During these busiest days the Phillies have had since inking Doc, they’ve found their answer to the missing foreign mid-to-late innings reliever problem incurred after losing Chan Ho Park. First reported by ESPNDeportes stud Enrique Rojas (and first translated by Beerleaguer), the Phillies have signed 38 year old SP/RP Jose Contreras to a 1-year deal, terms unknown.
Most seem to believe he will end up being a direct replacement for current free agent Chan Ho Park. He had pretty horrible numbers starting for the ChiSox last year (5-14, 114.2 IP, 5.42 ERA), but after being traded to the Rockies he pitched 17 pretty good innings (17 innings, 1.59 ERA, 17 Ks) and threw in the high 90’s.
Oh yeah, that’s right, he also gave up an RBI single to today’s birthday boy, CHOOOOOOCH, in Game 3 of this past NLCS against the Rockies. Think that’s fucking weird? Check out the Fightins’ latest addition:

And for any of you that are reading this in the next couple minutes, CLIFF LEE SEATTLE PRESSER AT 6 PM ET. Check it out here.

NLDS, actually. Anyway, this is a pretty good deal assuming it’s not too much money and they don’t let him start at all.
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:19 pm
meh
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:21 pm
so the Phils now have 3 “flamethrowers”. Madson, Jose and hopefully fucking Lidge will pitch “better”
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:26 pm
the Phillies will then trade him to the Mets for Johan Santana
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:09 pm
i’m concerned about chooch.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Contrares sucks. Let’s hope Dubee can fix him into a quality reliever.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:15 pm
by 38 you mean 50

i’m watching presser…cliff’s not doing that good a job of pretending to want to be there.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:20 pm
And don’t let those 17 K’s in 17 innings fool you. He gave up 20 hits and 8 walks as well. Sure, he only surrendered 3 runs, but extrapolate his WHIP with the Rockies over a full season, and I guarantee his 1.59 ERA would be tripled.

+1 Stunkbug. I watched all of 15 seconds before I realized he wasn’t being signed. He said something like, “We have a great defense, therefore we won’t be giving up many runs”. Stuttering the entire time.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:28 pm
i like how he said seattle had nice weather. cool summer days. wtf? that’s was the strangest thing i’ve seen in a while.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:36 pm
I missed the Cliff Lee press conference
Anyway, not a fan of this Jose Contreras signing at all…
Hopefully he isn’t who Amaro had in mind when he said he was looking for “another starter”
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:39 pm
I fucking feel so bad for Cliff….I loved that guy. I love Halladay too but, I know we could have signed both. I don’t care. Ruben is an a-hole sometimes.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Ruben is an A-Hole because he HAS to be, and it’s not easy at all to be a GM. You can’t always do your job without hurting some feelings, or letting go of some fan favorites.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:56 pm
WE GET THIS GUY! WHY?!? BRING BACK CLIFF LEE!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Yeah, I agree with I Hate Jose, bring back Lee!!!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:58 pm
I’m so pissed still — why did we trade Lee?!? Please help me understand this!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:18 pm
MM … the Phils traded Cliff Lee because their farm system cupboard was bare after signing Roy Halladay.
They would have traded Blanton instead had they been able to recoup any prospects for Blanton, but they could not.
Say we’d kept both Lee and Halladay, and then one of our key starters was injured in June (heaven forbid). Amaro would have had no trading chips at all.
The Phillies needed to replace some prospects. It was a very sound baseball move.

Shane Victorino at the Sixers game. And gasp! He signed an autograph. Although that could because there was a fat camera in his face.
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:49 pm
HARUMPH! HARUMPH! HARUMPH!
I didn’t get a harumph outta that guy!
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:13 pm
I think you boys have had about enough beans.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Ill repost what I wrote over at the level on how I feel on this signing.
His splits from last season were great for the most part as a reliever in Colorado, but in only 5 appearances. Looking further he was most effective overall in pitches 1-15 with opposing avg. at .247, and in pitches 1-45 opponents hit .260. Past pitch 45 they hit over .300. But the versatility is nice if some starters get hurt (knock on wood). Im also excited to add another Cuban player to the roster along with Baez. Ive always liked him from when he helped the ChiSox end their drought before the Cubs
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:34 pm
LMAO How many former White Sox players are we going to sign??? Is Thome still available? Get to it Ruben!
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:53 pm
I have to say for about half a second there I was really pumped about Chan Ho
January 22nd, 2010 at 10:21 pm
I hope the people that are super pissed about this weren’t the same ones defending the fucking Baez signing. As long as it’s not for more than $2 mil it’s a fine deal.

PHYLAN IS ANGRY ABOUT SOMETHING
January 22nd, 2010 at 10:33 pm
WHY CAN’T YOU ALL BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS MIDDLING LOW-MONEY RELIEVER SIGNING GRAAAR *punches wall*
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:19 pm
It’s not that I support or oppose these type of moves – they just exist. Some work, some don’t. I worry about more important things .. like what the fuck I’m gonna make for dinner tomorrow.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:27 pm
I just like it when my favorite team spends their money as efficiently as possible is all. Believe it or not minor signings don’t dominate my day.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Ehh, as long as Contreras is used as only a reliever…I think he could potentially be an okay addition to the bullpen. At any rate, the signing should at least be pretty cheap…and they could still possibly have enough money to bring back a guy like Pedro for the 5th rotation spot.

Every time I see Jose Contreas I think to myself, “…..When they fuck did Shawn Kemp become a pitcher?”
January 23rd, 2010 at 8:57 am
Phylan – didn’t say they did, sport. In fact, the post had nothing to do with you, but I shall respond anyway! You seem to scrutinize every single move in Phylan fashion – with stats and be wilderness. I think you need to just relax until things get going. The Ibanez move last Summer caused all sorts of panic amongst these (fine?) fans. Also, who would have predicted that Chan Ho would fail as a starter only to be our best relief pitcher? I just prefer to take the high road on moves as irrelevant as this. The money isn’t yours!
January 23rd, 2010 at 11:02 am
Well maybe clifton Phifer should have agreed to the 60 million we offered him.
Quit yah bitchin! HE’S NOT ON THE TEAM ANYMORE. GET OVER IT!
January 23rd, 2010 at 11:07 am
+1.57 Eric.
January 23rd, 2010 at 11:37 am
Ruben’s relationship on Cubans is far out amazing.
January 23rd, 2010 at 11:48 am
Using major league top talent to replace minor league players while the team is still a top competitor is not “A sound baseball move.” It’s completely unprecedented.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:58 pm
chooch signed
January 23rd, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Gaze – my good man. Do you know what else is unprecedented? Trading for an ace, and then having the ace you originally wanted be traded to the same team the next off season. THIS WHOLE THING IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. WHY DONT YOU UNDERSTAND THAT? Jesus Christ. In theory, yes, we could have made both trades over the summer, but that was never, ever.. NEVER.. never.. never.. the intention. When you take 3 seconds to think about it, it makes a whole lot of sense. When has a team in the history of anything traded all of its top prospects in one week for 2 good players? Stop trying to compare this situation to anything else, it’s futile. Seriously, please go start rooting for the Yankees, you’re a fucking terrible fan.

-22 Million Victorino Bucks from Eric.

So that leave me with a net of -21,999,999.43? Or is it -20,430,000? I’m so confused.

You don’t know the love me and Cliff had! It will never be the same.
