PITCHING MATCHUP:
Kyle Kendrick (0-1) 7.61 ERA
PHILLIES: Many Phillies fans wondered if Kendrick would get another chance to start, carrying a 7.61 ERA after five starts. But the Phillies have little choice but to stick with him with left-hander J.A. Happ still on the disabled list. “We need Kyle to step up,” pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “We need him to be more efficient. We need him to pitch down in the strike zone. We need his temp to pick up so we have energy playing behind him. And he’s aware of those things. Now he has to put them in play.”
Brad Penny (3-1) 1.56 ERA
CARDINALS: Penny looked a bit shaky for the first time as a Cardinal his last time out, and he still turned in an effective outing. He wasn’t helped by brutal weather conditions, and he came out of the game with a quality start, but he walked five in six innings. He’s one of a pretty short list of pitchers with a history of success at Philadelphia’s tough Citizens Bank Park. Penny is 2-0 in three starts at the Phillies’ home stadium, with a 1.71 ERA and one homer allowed in 21 innings.
