CITIZENS BANK PARK
Wednesday 10/7 at 2:37PM

Cliff Lee (14-13) 3.22 ERA
PHILLIES: Lee, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in the 12 starts he made after the Phillies acquired him from the Indians on July 29. The 31-year-old southpaw registered nine strikeouts and limited the Rockies to one run over seven innings on Aug. 6.

Ubaldo Jimenez (15-12) 3.47 ERA
ROCKIES: On Friday night, with the Rockies still in position to win the National League West, Jimenez turned in a gem, holding the Dodgers to one run and two hits in six innings of a 4-3 victory. After the All-Star break this season, Jimenez went 9-3 with a 3.08 ERA. He’s capable of going into the 120-pitch range and still being effective. In two career regular-season starts, Jimenez is 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA. But in Game 2 of the 2007 NLDS at Citizen Bank Park, Jimenez shut the Phils down — 6 1/3 innings, one run, three hits. Although he didn’t figure in the decision, the Rockies won.
MY TAKE:
Call me a homer but I have the Phillies winning this series in 4 games. The Rockies have a good offense, some good pitching, and pretty strong bullpen and defense but I just don’t see them being able to beat the Phillies. Our pen is no better, but the Rockies pen has been struggling a little since Houston Street came back from his injury so if we can’t get to their starters maybe we can get to him. It kind of seems like all the NL teams backed into the playoffs, none finishing particularly strong, but I feel like when the stage is set and the Phillies go out there for another round of postseason play they will go out there and get it done. Phillies in 4, discuss bitches.

Ubaldo Jimenez’s arm looks like it’s made from bungee cord.

I know the Phillies’ site has Hamels listed as the Game 1 starter, but nothing is definite yet. Doesn’t really matter, though, who goes Game 1 and who goes Game 2. Both would be available to pitch Game 5.
Anyway, I agree with the Phillies in 4 prediction. I’d start Happ in Game 4 in this series, as the Rockies do poorly against left-handed pitching. They are pretty dominant against righties, which plays right into the Phillies’ hands. If Charlie starts Pedro, who gives up a lot of fly balls, in Coors Field, I would probably not agree with that decision.

I think it’s safe to say that this site has contributed significantly to the time theft epidemic in the Philadelphia area.

Sweep!
October 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Important to win game 1. Jimenez is a stud though, should be tough.
October 5th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Don’t forget one of Happ’s complete game shutouts this year was against the Rockies while they were still on a roll, not during the Clint Hurdle sucking times.

Gotta love a high of 37 and a chance of snow for the game on Saturday!
October 5th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
The Phillies took Cole Hamels off their site as the Game 1 starter and replaced it with TBD. What is Charlie waiting for? The ice to freeze? LET’S PLAY.

As Danny mentions, I don’t think that Hamels being listed as the Game 1 starter necessarily ensures him of that role. I like the scenario of Lee going first, despite not having pitched in the playoffs before. The Phillies crowd is always loud and supportive, but they will be at their absolute best on Wednesday. Lee can feed off of that. Also, you put the team in a position where, should they happen to lose game one, they have the more experienced playoff pitcher in Hamels, who has shown he can handle that pressure. Flip things around and if Hamels were to lose game one, all of that pressure comes down on Lee. As several readers pointed out, if the series comes to a game five, either Lee or Hamels would be available and the Phillies could start whichever starter was most effective. This all becomes moot, though, because I believe the Phillies will win the first two games at home.
Take a look at my blog above as I will be updating more specific statistics for the Phillies playoffs, including the starters, bullpens, and hitters of both the Phillies and their opponents.

+1 to Will Leitch
(By the way, Philadelphia fans don’t receive nearly enough credit for avoiding the Boston plague, immediately turning into our-shit-don’t-stink self-important spoiled brats after winning a long-awaited title. They’re pretty much the same miserable fucks they’ve always been, and you have to salute them for that.)

@Gonzo: How does a boy from Mattoon understand Philly fans better than some Philly fans?
@T-MAC: Excellent catch on Shane’s throw yesterday afternoon.
@Matt: I hate you.

Hey, let’s all give a big thanks to TBS for their Division Series scheduling! I was worried I might have to watch the Defending Champions play in the prime time slot, and who the Hell would want that? – There’s *Yankees* games to watch, for Pete’s sake!
Whores.

I’m contesting the 4 game prediction. It goes 5, but the Fitghtins still pull it off.
Good to see our boys’ll be able to suite up for a game of ice hockey after the game on Saturday. We got’cher Winter Classic right here!
October 5th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
*Fightins, of course.
I dunno who the Fitghtins are, but they ain’t winnin’ shit.

I’m Worried, The Rox have been playing good ball. Their pitching has been very good and the Phils bats have been sub-par. I really hope they can get hot, but for right now I’m worried. And I will be until they prove me wrong (hopefully on Wednesday). I really hope Cole’s hot pitching (one of the only aspects of their game I’ve seen going right for the team the past few weeks) can come through and get a HUGE Game 1 win.
I’m sorry, in advance, for being such a pussy.
Go Phils!!
October 5th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I just secured my Game 1 tickets today. Thank you Tug’s sister Becca!
October 5th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
I like the Phillies but in 5. Honestly I don’t see both Lee and Hamels coming through, since they have both been so spotty lately. Plus if any NL team can be called “hot” right now, it’s the Rocks. I say each team wins one on the road and the Phillies pull it out in the finale.
Alas, I’ve got game two tix but none for game one. I’m kinda hoping Cole goes Wednesday, as due to ill timing I haven’t seen Lee live yet.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Squirrel Jr. – you haven’t missed much. I was at 2 of Lee’s most recent starts and they were both painful.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I think there’s a problem with the picture of the Bank. Namely that it will be daytime when the phils start the NLDS.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
@JFE I chose it because it is right after we won the WS.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I don’t get Bunch’s quote? Is he for or against Fightin’s phans? There’s no one this year that I’ve seen that has the fans support that the Phils have. Some of the crowds at the away games we’ve played you couldn’t get a good checkers game going.
As for starting, I think Hamels, then Lee. Lee needs some pressure on him to perform. When nothing is at stake, his performance is blech!. Once he sees Hamels win one, the pressure will be on him to also win.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Cole is the only pitcher i’m worried about. I hope he can pull out a win
October 5th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Off-topic, but does anyone anything about the mlb.com Gameday Audio? Primary question for me is just who exactly would I be listening to if I subscribed to it.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
You would be able to choose between whatever radio team calls the Rockies games and Franzke/LA
October 5th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Amazingly, I’m actually glad that the Phils have the early game. Due to amazingly bad scheduling, I have classes from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday, but free before that.
October 5th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
max, you’ll likely miss the last 4 innings. id rather miss the first 6. go to class late
October 5th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
We need the sweep to get more rest … but I have to agree i think it will be in 4
October 6th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Serves you right for assuming Hamels was the game 1 starter.
Now this post is completely inaccurate
