According to Jayson Stark on the Tweets, this is only the second game-ending unassisted Triple Play in history. The last one coming on May 31, 1927 when Johnny Neun did so for the Detroit Tigers.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was… “amazing”. Sorry Mets, but you lose.
I’ll be making the ladies thighs itchy tonight!
I don’t mean to bust on T-Mac on the call, but isn’t the phrase one FELL swoop?
it’s like they say – watch a baseball game, see something new every time. love this game.
Un-Fucking Believable… Where’s Rod Serling?
Picture a beard going on a journey beyond sight and sound…
I never thought I would go from cursing at Eric Bruntlett at the top of my lungs to saying how much I loved him a second later! Wow, what an ending. I think Lidge might have cried if we had lost that game.
This was only the 2nd time an unassisted triple play has ended a baseball game in MLB history!! the other was in the 20′s. Good job Eric, somehow you are part of history.
Beardo might be good in my book for awhile after this.
LOL the only reason this shit happened was because manuel sent the runners, really why would you fucking do that asshole????
First fuckin’ Phils game I missed all season. Damn it.

Just further proving my theory that people don’t actually read blog posts.
@ meech
yeah sorry, I have to admit, I was so excited I just started writing. I saw that immediately after. Kudos on how fast you got this up by the way! Great clip.
I am living up in northern Jersey right now, lets just say that the Mets postgame was priceless.
John Clark called it, “Kim Batiste times 5.” I’d agree. In all honesty, if he doesn’t stop that ball from going to the outfield the hit before that, the guy’s not on second to even be in position to turn that.
raise your hand if you thought that mr. bruntlett would be the phils fielder to get an unassisted triple play.
@jeff- they’re a scream after the mets lose a close one or do something stupid! i can’t believe i forgot to watch that.
It looks like he points toward Francoeur at the end. I know he didn’t really, but the last angle makes it look like Bruntlett’s giving him a “Fuck you, you little bitch. Look what I just did” gesture.
Poetic justice.
that was one of the strangest innings. two errors and a misplayed groundball doesn’t seem like it would lead to history.
I think it’s safe to say, Bruntlett is officially off my shitlist.
@Mand raise your hand if you thought Bruntlett would score the game-winning WS run. He has the devil’s luck-but WOW, what a play (x3)
My boyfriend is a new Phillies’ fan, and I’ve realized the first thing they pick up on is our surly attytudes. He had just texted me, “Bruntlett needs to go back to the minors”.
How can anyone think baseball is boring?!
@theoldsport I really, really, really hope that’s what he meant, and that Teethy picked up on it.
Lidge got lucky circa 2008 right there folks
@ philsphan: at least for the day, right?
I would have bet that anyone of the other Phillies on the field would have done that before Bruntlett. I’m including the outfielders in that.
@Joey Wade – Yeah at least until he screws up again
I love how Chris Wheeler feels the needs to explain where all the outs came from. Really absolutely, not at all neccessary.
I went from hating Eric Bruntlett and wishing him to the Mets and then to loving him.
Well in all fairness to Lidge, Francoeur should have come up with possibly 2 outs, nobody on… so in a way it was nice to see him actually get that break. Other games he blows it’s all on him, this was the D for a change. I will raise my hand and say that I thought it could be likely that Bruntlett would hit into a game ending triple play.
@ Maria
I completely agree, I mean granted I don’t see any triple plays often, much less unassisted (15th in history I think?) but I like how he feels the need to mention that catching the ball is one out. stepping on the bag is the 2nd. and I was confused how they got the third but he cleared it up by mentioning that when he tagged Murphy that was an out too.

I’d love to see video of this.
I love reading the opponents’ newspapers after a loss to Philadelphia teams, especially in playoff games. Truly one of the underrated pleasures of the Internet age.
Someone in the Mets organization really, really, REALLY pissed off the baseball gods at some point.
@ John Booty
yeah I have to admit, especially this year, with all the Mets have gone through, local radio and postgame has been quite amusing. After this game, Jerry looked like he wanted to throw up. Perhaps not knowing this was only the 2nd in history, a reporter asked him if he had ever seen this before.. Meanwhile, this was going on back in the clubhouse…

I like how Wheels explained the outs. And I loved the WOW he let out.
Franzke’s call was awesome too.
i know im a little late to the party but ive been throwing up for the past hour and half cause of how sweet that was…apple juice!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to hear Franzke’s call if anyone can put it up.
@Jeff I agree. The defense made 3 bad plays leading up to this so it had that feeling like it was going to be one of those games for Lidge. You know, the ones where he implodes. Luckily, Jerry Manuel sent the runners and Eric Bruntlett was in the right place at the right time.
So this weekend had a KTFO and a GTFO… Love this team.
So now Eric Bruntlett will be forever known for something other than being the beardiest WFC. It’s a strange #!@%in’ world we live in.
Fuck all of you idiots for now loving Bruntlett or “taking him off your shit list”. He had no reason to be there in the first place. We have a utility player who can play about 7 different positions if asked to. Sorry he doesn’t hit .300 folks, if he did he would be a starter.
Perhaps Cairo on the bench inspired Beardo?
Franzke and Andersen:

Franzke’s call is brilliant. The excitement in his voice literally gave me goosebumps.
@eric, you should have said “sorry bruntlett isn’t batting .200″ his average was pathetic before today and his defense doesn’t make up for much. @victoryno, I agree with franzke’s voice his calls and his voice make him sound like an old school announcer.
This is off topic, but did anyone else find it hilarious when they showed Jamie louging in the bullpen chugging a red bull?
Thank you for the Frankze link.
“The crowd could not BE more stunned, and neither could I!”
Franzke’s was way better. Maybe things are changing for lidge now
Wow, Scott and LA so much better than T-Mac and Wheeler. Thanks for posting that link.
Beardo made me think of this quote – “just when i think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you do something like this, and totally redeem yourself!”

Best play I have ever seen from a living lawn gnome.
MP – he plays once every 35 games to give a guy a rest. He can give anybody except the catcher a day off. Whoever he is subbing for, our lineup can hide his bat. It’s just a utility player. He played 30+ games when Rollins went down, he played 3 innings a night when Pat would get pulled, he could pinch run. He does all of this without any hint of animosity. The anger directed at him really is unwarranted.
nice Ericc. High Five.
I loved how Francoeur threw his helmet down midway to first.
I’m not angry at Bruntlett, I just think a guy on a WFC roster could string a half decent at-bat every 35 games.
Thanks for the audio link. It is great.
Why, oh why are Wheels and T-Mac on tv when there are much more interesting, and much better announcers in this organization? That call by Franzke with LA and his giddy giggles is infinitely better and should be heard by everyone.
MP – clearly last year you didn’t watch Jenkins, Burrell, Ruiz, Howard, Coste. Maybe this year you are just walking away from the TV when Ruiz, Stairs, Rollins, still Howard, Francisco are batting. The point is, a lot of these guys have shitty at bats. It’s a team game and the season is quite long. Bruntlett has not gotten many at bats and when he does, he struggles to get a hit. Regulars are allowed to “work it out” and typically spend an entire week going 0 for 4 every night. We let our starting shortstop do it for about 4 months now. This shit happens. Your argument is just horribly invalid.
A living lawn gnome…. Haha…. Funniest shit I’ve heard in weeks!
Wow, Eric. If that’s really how you feel, then I highly suggest that you don’t check out our blog. I think it’s safe to say that you won’t be very pleased.
Jerry Manuele is just not a very good manager. Why would you send the runners down by two runs with no outs? Just like the other night…the way the mets season has gone…why would you take a pitcher out of the game when he has gone 5 inings and only allowed 1 hit? I dont want to hear that he was on a pitch count…its do or die for the mets now…if they want to get back in this race , they need to win every game at any cost!
He was on a pitch count because he was coming out of the Pen for the start. They probably stretched him out as far as he could have gone. I agree with you, but I think that’s their idea-that they still could stretch him that far and actually rely on the rest of the Pen. Good idea? Not in NY.
@andy: he was on a pitch count. It took him 80 pitches to get through those five innings.
i jokingly called that triple play and it happened…weird. next i think i will predict a cliff lee grand slam to utley’s corner, although that could be more probable with the way he has been hitting and that it is being compared to anything positive coming from bruntlett
I’m glad Wheels pointed out all 3 for me. “There’s one out, there’s two outs, and there’s your third guy right there.” Otherwise I would’ve had no idea
I did check out the website. I don’t give two shits about Bruntlett, but the lack of content or anything or any real substance is why I didn’t like it. Take care.
I am waiting to see if I spot any Eric Bruntlett jerseys this weekend.
Eric is such a hater
That was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen, I can’t believe that Jerry Manuel tried to do a delay-double steal WHAT A BUTT-HEAD.
PHILLIES RULE
AND METS DROOL.
GOOD JOB ERIC after making two errors you won the game for the Phillies and save Lidge’s neck from blowing a save.
