Best call by far — “the crowd could not be more stunned nor could I”
August 24th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Really? You couldn’t pick a better picture than the one of him looking drunk? Was he staying up all night playing ass quarters with LA?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Since when did he appear on TV?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:44 am
This is even better the day after.
Offtopic-Why is today’s game on at 1PM? Who plays a Monday afternoon game? I’m going to miss Phifer!
August 24th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Thank God for SCOTT FRANZKE…
FRANZKE IS THE FUTURE.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Why is it that all the real fans understand how much better Scott Franzke is than Chris Wheeler and Tom McCarthy?
He needs to just be simulcast on both TV and Radio.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Talk about a love/hate relationship with Beardo. I was screaming for Chase to be in the game only seconds earlier… Then I woulda probably S’d his D. [NH]
August 24th, 2009 at 9:48 am
J-Roll is probably going to sit today-must be wanting to ride the hot streak of everyone’s favorite Gnome.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Not to take anything away from Franzke, who I really like, but man, I’d have loved to hear Harry’s call of that play.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Tim – we’ll be saying that for many years
August 24th, 2009 at 10:00 am
And also, how about Eric Bruntlett – for a guy who, with all due respect to his great beard, isn’t really that good, to be at the heart of a lot of history for the Phils. He scored two game-winning runs in the W.S., one a walkoff and one that would decide the series, and now he turns only the second unassisted triple play to end a game ever. The guy may not be great, but he has a knack for making history.

Mr. Bryan, I was wondering that too, turns out it’s a getaway game, the Phillies have a 3 game series starting tomorrow in a different city (Pittsburgh), so it’s for the sake of travel arrangements etc. Guess I’m going to be completely unproductive today.
Anyhow, yeah, Franzke is great, and I wish he could get the TV broadcasts. When there’s a nationally televised game I fire him up the gameday audio and just pray that it syncs up.

Although I would add that I don’t get all the Wheels hate. He knows when not to talk as a color commentator, and he knows a good amount about most of the players around the league, and his anecdotes/facts/analysis are usually relevant. If you think he’s a bad color commentator you need to hear some of the people they have around the league.

My only guess would be they are afraid to switch TMac/Wheels for Franzke/LA because no one would listen to the radio broadcast anymore..
August 24th, 2009 at 10:41 am
“The Phillies are at double play depth on the infield.”
My favorite line.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Did anyone else LOVE the stunned look on Francoeur’s face for about 10 minutes after he hit into the triple play?? As everyone else was walking back to the dugout he popped a squat in the dugout and stared blankly for a good 5 minutes….it was priceless
August 24th, 2009 at 11:37 am
What a GREAT GREAT call. Absolutely fantastic!
Afterwards, I kept hearing a line in my head from the great Harry Kalas. He once said, “The greatest thing about the game of baseball, is you never know what you’re going to see when you come to the ballpark”.
Truer words were never spoken.

I always think about how wonderful it would be to listen to Franzke/LA on the TV as well, though I don’t think I would enjoy T-Mac/Wheels on radio…. I think it is really important to have a really great radio team, however, more-so than a great TV team, since, for me, if I am hearing the game on the radio, it’s because i am not near a TV, and therefore, needing to be more engaged since there is “nothing to look at” – which is why i think Franzke/LA are perfect for the radio – they entertain as well as call the game….Wheels and T-mac, more “by the book” and end up being more unintentionally entertaining than actually entertaining, IMO – i would get so bored listening to them on the radio…

Franske/LA are a team. T-Mac/Sarge are a team.
Wheels fits in with NOBODY. The only reason he’s still around is because Dave Montgomery is the president of the Phillies and you have to sodomize and murder a child of one of the 7 owners to get fired.
And even then, if it’s a commerical break, they may give you a second chance.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Franske looks, in the picture, that he could use either less benadryl or more coffee but as the soundbyte proved, there was a third option; an unassisted triple play.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:52 am
those fuck-ups at espn played this on sportscenter but said it was ricky bo and some other guy. awesome call tho. wheels and t-mac suck balls btw
August 24th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
This is why Franske needs to be on tv.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Fayleez, you seriously think Sarge is better? He’s the John Madden of Phillies baseball broadcasting.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
sweet call !!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 24th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
@Phylan
Be careful what you say of Sarge, ’specially on this website.
Sarge > god
August 24th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Chills. I have Chills. Put Franzke on Tv. Please…..but seriously, other than being a great talent, I’ve met Franzke a couple times and he is incredibly nice and extremely modest.

Can we get a Bruntlett Three Way T-Shirt? Maybe with just a beard on it?
August 24th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
@ Shaun Great idea there. I would but a sarge oh my and the beardo 3 way shirt.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
@Shaun, that would be a perfect addition to the Birdland store. I can picture it now, Bruntlett’s beard with his awesome glasses killing 3 Douches with one ball.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
I don’t like Wheeler and TMac because they are either chit chatting about dumb shit or kissing up to the opposing team. Sarge is the savior every 4th inning. The two of them have zero respect for the play by play and by the end of the game their broadcasts are like 80 percent fluff and 20 percent play by play. They should get Franzke and LA similcasted on tv and radio
August 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Echoing the majority opinion here, Franzke is the best the Phillies have. I’ll listen to the game on the radio despite being near a TV because he’s that much better. While I’d love to have him on TV, I’d want it for at least 6 innings, preferably 9 (but that will never happen). If it’s Scott/LA for 1-3 and 7-9, I’ll suffer through one of either T-Mac or Wheels for 3 innings, assuming Sarge is there for the three. While I love Sarge, I don’t see him working well with Franzke. Hopefully, next year they flip the TV and Radio guys, but something tells me Wheels is going to be anointed.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Everytime I listen to this I just feel like Franzke was going to yell “THERE ARE NO FLAGS ON THE FIELD!” at some point. I bet L.A. slammed three consecutive beers to commemorate the occasion.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
wow, i didnt know LA’s love of ass quarters was public knowledge
August 24th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
It was in an article in the City Paper or Philadelphia Weekly. I thought everyone read those.
