Carlos Ruiz Mans The Hot Corner
Posted by meech.one at 11:43 am ET 9 Comments

And no, this wasn’t during warm-ups. After our eventual hero, Chris Coste, came into the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning for Greg Dobbs (and proceeded to go 4-for-4 including the GW single), the Phillies were temporarily left third baseman-less. So the genius baseball mind inside Charlie Manuel’s skull informed ex-infielder Carlos Ruiz to go out and play the position:

And just like everything Charlie does, it wound up being the correct move. No balls were hit to Ruiz that inning (Beltran grounded out to Rollins followed by Delgado & Tatis K’s) so Eric Bruntlett was available to pinch-hit for Brad Lidge in the bottom half and stay in the game at 3rd. Eric B. (for President) then thwacked a double to right-center, allowing Jayson Werth to score from first and tie the game up at 7.

Once again, Charlie Manuel > Jerry Manuel.

Carlos at hot corner > Hot Carl

    Carlos Ruiz is two things.

  3. Joe B Says:

Carlos Ruiz > David Bell + Wes Helms

  4. ill Says:

Ruiz is actually playing some good ball post-allstar break. Hitting .283 with a .364 OBP. Everyone has been bashing him lately, but he has actually been pretty good. I don’t think he has even GIDP’d in the second half.

  5. meech.one Says:

ill – Carlos Ruiz has turned into a semi-punchline lately, but I totally agree. I can’t remember who said it, I think it was Cholly, but he said if everybody else was hitting like they were supposed to nobody would be talking about Carlos Ruiz. I sorta like the guy.

And not for nothing, but the biggest “bashing” of Carlos Ruiz actually came out of J-Roll’s mouth on that dumb sports show (period).

  6. How do you spell retard? Says:

Wouldn’t it have made more sense to keep Carlos(the world’s greatest defensive catcher) behind the plate and put Coste at third? He couldn’t possibly have more range than Costey, and isn’t Coste renowned for his utiliability?

  7. meech.one Says:

I hope you didn’t just question the decision making of Charlie Manuel. You didn’t, right?

  8. zack Says:

Did anyone notice when they were showing the closeup of Ruiz fielding ground balls before the inning bobble the one ball that came to him

    Bump.
