Carlos Ruiz Isn’t Just A Catcher, He’s Also A Pitchman
Posted by meech.one at 10:40 pm ET 14 Comments

Phillies backstop Carlos Ruiz isn’t exactly what you would call “popular” or “marketable,” but that didn’t stop the fine folks at Lincoln to seek him out for voice-over work on their local radio spots. Every couple innings during the Phils broadcast on 1210 WPHT am, a fluent, personable Ruiz pops in and tries to persuade you to drive the car he drives — the 2008 Lincoln MKS MKX . Listen to the embedded audio below the pic.

Not pictured: The actual car he is pitching, the 2008 Lincoln MKX.

  1. ha-mace Says:

Who does he call a bitch at the end of the spot?

  2. How do you spell retard? Says:

I was waiting for this spot to be recognized. ‘Cuuuhhrball’ ranks up there with Scott Graham reading Graham Slam fan mail.

  3. Mark Says:

Theres another one where he is putting down signals and he puts down a 2 and goes “I’m ordering 2 hot dogs” I love that one.

  4. Gaze Says:

He’s BARELY serviceable as a catcher… maybe becoming pitchman would be a better career move.

  5. Chamomiles Davis Says:

Who does he call a bitch at the end of the spot?

All of us, ha-mace. We’re all his bitches.

  6. meech.one Says:

Amazing that guy would leave the blueberry harvest to record that spot.

  7. Paul Richards Says:

Just for the sake of accuracy, it’s not the MKS he’s pitching, it’s the MKX. First of all, there is no 2008 MKS. It’ll be coming out later this month as a 2009. Secondly, the MKS is not a crossover as stated in the ad, it’s a sedan.

Thanks. I made an addendum noting the slip-up and have fired my second editor in as many days. But hey, at least I know what position Carlos Ruiz plays!

We all make mistakes, Paul, but at The Fightins’ dot com – those mistakes cost you your job.

  9. Jeffrey Says:

I miss those Graham Slam commercials. I don’t really miss Scott Graham, though.

  10. PhiPhan5648 Says:

Mmmm… Graham Slam. Love that stuff.

Oh, and yeah… it’s hilarious to listen to Ruiz in that commerical.

As far as what GAZE said about him being “barely serviceable.”

Carlos might not be the consistant hitter that Chris Coste is, but he is a damned good defensive catcher. He’s got an arm like a cannon that throws out runners stealing on a decent enough basis, and he’s also shown great ability to block the plate from runners coming home to score.

  11. Gaze Says:

All good qualities to have… but there are approximately 10,000,000 catchers just like him sitting in the minors and independant leagues that can’t hit the ball very well either.
Carlos Ruiz = Jason Jaramillo = Lou Marson = just about anyone else you want to throw back there.

Granted, if my biggest gripe is have a below average catcher then I guess you can say things are going pretty well, but how many more double plays is the guy going to ground into before the breaking point?

  12. PhiPhan5648 Says:

How many more double plays is Number 6 going to ground into for that matter?

But I see your point… definitely a valid one. I just hope Ruiz can find his Batt again, the one we were hoping he’d have kept since last season, when he was fairly decent at the plate.

  13. Tug Haines Says:

    bump.

  14. brian Carroll Says:

ok, so how many peope want to make that point about Carlos Ruiz again, highly under-rated, as most of you were saying right?!?! exactly, why don’t you get to know the guy before you start talking trash on him…. and yea, i’m family so don’t be surprised how upset i am with this!!!!
