Do you guys think Jeff Garcia can play first base?

71 Responses to “Uh-oh.”

  1. Jeff Garcia seems like more of a catcher to me.

  2. Dubee Dubee Du says:

Don’t tell me. He fell in the shower, right?

    The Fightins’ Karma strikes again.

  3. Mike P says:

    Everybody’s hurt! Woohooo!

I’m trying to stay upbeat about the Howard injury. I’m not going to assume the worst until we get definitive news.

  4. Eric says:

It’s ok, Howard is over-paid anyway. We will just slot somebody in with a similar TGORP and nothing will change.

  5. Mark says:

Most durable Phillies non-pitcher: Jayson Werth.

Good thing we didn’t ship him out yet.

  6. Eric says:

Mark – don’t forget Dobbs, that dude is a warrior. If he gets hurt his career is literally over. He’d be patrolling third base right now with Howard’s injury.

  7. Sophie says:

Can anyone tell me how Ryan got hurt? I didn’t get to see the beginning of the game.

  8. W.B. Mason says:

    I want me, too.

  9. Mike P says:

    @ Sophie

He ran past 2nd base on a ball in play, thought twice about it, and tried lunging back to 2nd as the throw came in. His leg hit the bag in an odd way, and his ankle bucked under the pressure. The knee also looked like it buckled a bit. He had trouble getting up for a while, looking as if he was in a tremendous amount of pain, and eventually walked off the field with a person on each side (including Cholly on his right) helping to support him. It’s being reported as a left ankle sprain, and they’re taking x-rays.

  10. Phylan says:

He was sliding back into second, his foot planted but the rest of his leg kept going. It looked really really bad, and my instinct is to say that he’s headed to the DL and the Phillies are fucked proper

  11. Dubee Dubee Du says:

Sophie he was on first and took off on a base hit to right, as he rounded second he saw Pelozzo give him the stop sign. He turned, going back to the bag feet first jamming his ankle.

  12. Phils Phan says:

The inconsistency of this season (bearing in mind injuries) is maddening. Rip off 8 in a row, then go into a city whose team deserves to be in AA ball and look foolish.

  13. Dubee Dubee Du says:

I have no doubt he’s going to be placed on the DL. The fucked part I’ll hold judgement on.

  14. Eric says:

Phylan – I thought it looked bad too because it looked like he shattered something around his ankle, or at least that’s what the cameras indicated. However, if it was that bad I’m not sure he’s getting ANY weight on it. Since it looked awful and he made some minor progress, I am able to at least hold out hope that it’s a sprain and Howard’s pants deceived us?

  15. Sophie says:

Thanks for the explanations, just saw it on tv too. I’d like to be optimistic about this, but this was an injury that led to the beginning of the end of my gymnastics “career”. Granted, the two are completely different, so hopefully it isn’t that bad for Ryan.

  16. Phylan says:

The xrays were negative. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t miss significant time though. But there’s no fracture.

  17. Eric says:

    Sophie, great analogy.

  18. Mike P says:

    X-Rays came back negative. *whew!*

  19. Greenman! says:

X-rays are negative just like Eric is about Howard :P

  20. doogie says:

Why doesn’t Eric just go fuck off? Eric, why don’t you just go fuck off?

  21. pat says:

    matt rizotti?

  22. Jupiter's Rings says:

looks like howard’s going to the DL for our sins.

  23. Watrick says:

    Superman died for you sins.

  24. Redneck Father says:

    Adam Dunn Goof’d!

  25. Mike P says:

Dammit. Hamels had been pitching pretty well, too.

  26. Greenman! says:

in other news LARRRRRY just had a clutch pop up

  27. blackinmind says:

johnny if you reading this, you stink.

  28. blackinmind says:

    ben francisco like johnny says.

  29. Eric says:

Milt Thompson thinks the trainer deserves to be fired.

  30. ZWR says:

I like it when Rob Dibble brags about how the Nats have drawn more than 100,000 fans this weekend.

  31. Greenman! says:

Rob Dibble is clearly a fake name

  32. Rob Dibble says:

I also find it highly impressive how our own fans are warming enough to cheer for the Phillies. That, my friends, is sportsmanship.

/goes back to eating pieces of the pressed wood table in the broadcast booth

  33. Del says:

Knowing RAJ, he will try to get another SP since SP is the problem ya know

  34. Greenman! says:

I can’t take these late inning hijinks from the Phillies anymore

  35. Jupiter's Rings says:

looks like nyjer morgan is playing dress-up today.

  36. Jupiter's Rings says:

also, i hate cb buckner. a whole lot.

  37. Ho\ says:

    don’t be

  38. Greenman! says:

Well I screwed that up, lets try this again. It always looks like he’s wearing a robe, that Jersey is like 10 times too big for him

  39. Nick says:

Props to Tommy on the “OH ITS A HAND RACE”

  40. ZWR says:

    that’s why we got oswalt!

  41. :/ says:

    I’m sorry, but when I see #44 I still miss Nelson a little…

  42. The Dude says:

Is it just me, or if you saw Colin Balester at a park and he offered you a sucker, you’d probably end up ass raped, wrapped in a blanket and thrown into the woods? Just sayin’.

  43. The Dude says:

    Poly, you’re the man!

  44. Greenman! says:

    Werzt <3

  45. The Dude says:

Time for Lidge to warm up so he can give up another walk-off dinger. Oh wait…today he’ll actually look like an all-star. I forget it’s Jeckyl day, not Hyde.

  46. Nick says:

  47. ZWR says:

“but guys… i wear number 99 and have a mustache! CRAZY!!!”

  48. Greenman! says:

lol ZWR you need to post in the comments here more often, love it

  49. Mike P says:

A three-out save for Brad Lidge? Just goes to show that right when you think you understand everything about a baseball player, something completely incomprehensible can happen.

  50. Jupiter's Rings says:

BAlester? MOlester? he was born with that ‘stache.

  51. Morandini's Triple Play says:

Nice win, guys. I think my fave part was the Oswalt sacrifice bunt. I’ll never understand why they don’t use pitchers for PH bunts more often.

  52. Tyson says:

Great win… let’s hope RyHo is OK. The bench has been stepping up lately and contributing, so as long as that continues with the strong starting pitching we’ve been getting, we shouldn’t have any problems until players like Utley, Vic and Howard start coming back.

  53. will.H says:

rollins, victorino, polanco, utley, howard, ruiz, etc. Fuck off 2009 Mets, real ball players don’t quit.

  54. Ryan Howard's Left Ankle says:

  55. James Anthony Happ says:

  56. D. Whitmore says:

besides looking like a moron, balester was a competitive surfer growing up.

    /not joking.

  57. Greenman! says:

    JA can’t bunt like Oswalt

  58. ArkansasFred says:

Maybe he just didn’t want to miss Shark Week,

  59. Just.Absent. Happ says:

    Best post

  60. John Matrix says:

anyone watching this good old boy crying on cops?

  61. Bozo says:

Was originally linked in a comment on TheGoodPhight so I hope Ryan doesn’t need to go on the DL.

  62. MoyerIsMyHero says:

I was a little disappoined at the lack of Fightins/Birdland shirts ath Sat & Sun’s games. I saw an ‘Uts’ and a ‘Panamania’ Saturday and a ‘Wake Up the Bats’ today. But I was hoping to see more.

Hearing rumors Howard is hurt (fractured foot). He’s definitely not in the line-up. Anyone have more info?

    @Tug Haines says:
    July 31, 2010 at 3:36 pm
No, it’s 100% true. Zolecki reported it.

YOU KNUCKLEHEADS. Braves and Yankees only as the subject of such tomfoolery in the future, please. OK? Got It?

I killed an greatuncle that way a few years ago saying he had a heart attack in order to get out of some office retreat thing. He keeled over for real two weeks later.

I also sprained my ankle once about as bad as it looks Howard did (pretty fn bad). I wouldn’t expect him to really be able to plant off it in the batters box for at least two weeks. Hey, maybe Cholly can rehire Milt to be Howard’s bandage boy. Actually this could be a blessing in disguise if it helps Howard fight pulling the ball, or, then again, it could screw up his hitting stance completely for the rest of the season.

  64. John Matrix says:

Howard needs to toughen up! hasnt he ever heard of wally pipp?

  65. MoyerIsMyHero says:

To be fair, Kruk, I wasn’t in on the tomfoolery. I would never joke about that sort of thing, for that exact reason.

  66. Linds says:

Since when did giving a guy a wedgie become normal helping him off the field? I bet Amandah wished she was the crotch seam.

  67. Lynniemac says:

As upsetting as it was to watch Howard get hurt, I’ve gotta say seeing Mark Anderson hold him up by his belt was surprisingly hilarious.

  68. Dubee Dubee Du says:

T-Mac’s comment as Ryan gets helped off the field via the wedgie…”There’s a sight nobody wants to see.”

  69. Chutley's Impressed by Mac's Speed says:

Howard will be fine. Turned ankles can be right as rain in a couple days. As for Lidge… it’s day to day.

I knew we were winning, however, the moment Balester the Molester came into the game. My buddies and I call him Balestar Craptastica & despite his wickedly AWESOME Porn-Stache, the dude is a guaranteed run.

  70. Eisenreich's nose says:

One thing no one has mentioned regarding this injury, if indeed Howard returns in a few days, is the significance of all that weight he’s lost over the last two years, not only in terms of his overall body strength, health, and resilience, but also in less weight that ankle is absorbing as it catches the base. Truth be told, there are more benefits to Howard’s fitness than just his mobility, increased speed, etc.

  71. JB says:

No post about the Lidge meltdown that plenty of us were able to see in person on Saturday? That shit was ridiculous. There were probably about a hundred National fans there and the loudest dozen of them were next to me in section 202. That was fun. Nothing like having fans from a last place team talking shit to you as they win their second in a row against you, by walkoff no less.
