who boo are doing it at home, they get enough and alot of flack from the METS and the other opponents fans that we don’t need it from our OWN HOME CROWD. LET”S GO PHILLIES 2008!!!

  23. st. louis fan Says:

I was there at both games and I stood up for So at every game. He was a good player and he would never dis his fans. That’s why we stood up for him. And we do boo players when they don’t give their all. Boo to u and more power to Rollins.

  24. JCon Says:

St Louis Fan: Not to mention that So Taguchi was an integral reason as to why we won the world series in 2006. He pulled out some monster hits in that post season.

If Jimmy Rollins wants to play baseball in St Louis, I’ll let him… but St Louis is in the “Show Me State,” and we don’t just praise everyone. You have to prove you’re worthy of it. Even when people mistake us for booing, we are actually chanting “louuu” as in Lou Brock… because he was an accomplished and classy ball player while wearing the birds on the bat.

Why sit and boo, management will get rid of them…

  25. GBfan Says:

Philly has the worst fan base in sports. every set of fans boos their team…actually never mind, only the bad ones do. packer fans never booed their team. thats what ya call REAL fans.

  26. mocat Says:

    Philly Fans,
    Scoreboard. (as in WS)
    -Cardinals Fans.

  27. JD Says:

Did I watch a different clip? He says basically that y’all are passionate. That its like family (you know, you can boo your sister’s play, but you’ll punch that other guy that does it).

I didn’t see anything bad here.

  28. will.H Says:

GBfan, you booed aaron rogers just last year. So, you’ve proved that you are neither a fan of Green Bay or even a fan at all. Now, thats REAL.

mocat, you can hang your hat on some WS rings decades ago, but we’re the champs now. If i were an old fat has-been that was really really cool in high school 25 years ago, i wouldnt be so proud. In fact, if i tried to snub someone by saying ’scoreboard,’ id feel ashamed for trying to be clever.. and sounding like an 11 year old.

  29. Donovan McNabb Says:

What?! Philly fans boo their players? Say it ain’t so!

  30. sotaguchi Says:

First of all, So Taguchi totally deserves any standing ovations he gets from the St. Louis fans. Despite his inconsistency, he’s been a clutch player in many instances. Secondly, it’s not a bad thing when players want to play in your city because its fans have a reputation for always supporting the team – and in the Cardinals case, for being consistently good. That’s much more than can be said for the Phillies.

  31. cory Says:

if all sports fanbases were kids, philly sports nation would be the one only child of the bunch. thats the best way to say it, really…
