Local boy/ ESPN baseball beat reporter Jayson Stark examines the always-mercurial relationship between public perception and certain high-profile baseball managers. Naturally, one of those managers happens to be Charlie Manuel, who since mid-2007 dramatically improved his rating among fans, from “completely shitty” to “not bad.” (Around here that’s as good as it gets.)
Excerpts from Stark’s article:
…In the offseason between the 2006 and 2007 seasons, the people who run the Phillies seriously debated whether to bring their manager back, even after two consecutive seasons in which Manuel’s team stayed in the race into the final weekend…
…You sure don’t hear that old “Charlie from Mayberry” talk about him anymore — not after the Phillies charged back from seven games out with 17 to play last September. And especially not after the events of last Thursday…
…Manuel probably has no idea how much buzz he created inside his own industry with that benching of [Jimmy Rollins]. He should hear the stuff being said about him by people all over the sport. Stuff like: “I’m now a huge Charlie Manuel fan.” And: “Only Charlie could have pulled that off…”
Come on, I’ve always supported Uncle Cholly, haven’t you? Liar.

Not gonna lie… there was a point last year where I was so incredibly furious with Charlie that I would’ve likely killed him if I could. It had to do with an interview he did, in which he stated that he wouldn’t use Brett Meyers as a closer two games in a row. Of course Meyers was damn good as a Closer way back then, and this upset me as he kept sending in good ole “Flash” to close out games that I had attened, and of course, as was the story with the Bullpen last year, lost the game. That combined with the First Place Mets, and Wes Helms was more than enough to overwhelm my usually calm manner.
Granted, “Flash” has been fairly decent this year ((Barring the Walk-off Grand-Slam)), and Charlie has shown more willingness to use our Closer in a more frequent use this year.
So yeah, I’d have to say that my opinion of “Cholly” has improved greatly, and personally, I think he’s the best coach we’ve had since the days of Jim Fregosi.

Chuckles Manuel was in the Klan before September 2007? Sorry for making fun of your Photoshop skills again, Chamomiles.

My “skills” are nothing if not worthy of derision.
