After celebratory jaggov Jose Reyes launched a 3-run shot in the sixth inning and did his tired handshake routine with his teammates, the usually mild-mannered Chris Wheeler gave him a piece of his mind:
I never thought I’d say this, but: +1 Wheels
Seriously Jose, I know it’s a big game against your division rival and you haven’t been in sole possession of first place since April, but calm down a bit little buddy. It was the sixth fucking inning.
Phils radio announcer Larry Anderson had the same idea as Wheels after Reyes’ shenanigans, but his was a little more violent. I’ll try and get that audio later…
UPDATE: Well, Enrico over at The Level beat me to it. Go listen to the Larry Anderson audio where he says, “Somebody outta put one in [Reyes'] neck… acting like he just won the World Series.” [The 700 Level]

I… like… Wheels…?
What is this odd sense of… he’s an alright guy…?
Sort of like So, Wheels just redeemed himself for seasons of mind-numbing banter.

It’s a good thing Wheeler didn’t have to cover any Rickey Henderson games from back in the day. He would have sharted his Depends even harder than he did for Reyes.
Get well quick, Harry Kalas.

Reyes is a jackass. Why wasn’t he doing that stupid handshake after getting Victorino out at second the night before? Oh yeah, he blew that play….
Karma is a bitch dude. Make your time….

Yeah, let’s get all emotion out of the game. Nobody should be happy in baseball, it is only a job, not a game. Waaaaaaah, same old Phillies, waaaaah, don’t be excited, waaaaaah the big bad Mets…..waaaaaaah
July 24th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
The people of Philadelphia need to show some class. Not only are the fans obnoxious, rude and classless, but so are the players, and now the announcers. Players can get excited over a homerun, a great catch, or maybe even a simple base hit. What they can’t do is beat their wives, swear on national tv, and threaten violence.

Wow…what a bunch of sore losers!
Looks like the announcers are as miserable a lot as the fans.
Guess I can’t blame you guys…you have to live in Philadelphia.

I have been tolerating Wheeler’s antics for years. Also, I would have plunked Reyes in the 1st inning today. Yet again, a Moyer fastball might not hurt. Anyway, I am still not that worried about the Mets…they will begin thier slide in about 2 weeks.
July 24th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
JP, why don’t you just drop all this nonsense about class? The city of Philadelphia and its residents are fine. If you’re trying to imply that New York doesn’t have classless fans you are sorely mistaken. Philadelphia fans are passionate and love their teams. Who cares about “class” anyway? If you’re civil at a sports game, you’re not paying enough attention.
I’d rather have Anderson than that idiot Keith Hernandez announcing games.

@ BigTom:
Sadly, Grandpappy Moyer is too classy to bean Reyes. Let’s get Brett to do it next time we meet up.
/overplayed “Brett Myers likes to hit things” jokes

I got a better idea. Stop giving Reyes fat pitches to stroke over the fence. 12 of his career 56 homers are against the Phils. That’s insane.
July 25th, 2008 at 9:14 am
NY MET fan here. Look, we know Reyes has some growing up to do, hell I’ll even go sa far as to he may be beyond that, but that was a big hit for us. We’re trying to catch the Phiiles, heck, we’re trying to prove we CAN win and compete. Big moment for us, and excitement is a good thing.
Reading these comments proves, like religous disagreements, our point of views are deep routed and no matter what you say, no one is objective in something that is passionate. For example, we’re convinced that Hernandez is a GREAT announcer! We all love this stuff.
July 25th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Sa da tay, Pooty. That was actually a well-put, sensible response. I was beginning to think Met fans were incapable of such a thing.
But yeah, bottom line, we HATE everything about the Mets and when some Cro-Magnon looking shortstop from your team runs the bases with #1 in the air celebrating like a retard, he gets called out in Philadelphia. That’s just the way it goes. We enjoy hating the Mets. It’s fun.
I’ll tell you this though (and this is not a knock on you, Pooty): If one of the Phillies does something that irritates Met fans, I’m certainly not going over to a Mets blog to get in a ghey argument with commenters. It makes you Mets fans looks more sensitive and defensive than we already think you are.
Now just don’t wa-da-tah to the shama cow… ’cause thats a cama cama leepa-chaiii, dig?

Like religious disagrements, I am right.
The Mets suck. God is dead/dad (Hitchensism). The Phillies are cool, Mother Teresa was a con artist.
Simple.

It all makes a lot more sense now. No wonder I saw the Whaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance leaving Shea Wednesday night.
It was taking this moron announcer out of the stadium.
And how about that gutless Tom McCarthy. Think he ever gave a snide “Whatever that’s all about” comment about Reyes during his Met announcing days? Nope. Didn’t think so.
July 25th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
That one he’s holding up with his hand, to tell the announcer whose asking, is for 1st. Which is where the Metropolitans are and the phillies arent as much due to that HR as anything.
Oh and it’s also 1 more championship than philly has in almost 3 decades in any sport.

Hey, how are those Mets doing in 2008? I’m just saying…..handshakes, no handshakes, class or no class…Phillies ARE the 2007/08 NL East Champs.
