NLDS Roster Has Been Set.
Posted by Chris at 4:22 pm ET 103 Comments

Charlie has set the Phillies NLDS roster. There are definitely a couple surprises and snubs in the roster. Here is the list as provided by Scott Lauber:

Pitchers (12): LH Cliff Lee (Game 1 starter), LH Cole Hamels (Game 2 starter), RH Joe Blanton, LH J.A. Happ, RH Pedro Martinez, RH Ryan Madson, RH Brad Lidge, LH Scott Eyre, RH Chad Durbin, RH Brett Myers, RH Kyle Kendrick, LH Antonio Bastardo.
Catchers (2)Carlos RuizPaul Bako.
Infielders (6)Ryan HowardChase UtleyJimmy RollinsPedro Feliz,Miguel CairoGreg Dobbs.
Outfielders (5)Raul IbanezShane VictorinoJayson WerthBen Francisco, Matt Stairs.

Yes you read correctly. No Eric Bruntlett (Thanks Phylan) and no Clay Condrey. That means Cairo takes Beardo’s place and Kyle Kendrick and Antonio Bastardo are in. The surprises are no Bruntlett, even though we were all crying for it, and Kyle Kendrick being in and the snub would have to go to Condrey. Yes Condrey was injured most of the second half but he has pitched decent after coming back. Tyler Walker could be considered a snub but personally I wouldn’t want him on my post season roster. Everyone else on the roster could pretty easily be labeled as no-brainers.

Anything you would have done different, or was Charlie dead on?

  1. Sean Says:

Personally, I would’ve gone with Condrey over Bastardo or maybe even Kendrick

  2. MP Says:

So, so glad Bruntlett is gone. Cairo def made a great case for himself. I am really surprised Condrey didn’t make it. I get why he went with Bastardo because of the lefty situation, but hands down I trust Condrey way more than Kendrick.

  3. ericvsthem Says:

I feel sorry for Condrey. Definitely think he deserves to be on the roster instead of Bastardo, regardless of the lack of lefties in the pen. But… it’s just the NLDS roster, and it could change for the NLCS or WS, depending on how people perform.

  4. CarlosBeltransexual Says:

I’d much rather have Condrey than Kendrick.

  5. sportfella Says:

It looks to me like a “what have you done for me lately” roster. And that’s fine. Bruntlett couldn’t hit if the ball was on a tee, and Condrey has been on-again-off-again throughout the year. I like the roster, but don’t love it. Just because of the bullpen.

  6. Jdashdog Says:

Cairo definitely deserves to be there over Bruntlett. If it weren’t for “The Triple Play” Beardo’s season would’ve been completely unremarkable in addition to being otherwise horrible. Kendrick has pitched pretty well as a long man and a mop up guy and I’m comfortable with him eating an inning if we have a decent lead or to save other bullpen arms if the game is out of hand. If you look at Tyler Walker over the course of the season maybe he deserves to make it, but if you know who Tyler Walker is you’re probably not comfortable with him pitching late in a close playoff game.

  7. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

I’d stick with Condrey over Kendrick. Bastardo I get, but to me that is even a stretch. The upside of Bastardo is that he can at least gas it up when needed in the right situation against the right hitter. But the Phils could be asking a lot from two guys who have no experience in the post-season. Someone out there can correct me if I’m wrong because most of the time I go strictly off memory, but I think Condrey had dominant (or close to it) numbers against the Rockies hitters.

  8. Chris Says:

“If you look at Tyler Walker over the course of the season maybe he deserves to make it, but if you know who Tyler Walker is you’re probably not comfortable with him pitching late in a close playoff game.”

    My exact same sentiment.

  9. maria Says:

I wish Condrey had made it but I guess I understand. There isn’t room for everybody, but I do think they got it right.

  10. meech.one Says:

    Where’s Paul Hoover!? I’m OUTRAGED.

  11. Lynniemac Says:

I am despondent over the lack of Andy Tracy.

  12. Chris Says:

He was batting .433 for christ’s sake!

  13. Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-dro's soul glo says screw em motha fuckas who pitches in the 9th. Says:

i’m surprise the Hoover damn didn’t make it. and at least it’s cold in october for walker to not sweat, i’ll miss him.

  14. Gaze Says:

Matt Stairs makes the cut despite being absolutely worthless this season.

  15. Jdashdog Says:

I think if Andy Tracy could play outfield he makes it over Stairs.

  16. maria Says:

There’s always that chance he’ll get that big hit. I think it’s worth the gamble.

  17. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

I would have Matt Stairs on my playoff roster every damn year if only for the potential of what he can do at the plate (i.e. Game 4 of the 2008 NLCS). Keep in mind he had a game winning pinch hit bomb against the Rockies early in the season. He hit a home run to start the 5 run 9th inning against the Pirates at home. He had the grand slam against the Nats in which the Phils fell short.

I’ll put him on my post-season roster any damn day Gaze.

  18. Lynniemac Says:

I would be equally despondent if Matt Stairs were left off the roster. If only for the potential of him saying something awesome about getting his ass hammered.

  19. will.H Says:

i like bruntlett. hit a dinger in the WS along with two winning runs. he didnt have a very good season, i just have a soft spot for him in my WFC memories.

  20. Tug Haines Says:

Am I missing something or has Durbin been not very good this year?

  21. jessem Says:

I think Kendrick is in the lineup for long relief, which I feel he is better suited for than clay and bastardo obviously for being left-handed. Two things that Moyer handled pretty well, ugh.

  22. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

@Tug: No you’re right. But as of late he’s been quite good. Gave up 3 ER on 9H through September and October in 15.2 IP.

  23. Lynniemac Says:

I HAVE TICKETS TO TOMORROW’S GAME! WHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Gonzo Says:

    Way to go LynnieMac!!!

  25. Gonzo Says:

De La Rosa is off the playoff roster with a groin.

  26. Lynniemac Says:

Okay, I am way too excited about this. I’m talking 6 year old on Christmas morning excited.

  27. Chris Says:

@Lynnie How could you not be?!

  28. MaxL Says:

Last time I checked gonz, they ALL have groins.

  29. Lynniemac Says:

MaxL, when was the last time you checked the Rockies’ groins? And why?

  30. jupiter's rings Says:

i still like JCRomero. i don’t care if his season was a week long. he brings fire from the pen.

  31. Gonzo Says:

Bob Costas was the first to implement the phrase, “He’s out with a groin”. And not including the word ‘injury’.

Jupiter, I wish JC was there as well, but he’s injured.

  32. will.H Says:

looking more and more like scott eyre will see some playoff action in his final season before he retires

  33. Lynniemac Says:

Everytime someone is out with a groin injury, this goes through my head:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui0NXtdFN_I

  34. Heese Says:

Bastardo is such a reach, I know the Rockies are not good against LHP, but dude has thrown 1 inning since June.

I’ll be there tomorrow and Thursday, hopefully Cliff and Cole can start the postseason off strong.

  35. Gonzo Says:

Heese, you are a wise one. I am also not a fan of Bastardo. Of course, he is the 3rd lefty in the pen. And likely to only face a maximum of 1 batter per game.

  36. caitlin Says:

bastardo?? kendrick?? lets hope we don’t have to go to the pen

  37. Gonzo Says:

    +11 to LynnieMac.

I immediately thought of this (Go to the 1:50 mark)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxaQ9cKYQXo

  38. Gonzo Says:

It’s amazing that Hugh Douglas is on FOX right now talking baseball with John Bolaris. Yet on WIP, he admits he knows nothing about baseball.

And the bar interrupts the conversation by singing high hopes. Man that was awesome.

  39. Lynniemac Says:

Hugh Douglas took BP with the Phillies a couple of years ago, and in the interview with him that followed it, he expressed complete disbelief that “they play baseball EVERY DAY?!?! EVERY day? Seriously, every day.”

I had forgotten about Sam Malone’s groin rap. Thanks, Gonzo.

  40. Tug Haines Says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ3k6FnrCN8

  41. maria Says:

I was in my statistics class today and this girl was saying she wanted to go to a playoff game just so she can she was there. She didn’t even mind sitting behind the foul pole. What’s the point? I really hate that You go to a game to watch it; not to be cool and say you were there.

  42. Gonzo Says:

The odds that Maria’s classmate is a blonde: 1/5
The odds that Maria’s classmate is a hussy : 5/2

  43. maria Says:

Dark blonde hair but more importantly has that talks like a baby/California voice.

  44. Tug Haines Says:

Odds that she buys a pink hat when she gets there?

  45. will.H Says:

odds on her wangbag boyfriend wearing a tilted hurly cap.

shes probably the same girl that sat behind me at game 2 nlds last season. “wait, whats a walk?”

  46. Gonzo Says:

What is a fly without wings?

  47. Phylan Says:

Walker’s ERA is thanks to the retardedly high percentage of inherited runners he allows to score not counting towards it. He’s a pick up off the Giants’ trash heap and doesn’t belong on the playoff roster.

  48. sescott51 Says:

chad durbin is not good at baseball.

    i want andy tracy.

  49. will.H Says:

    any news on chan ho

  50. BigMiles Says:

Just scored tickets to the game tomorrow…I’ll be the drunk guy who runs onto the field naked if we are getting killed in the middle innings, just to make it interesting for everyone. Hell, I might even do it in celebration if we are up big.

  51. maria Says:

This Twins-Tigers game is pretty exciting. Seriously, I cannot wait until tomorrow.

  52. John Says:

this AL Central tiebreaker game is really good, i dont like either team, but i love baseball

and i know whoever wins is gonna just lose to the “Almighty” yankees, but whateves

  53. John Says:

thats a sarcastic “Almighty” btw, im an avid obsessed phillies fan

  54. John Says:

lol that was oddly coincedental maria, we posted the same thing at the same time

    weird 0_o

  55. maria Says:

I would love nothing more than to see the Yankees lose in the first round.

  56. maria Says:

    You’re my echo.

And I agree, I just love baseball and this game is just fun to watch.

  57. John Says:

    watch…watch………watch…….

    lol

  58. Brandon Says:

I would’ve liked to see tracy but thats no big deal. And I like the pitching he picked.

Now they just gotta go to the mountain.

  59. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

This game is unreal. Some really stupid plays by both the Tigers and Twins, but it’s made for a compelling game. Ron Darling and Chip Caray may be the two worst commentators ever. And Craig Sager in his hideous purple suit is a horse’s ass. No doubt these three rubes will drool all over the Yankees tomorrow night.

Meanwhile the Phils/Rockies get Brian Anderson, Joe Simpson, and David Aldridge. Thank God I’ll be at the game instead of listening to these assholes.

  60. maria Says:

Someone please tell me that at no time whatsoever during the playoffs will Tom McCarthy or Chris Wheeler be on the radio.

  61. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

Hate to break the news to you Maria.

    http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20091006&content_id=7367160&vkey=pr_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi

Wheels will be on the radio……

  62. John Says:

no they wont maria, cuz they work for csn and wphl, neither of which have the right to broadcast mlb games

so yeah, u wont see those jokers

  63. maria Says:

And to these commentators, they are not hankies, they’re rally towels.

  64. John Says:

oh, u asked about radio, maybe i shouldnt read so fast lol

  65. maria Says:

You just broke my heart. I’ll have to listen to the game in silence.

  66. John Says:

good, i wanted the twins to win

  67. Brandon Says:

    That game was unbelievablely great.

  68. maria Says:

The Tigers are now a part of that elusive September collapse club. They join the Mets. I congratulate them.

  69. Phils Phan Says:

    I miss Kirby Puckett.

  70. Gonzo Says:

Awesome game. Congratulations to the Twins. Now go get them Yankees!

  71. Ozzie Virgil's Beard Says:

The only thing that can top this is if someone kicks Craig Sager directly in the gonads for wearing a lavender suit to a baseball game…..

Outside of any Phillies game, that might be the greatest baseball game I’ve ever watched. Unreal.

  72. maria Says:

    0-7 vs the Yankees, yikes.

  73. Gonzo Says:

    My new favorite *Beep*’in commercial.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_Hy02V5zrY&feature=related

  74. RicoBrogna Says:

Shoulda kept stairs off roster and brought mayberry. The bullpen sucks so it doesn’t matter who is in it they just better get people out!

  75. stinkbug Says:

why does wheels get to be on the radio and not sarge? OH MY! that’s not fair.
i kinda wish there was a spot for mayberry on the roster because i feel that he wants it bad. i could be all wrong but there you go.

  76. Gabrielle Says:

@gonzo: super late, but what the hell is wrong with blonde hussies again?

  77. Gonzo Says:

Blonde hussies are the only reason I get out of bed in the morning. Luv’em.

  78. Lynniemac Says:

The Twins/Tigers game was awesome, but I’m only saying that because I don’t care about either team and didn’t have to watch it the way a fan would. And by that I mean, constantly feeling ready to puke. May the Phillies never put me through that.

  79. maria Says:

I don’t think they know any other way.

  80. Gonzo Says:

May the Phillies never put me through that.

Be glad you weren’t born yet to see the 1980 Phils in the NLCS against the Strohs. Some call it the best LCS ever.

/no clue how old you are. although I was 6 and I dont remember. Just the highlights.

  81. PhillyCuban Says:

Awesome games, loved flipping between the Flyers and the Twins

As for the NLDS roster, Im not surprised that Bastardo made it after Escalona blew recently. He should be the 2nd bullpen lefty, with Happ making a start. In the NLCS (knock on wood) we could probably move Happ into the bullpen, start Pedro, and hopefully bump Bastardoo out for Chan Ho.

And Cairo and Kendrick definitely played themselves onto the roster

  82. Phylan Says:

Oh sweet I got some Fightins props, I didn’t even notice that

  83. Chris Says:

@Phylan Yea when you posted that I lol’d

    /thumbs up

  84. GenericFanGroup Says:

People seem to forget the work Kendrick has done recently starting and relieving I really think with the new pitches he has learned that he is on his way back to the rotation and could definitely be the 5 next year.

Bastardo was definitely added to give another left hander in the pen. Now you have Eyre Happ and Bastardo which should be enough to shut them down.

Tomorrow cant get here soon enough.

  85. Lynniemac Says:

@Gonzo: I had been born (and am slightly older than you, apparently), but wasn’t quite old enough to appreciate WHY that LCS was the best ever, and therefore too ignorant to know how sick I should have been feeling.

  86. Gonzo Says:

45 MPH gusts all day tomorrow from left field to right field, according to Hurricane Schwartz.

  87. Gabrielle Says:

ugh i feel sick about tomorrow…i dunno why…crap time, crap weather, and ill be stuck at work on an AWFULLY slowwwwww network for the first half of the game…not how i wanna feel on Day 1 of the playoffs. :(

  88. Lynniemac Says:

I felt that way last year. Didn’t want the playoffs to start, just wanted to bask in winning the division. This year, game 1 can’t come fast enough. Maybe it’s because we won it all last year – not that I don’t want a repeat, I do, but this almost feels more like icing at this point. If they lose tomorrow, I’m sure my opinion will change.

  89. will.H Says:

figures, today was one of the nicest days in the history of pennsylvania

  90. Gonzo Says:

I’ll be live blogging the game tomorrow. Tug is working and cannot work it with me. you can figure out how to get there on your own.

    /trying to be subtle.

  91. Lynniemac Says:

So Cecily Tynan tells me the wind will be blowing out to right. How good is it that De La Rosa is out and Jimenez is in? I just got as close to optimistic as I get.

  92. Gonzo Says:

Jiminez was not affected by this move. It was Jiminez, De La Rosa, Marquis and Cook. Take out Rosa, move the other guys up and put Hammel at the end.

  93. Lynniemac Says:

Hey! What part of “as close to optimistic as I get” did you not understand? Don’t bother me with your details. Would you like to piss in my cornflakes tomorrow morning, too?

/feels like an asshole for not knowing the Rox’ rotation and making dumb statements on the interweb (you know, for the first time ever in her entire life)

  94. Gonzo Says:

/runs away crying – lights self on fire and jumps off the Walt Whitman Bridge into a swarm of sharks.

  95. Lynniemac Says:

There are sharks in the Delaware? Oh, yeah. Riversharks. Duh.

It’s okay, Gonzo, you can come back. I’m not even eating cornflakes in the morning. Since I’ll be going to the game, the baseball gods demand I eat Tastykakes for breakfast, along with making sure my underwear matches my shirt (long story), taking the same route to the ballpark, parking in the same place, going through a right-handed turnstile, and stepping on Scott Rolen’s All-Star brick in Ashburn Alley.

    It’s all good.

  96. Gonzo Says:

All I read was you talking about your underwear.

    /drools

  97. Lynniemac Says:

LOL Then you missed the whole Phillies OCD part. Good.

  98. scrapple joe Says:

    Stairsway to Heaven part 2?

  99. MaxL Says:

    Woo!

  100. Gonzo Says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  101. MaxL Says:

    You’re welcome, gonzo.

  102. Lynniemac Says:

Aw, man! I didn’t even realize 100 was coming up. Shit.

  103. Gonzo Says:

MaxL with a terrific assist. Way to go, bro.
